Folio I: plates I to XVIII -- Folio II: plates XIX to XXXVI -- Folio III: plates XXXVII to LIV -- Folio IV: plates LV to LXXII -- Folio V: plates LXXIII to XC. Each folio has a title page and a "Description of Plates". The plates are loosely inserted. Original folios of cloth backed printed paper-covered boards 3 of the five with ties the other two not issued with ties. Condition is good with the usual edge wear associated with loose plates in folios a few short tears creases and dust soiling to edges of plates some "reading wear" Oval stamp of the "The North Devon Athenaeum Barnstaple" to the verso of each plate and title pages. Folios with some general wear and rubbing somewhat marked. A good to very good complete set of this scarce work. Copac list only five libraries with copies. ‎New York: American Bank Note Co 1864. Rare New York and Harlem Rail Road Company stock certificate signed by one of the wealthiest Americans in history Cornelius Vanderbilt. Oblong octavo one page partially printed and accomplished in manuscript the certificate is dated April 12 1864 and grants John M. Dobin 500 shares in the New York and Harlem Railroad Company. Signed by Cornelius Vanderbilt on the verso. In near fine condition. Matted and framed with a portrait of Vanderbilt and an informational placard. The piece measures 17.6 inches by 28 inches. "Contemporaries too often hated or feared Vanderbilt or at least considered him an unmannered brute. While Vanderbilt could be a rascal combative and cunning he was much more a builder than a wrecker . being honorable shrewd and hard-working" H. Roger Grant. From adolescence Cornelius Vanderbilt showed signs of entrepreneurial spirit starting his own ferry service at just 16. In those starting years Vanderbilt's voraciousness earned him the nickname "The Commodore" telegraphing what the future might bring for such an industrious young man. With enough time "The Commodore" succeeded in organizing a steamboat freight empire and began expanding into the railroad industry with his purchase of stock in the New York and Harlem Rail Road Company line one of the first railroads in the United States. His goal was to take the railroad which was generally considered worthless and make it valuable. Five years later after much work he consolidated it with the Hudson River RR to form the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad one of the first giant corporations in United States history. "Vanderbilt vastly improved and expanded the nation's transportation infrastructure contributing to a transformation of the very geography of the United States. He embraced new technologies and new forms of business organization and used them to compete.He helped to create the corporate economy that would define the United States into the 21st century" T. J. David Fanning was one of the most infamous of the Southern Tories raiding Patriots throughout the Carolinas. His guerilla warfare only paused when he was captured but following each of his multiple escapes he would quickly resume his vengeful predation. His narrative was to be the first in a series but the Civil War intervened and only this initial volume was produced. ‎C. 17th Century Manuscript Extract after Edward Johnson on Indigenous Peoples of Early New England Headed 1647‎

