A Swiss expatriate in Algeria Jean Geiser 1848-1923 was immersed in photography from childhood. In 1852 his mother joined forces with Antoine Alary one of the pioneers of Algerian photography; together they founded a studio which lasted until 1867 when Jean Geiser took charge. Initially specialising in portraits of the city's European bourgeois the photographer quickly understood the city's interest for folk images. These rare and magnificent typical portraits depicting all the layers of the indigenous populations from street children to caïd are today sought after for their ethnographic value testimony of an Algeria at the dawn of colonisation. hardcover

The work is made up of twelve sections all followed by critical notes by Louis-Bernard Guyton de Morveau Pierre Simon de Laplace & Gaspard Monge & Claude Louis Berthollet & Antoine François de Fourcroy. Contemporary half light brown sheep over marbled paper boards smooth leather spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons morocco leather title piece. Very skillfully restored joints. Interior in very good condition except for two marks left by bookmarks on pages 68-69 and 176-177. Rare autograph inscription by Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier to Joseph Louis de Lagrange prominent mathematician and loyal friend to Antoine Lavoisier. Valuable record of the leading role played by Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier in the chemical revolution at the dawn of the French Revolution. Phlogiston theory emerged at the end of the 17th century conceived by Johann Becker and developed by Georg Ernst Stahl postulating the existence of a flame element inherent in combustible bodies and released during combustion. This hypothesis was completely refuted by Lavoisier who revealed the role of oxygen in the combustion process thus inventing the theory of oxidation. Irritated by Lavoisier's skepticism with regard to phlogiston theory the eminent Irish chemist Richard Kirwan published this text titled Essay on Phlogiston. . The French chemists who rallied around Lavoisier decided to respond by translating An Essay on Phlogiston into French. Keiko Kawashima Madame Lavoisier et la traduction française de l'Essay on phlogiston de Kirwan in Revue d'histoire des sciences 2000. This text far from being a simple translation of Kirwan's work adopted the form of a manifesto in itself in which the greatest chemists of the day contested phlogiston theory dissecting its advocates' arguments one by one. The huge success of the French translation led Kirwan to attempt to refute the objections of Lavoisier and his collaborators. In 1789 he published a second edition of his work translating the French notes written by its detractors into English and adding his own refutations. He finally converted to the ideas of the anti-phlogisticians the founders of modern organic chemistry. Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze Mme Lavoisier played a key role in the career of her husband who taught her chemistry at her request; she then became his assistant recording the experiments he carried out and their results. She very quickly took on a role that went beyond that of the devoted wife becoming a translator but also a writer: many of the notes in the Essai sur le phlogistique were written by her. At the height of her involvement it was she in her capacity as a skilled illustrator who drew all the plates in Traité élémentaire de chimie 1789 appending her signature Paulze Lavoisier Sculpsit on this occasion. This specimen includes a rare autograph inscription by the translator Mme Lavoisier to Joseph Louis de Lagrange 1736-1813 one of her husband's closest friends. It was Lavoisier who aroused the interest of Lagrange in the new science of chemistry. Together they participated in the development of a metric system that standardized weights and measures which came to light during the Revolution. Working for the revolutionary government Lagrange had more opportunities than his chemist friend who was executed as a victim of the Terror. This photo taken in 1862 was sold between 1862 and 1871 as evidenced by the photographer's address on the back of the board. Only two of Baudelaire's poses seem to have been retained from this session. If photography is allowed to replace art in some of its functions it will soon have replaced or corrupted it altogether thanks to the natural alliance it will find with the multitude of nonsense wrote Charles Baudelaire in the Salon de 1859. We know of only fifteen different photographic portraits of Baudelaire taken between 1855 and 1866 three sessions at Nadar three at Carjat and one at Neyt for some of which there remains only one copy. Baudelaire and Nadar met in 1843 and their friendship endured until the poet's death in 1867. The photographer shot a total of seven portraits of his friend between 1855 and 1862. The two men full of admiration for one another paid each other moving tributes in their respective works: Baudelaire dedicated Le rêve d'un curieux The dream of a curious man in Les Fleurs du Mal to the photographer who dedicated to him in addition to the photographic caricatures and portraits an unvarnished work titled Charles Baudelaire intime: le poète vierge 1911. This Roman Catholic-turned-Presbyterian clergyman emigrated to America from Italy in 1888 and was soon named evangelical pastor of The Presbyterian Institutional Church where he became influential in converting New England Italians to Presbyterianism and was named to the high office of Superintendent of the Presbytery; in 1914 he moved to Chicago where he became pastor and director of the noted Saint John Presbyterian Church. Signed Program titled "Saint John Presbyterian Church. Program Dedication Week" small 4to 6" X 9¼" stiff pictorial wrappers Chicago Illinois 1930 May 18-25. Very good. Quit minor edgewear but overall tight and attractive. Handsome 12-page program for the dedication and opening of this new church. On the large margin beneath an oval frontispiece head-and-shoulders portrait of DeCarlo he signs in full large and bold in black fountain pen. Most of program consists of special services throughout the dedication week. Quite attractive and unusual. paperback

