Slight bit of edgewear with quite small loss of coated surface only at upper right and lower right corners not affecting image and touching upon outermost printed border at upper corner only. Printed entirely in black on heavy orange coated stock with lake and major thoroughfares accented in green. Titled simply "Chicago" at upper right with "Reference to Figures" in fine print below and two small columns below this itemizing "Depots" 22 stops and "Some of the Principal Hotels" 12 locations. "Steam Roads" and "Horse Roads" are also identified. Attractive if cryptic -- possibly printed by George F. Cram for one of the many editions of his "Universal Atlas" or "Unrivaled Atlas of the World" for the similarities are striking. unknown

American dramatist poet and novelist; books include "His Majesty Bunker Bean" "The Changeling" "Speed" "Pals First" "Lilia Chenoworth" and "The Book of Susan." Two items: First an ALS 1p 5½" X 8½" New Haven CT 1923 January 16. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Fine. "I enclose a first-draft sheet from the novel I am at present at work on" he writes. "As you see it is chaos. But you see the explanation is this -- I have my type-writer before me and a sheaf of paper beside it. On the paper I scribble & fiddle around in long-hand until I get a paragraph or a few sentences composed; then I copy these on the typewriter but usually making many additional changes as I do so. -- This merely to explain the extraordinary appearance of the sheet." Second is the aforementioned "first-draft sheet" an AMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. 1923 January 15. Near fine. Several meaty paragraphs penned in black ink in Dodd's miniscule but legible hand with a few crossouts some added text etc. At lower right he boldly inscribes it "Presented to / Prof. Albert Johannsen / by / Lee Wilson Dodd / Jan. 15 - 1923." A fun pair: an explanation by the author of his work method and an actual example of it. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

This interesting literary character founded the R.R. Bowker Company which still exists in 1872 co-founded "Library Journal" which also still exists in 1876 and acquired "Publishers' Weekly" you guessed it in 1879 -- among other lasting bookish and bibliographic endeavors. TLS 1p 5½" X 8½" New York NY 1923 January 17. Addressed to "R.U.J." editor Robert Underwood Johnson 1853-1937. Flowery tribute to his friend on the occasion of Johnson's seventieth birthday. In part: "Certainly your 70 years have been crowded and crowned with honors as Secretary of the American Copyright League whose work will I hope be crowned by our entrance into the International Copyright Union before we pass over to the majority; as Editor of the Century; as Scribe of the Immortals himself immortalized in contiguity; and finally as Ambassador from his beloved country to the land of his love." This last refers to Johnson's 1920-21 term as U.S. ambassador to Italy. An unusual item from one giant in the world of editing to another. unknown

Brief bizarre note concerning fellow dime novelist "Oil" or "Oll" Coomes 1858-1920: "Consult some cyclopedia or / undertaker. / T.C. Harbaugh / Oll Coomes was Killed last / summer." Coomes was one of the best known of the Texas dime novelists and was killed in a car crash in Iowa in 1920. Interesting snide and rather morbid! Accompanied by a 3" X 5½" printed pink promotional 4-page leaflet for Harbaugh's 1907 book "Lyrics of the Gray." Fine. Features blurbs by Mrs. J.E.B. Stuart LaSalle Corbell Mrs. General Pickett General Stephen D. Lee and others. unknown