‎New England Indigenous Land. Good with no dust jacket. c1600s. Ephemera. On offer is a remarkable early manuscript extract preserving a 17th-century English colonial description of Indigenous peoples in New England. The text closely follows a passage from Edward Johnson’s important Puritan history Wonder-Working Providence of Sions Saviour in New England first printed in London in 1654.Johnson’s work is one of the major early histories of Massachusetts Bay and Puritan New England and this extract preserves his colonial description of Indigenous life hunting fishing labor clothing and religious practice. The passage is devoted almost entirely to English observations of Indigenous peoples in early New England likely in the Massachusetts Bay context. It includes detailed descriptions of bows and arrows fishing trapping hunting deer beaver otter moose birds and fish as well as comments on women’s labor clothing seasonal hardship and domestic life. It also includes a reference to “Powawes ” an early English colonial term used for Indigenous spiritual or healing figures. The manuscript is headed “1647” apparently as a chronological marker for the section being copied rather than as the date the physical manuscript itself was written. The language is strongly shaped by 17th-century Puritan colonial attitudes and includes offensive descriptions of Native peoples. It is best understood today as a colonial-era manuscript transcription preserving English settler perceptions of Indigenous life rather than as a neutral ethnographic account. An excerpt follows: “The Indian People in these parts at the English first coming were very barbarous and uncivilized going for the most part naked although the country be extreme cold in the winter season; They are only clothed with a Deer skin and a little bit of Cloth to cover their privy part. The Women for the most part are very modest although they go as naked as the Men; They are generally very laborious at their planting time and the Men extraordinarily idle making squawes to carry their Children and the luggage beside…”The passage continues with descriptions of hunting fishing trapping bows and arrows and English colonial interpretations of Indigenous religious practice including reference to Indigenous healing charms. HISTORICAL NOTE: Although the manuscript is headed “1647” the heading should not be read as proof that the physical manuscript was written in that year. The text appears to be copied from or closely based upon Edward Johnson’s Wonder-Working Providence which was completed after 1647 and first printed in 1654. The “1647” heading is therefore best understood as a chronological or historical marker within the copied material. A significant manuscript relic preserving early colonial New England commentary on Indigenous peoples Puritan worldview settler observation and the manuscript transmission of early American historical texts. Condition: Mild toning minor spotting smudging and a horizontal fold near the end. The fragment has been backed with a thin supporting layer and mounted to a larger modern support sheet. Ink remains bold dark and legible throughout. Two concertina-bound autograph books. <br> <br>Fan-shaped concertina-bound autograph book 13 x 20cm widest point 30 thick cream leaves with approx 160 manuscript autographs gilt-flecked endpapers gold-patterned brocade cover with a linen label all edges gilt enclosed in a linen fan-shaped sleeve with toggle closures and paper label binder's stamp to the inside cover; the linen worn and faded and the album split at two openings but in very good condition. <br> <br>Small concertina-bound autograph book 12 x 9cm approx 25 thick paper leaves 5 red temple stamps and 4 pencilled autographs sable silk-covered boards chipped paper label in very good condition. Two autograph books dating from 1933-1940 which belonged to the Australian Japan expert author and broadcaster George Caiger 1903-1991. In 1930 after teaching in England and Australia Caiger moved to Japan where he taught English at Musashi Koto Gakko a private school in Tokyo and later also lectured at the Peers' School in Tokyo. Caiger wrote numerous essays and books on Japan and developed friendships with some leading figures in Japanese society and politics. He returned to Australia in 1940 and later became an intelligence officer and translator for the Australian military during World War II before joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. <br> <br>His beautiful fan-shaped Japanese autograph book contains a collection of signatures messages and some ink sketches. The earliest of these date to 1933-1934 and include farewell messages from friends written in May 1934 when Caiger and his wife Margaret returned for a short period to Australia. Others date from 1939-1940 and include farewells from the time when the Caigers left Japan for good in late 1939. An interesting set of signatures on the last page includes the annotation "SS Atuta Maru 00.01am 1st January 1940 Arafura Sea" clearly written as passengers celebrated a rather uncertain New Year on their voyage home from Japan. There are also two charming ink sketches - one of Mt. Fuji - drawn by a friend named Y. Nakatsuka shortly before the Caigers' departure from Japan. Autographs include those of Australian diplomat H. R. Sawbridge and Christian missionary Clarence Gillett who later worked with Japanese internees in the US during WWII. <br> <br>A second smaller concertina-folded autograph book is mostly blank but contains a few pencilled-in names on the first page and some souvenir ink-stamps including one labelled "Daibustu Nara 1.1.33" in the rear. <br> <br>Fascinating autograph realia from the Imperial Japanese period collected by a well-known Australian broadcaster. . hardcover‎

‎1763 Pennsylvania Plantation Rental Agreement Between a Shopkeeper and Millwright Both Enslavers and Land Owners With Significant Primary Source Genealogical Data for 18th-Century Philadelphia and Chester Counties‎

‎<p>On offer is a pre-Revolutionary plantation rental agreement between a Philadelphia shopkeeper and a Springfield millwright featuring notes that connect multiple family and business ties in late 18th-century Philadelphia and Chester counties.</p><p>The rental memorandum is the work of Philadelphia-based lawyer Paul Isaac Voto whose office was located at <em>"the corner of Black Horse Alley in Second Street." </em></p><p>The agreement was drafted between Mr. John Gailbreath often spelled Galbreath or Gilbreath in other historical documentation c. 1717–1766 a shopkeeper whose store was located <em>"in Second Street between Market and Chestnut streets" </em>and the prospective renter millwright Richard Hall of Springfield Chester County. Historical documents show that Hall also owned property in the region.</p><p>Dated May 1763 the rental memorandum indicates that John Gailbreath <em>".letts his house and plantation in Springfield… for one year from the date hereof to… Richard Hall paying the rent of twenty seven pounds…"</em></p><p>The agreement lays out several rules of tenancy including the following examples:</p><ul><li><p><em>"The Tenant is to have Liberty to reap his Corn and Thrash it in the Barn after the time is over leaving the Thaw and Chatt…"</em></p></li><li><p><em>".the Tenant agrees not to take any Hay Straw or Dung off the Premises…"</em></p></li><li><p><em>".the Tenant agrees to… keep the House… and Premises in repair as good as now… shall not keep more fires in the House but only one in the kitchen and one in another room and… not to cut any timber or wood But in the Back Field joining to Crosiers Croziers Plantation…"</em></p></li></ul><p>A caveat on the verso of the lease agreement states that <em>".If John McCoy do not think it proper to rent the place it shall be lett to James Cochran John Cairnes son in law at 26 pounds…" </em>According to historical news documents Galbreath was traveling in 1763 and appears to have entrusted a Chester County contact with the final decision on the rental in his absence.</p><p>The document is signed by Hall but not Galbreath. Its delivery was witnessed by Paul Isaac Voto and Elyha Taylor and the original seal is present.</p><p>This document provides not only insight into property rights legal agreements and plantation rentals in pre-Revolutionary Pennsylvania but it also offers genealogical data to support research on the still-incomplete history of early Pennsylvania families. These include the Cairnes Voto Hall Cochran and Crozier or Crosier families among others.</p><p>While some 18th-century newspaper data exists digitally to assist with ongoing research these being the sources used to find the location of the subjects' businesses this document remains an invaluable primary source for those interested in 18th-century life movement and genealogical links.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Significant age toning folding and micro-tears with significant tearing in one corner. The document is written in ink with a clear legible hand and remains in good condition for its age. Overall: Fair to Good.</p>‎

