Many maps are included some draqn by the soldiers themselves. Information about the three training camps were the companies from each Georgia Counties. C1810 Manuscript Document on Surrogate Appointment Signed Sir John Thomas Duckworth Commander-In-Chief and Governor of Newfoundland
Newfoundland Labrador Canada. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1810. On offer is an original manuscript document signed by Sir John Thomas Duckworth K. B. Vice Admiral of the Red 1748-1817 during his time as commander-in-chief and Governor of Newfoundland. Duckworth was born in Surrey England and attended Eton College before entering the Royal Navy in 1759. Late in his impressive military career Duckworth was appointed commander-in-chief and Governor of Newfoundland on March 26 1810. He served in this role until he resigned on December 8 1812. In late 1813 Thomas became a member of parliament for New Romney. He became a baronet in November 1813 and commander-in-chief of Plymouth naval base in 1815 He was made GCB on January 2 1815.This undated document can be traced to a day between late-March and late-July of 1810 during Duckworths first few months as commander-in-chief and Governor of Newfoundland. In the document Duckworth is identified as Vice Admiral of the Red. Records show he was not made a full Admiral until July 31 1810. The document signed by Duckworth blanks not filled in relates to a surrogate appointment. From 1729 until around 1825 Newfoundlands Governors appointed lower-ranking British Naval Officers as Surrogates or Deputy Governors to oversee Newfoundland districts and act as judges to settle disputes during autumn quarter sessions Surrogate Court with the help of civil justices of the peace. The letter is transcribed below: Sir John Thomas Duckworth K. B. Vice Admiral of the Red Governor and Commander in Chief in and all over the Island of NewfoundlandWhereas by an Act of Parliament forged in the forty ninth year of His Majestys Reign entitled An Act for establishing Courts of Judicature in the Island of Newfoundland and the Islands adjacent and for re-annexing Part of the Coast of Labrador and the Island lying on the said Coast to Government of Newfoundland land it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor of the Island of Newfoundland from time to time to institute Courts of Civil Jurisdiction to be called Surrogate Courts in different parts of the Island of Newfoundland and the Islands adjacent as accession shall require with full power and authority to hear and determine in a summary way all Suits and Complaints of a civil nature arriving within the Island of Newfoundland and on the Island of St. Pierre and and Miquelon and on the Island and Sea to which ships or vessels repair from the Island of Newfoundland for carrying on the fishery and on the Banks of Newfoundland and in Great Britain or Ireland which Courts - respectively shall be Courts of Record and shall determine according to the law of England as far as the same can be applied to Suits and complaints arising in the Islands and Places aforesaid and the said Courts respectively shall be holden by a Surrogate to be appointed from time to time by the Governor of said islands and shall have full power and authority to have and determine all suits and complaints cognizable in the said Courts - Be it known that by the authority vested in me as Governor of the island of Newfoundland and its dependencies. 1929 Original Draft of a Genealogy Book on the Ellis Family of Mayfield Maine and Hartstown Pennsylvania Which Would be Published in 1936
Mayfield Maine Hartstown Pennsylvania. Fair with no dust jacket. 1929. Softcover. On offer is a detailed draft of a book tracing the roots of the Ellis Family who resided in Mayfield Maine and Hartstown Pennsylvania. The draft was written by a son of Silence Ford Ellis of the Pennsylvania Ellis lineage. The author of this manuscript is Milo H. Miller 1863-1951. Miller was the author of two books each thoroughly researched genealogical treasures focused on the history of his family. He published A History and Genealogy of the Miller Family 1725-1933 tracing his fathers roots in 1933 and A History and Genealogy of the John Ellis Family 1797-1935 tracing his mothers roots in 1936. This 1929 manuscript is an early draft of the latter. To learn more about Milo Miller SEE BIO NOTES following this listing. The draft manuscript is largely handwritten in Millers tidy hand. He has divided the book into chapters based on the specific branch of the Ellis family he is following and included a section with images and relevant maps. He has written the title page Table of Contents and Preface in pencil. As well as a Preface about the importance of preserving family history and his labor of love and citing his reason for being the one to take on the task: The need of preserving the records during the lifetime of many of the older members of the family seemed imperative; and this seemed like an opportune time to compile such valuable genealogical data for upon such records is based much of the knowledge
sought by historical and genealogical societies. The preface is extremely similar to the one Miller would ultimately publish in 1936. The following pages contain Millers typed pages intended for the book which he has glued into the larger pages of the draft as well as pencil-drawn family trees glued in newspaper articles relating to the people and places he is writing about and a hand drawn map of Mayfield Township featuring John Ellis farm. To give a sense of the content of the manuscript some of the titles of the pages in the draft follow: Explanation of the Map of John Ellis Farm Historical Sketch related to John Ellis and the farm Military Service of Benjamin an Enoch Ellis Sketch of Abner Ellis Military Service of Nathan F. Ellis The Death of John Ellis and Philander Coburn Ellis. There is a typed transcription of two Civil war letters between members of the Ellis family in 1863 and further pages discussing the Ellis family in the Civil War. Sadly Miller has cut rectangles out of some of the pages in order to extract photographs he had glued in. It appears he removed the photos in order to create photo pages for the book. The original