New York: Advertising Agencies' Service Co New Yorkn.y. Folio 13½" X 17" folds down to 3¼" X 8½" housed in 8vo stiff green pictorial folder cover title: "Map of New York". Map very good folder near fine. 1" edge tear near the center of the top edge along one of the fold lines neatly archivally closed on verso; original as-issued folds present but otherwise not weakened. This delightful cartoonish map is printed in black on a thin translucent onion-skin paper and depicts a small area of Manhattan. Cartouche in shape of a hip flask! at lower right bears title cited above along with "April 30th 7 P.M. / Make your reservations now / no tickets sold at the door". Within this roughly-rectangular shaped decorative border runs the following one line to each side: "FOR ITS ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER / WHEN GOOD FELLOWS GET TOGETHER / WITH A STEIN ON THE TABLE / AND A GOOD SONG RINGING CLEAR." Above this border along the top edge runs the caption in mock Colonial style: "Plates Respektfully & Mechanickally ENGRAV'D by Ye HAGOPIAN PHOTO ENGRAVING CO. Inc. Artisans of Greate SKILL Expressly for Ye Occasion and for ye PLEASURE of Master WHITEHEAD in Especiall." Below this border along the bottom edge runs another mock Colonial caption: "Printed & Bound with CARE by Ye Craftsmen yclept: Advertising Agencies' Service Co. And PRESENTED Gratis albeit with GOOD GRACE to Ye MOST WORSHIPPFULL Company of Ye ART Directors." The map itself shows the several block radius around the intersection of Broadway and 30th Street with a number of buildings Hofbrau Lipsitz Bros. Cloaks & Suits Daly's Theatre John L's Place etc. depicted rather three-dimensionally. A Chinaman puffs a pipe atop a chop suey restaurant a horse-drawn carriage rolls down a street two cats face off atop a building and other bits of activity take place throughout. Commercial artist Walter Whitehead was born in 1874 and died in 1956 which helps date this undated piece -- presumably to later in his life perhaps his retirement. The Art Directors Club was founded in 1920 "for the progress of art in advertising and industry" according to their 1921 exhibition catalogue and both Otto Rebele and Whitehead were among its founding members. About Rebele little is known. He was born around 1878 and was both commercial artist and book illustrator. This scarce and delicate map is a rare survivor obviously printed in a small quantity for distribution to the membership of this specialized trade association. The Man with the Cast Iron Stomach" which opponents loved to jump on was an American wrestling star who debuted in 1953 held numerous world championships and reached the height of his popularity in the 1960s and '70s. IPS 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. ca. 1960. Very good. Minor tape stain at each corner. A handsome smiling bare-chested portrait of Gomez in his heyday inscribed in blue ballpoint at lower right "to Donald / Buena Suerte Good Luck / Pepper Gomez." Ink rather light thus contrast is fair only. Still an attractive piece and an uncommon autograph. unknown

This influential American journalist and author founded the first American quarterly "The American Review of History and Politics" in 1811; a long-time expatriate in Paris he began what is considered the first American literary salon. ALS 1p 5¼" X 6¼" Paris France November n.y. Very good. Would be fine but for removal of topmost edge perhaps ½ possibly to remove recipient's name -- though still complete with salutation intact. Gracious invitation to one of Walsh's famed salon evenings reading in part: ".our friend the Revd Mr. Baird expressed to me the wish. that I should make your acquaintance and that of Monsieur Nicolas the eminent theological writer. I have called on you but was not so fortunate as to find you at home. it will afford me much pleasure to see you & Mr. Nicholas at my apartment tomorrow evening. You will meet with some society which may prove agreeable to you & him." And by the way b.y.o.b. "Revd. Mr. Baird" was likely one of the famous American Presbyterian clergymen Robert or one of his sons Charles Washington or Henry Martyn. Bold and attractive. unknown

Confidant of Missouri pioneer Jonathan Bryan 1759-1846 of the noted St. Charles family whose relatives included their neighbor Daniel Boone. DS 1p 7½" X 12" St. Charles County MO 1847 February 2. Near fine. Acknowledgment that Tuter who signs himself as "Administrator of the Estate of Johnathan Bryan" has had a writ of replevin made out and issued to the St. Charles sheriff Edward C. Cunningham 1809-65 for delivery to an unnamed offender. The writ seeks to recover the following property apparently wrongfully taken from Jonathan Bryan's estate: "one negro man a Slave named Heney one Two horse waggon and one pair of Briches Two Black horses one Lorrel horse with bold face one walnut Cupboard one clock one Bureau one bedstead and bedding one walnut Table one Trunk one Bible." In other words everything but the kitchen sink. Signed at the conclusion by Tater in his definitely untutored hand. Tales of slaves are found in the Bryan family lore such as: "Mrs. Jonathan Bryan a kinswoman of Daniel Boone was working in her yard with a slave woman when a boy slave screamed. She saw an Indian warrior heading for them with a tomahawk in one hand and a gun in the other. The women ran for the house. Just as they were slamming the door they caught the warrior's head and right arm between the door and facing. The slave woman grabbed the hatchet from his hand and killed him with a sharp blow. The women had barely recovered from their fright when the boy shouted again." Could the slave boy in this old family legend by none less than the "Slave named Heney" whose return is demanded in this replevin suit Quite unusual slavery item with an intriguing history. unknown

This Canadian Native American wrestlers known as "Marvelous Mohawk" was one of the greatest box office attractions of the early days of televised wrestling; he won the best-of-three-falls AWA World title in 1950 but had it taken away three days later in a controversial incident during a match with Gorgeous George; he died at age 41 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound an apparent suicide. IPS magazine stock 7" X 10" n.p. n.y. ca. 1960. Very good. Tape stains along some edges but not affecting image or signature. Full-length publicity portrait of Eagle in Indian costume and full headdress wielding a tomahawk. Page 14 from some unknown wrestling yearbook or program featuring Eagle's likeness image area 5¼" X 7" and the printed word "Autograph" with a printed line alongside it for signing -- Eagle inscribes it boldly in blue ballpoint: "Good Hunting -- Chief Don Eagle." Below this is a small printed caption reading: "No Indian since Geronimo has caused as much comment as Don Eagle. A Canadian Don is married weighs 218 pounds stands 6'1" and took a fling into boxing before his wrestling career. During the Summer months the Eagle maintains a summer camp at Cayawaga Canada." Despite flaw a quite attractive and scarce piece. unknown

