Of particular interest in this newspaper is the inclusion of photographic illustrations of the central leadership formed during the first plenary session of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China with a brief biography of each leader on pages 2 and 3. The front page features photographic illustrations of newly elected members of the Politburo Standing Committee: Jiang Zemin; Li Peng; Qiao Shi; Li Ruihuan; Zhu Rongji; Liu Huaqing; and Hu Jintao. This edition of the People's Daily celebrates the 5th anniversary of the Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship Alliance and Mutual Assistance signed in 1950 with congratulatory messages the text of speeches on cooperation details of USSR's assistance to China and explanations about why China had been lagging behind industrially and economically. Although privately less than happy with some aspects of the treaty China had to appear enthusiastic in the public arena. The talking-up of China's relationship with the USSR would have been seen as essential at this time; just a month prior the US had signed a Mutual Defense Treaty with the Republic of China and drawn up the 'Formosa Resolution' authorising the use of US forces to defend Taiwan. <br> <br>The front page features a wide-angle photographic illustration of the celebration of the Fifth Anniversary of the signing of the Sino-Soviet Treat of Friendship Alliance and Mutual Assistance; in the front row L to R are Chen Shutong Dong Biwu Shen Junru Lin Boqu Liu Shaoqi Song Qinlin Guo Moruo Luo Maijin Russian Delegate Zhou Enali Li Jishen Wu Yuzhang Peng Zhen and Huang Yanpei. Former owner was Gerald Eades Bentley 1901-1994 the author of the foundational seven-volume work The Jacobean and Caroline Stage as well as other works on Shakespeare and other authors of the English Renaissance. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1929 to 1945 when he became the Murray Professor English at Princeton University. He made pencilled marginal notes throughout this publication each entry marked with either "OK" or crossed out. Although Bentley's name is not in this it was acquired along with other works on allusions to Shakespeare in which he had written his name and made identical marginal notes. Very scarce. ‎The Doctrines of Friends: Or Principles of the Christian Religion as Held By The Society of Friends Commonly Called Quakers‎

‎Montpleasant Ohio: Elisha Bates 1825. The author was a prominent Friend or Quaker in Ohio during the 1820s and 1830s. Bates became the publisher of The Philanthropist from 1818 to 1822. The Philanthropist was the first anti-slavery newspaper in the United States and also supported temperance and the fair treatment of Native Americans. Bates began publishing another periodical The Moral Advocate in March 1821. Bates also became the leader of the Mount Pleasant Meeting of the Society of Friends Quakers. Bates' only book this volume was self-published in 1825. Author Donald Good in his 1969 article "Elisha Bates and Social Reform" states that Bates' Doctrine of Friends was "judged to be one of the best brief accounts of Friends' view in existence." After the publication of his book dramatic changes began to foment within the Quakers religion with what became known as the Hicksite - Orthodox Schism. Bates who favored Orthodoxy was a staunch opponent of Elias Hicks the Hicks in Hicksite who favored liberalism. Bates became a controversial figure. He was disowned converted to Methodist and became a Methodist minister. He late returned to Quakerism. There are three signatures and a personal library stamp on flyleaf - this book has a historical provenance: the first signature is that of Wyman Chamberlain 1772-1838 followed by "his book." Chamberlain was the son of a Revolutionary war soldier and a prominent member of the Friends congregation of Grand Isle Vermont. The next signer in pencil was Mary Chamberlain 1808-1887. Genealogy research suggests that Mary was likely Wyman's daughter-in-law the wife of his only son William. The last signer in ink was Reba B. Hoag. Reba was the sister of Mary the sister-in-law of William and the step-daughter of Wyman. She lived with her sister and brother-in-law. Lastly there is also a personal library stamp of Jed P. Clark. Mr. Clark 1825-1906 was the son of Joseph Clark a very prominent man in Milton Vermont who is still revered today as one of its founding fathers. Jed P. Clark succeeded his father as the owner of the largest town industry - a saw mill and grist mill in Milton Falls Vermont and a director of the Vermont & Canada and Central Vermont railroads. Items related to Jed P. Clark's mercantile store such as its script are still collectible today. Clark was also briefly one of Milton's postmasters. We contacted one of the Quaker libraries and were