photos and the cardboard on which they are pasted are included in this collection and the photos can also be seen in his 1936 book. Unfortunately cutting out the photos has impacted several of the family trees Miller drew with big chunks missing from the middle. It also appears Miller removed other content likely for use in the final book. Regardless of any imperfections of this draft manuscript it contains terrific insight into how a genealogist made connections and put his research into a condensed and readable format. It also provides awesome insight into familial connections in Pennsylvania and Maine. This would be a terrific addition to a collection or research arsenal of anyone interested in genealogy Pennsylvania Maine or the evolution of familial lineage. BIO NOTES ON MILO H. MILLER: Milo H. Miller was born to his brother to parents Samuel K. Miller 1822-1896 and Silence Ford Ellis 1828-1899 just outside of Hartstown PA. Milo and his brother Myron Manson Miller 1859-1949 were raised in Hartstown. Milo attended the Edinboro Normal School and Allegheny College. He worked as an education professional following graduation and his hobby was genealogy. He worked as a principal and head of schools in Girard and Knoxville and a principal in McKeesport. In 1894 Milo married Maude Moriarty 1870-1942. They had two children Florence Imogen Miller later Willison and Ellis Miller. Milo devoted much time to genealogical research. Milo retired from education in 1933. A few months after Maude died in September of 1942 Milo travelled to California to stay with Ellis and his family and eventually made his own home in California. The manuscript draft contains approximately 45 pages of content. The collection also includes seven photo boards with original photos cut and glued on to carefully measured boards containing labeled photos of 39 members of the Ellis family organized by family tree. The manuscript is paper bound and intact save for Millers cutouts and a few pages of content that have come unglued from the larger manuscript. 1940s Archive of Manuscript Research Documents Painstakingly Compiled by a Prominent Crawford Pennsylvania Citizen for His Unpublished Book history of Hartstown

On offer is an exciting collection of the thorough research conducted by a career educator published author and serious genealogist focusing on his hometown of Hartstown Crawford County Pennsylvania and the neighbouring West Fallowfield Township. The researcher/author is one Milo H. Miller 1863-1951. Miller was the author of two books each thoroughly researched genealogical treasures focused on the history of his family. He published A History and Genealogy of the Miller Family 1725-1933 tracing his fathers roots in 1933 and A History and Genealogy of the John Ellis Family 1797-1935 tracing his mothers roots in 1936. According to a letter from the Crawford Historical Society he was conducting this research with plans to write the History of Hartstown. This research archive contains dozens of letters received by Miller most handwritten or typed by the author some transcribed by hand or typewriter by Miller. The letters Miller received were in response to his requests for information on the histories of a number of prominent Crawford County families including the following: Martzall St. Clair Henry Rankin Lee and the family of Benjamin F. Ellis. The letters in this archive show that many were pleased to help Miller conduct this research into Hartstown and West Fallowfield. Their letters contain pages of detailed information about the families their lineage and connections within Crawford County. Some respondents refer Miller to others who may be able to help further. Miller made an effort to get data from the Crawford Historical Society but he hit a dead end. He also made an effort to acquire census records from the National Archives in Washington but they were under national emergency protocol due to the war and were unable to help. As well as research on families Miller was interested in the history of Hartstown physicians schools the postal service and more. The archive contains statistics and other data compiled typed and collated by Miller about the postal service and postmasters of Hartstown family doctors the history of the school districts in the region the Scotch-Irish in Western PA and the Freewill Baptist Church in Adamsville It seems Miller compiled data for at least four chapters if not more of his planned book on Hartstowns history. Some of his typed pages include glued-in photographs and it appears a book was taking form. Unfortunately Miller did not publish the book. We know his wife Maude died in September 1942 and his work on this book seemed to dwindle after that. We also know he started spending more months of the year in California after her death which may also relate to why he abandoned this project. This archive is an outstanding source of primary source documents for any Pennsylvania-related collector or researcher. The work Miller has done to acquire the information and organize the documentation in typed draft pages is useful for any budding researcher. It would be pretty remarkable if a modern-day researcher chose to use Millers work and finish the book on Hartstown and West Fallowfield that he began. BIO NOTES ON MILO H. MILLER: Milo H. Amis and Amile were two medieval knights who were devoted friends and this is the story of their friendship which led Amile to slay his own children for the sake of his friend. Of course this supreme sacrifice meant that the children were not dead after all. Eventually the two knights were killed in the same battle and a miracle was added to the end of the story as although they were buried apart from each other the two coffins were found side by side the next morning. Wells praised the book and compared Morris to Malory admiring his style writing: "All the workmanship of the book is stout oaken stuff that must needs endure and preserve the memory of one of the stoutest cleanest lives that has been lived in these latter days." It was highly influential on all subsequent fantasy literature including inspiring latter fellow Oxford writers C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien and is among the most important proto-fantasy works ever penned. Recognizable influence abound such as "ancient tables of stone" "Gandolf" a "King Peter" and a marvelous white horse named "Silverfax" namesake if not exact of "Shadowfax." "Morris bought 'the whole making' of the Whatman paper on which this book is printed and used the balance for catalogues and prospectuses when he founded his own Kelmscott Press. This book so satisfied its author that he never reprinted the work at his Kelmscott Press. He declared it to be the best-looking book issued since the seventeenth century." Colbeck II p.582. Morris wrote to Georgie Burne-Jones on 16 November 1889: "I am so pleased with my book -- typography binding and I must say it literary matter -- that I am any day to be seen huggling it up and am become a spectacle to Gods and men because of it." LeMire p.134.