This American playwright won the 1940 Pulitzer Prize for "The Time of Your Life." Signed Postal Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled at Fresno California on August 31 1972. Near fine. Single 8-cent "Sidney Lanier American Poet" stamp at upper right. NOT a First Day Cover -- but an imaginative collector had this cover cancelled on the day of Saroyan's 1908 birth -- August 31 -- in the city of his birth Fresno which is also where he died. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address -- but Saroyan's bold and huge 5½"! signature in black fineline fills the "sweet spot." For some reason Saroyan signs this piece on the verso two more times -- on the first in black ballpoint his pen skips badly so he signs a second time in bright pink marker. Small portion of original transmittal envelope present. unknown

This German violinist played with the prestigious Frankfurt Quartet and played the premiere performance of the Brahms concerto in New York and Paris. AMuQS 1p heavy stock 3¼" X 2½" n.p. Chicago 1905 December 16. Very good. Slightest of age toning; mounting traces on verso. On a 3¼" X 1" slip neatly tipped to the center of this heavy card Heerman neatly and boldly writes out several measures of intricate music identifying it above as "Rondo Beethoven" it's from the third movement of Beethoven's violin concerto. On the heavy stock card above this slip he adds "To Miss F. Maryanna Neumann" and below the slip he writes "Remembrance of 16 Dec. 1905 / Hugo Heermann." Heerman taught in Chicago from 1906 to 1909 so this was written on the eve of his residency there. Quite attractive and very uncommon. unknown

Prolific Missouri author of historical romances such as "Fran" "Lahoma" "Wolves of Holland" and "Stork's Nest." Two items: First a TNS 1p 8½" X 11" Plattsburg MO 1923 January 22. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Near fine. Nice note to an admirer: "Yours. finds me in my winter home far from my library so I cannot send the MS.-page of any published novel. However I inclose a page from my last book not as yet announced named but only tentatively 'Tandy Sees the World.' . The MS. notes for revision are in shorthand of my devising." Bold full signature. Second is the aforementioned page a TMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Very good. On thin onion-skin type paper typed in purple ink this nice double-spaced typescript opens with characteristic Ellis prose: "The younger man stared at him perplexedly puzzled less by the dancing eyes which seemed scintillating with a rush of sparks blown in a wind than by the enigmatic utterances of the kindly mouth." Crossouts additions and deletions penned throughout including several lines added to the verso of the leaf. In the left margin vertically he writes "First draft of novel of 1922-1923 / J. Breckenridge Ellis / All rights reserved." Ellis does not seem to have published a book by this title but whether this title was published under another title warrants further research. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. A handsome pair. unknown

Most unusual oversize IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" St. Charles IL 1960 October 14. Near full-length side-by-side shot depicting Gilbert and Goelz in wrestling trunks against a white background each taking off their coat as if entering the ring. Gilbert at left inscribes boldly to the right of his legs in red ballpoint: "To Donald M. Burnell / A true and wonderful / Wrestling fan Your friend / in Sports always / Johnny Gilbert / Oct 14 - 1960 / St. Charles Livestock Center / St. Charles Illiones." sic Goelz at right inscribes boldly at upper right in blue ballpoint: "To a wrestler's best friend / Donald M. Burnell / Best of Luck and of everything / Your friend always / Billy Goelz / Fox Lake wrestler / Oct. 14 1960 / St. Charles Livestock / Center / St. Charles Ill." This handsome and most unusual item was likely created for some cryptic promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. Choice vintage piece from the "Golden Age of Wrestling" -- likely one of a kind in this large format. Superb for display. unknown