told that it was "interesting that someone at Grand Isle had Bates' book because Bates was not in agreement with the kind of Quakerism that was practiced there." This is a very interesting and culturally important book particularly for the history of the author and owners. Full leather binding 320 pages. The book has wear commensurate with age: the leather is worn; binding is split at outside back seam with the hinge held on by one stitch. Bumped corners. Dark tanning and foxing to pages. A leaf or flower was pressed into the back of the book and has left its imprint on the last several blank pages. Penciled price notes on inside cover and fep. Number penciled at top of Preface page. ‎Indonesia. Before1970s. Water buffalo hide and pigment 42 x 16 cms painted both sides affixed to a spliced horn baton some surface wear and loss of pigment overall in good condition. Figure of a Pocong used in the Javanese and Balinese 'wayang kulit' or leather shadow puppet theatre tradition. <br> <br>A pocong is a ghost in the form of a corpse wrapped in its burial shroud. The deceased are typically wrapped in a white cloth which is tied at several places including feet torso and neck. Burial is often without a casket. Before closure of a grave the ties must be loosed so that the spirit of the person is released. If not they are doomed to wander the world haunting the living and places at will. Belief has it that they sometimes haunt bamboo or bannana tree groves in order to befriend the living. <br> <br>During early Covid lockdown in Java neighbourhoods would block road access to enforce curfew with one or two people dressed as pocongan as a warning to trespassers. <br> <br>Purchased in Java in the early 1970s. . hardcover‎

Virtually unbumped spine head and tail with sharp corners. The leather appears unblemished except for trivial rubbing to the spine head and tail and to the four corners. Overall the binding is immensely clean. Text block very solidly attached to the binding. With unnumbered pages of plates. With a color vignette in the title page plus XV color plates including five fold-out panoramic views of Port Nicholson/Wellington town and harbor of Nelson Blind Bay Ruamahanga and New Plymouth. ‎Perennials: Selections from the Writings of the Right Reverend Phillips Brooks Arranged for Each Day of the Year‎

‎New York: E.P. Dutton 1900. This is a very rare edition published in 1900. Narrow 12mo size pictorial hardcover with bright gilt titles on spine and front cover; 160 pages. Phillips Brooks 1835 - 1893 was an Episcopal clergyman and Rector at Boston's Trinity Church. Well known during his lifetime he delivered a sermon at the funeral of United States President Abraham Lincoln. He was a requested speaker worldwide and delivered a sermon at Westminster Abbey. He was elected the sixth Bishop of Massachusetts in 1891 and served in that capacity until his death. Bishop Brooks is remembered in the Episcopal liturgical calendar on January 23. Several schools were named in his honor as was the Phillips Brooks House now the Phillips Brooks House Association a student volunteer association at Harvard College his alma mater. A statue of Brooks by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens is located outside Trinity Church in Boston. The author of several volumes of sermons Brooks may be best known as the lyricist of the Christmas carol O Little Town of Bethlehem. This posthumously published book is designed in a daily meditation format starting with January first and going through to year end with a brief quotation for each day. The cover is done in a white or cream colored leatherette from the spine outward to midpoint with a smooth white panel over that. The back is plain and the front has a color illustration of a woman holding flowers and decorated with holly sprigs and berries. Our third photo shows the book under flash. Edgewear bumped and worn head and heel of spine worn bottom corners. Light colored covers have some wear and soil and there appears to be a watermark only on the top corner of back cover. The marks on the left side of cover are actually an absence or wear to "paint" not soil. Inscription on fep and a genealogical notation on inside front cover. Penciled notations on rear endpage small spot on margin of inside back cover and rear endpage. Some tiny spots or light foxing on outside pages. We note one previously folded page corner and pages 97/98 have been torn out it was the beginning of an essay Luther - His Faith and Work and is missing. The first publication of this famed poem was in January 1845 in the American Review another literary compendium under the pseudonym Quarles. Gough 1817-1886 was a well-known temperance orator and public speaker. After the death of his mother in 1835 Gough became an alcoholic. It cost him his family. In 1842 he attended a temperance meeting and signed a pledge to abstain from alcohol. Successful in the struggle to stop drinking Gough devoted his life to temperance reform. He traveled the world giving more than 5000 temperance lectures during his career. Later in his career he also spoke on other issues. This book contains his lectures on both temperance and on other subjects. Gough published six books during his lifetime. This collection was published posthumously but was planned or produced prior to his death. 