Appealing example of a tool used in Javanese batik art: the copper stamping tool cap or tjap with a geometric design framed and embedded in teak. The embedding of batik cap designs was developed by a craftsman later dubbed "The Cap Man" in Jakarta in the early 1970s and in response to local demand and from the tourist trade. 'Increase vigilance and defend the motherland' postcard-sized propaganda prints 16 in total 15 individual images 1 in duplicate 4 missing from the original set of 20. Most are designed by People's Arts Societies in various provinces and cities each with a different slogan. Prints have been well used some slightly soiled with pin marks. Interestingly two have pencil grid lines drawn on them probably with the plan to paint enlargements. The images are still bright with clear slogans front and back. 12.9 x 9.4cm These little prints warn about unspecified foreign enemies urging the people to get prepared to do battle. . 安徽省革命委员会出版发行局. The offences of which these two unfortunate people were accused of where anti-revolution revisionism and being a chief culprit in suppressing the Cultural Revolution. Real Life in China. A Trip Through the Mysterious Forbidden City Over the Great Wall of China and Other Famous Places.

Printed handbill 4pp bifolium 20 x 14cms four black and white photographic illustrations and text within borders original folds small edge tears early pencilled annotation "Milwaukee -- 1915" at the foot of the front page and a couple of interior doodles a little dusty especially at the folds but overall in very good condition. Exceedingly scarce unrecorded handbill advertising Benjamin Brodsky's documentary "Real Life in China.the most interesting and educational photoplay ever produced in 8 big reels" and only the first of a two part film intended to be shown with a lecture by Brodsky himself. The handbill claims "Mysteries are mysteries no longer under the searching eye of the camera and the walled in and superstition-locked glories of China are brought forth as evidence of the real wonder of the celestial empire". <br> <br>The four captioned photographic illustrations show: A pagoda; Pumping water on the rice fields; Grinding the Rice and a Chinese Prisoner in stocks. <br> <br>The US National Film Preservation Foundation on whose site a remarkable fragment of the film has been preserved and is viewable notes that: <br> <br>"On the eve of World War I as the political struggles in China made the news Americans knew little about the vast and mysterious country of more than four hundred million people. But by the end of 1917 there were at least 10 documentaries available to satisfy curiosity about America’s new ally in the Far East. Virtually all were short subjects that like the Burton Holmes travelogues from Paramount played alongside features. Travel shorts with a more educational slant continued in circulation through schools and nonprofit groups for years afterward. <br> <br>Of these offerings the hugely ambitious Trip through China was “so vastly different from the general run of tour films that it stands in a class by itself” wrote Motion Picture News. Five years in the making or a less probable ten in some tellings the documentary was the brainchild of Benjamin Brodsky a widely traveled Russian-born businessman who claimed to speak 11 languages. According to a 1912 Moving Picture World profile the young entrepreneur had moved to China from San Francisco after the 1906 Earthquake and set up shop as a film exhibitor. A Trip through China was probably fashioned from the 20000 feet of negative that Brodsky brought back to San Francisco in 1915. Versions screened locally nine months later and in Los Angeles the following year. When distribution went national in March 1917 the ten-reeler was heralded as a “revelation.” . Print quality and assembly variable e.g. one page irrelevant to the topic is included upside down. Some small stains various pages 3b written in red ink on front page the character 忠 written in red pencil in two places. 20pp paper a little browned and soiled. 27 x 19.5cm.