‎NEW YORK. Fair with no dust jacket. 1796. Non-Book. On offer is a post-revolutionary 1796 operational ledger sheet of the prominent Dutchess County Amenia New York family of Captain Noah Wheeler. The ledger sheet details exactly how a post-Revolutionary farm family managed their wheat their assets debts and the passing of the torch from a veteran father to his adolescent sons. This ledger sheet was kept by Captain Noah Wheeler 1743-1823 and two of his sons. Capt. Wheeler was a descendant of the prominent Wheeler family of New York State. He was a member of the 6th Regiment Charlotte Precinct Dutchess County Militia. Detailed BIO NOTES can be found at the end of this listing. In 1796 Capt. Wheeler then in his early 50s was working in wheat production alongside his 15- and 18-year-old sons Thomas Newcomb 1773-1844 and Anthony 1771-1840. In autumn of that year they were producing wheat and kept this balance sheet to track details of their sowing and production external sales internal consumption financial balances and debts. The sheet also includes details such as who purchased the wheat what is owed to each of the three Wheelers or how much they owed. On the verso is written “Account of Wheat in 1796 of Noah Wheeler Anthony & Thomas N his sons. ” The title is written in the same hand as that of the balance sheet itself. This document provides surprisingly deep insight into the daily lives of the patriarch and young men of a rural pioneering American family and gives a glimpse into the work a father did to prepare his sons to take over the family business as they became men. Condition: Large ledger sheet measuring approximately 13.5”x7.75”. It has been folded and there is age toning some light stains and splitting along fold lines consistent with its age and use. It is entirely legible and written in ink. Overall Fair. BIO NOTES: Noah Wheeler was born in Connecticut to Captain Thomas Wheeler 1715-1754 and Eunice Gates 1718-1787. Thomas Wheeler fought in the French and Indian War and died in Fite Miller tavern on his way home on September 1 1757. Noah Wheeler fought in the Revolutionary War under Colonel David Southerland. He was a member of the 6th Regiment Charlotte Precinct Dutchess County Militia. He was noted as being ranked First Lt. On March 30 1778 and made Captain June 25 1778. Noah Wheeler married Eunice Newcombe 1748-1812 also of Dutchess County. Together they had at least 12 children. His sons including Anthony and Thomas Newcomb were all farmers who built strong estates in New York State. ‎1820 School District Bill for Dutchess County New York Representing a Rare Surviving Look Into the Early Days of Academic Operations under the Common School Law‎

‎AMENIA NEW YORK Dutchess County. Fair with no dust jacket. 1820. Manuscript. On offer is a rare piece of surviving ephemera from the early 19th century school district system of Amenia Dutchess County New York. The document is a school accounting document recording the households in school district No. 19 Amenia the days of school attended cost and payment. It was kept and signed by school instructor John M. Wheeler. The first three households on the record are sons of Revolutionary War Captain Noah Wheeler including Anthony Wheeler 1771-1840 Thomas Newcomb Wheeler 1773-1844 and David Wheeler 1782-1823. These are followed by other Dutchess County Wheelers and neighbouring families such as the Barretts and Colmans. Condition: Measures approximately 7.75 inches x 7.5 inches. It is intact and fully legible save from the number of days attended and amount paid by the Lownberry household which has been carefully cut out. It contains age toning and and fold lines consistent with its age. History of the New York Common School System: New York’s common school system began in earnest with the Common School Act of 1812 which created a statewide framework for publicly supported elementary education. The law established the office of State Superintendent of Common Schools divided towns into school districts and provided state aid that local communities were expected to match. Its goal was to make basic education more regular organized and widely available rather than leaving schooling entirely to private academies churches or scattered local efforts. The system was strengthened by the 1814 law which made the common school fund permanent and helped secure public schooling as a lasting part of New York civic life.
