Z. Takenouchi. 明治 26 1893. Striking black and white wood engraved illustrations 32pp 26.6 x 19.5cm very good copy. This is a fascinating catalogue of Takenouchi Safes from 1893 with detailed illustrations specifications and prices. Takenouchi was the first safe manufacturer in Japan and the business was very successful numbering the Royal Household and major companies amongst their clients. The idea of the business started soon after Yokohama was opened as a trading port. The founder's father an iron monger was asked to repair a British businessman's safe after it was damaged by fire. He learned how effective the safe was in protecting its contents from the fire. Since fires were frequent and hazardous in Japan his son Zenjiro Takenouchi founded the business to produce fireproof safes in Japan. The company obtained numerous patents and had the reputation for safes that were extremely robust and difficult to break-in. This reputation still survives today. <br> <br>The catalogue includes beautiful engravings of the company's shopfront factory and trademarks and of numerous versions of its safes. These show the thick steel doors which were elegantly decorated with distinctively Japanese designs including images of pine trees. The inner drawers of the safes were made of paulonia wood which protects the contents from humidity. The brochure gives specifications and prices weighing scales also illustrated details of the effectiveness of safes letters of appreciation from clients who managed to rescue their valuables from fire hazards and a list of businesses who used their safes. 1801. Very Good. 16 pages; 17 cm. Plain paper wrapper; stitched. Written on the inside of the front cover: "R. W. Mearns." Written on the inside of the back cover: "Hartsville Pa left at Barley Sheaf." The text indicates that Matthew Grier was 13 years old when he died and left behind a brother and sisters. Before his death he bid farewill to his parents siblings and even "the negroe wench" as well as addressing the neighbors who were there. Mearns delivers lessons to the children and youth of Neshaminy and to their parents about the wisdom of being prepared for death. He also suggests that Matthew was not the first of the Grier children to die saying to the parents: "God seems to be taking away your Children in Succession." In Very Good Condition: wrapper is slightly stained and starting to separate from the tail of the spine; pages are slightly soiled but solid. unknown

1823. Very Good . 1 handwritten letter dated 6 March 1823 from Sir Thomas Cochrane to Captain David Porter of the U.S. Navy expressing condolences over the death of Lt. Cocke who was killed when the Spanish commander in San Juan fired to warn the American ships from entering the port. During the War of 1812 Sir Thomas Cochrane 1789-1872 took part in the burning of Washington D.C. and the attack on Baltimore. New York: Grosset & Dunlap 1910. Includes very rare dust jacket. No date given; circa 1910 based on publisher's address as listed in catalogue. 8vo size pictorial clothbound hardcover with color inlaid illustration on cover and color illustrated dust jacket; 314 toned pages followed by six page publishers catalogue. The inlaid picture on cover and picture on dust jacket are different reflecting the title characters. The illustration on the jacket is signed and we read it as either 'Kiefer' or 'Riefer.' If you know the artist please write and tell us. The back of the jacket lists other volumes from the publisher as do both inside flaps. This was author Mary Jane Holmes 1825 - 1907 first novel and was first published in 1854. It was her most popular of more than 30 novels selling more than a quarter of a million copies during her lifetime. Holmes used her experiences as a teacher living and working in rural Kentucky as inspiration for this novel. The daughters of a rural planter Julia nicknamed Tempest and Fanny nicknamed Sunshine based on their personalities are the titular characters of the novel. In 1910 a silent movie based on the novel also called Tempest and Sunshine was produced. The novel had been adapted into popular plays and skits prior to the movie. This volume is not a movie tie-in featuring stills from the film. From jacket: "A new edition . printed from new large type plates on fine book paper and handsomely bound in cloth with picture inlay on front cover." This book is part of the publisher's Mary J Holmes Series reprints of her novels. We note some rubbing transfer to the jacket red from another volume has transferred and the fragile jacket is chipping along bottom front and top back; there are also some small losses elsewhere on the jacket including flap seams; there is an half inch tear on top and a one inch tear on back and several other smaller tears. The reverse of the jacket has some taped repairs and discoloration. The back of jacket has some light soil or discoloration. Pages 10-15 have light spots on the margin. The book has edgewear and a bumped head and heel of spine. The fep and rep have lightly tanned areas due the jacket flaps. The spine and back of book have foxing or discoloration underneath the dust jacket. Fep has pencilled notations. There are some 'scrapes' on the bottom of book and near the bottom of outside pages that are suggestive of past insect damage. Dealer Direct Payment Only.