<p>The story is set in Burgdale a small Germanic settlement in a valley at the foot of a mountain range and the neighboring woodlands pastures and dales. The area is inhabited by the interdependent Dalemen who are weavers smiths and traders the Woodlanders who are hunters and carpenters and the Shepherds. Their society is challenged by disruptions from the outside world in the form of the Sons of the Wolf the descendants of the Wolfings from the previous novel and the invading Dusky Men the Huns. The Sons of the Wolf driven from their original country by the Dusky Men continue to resist the invaders as a frontier force guarding their new home. The somewhat troubled integration of the Sons of the Wolf into the society they are protecting is told in the story of five lovers representing both peoples four of whom eventually marry.<p>Morris projected a sequel to THE ROOTS OF THE MOUNTAINS to be called THE STORY OF DESIDERIUS but he never completed it. One full-page and two three-quarter-page woodcut borders 8 and 8a along with numerous 10- 6- and 3-line initials all designed by Morris engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.<p>Tells the tale of Sidonia von Borcke the Pomeranian noblewoman who was tried and executed for witchcraft in 1620. Lady Wilde's translation was 1st published in 1849. Morris wrote that "Sidonia was based more or less on fact concerning the Witch Fever that afflicted Northern Europe during the latter half of the 15th and 1st half of the 16th centuries and was a great favorite with the more literary part of the pre-Raphaelite artists who include William Morris and Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones . D.G. Rossetti in particular was an enthusiastic admirer." In early 1892 Aubrey Beardsley produced a frontispiece drawing of Sidonia. Morris's rejection of the illustration caused great indignation in Beardsley. Forman pp. 168 & 220. The address was given where Morris first started making carpets and which was later used for the meetings of the Hammersmith Socialist Society. Mackail wrote the first biography of William Morris in 1899. Mackail was Morris's biographer and Edward Burne-Jones' son-in-law. The speech illustrates how Morris's politics and craftwork were inextricably linked. First published by The Doves Press in 1901. <p>Bound in tan colored boards with a white vellum spine printed in black the spine this copy has been repaired with tan paper over the original spine. All edges gilt. iv 69 70 imprint pp. <p>Printed in black and red throughout with the Golden type designed by Morris for his press with stanza numbers in red. Woodcut title within a floral border facing page with full woodcut floral page-border borders 10a and 10. Numerous other floral edge borders at stanza heads. Three 12-line woodcut initial and numerous 6-line initials all designed by Morris engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.<p>Maud was a great money-spinner for Morris as it was specially commissioned by Macmillan & Co. who bought all 500 copies. A tragic dramatic poem. The narrator being the unnamed lover of Maud. He kills her brother in a duel and must flee to France where he later learns that his love Maud has died probably of a broken heart. The distressed poet loses his sanity and imagines he is dead. In the last part his sanity is restored and he leaves to fight in the Crimean War.<p>First of the Kelmscott octavo books with a woodcut title. "Finished on the 11th day of August 1893." Peterson A17. Sparling 17. Tomkinson 112. <p>First state with uncorrected printer's errors in the text as follows: p. 16 last line "edge" for "head"; p. 19 line 4 "myself to myself" for "myself from myself"; p. 26 line 18 "where" for "were"; p. 69 line 1 "the" omitted before "war". These errors were reset during printing resulting in effect in two states of the book. <p>Elaborately bound by Leon Gruel stamp-signed in contemporary full brown leather with tooled title and leaf design to cover bearing the initials BG. Five raised bands.<p>Originally published in a limp vellum binding with yapped edges silk ties and gilt spine by J. and J. Leighton of London.<p>"The Parisian bookbinding workshop later known as Gruel & Engelmann was founded in 1811 by Isidore Desforges. Desforges took his son-in-law Paul Gruel into partnership in 1825. After Gruel's death in 1846 his widow Catherine successfully continued the business. . In 1850 she married Godefroy Engelmann the famous French printer who introduced lithography to France and invented the chromolithography process. After he joined the business the house changed its name to Gruel-Engelmann. After Engelmann's death Catherine was joined by her sons Leon Gruel overseeing the binding department and Edmond Engelmann directing the artistic aspects of printing. The fame and artistic excellence of the firm continued to grow. Leon Gruel expert binder and collector said 'Modern book binding has discovered nothing to equal the old designs and at best we can only copy' The Bookman 1900:11. He could produce binding in any style but he loved to replicate the old French masters' designs. His frequently-exhibited works brought him the highest awards." Free from the usual spotting and foxing of a book this age excepting a few small spots to boards. Offsetting to endpapers still a very nice copy with internal pages pristine clean white and crisp.
