Published two years after his masterpiece White on White this manifesto composed from his previous theoretical treatise On new systems on Art in 1919 is one of Malevitch's major writings. Written at the height of his artistic research this summary of Malevitch's creative thought lays the theoretical foundations of Suprematism understood not as a break with the past but on the contrary as the result of a history of Art freed from the illusions of the sensitive world. Thus Malevitch establishes an intellectual genealogy taking its roots in the work of Cézanne Van Gogh and Monet crossing Cubism and Futurism to result in Suprematism this statement of the total sovereignty of painting as it is of the triumph of colour which in its very materiality in its resonances its intrinsic energy discloses the abyssal reality in which objects merge until they disappear. Jean-Claude Marcadé postscript in De Cézanne au suprématisme 1993. Known for his pictorial work Malevitch was also a genius theorist. However unlike others his artistic reflection does not precede his work it accomplishes it. He also abandoned creation between 1919 and 1920 to devote himself to this theoretical work which would remain abstruse for many of his contemporaries. The Marxist journal Petchat' i révolyoutsiya will view From Cézanne to Suprematism only as a collection of inept sentences. However it is correct that this short treatise enhancing Suprematist ambition contains noticeable omissions perhaps attributable to official censorship. But these reservations could also be down to Malevitch himself. Indeed published by the Commissariat du peuple à l'Éducation directed by his friend and great defender of the arts Anatoli Lounatcharski this booklet is much more than a simple summary of Malevitch's theoretical work. Rare handwritten inscription from Josef Pankiewicz to Moïse Kisling. Illustrations. Three light minor snags at the top of the spine tiny marginal tears without pieces missing at the top of the first board otherwise pleasant copy. In 1906 Pankiewicz was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. Notably one of his pupils was Moïse Kisling whom he encouraged to abandon sculpture in favor of painting. He introduced the young man to French painting and more specifically Cézanne and Renoir. In 1910 on the advice of his mentor Kisling aged nineteen years old left Poland for Paris where he quickly became a significant figure of Parisian artistic life. M. Arct unknown

Green leatherette covers no page numbers over 200pp colour and B&W sketches and painting of Dutch rural and farm life with handwritten captions in Dutch. Poortvliet has an amazing abilty to capture the life around him and also to create images from his memory. The drawings just seem to pour out of him. The title translates loosly as "Skipping from one subject to another" and this book has illustrations ranging from bird life plants people and dogs images of German soldiers clothing houses and landscapes. Poortvliet died in 1995. For years his works were published by Van Holkema en Warendorf in Bussum where his "Leven en werken van de Kabouter" co-authored by Wil Huygen English title is "Gnomes" went through 59 printings. With the Gnomes series Poortvliet acquired international fame. This series took on a life of its own and was turned into an animated series in 1985. Poortvliet found recognition when Prince Bernhard opened the Rien Poortvliet Museum in 1992. This museum stood in the old historic Town Hall of Middelharnis "Fortunately far away from the modern art gang in Amsterdam" as Poortvliet said in an interview. A heavy book. 4.5 JM 01815. Hardcover.
