Bound in half green calf spine in six compartments separated by raised bands gilt lettering on one burgundy and one brown label in two compartments intricate gilt tooling in remainder gilt borders on covers marbled endpapers. Profusely illustrated with steel engravings after specially commissioned works by J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Stothard. Samuel Rogers 1763-1855 was an English poet during his lifetime one of the most celebrated although his fame has long since been eclipsed by his Romantic colleagues and friends Wordsworth Coleridge and Byron. His recollections of these and other friends such as Charles James Fox are key sources for information about London artistic and literary life with which he was intimate and which he used his wealth to support. He made his money as a banker and was also a discriminating art collector. In 1814 Rogers made a tour on the Continent with his sister Sarah. He travelled through Switzerland to Italy keeping a full diary of events and impressions and had made his way to Naples when the news of Napoleon's escape from Elba obliged him to hurry home. Seven years later he returned to Italy paying a visit to Byron and Shelley at Pisa. Out of the earlier of these tours arose his last and longest work Italy. The first part was published anonymously in 1822; the second with his name attached in 1828. It was at first a failure but Rogers was determined to make it a success. He enlarged and revised the poem and commissioned illustrations from J.M.W. Turner Thomas Stothard and Samuel Prout. These were engraved on steel in the sumptuous edition of 1830. The book then proved a great success and Rogers followed it up with an equally sumptuous edition of his Poems in 1834. Joseph Mallord William Turner RA 1775- 1851 was an English Romantic landscape painter watercolourist and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. Turner's "delicate and graceful vignettes which are miracles of fine detail seem fairly to float upon the page . Turner's illustrations for this volume.are if anything superior to those for ITALY" - Ray referring to the uniform edition of Rogers's ITALY published the same year. Thomas Stothard 1755 1834 was an English painter and engraver. In 1778 he became a student of the Royal Academy of which he was elected associate in 1792 and full academician in 1794. In 1812 he was appointed librarian having served as assistant for two years. The designs by Stothard have been estimated by art historian Ralph Nicholson Wornum to number five thousand and of these about three thousand have been engraved. RAY 13NCBEL III:181 . ‎Celebrated 19th century little person. Uncommon tinted carte-de-visite photograph 2 3/8" X 4" New York NY 1862. Very good. Decorative backstamp on patterned verso of "Ranger's Photograph Parlors / 28 East Genesee St. / Franklin Buildings / SYRACUSE / N.Y." On the recto within a fine gilt double-rule border a 2 1/8" X 3 3/8" albumen full-length portrait of Houghton has been affixed with fine print caption in red beneath: "Maj. S.E. Houghton / 20 Years Old--Height 31 Inches--Weight 41 lbs." The image is clear and there's a bit of hand tinting -- the top of a small table next to Houghton appears green and a flowing drapery next to that is purple. The card itself shows a slight bit of wear and mild age toning. Houghton along with the better known General and Mrs. Tom Thumb and lesser lights such as Lizzie A. Reed Houghton was another of the sideshow celebrities many of whom adopted military titles who satiated the American public's taste for novelty. This particular card was reissued a number of times both prior to and after this card the only change being in his age. unknown‎

On offer is an original signature by British scholar Jacob Bryant 1715-1804 described as "the outstanding figure among mythagogues who flourished in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries." Bryant saw all mythology as derived from the Hebrew Scriptures with Greek mythology arising via the Egyptians. His chief works were A New System or Analysis of Ancient Mythology 1774–76 and later editions Observations on the Plain of Troy 1795 and Dissertation concerning the Wars of Troy 1796. He also wrote on theological political and literary subjects. This signature is on a piece of cut paper and includes a salutation. Measuring 3 x 1-3/4 inches the uneven cutting demonstrates age toning and minor edge tears not affecting text. Date unknown. Condition is Good. S. ‎England. Good with no dust jacket. Non-Book. On offer is an original signature by an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. The signature is that of Matthew Arnold 1822-1888. Arnold was the son of Thomas Arnold the famed headmaster of Rugby School and brother to both Tom Arnold literary professor and William Delafield Arnold novelist and colonial administrator. Harold Bloom writes that "Whatever his achievement as a critic of literature society or religion his work as a poet may not merit the reputation it has continued to hold in the twentieth century. Arnold is at his best a very good but highly derivative poet unlike Tennyson Browning Hopkins Swinburne and Rossetti all of whom individualized their voices." The writer John Cowper Powys an admirer wrote that "with the possible exception of Merope Matthew Arnold's poetry is arresting from cover to cover – he is the great amateur of English poetry he always has the air of an ironic and urbane scholar chatting freely perhaps a little indiscreetly with his not very respectful pupils." This signature is on a piece of cut paper measuring 2-1/4 x 7/8 inches. It demonstrates age toning and appears to have been taken from a letter. Date unknown. Written is “London March 10 1825 To John Purchas Esq From C Manners Cambridge” preserved on a paper sheet paired with a printed summary of Lord Charles Somerset Manners. Below is signed “M. P. For Cambridge” and “Bro. To D. Of Rutl” likely - Brother to Duke of Rutland. This piece bears a circular date stamp “FREE” postmark with the 1825 date. In the early 1800s British MPs and certain nobles could send and receive mail without postage under a system known as "Franking". These letters would be marked with a “FREE” postmark often in red or black ink and were hand-signed by the MP or peer to validate the privilege C. Manning in this instance. General Lord Charles Henry Somerset Manners KCB 24 October 1780 – 25 May 1855 was a British soldier and nobleman the second son of Charles Manners 4th Duke of Rutland and Lady Mary Somerset. He was lieutenant colonel of the 3rd Hussars in 1815 during the Waterloo campaign. After a brief appointment to the colonelcy of the 11th Regiment of Light Dragoons he was transferred to the colonelcy of the 3rd King's Own Regiment of Dragoons which he retained until his death in 1855. He served as MP for Cambridge from 1802-1830. This document measures 4-½ x 3 inches has a torn right edge of the backing paper with some writing seemingly lost and demonstrates age toning with minor discolouration. Hardcovers bound full publisher's cloth with cover designs embossed in gilt. The bindings are worn and bumped and are now housed in clear mylar or acetate dust jackets. The front hinge of Volume I is cracking and a type of flexible glue appears to have been applied to prevent separation. Text blocks are sound. All edges gilt. Undated but appear to be from the 1840s-1850s. The title pages are printed in dark blue and red. Most if not all of the engravings have their tissue guards. There is a tear in the gutter of the title page and the first leaf of the Table of Contents has a large portion torn away with significant loss of text.