8vo size brown clothbound hardcover with embossed borders front and back with bright gilt titles and illustrations on cover. The book paginates to 622 pages - but this is a sample book - and it includes only a selection of what would have been in the finished book. We estimate that it numbers about 200 pages. The pages aren't missing - they weren't included in the sample. It is profusely illustrated with black and white decorations and engravings throughout. After page 622 there is a testimonial section followed by the the order taking section a section of lined paper for the orders to be filled in. All of these sections are bound into this one volume. It looks like this book traveled the world. We can see orders for Boston Cleveland and also orders for Hungary. At some point in the book's history it looks like a young child filled in some of the what were then blank order pages in pencil. There is also a page penciled "I love you with all my heart." Perhaps written by the lad's mother. Interspersed with the child's play are the actual order pages domestic and foreign. There are two or three pages in this section that appear to have been used for order some pages in this section were written on by the child and other pages are blank. This unique volume has some external war and tear. Covers have some wear and bright gilt titles on front cover are a little rubbed. Bumped and worn corners; edgewear. Fraying to top and bottom of spine and small chip on side. External tear to spine allows you to see the newsprint using in the manufacturing process. Salesman's sample is penciled on the flyleaf along with price. Name written on inside cover. Half inch tear on bottom of title page and quarter inch tear on bottom of opposite pace. Frontispiece has left ghostly sepia transfer on preceding pages. Inside back cover had something pasted in now gone that has left stain on printed back endpaper and preceding pages. Several pages in the back of the book have some soil to page margins including the first page in the testimonial section and there may be spots of soil on other pages. Four folded leaves 8 pages stapled. Upper paper wrapper heavily foxed with light foxing on other leaves upper wrapper detached but still holding at second staple. Wang Hongwen is portrayed in these writings as a political liar and hypocrite who pretended to be a gentleman while placing himself above Mao and presenting himself as a hero in a bid to seize power. ‎1919 Diary of the Business-Minded Matriarch of the La Fox Illinois Potter Family Who Were Integral in the Region’s Growth in the Late 1800s‎

‎La Fox Illinois Kane County. Good with no dust jacket. 1919. On offer is the incredible 1919 diary of Annie M. Barker Potter 1840-1933 kept when she was the 79-year-old widow of La Fox Blackberry Township Kane County Illinois visionary Lemuel Milk Potter 1830-1897. Originally of the Plymouth Massachusetts Barkers Annie married fellow Massachusetts native sea captain and widower Lemuel Milk Potter in 1863. That same year Annie and Lemuel alongside Annie’s brother Henry H. Barker 1848-1889 moved to La Fox Kane County Illinois. The entrepreneurial Lemuel became a key player in La Fox’s early development. In collaboration with Henry Lemuel purchased an interest in Frederick Dean’s store and renamed it Potter’s General Store. He and Henry also constructed a grain elevator and a cheese factory which was converted to a creamery and later became a meeting place La Fox Hall in La Fox. Lemuel also had a large residence built for his own family in La Fox. SEE BIO NOTES FOLLOWING LISTING FOR MORE ON THE POTTERS. Annie and her adult children were actively involved in the thriving Potter family businesses at the time she kept this diary. A large number of her entries relate to her role within the business. Annie comments regularly on the Potter’s general store her investments financial transactions and business dealings as the inferred manager of the Potter’s other properties. It is impressive that Annie a female in her golden years was still respected as a key player in the business by the surviving Potter men. She was also very socially engaged involved in women’s clubs and keenly aware of the comings and goings of members of the community. Some excerpts of her diary