Colour woodblock print 38 x 26 cms title cartouches publisher's stamp and artist's signature but without the censor's date stamp sheet a little toned old paper repair at the lower margin not affecting the image but in very good bright condition. Number 41 from the series "One hundred famous views of Edo" Meishō Edo Hyakkei which Hiroshige worked on between 1856 and 1858. This print of Hachiman Shrine in Ichigaya was published a month after his death in 1858 and it was most likely that Hiroshige II contributed to this work. Hachiman Shrine in Ichigaya was founded in the15th century and during the Edo period it attracted many visitors. I do hope that in time the quiet for which our good city was once so celebrated may return and that her denizens may give a thought and a line to those whose hearts are at home tho' their persons are away. Seriously how are you And how is your worthy chum Horn And all our other good men and true The newspapers you sent me were duly received and read with pleasure especially the one containing a notice of our staid 6th street friend William to whom be all honor and glory legal and aquitable. sic As I have by "my preliminary observations" as the orators & ministers say pretty directly called on you for some news you may reasonably expect me to impart some which I should be more happy to do if I had any but having none I must excuse myself by propounding the problem of take nothing from nothing and what remains The answer will give you all the news which so far as this place is concerned is the return of the President & Heads of Department and the various subs connected therewith who had been so fortunate as to have the means and the permission to absent themselves for a summer excursion from this city of magnificent distances dust dems and blue devils. Milliners - store keepers- and hack drivers are making their preparations to reap their annual harvest from the crowd of loafers sharpers gulls politicians legislators office hunters and people of all kinds & descriptions who congregate here during the winter from motives of curiosity business pleasure or dissipation. It would be really worth your while to spend a month or two here in the midst of the season to a man of observation thought and reflection it affords a rare treat. One I am sure you would understand and appreciate tho' I doubt whether you would much enjoy it. Looking merely at the surface it affords an intoxicating sort of pleasure but penetrating too deeply into its mysteries and becoming intimate with it the feeling produced is rather that of disgust and contempt for the sort of human nature that it portrays. Had not my paper run out and my tea bell rung I fear you would have been inflicted with a fit of moralizing brought about by a rainy afternoon and a little self exercise of the "serious second thought" of a poor public officer one of a class which from all accounts don't much indulge in that very necessary exercise of the mental faculty." <br /><br /></p>

He outlines a scientific method of prolonging human life while at the same time developing a series of philosophical and epistemological reflections on mortality. Successor to Claude Bernard in the Collège de France Brown-Séquard here tries to push back the limits of ageing and prolong the nervous responses of the brain: Not to grow old before time and to grow old as late as possible that
is what should preoccupy those who love life or those who without loving it need to ensure it lasts. Brown-Séquard had just published a study on this subject and had succeeded in administering a harmless nervous stimulation with an injection of liquids extracted from animal testicles. Giving the example of the flamboyant Duc de Morny son of Hortense de Beauharnais who died at the age of 53 the professor lays out a theory that is broader than the simple neurological remedy: It depends on the person whether the wheel of life' spins more or less quickly. That certain men like M. de Morny abuse all their faculties and make the wheel turn very quickly is indubitable
The problem in increasing the lifespan of the individual lies therefore for physiologists and doctors in finding what should be avoided and what should be done in order not to increase and indeed to decrease the progress towards natural death. Insisting on the beneficial effects of animal testicle extracts Brown-Séquard compares them with a more nefarious stimulant strychnine discovered a few decades before: I believe I have succeeded in increasing the various force of action of the nerve centers without stimulating exciting or putting them in play which is to say diminishing them by making them expend themselves in action. Testicular liquid acts like strychnine which does not determine the action but which only increases the strength of the reflex in the spinal chord. But the difference is that strychnine leads to a morbidly exaggerated excitability so that the slightest excitement leads to discharges of nervous force. unknown

A tragic dramatic poem. The narrator being the unnamed lover of Maud. He kills her brother in a duel and must flee to France where he later learns that his love Maud has died probably of a broken heart. The distressed poet loses his sanity and imagines he is dead. In the last part his sanity is restored and he leaves to fight in the Crimean War.</p><p>First of the Kelmscott octavo books with a woodcut title. "Finished on the 11th day of August 1893." Barnes & Noble price sticker affixed to the front cover. Commentary by Paul Krassner. This incendiary pamphlet issued by the marginal and modest Olympia Press newly re-established in New York was printed in only a small number of copies. Gender discrimination hate speech and incitement to genocide a violent and unrepentant attempted murder of one of the most celebrated artists of the twentieth century the advocacy of anarchic violence in a grotesque burst of laughter the elimination or humiliation of half of humankind. In her misandrist pamphlet Scum Manifesto « Society for Cutting Up Men » Valerie Solanas shows no empathy grants no room for moderation or reconciliation and makes no exception in her plan to eradicate men save for « the men who methodically work towards their own elimination . such as the transvestites who by their splendid example encourage other men to demasculinize themselves and thus render themselves relatively harmless ». The first manifesto of radical feminism is not addressed solely to women but also embraces in its struggle the sexual identities cast aside by the phallocratic society Solanas sought to destroy with unprecedented rage for such a cause. « Life in this society being at best an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women there remains to civic-minded responsible thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government eliminate the money system institute complete automation and destroy the male sex. » In 1971 Emmanuèle de Lesseps taking on a French version translated this opening as: « Vivre dans cette société c'est au mieux y mourir d'ennui. Rien dans cette société ne concerne les femmes. Alors à toutes celles qui ont un brin de civisme le sens des responsabilités et celui de la rigolade il ne reste qu'à renverser le gouvernement en finir avec l'argent instaurer l'automation à tous les niveaux et supprimer le sexe masculin. » At once an insurrectionary political programme a paranoid delirium and a poetic text Solanas's manifesto unsettles by refusing to be confined to any single genreserious utopian or satirical. The real question posed by such a work may not be one of morality but of the author's right to claim excess. Published after her attempted murder of Andy Warhol Solanass manifesto is the literary and literal assertion that men hold no monopoly on violence. Though presented as an urgent cry of anger SCUM was in fact the product of two years of thought and writing before Solanas lacking a publisher mimeographed it herself in 1967 and sold it on the street 1 for women and 2 for men meeting no success. Seeking recognition Valerie Solanas moved in New Yorks underground scene and became close to the pope of counterculture Andy Warhol frequenting the Factory. Unable to have her manifesto published« the best piece of writing in all of history which will be surpassed only by my next book »Solanas turned to her first literary work: Up Your Ass a play she hoped her mentor would produce. Unfortunately Warhol rejected the piece and lost the only manuscript. In compensation he offered her roles in two of his films. Dissatisfied with this minor artistic recognition on 3 June 1968 she fired three shots at Warhol gravely wounding the artist and achieving instant notoriety. She made no secret that her murderous act more than a personal vendetta was above all a political necessity and an artistic means to secure circulation of her work. The first volume describes the fight of the protagonist Philopater very much similar to the author against the orthodox Calvinism of Voetius and Coccejus with some references to Spinoza and his followers. Since both the orthodox and the more liberal party in the Dutch Republic were attacked it did not arouse too much protest from the authorities. In the second volume Spinoza's ideas are clearly expressed in a more popular way. 'We find in this book without any doubt a rather pure tradition from Spinoza's most intimate circle of friends on the true meaning of difficult points in his teaching' Dunin-Borkowski quoted by Bamberger. The book was severely prosecuted and in 1698 forbidden by the Court of Holland and the States of Friesland.
