‎This business executive took over the reins of the Maytag Company as president after the last actual Maytag family member stepped down and upon the death of grandson Fred Maytag II who became president at age 29 in 1940 Umbreit became chairman of the board and chief executive officer. TNS 1p 7" X 10½" Newton IA 1960 March 28. Addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Bruno J. Gianetti. Fine. On letterhead of "The Maytag Company" Umbreit complies with a request for a photograph signing handsomely in full in blue ink. Also present is the aforementioned photograph an IPS 8" X 10" n.p. 1960 March 28. Glossy head-and-shoulders informal portrait of Umbreit in suit and tie superbly signed and inscribed in white ink in a dark portion at lower right making for excellent contrast: "To George Gianetti / Best wishes for a great / future. / George Umbreit / President The Maytag Company / 3-28-1960." ‎This English-born American bookseller and publisher was controversial during the American Revolution for his suspected Tory sympathies especially since he published the "New York Gazetteer" even returning to England briefly early during the war; but it's believed he was actually a spy for the Americans and smuggled messages to General Washington printed on thin paper bound into the covers of books. ADS 2pp separate leaves 7 3/4" X 6" and 7 3/4" X 7½" New York NY 1789 September 10-11. Very good. Mild bit of age toning slight bit of soiling. First leaf in Rivington's hand records a real estate transaction verbatim with line breaks included: "James Rivington & wife / to / Benj: Moore / deed & Release Sept: 10 & 11 1789. / Recd. -- Lib:45. p529 -- & Lib:46. p221. -- / 16 ac. 2 roads & 32 paas.-- Between Green- / -wich Road & the River -- South of / Mary Clarke's land. --" The second leaf in another and neater hand notes: "Abstract of Title to two Lots of Ground on the North-Easterly side of Twenty first Street in the 12th Ward of the City of New York distinguished on the plot beneath by the numbers 1 & 2." Below this is a well-drafted plat map showing land parcels between "9th Av." at left "8th Ave." at right "22d St" at top and "21. St." at bottom -- with the two lots in question here neatly marked "1" and "2" in the lower right area of this block. The purchaser here was Bishop BENJAMIN MOORE 1748-1816 the second bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and president of Columbia College -- best remembered as the father of Clement C. Moore 1779-1863 the scholar who penned the immortal poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" in 1823. Bishop Moore and his son owned a number of properties in this area mostly in the Chelsea Historic District slightly north of the two lots he purchased from Rivington. A scarce document with interesting connections. Accompanied by a superb and itself scarce vintage steel-engraved portrait heavy stock 7" X 10½" n.p. n.y. mid-19th century. Fine. A bold and handsome head-and-shoulders portrait of Rivington gazing intently at the viewer looking rather like Washington himself engraved by A.H. Ritchie. unknown‎

Lathers" -- surely Richard Lathers 1821-1903 noted Charleston and later New York merchant banker diplomat and insurance and railroad executive. On stationery bearing a blind-embossed heading of "Tremont House / Boston" Boston's famous and pioneering hotel Colt pens a friend in his sloppy scrawl. ‎Canada. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1905. Non-Book. On offer are two autographed letters dated 1905 written and signed by Pitt Kennedy assistant to Sir Frederick Pollock 3rd Baronet 1845-1937. The two autographed letters written to Edward Blake 1833-1912 are requesting an appointment with Sir Frederick Pollock on his visit to Canada to discuss his concept for an Imperial “Intelligence” Department and a permanent Imperial Commission. BIO NOTES: Mr. Pitt Kennedy The Honorary Secretary had visited Canada and Advocated proposals for the organisation of the Empire. The proposals in brief were the establishment of an Advisory Council a Secretarial Office afterwards described as an Imperial “Intelligence” Department and a permanent Imperial Commission. Twelve month’s investigation in which Australasia Canada South Africa and other overseas parts of the Empire were included. Sir Frederick Pollock the eminent jurist and imperialist. An authority on legal and political science in all its branches. He is the author of a number of works which are recognized by lawyers and scholars generally to be of the greatest value. Also known for his lifelong correspondence with US Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. Dominick Edward Blake was a lawyer and politician. Known as Edward Blake was the second Premier of Ontario Canada from 1871 to 1872 and leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 1880 to 1887. To view Blake strictly as a politician does him injustice. His clearest victories and greatest impact occurred elsewhere: in the shaping of his party and in the imprint of his mind on equity and constitutional law. During his career he shaped much law as a premier as a minister of justice as a leading figure in parliamentary opposition and especially as a lawyer in the courts. On offer is a newsy letter with excellent Canadian content written and signed by notable Canadian William Saunders 1836-1914 and written to one H. A. Kennedy. Dated April 24 1910 on letterhead of Central Experimental Farm Ottawa. The letter deals with Kennedy's recent visit to Saunders and talks about Kennedy's family in particular Kennedy's son. Saunders is suggesting the son attend the Forestry Program at University of Toronto and Saunders has already talked to them. BIO NOTES: William Saunders was a Canadian pharmacist scientist civil servant and author. Saunders emigrated to Upper Canada in 1848 settling in London. He apprenticed to a local druggist and opened his own pharmacy in 1855. In 1862 he helped found the Entomological Society of Canada. He was a founding member of the Canadian Pharmaceutical Society and served as its president. He also helped establish the Ontario College of Pharmacy. He served as president of the American Pharmaceutical Association the Entomological Society 1875–1886 and the Fruit Growers’ Association of Ontario 1882–1886. In 1876 he was made a director of the Huron and Erie Savings and Loan Society and served as its president from 1879 to 1887. In 1886 he was made the founding director of the Dominion Experimental Farms system. He retired in 1911. He was created a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1905. ‎1937 Funny Toronto Star Journalist Letter Humourously Declining to Write a Piece on Authorship‎