which cover the year of 1919 give the flavour of her entries and her relationships with the larger Potter family: “Charlie Eatman and Blanche and Althea are here. I have been writing to Alden” Feb 23. “Recd of CA Potter to apply on principal of loan $100 and I paid that into the store this top up all the loans on the trust deed of $3500 except a little interest” April 12. “I went down town with Doc nickname for her son Charles and sent my $15.00 Liberty Loan off to be registered and I got the int on my $25.00 Liberty loan also on my $14.00 liberty loan The 60 Club met at Mrs. Caldwell’s. My int on loans was $50 50 on one and 30 30 on the other” April 24. “Had a telegram from Angie that Everett Chaffee died suddenly today. Frank Pudds wife also died today. Rec’d…note $6.00 took this to store and got the money on it” May 27. “I’ve been copying my statement and making out my yearly statement. A hard wind storm has just come up and we think it may take some of the strawberries. We are beginning to have them going to have quite a lot. Tayler paid me rent to Dec 15 1919 $48.00” June 11. “Have just written to Lizzie about the change over w the store. Arlo and Bill have been to St. Charles Doc and Grace were up tonight to talk business” Oct 16. “Got word from Doc that he had heard from Herbert that it was all right to sell the property” Oct 24. “All the Finns were up…for dinner tonight we went to Elburn on the O. E. R. To the entertainment…got home about 1 o’clock” Nov 21. “I was sick all night last night and all the forenoon. Got my check from Scott Washburn for rent. 6.00 for Dec 1919” Nov 30. As well as keeping her diary nearly every day for the year of 1919 Annie also kept good track of her finances in the Cash Account section at the back of the diary providing a clear picture of her transactions and financial habits. This diary provides an insightful peek into the business and personal dealings of the La Fox Illinois Potter family who were vital in the building up of the community and whose work in La Fox still stands today. Annie is a strong elderly woman who is more active than many women half her age. She is obviously extremely savvy in business and finance. This diary would be a valuable addition to the collection of any historian or anyone interested in the role of women in business in the early 20th century the experiences of widows of entrepreneurs in maintaining family legacies and those interested in the Potter family or pioneering residents of Illinois in general in particular Kane County. Diary measures approximately 5x3 inches. Cover is chipping slightly but the spine and pages are all intact. Diary is 90% complete and writing is legible. Overall Good. BIO NOTES: Lemuel Milk Potter of Massachusetts first married Elizabeth A. Davis 1835-1855 in May of 1854. Together they had one son Alden Howland Potter 1855-1933. Following Elizabeth’s death only two months after Alden’s birth Lemuel married Annie M. Barker also of Massachusetts in 1863. Annie was born to William and Rebecca Potter Barker. Together Annie and Lemuel had five children: James 1866-1906 Arthur b. 1872 died in infancy Nellie Emma 1874-1899 Charles “Doc” Arthur Potter Sr. 1878-1966 and Elizabeth Potter Wing 1868-1955. Prior to becoming a force of nature almost single-handedly building up La Fox Illinois Lemuel worked as a whaling captain from May 1859 through June 1863. He left the ship he was captaining the “Mary Ann” in June of 1863 and married Annie that October. They moved to La Fox Illinois after they married. Lemuel’s first child Alden Howland Potter married Jane Carr Bliss 1861-1929. They were parents to Alden Archibald Potter 1884-1961 Zenas Lemuel Potter 1886-1958 Jessica Potter Broderick Johnson 1896-1991. The Potter family has remained very important in Kane County with Potters constructing or buying at least 12 buildings in La Fox. The Potter and Barker Grain Elevator which Lemuel and Henry built in 1868 was an important grain transfer point and was added to the United States’ National Register of Historic Places in 2016. ‎1873-1882 Archive of Diaries of a Student At Bowdoin College and Then Harvard Medical School Plus Diaries of His Future Wife‎