This popular and prolific American novelist often penned such inspirational fiction for young adults as "The Singular Miss Smith" "Transfiguration of Miss Philura" and "The Resurrection of Miss Cynthia." Two items: First an ALS 1p 6" X 7" Staten Island New York Kingsley Avenue no less! 1923 February 27. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Fine. Charming note trying to oblige an admirer: "Somewhere in the attic are more respectable 'scraps' of manuscript than the enclosed; but at present I am not able to endure the winter rigors of that repository of 'literary remains.' This is a rejected beginning of the thirteenth chapter of the book I am now writing: 'The Life of Henry Fowle Durant' Founder of Wellesley College. I am sorry I saw fit to crumple it before dropping it into the waste basket." Second the aforementioned Autograph Manuscript Signed 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Very good. Despite Kingsley's claim of having crumpled it this thin onionskin-type paper bears almost no evidence of having been so abused. Handsomely and closed penned in black fountain pen and bearing a number of crossouts additions and deletions this is a very full page 89 clearly marked chapter "XIII" and opens: "In her singularly lucid and beautiful 'Interpretation of the Genius of Henry Fowle Durant' Anne Eugenia Morgan writes of him thus: 'Henry Fowle Durant came to provide a transition in our human course -- a beautiful curve for a staircase that leads up up into the clearing mysteries of the bow of light the bow of higher truth luminous in our time." Most unusual to find earlier versions of published works such as this. Kingsley's "Life of Henry Fowle Durant" was published the following year in New York by Century Company. This fascinating pair is accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

This American opera coloratura soprano's debut in 1926 at age 19 made her the youngest prima donna to premiere at the Metropolitan Opera as gilda in Verdi's "Rigoletto" and briefly made her the toast of the town -- heard on the radio and seen and heard in some of the first short sound films; but her decline was just as meteoric as her rise and her career fizzled and sputtered afterward. Titled "for Billy Doris Queenie Donna June and John" this is an original probably one-of-a-kind quatrain written especially for a small class of disabled school children thanking them in verse: "Thank you for your message and / The thank-you picture made by hand / Thank you each and every one -- / I hope you have a lot of fun." Somewhat tremulous but bold easily legible and attractive. A charming example of the vintage versifier's graciousness. unknown

This English author wrote poetry "The Influence of Nature and Poetry on National Spirit" 1814 and a wide variety of nonfiction such as "The Book of the Seasons" 1831 "The Popular History of Priestcraft" 1833 bestseller "The Student Life of Germany" 1841 and "The History of the Super-natural in all Ages and Nations" 1863; with his wife the noted poet and translator Mary Bothem they co-authored "The Literature and Romance of Northern Europe" 1852 and "Ruined Abbeys and Castles of Great Britain" 1864; in 1852 he spent two years in the Australian goldfields with his sons producing "A Boy's Adventures in the Wilds of Australia" 1854 and two other volumes. ALS 3pp 4½" X 7" Highgate England 1863 March 20. Addressed to C. Bathurst Woodman grandson of Charles Bathurst apprentice and later publisher with Benjamin Motte Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope's publisher. Near fine. Intriguingly cryptic contents about a scroll of some sort: "It was very thoughtful of you to mention Whittington's tome but I was already aware of it not being the original one. With respect to Mr Hume and the scroll I am sorry that you had not time to home with him when he would be in or he studies it seems at University College and would be about in the day. I am sure he will have much pleasure any time that you are in Town in showing the scroll to you but I very much doubt whether he would sell it. At all events your purpose if you become the purchase of restoring it to the is very honorable to you." Interesting and worthy of further research. unknown

Bit of sporadic soiling but overall remarkably clean and attractive -- given it's printed on a thin tissue paper a rare survivor. Timetable "No. 4" which "Takes Effect Sunday May 7th 1882 at 12 o'clock Noon" and is meant "For the Government and Information of Employes only" containing two columns headed "Trains Going West" and "Trains Going East" showing all stops for both freight and passenger trains between Milwaukee and Madison Wisconsin. Signed in large type at the bottom by J.D. Layng as General Superintendent C.A. Swineford as Superintendent and Wm. F. Fitch as Assistant Superintendent. Rare to find in ANY condition given its inherent fragility much less this attractive condition. Newly and archivally framed under UV-filtering glass with a single archival cream matte and 3/4" thick dark wood and antiqued gold frame overall dimensions 18" X 12½" -- giving it a superb period feel. unknown

Superb glossy IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" n.p. Chicago IL 1958 February 20. Near fine. Attractive head-and-bare-shoulders closeup of the singing sensation in barely-visible sequined top gazing upward soulfully. She inscribes the upper right area large and bold in black ink "To / Donald M. Burnell: / Best Wishes / & / Good Luck / Jodie / Sands / 2/20/58." This lovely and quite unusual item was likely created for some now-forgotten promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. Choice vintage piece from the height of her fame -- likely one of a kind in this large format. Uncommon thus. Superb for display. unknown

At the top beneath the boldface title given above is "Executive Department" headed by soon-to-be Union general Nathaniel P. Banks and listing his lieutenant governor cabinet members and councillors. Next comes "Senators" listing all state senators by county and city. Finally comprising two-thirds of the broadside is "Representatives" a county-by-county directory of state representatives. A "Special Notice to the Members of the Senate and House" at the bottom makes it clear that this broadside was intended for public display in the state capitol building. A fascinating and attractive piece. unknown