On offer are six 6 original handwritten diaries belonging to Edwin Flye Stetson and Mary Chapman Stetson both of Maine. Edwin Flye Stetson 1853-1924 was born in Damariscotta Maine to Abner Stetson a shipbuilder and Betsey Riggs Stetson. He was educated at preparatory schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy before entering Bowdoin College in 1874. He attended Bowdoin for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Harvard Medical School in the fall of 1876. In 1883 Edwin married Mary Chapman 1856-1944 of Newcastle Maine. They would have four children together: Helen 1884 Rufus Edwin 1886 Grace Lunt 1891 and Mary Elvira 1894. Edwin Flye Stetson's diaries cover 1873 1874 1875 and 1877. In 1873 Stetson is a student at we presume Lincoln Academy in Newcastle Maine. In 1874 he completes his secondary education and even comments forlornly on the end of his time as a school boy on July 1 1874: “Sitting out…the last time I will ever sit here as a schooler most likely…good bye old house school days where are all over here”. He begins his education at Bowdoin in the fall of 1874 after a false start getting left behind on his first attempt to go to Brunswick ME on September 23 he finally arrives at his dorm on the 25th. He writes of his time at Bowdoin from Sept-Dec 1874 and throughout his 1875 diary. By 1877 Stetson is living in Boston and attending Harvard Medical School. Mary Chapman's later Stetson diaries cover 1880 and 1882. She would marry Edwin in 1883. In 1873 Edwin is a 20-year old student we believe at Lincoln Academy. Some excerpts follow: “February 12th Cut wood a little while today. Go over to the hall in the afternoon and helped fix it up a little for the great ball Friday night. Everite has gone to Augusta and I have got to stop in the store tonight. ” In June he takes a trip to St. John’s on a ship and spends a few months camping and relaxing for the summer”. “June 23rd and 24th Start for St. Johns this morning. I am tired of riding. Wish I was there….Arrive in St. Johns 7 o’clock this morning. Go up to the Victoria Hotel to breakfast. Stay in the ship all day with Wilder. Like it. Think I shall run across to L. With them. Go up where the folks are tonight. Turn in at 10 o’clock happy”. “July 2nd Father called me at 4 o’clock this morning. Devil of a hurry as usual. Boat starts from B. At 6 o’clock. Arrive in Rockland at 12 m. Get home 3 o’clock.Have a gay time. I tell ye fine bedfellow”. He returns to school in September 1873: “Finish sawing pine wood this forenoon. Get some in. Sent ma the note tonight. Dance in the hall. Don’t go. Sobered down quite an old man now. Things that I once loved I now hate and things that I once hated I now love. Whiskey &c. ”. 1873 is written almost entirely in pencil and there has been some serious smudging on some day’s entries. This is not too common but for the couple days smudged over they cannot be comprehended fully. 1874 is much the same as the previous diary recordings of his day-to-day tasks and life experiences often dealing with girls drinking school and friends. He begins school at Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine in the fall of 1874: “February 12th Our annual ball tonight. The best time I ever had. Home at 5 o’clock. We go over and sit and smoke with Jones until ½ after 6. Home do my work and turn in”. “September 26. Got my books today and fooled around a little. Went down to Dunnings to tea tonight but don’t like much…”. “October 15. School adjourned this PM on account of the fair. Eve and I went over. Joined the Society tonight. Heard from Mother today…became a member of the Zeta Psi Society tonight 2am…”. “November 18. A new member in the freshman class. Purrington entered today or rather came today got his ticket last year. Class meeting again for election of officials as split before”. In 1875 Stetson is completing his freshman year and beginning his sophomore year at Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine: “January 9th Started for school today in a snow storm. Got here all night but am everlastingly lonesome homesick for anything you please”. “January 12th I have studied like the very-D. Today and taken a dead for it. If it wasn’t for the corks of the thing I’d pack my books send them home and strike for parts unknown to man or east. I’m fairly discouraged. If I had a ‘drop of the old creature’ I believe I’d indulge a little”. In college Edwin is sometimes struggling homesick lonely and ‘dead broke’. He writes once that one “Can’t say that I have had a very good time outside of home” In the summer his parents and his brother Abner visit him. This doesn’t help too much though. “July 27th & 28th Ab came down this afternoon but wouldn’t stay. He has been at home now over a week and I am unable to read him. I fear he has changed mightily or else he is acting it…. Picnic today. Don’t care much about it but must go. Wish I hadn’t gone. Never had a much poorer time. Wish I had gone when I had a good mind to Oh! Dear! Things are not just as I would have them but when will they ever be different ” Edwin’s last diary is in 1877 written in Boston Massachusetts where he is attending Harvard Medical School. He is doing better at Harvard obviously studying very hard but seeming to enjoy the struggle. “January 21 1877. In the last 84 hours I have slept 6 tried to sleep today but could not”. “March 1 Worked in the lab until 11. After lecture in anatomy went down to the store and got my collars came home and studied on anatomy until supper time. Down to dissecting room this eve then Rob & I went down to Miller’s. ” He attends classes on Chemistry Physiology Anatomy and others. He is incredibly studious during this time: “Studied till 11 - a very pleasant day - down to Chemistry - studied till after 2.” The entries thin out a bit by the end of the year probably due to end of year exams. There is one entry from another time that Edwin has added in about his father’s death: “November 4th 1878. Monday. Father died at 1.45 P. M. Today. I arrived on the 4 P. M. Train. ” Mary’s diaries begin in 1880. She spends much of the year in school and in the summer takes a trip out to Iselboro Maine: “February 17th Pleasant. School all day. Got real tired and am fairly sick this eve. I stretched out on the sofa and was thankful that Uncle Billie did not come. Mamma is not very well either. But we are very happy at being all together in our bright little home. Saw Addie”. “April 28th Pleasant and warm. We began school at 8 this morning and let out at ten as to attend Mr. French’s funeral. The remains were placed in the Hall. He looked very natural. The Mason’s buried him. They looked very nice and there were a great many. Papa was among them. Luda came home to dinner with me. Went to school this P. M. Mr. Thurlow tried experiments. Went over town got my dress. Had quite a time”. Mary was extremely ill during the middle of the year. She explains her illness which lead to a gap in her diary entries. By the time she begins writing again she is back to her old self: “May 2nd 1880. Something did happen. I was taken sick that very eve that the last page was written and have had a long drag of six weeks been very sick with fever and been badly poisoned and salirated by Dr. Rob. No one knows what I have suffered but myself. I will pass over the next six weeks in silence since I only lay in bed. Everybody was as good as possible. ”“July 31st Seaside House. Quite pleasant. Got up early. Had to hurry to get to the boat at 8. All came to Isleboro where we were to stop a week. We enjoyed the sail down the river. This is a pretty place about thirty regular boarders. A very good hotel cottages and tents look pretty. We spent the P. M. Tramping up on the hill. Sat on the beach this eve with Joe and Nellie. I think we will have a pleasant time here”. “November 1st Pleasant. Examination at school. I got very indignant at Mr. Kelley for adjourning school to go to Waterville to vote and refused to close the school for him. I could not help it. He went off in such a mean way. I am sorry tho that I did not accommodate him but I was as right as he was”. “November 3rd Pleasant. I opened school at half past nine and when Mr. Kelley came we had a strong discussion. I was provoked and so was he. I wish I had not meddled with him at all since he is little he cannot take an explanation or talk without arguing. Home this eve. The Republicans have got their 329. Garfield. I am sorry for the country”. Mary’s 1882 diary is similar. She continues with her studies is very active in church and school politics and seems to be a generally pleasant young woman. Though this is the oldest diary in the archive it does not yet mention her meeting Edwin and it is uncertain when and how they would meet. Mary’s diaries are considerably smaller than Edwin’s and her handwriting can be occasionally quite small and cramped but this does not inhibit comprehension too often. These diaries would be an exceptional addition to the collection of anyone interested in Maine's history 19th century medical education 19th century Bowdoin College or Harvard or the experiences of men and women prior to settling down to form a family. Edwin’s 1873 diary is about 3/4 full of entries but the 1874 1875 and 1877 diaries are completely full of handwritten entries of a mostly easily comprehensible and clear script. For Mary’s diaries the 1880 diary has entries everyday until May 3rd and then there are blank pages until early June. After June 7th Mary is faithful to the diary and there are full entries until the end of the year. Mary's 1882 diary has steady entries up to February 20th then blank until May 4th and then after that she keeps her diary intermittently filling about 50% of the pages for the rest of the year. Most of the diaries have other papers and ephemera either stuck in between pages or in the little pouches in the front and back of the diary. These are mostly receipts for medical supplies and medicines as well as some short letters. Diaries range in size from 4x3 inches to 7.5x3.5 inches. They are overall in Good condition with some more age-worn than others. Pages and covers all appear to be intact some loosening of spines but no significant separation.