‎Toronto Ontario Canada. Good with no dust jacket. 1937. Non-Book. On offer is a humorous letter written by Frederick G. Griffin 1889-1946 and sent to Howard Angus Kennedy 1861-1938. The typed letter is signed by Griffin. Dated Dec. 10 1937 on the Toronto Star Editorial Dept. Letterhead Griffin writes to Howard Angus Kennedy in Montreal. In his letter Griffin humorously declines to write a piece on authorship for "The Canadian Author". An excerpt: ".Fact is being an alleged author as a sort of by-product to twenty-odd years of newspapering I do not take authorship very seriously and I have not a word that I could think of writing that would chasten help warn advise amuse or irritate a single Canadian author." This letter is a fun hat-tip to the history of Canadian newspaper publishing with a distinctly Toronto vibe that would be an asset to any Canadiana collector. BIO NOTES: Frederick G. Griffin was a well respected Toronto-based journalist and war correspondent during WW2. He was known as a popular front-page feature writer in Canada writing for the Toronto Star. Howard Angus Kennedy was a correspondent of The Montreal Daily Witness and New York Herald covering the Riel Rebellion in 1885. During the war Mr. Kennedy was editor and writer for the economics commission at Ottawa and organizer of the publishing department of the Military Hospital Commission and the Soldiers Civil Re-establishment Department. Mr. Kennedy was a charter member of the Canadian Authors" Association formed in 1921 and became its national secretary in 1929 holding that office to his death in addition to heading the Montreal branch for a number of years. This letter is one page. ‎1965 French Canadian Manuscript Letter Discussing Anglo-Canadian Historical Nonfiction from Séraphin Marion‎

On offer is a letter handwritten and signed from French Canadian professor historian and literary critic Séraphin Marion 1896-1983 to Canadian historian writer and editor William Stewart Wallace 1884-1970. This three page long manuscript letter contains outstanding content. Marion - who is obviously hugely respectful of Wallace - is contacting him to ask him for his elaboration and to understand the perspective of a comment Wallace made in one of the paragraphs of his 1927 book The Growth of Canadian National Feeling. Marion opens the letter by updating Wallace on his own situation. He was recently ill but is now on the mend. English translation of an excerpt follows: ". I give a few lectures all around the country and I write articles.I was also elected as a member of the Education of the French Canada of Ontario in 1961 two years as a member of the executive council. They have asked me to draft or write a small study on the Federal District and Franco-Ontarians." Translated from French. Marion then discusses his reading of Anglo-Canadian historical works from his perspective as a French Canadian. English translation of an excerpt follows: ".I tasked myself with reading a great number of works/drafts from Anglo Canadians on the history of Canada.I have read almost all of the books from Lower Brown Burt Brebner Morton Underhill Massey Trotter Creighton Mc Innis Stanley Ryerson Dafoe Chester Martin etc. – needless to say yours are the best my dear Wallace." Translated from French. Marion then engages Wallace in a discussion about his book The Growth of Canadian National Feeling. Marion will include thoughts from this book in his talk to Educational Association the following week. English translation of an excerpt follows: ".I have suddenly remembered.a very important paragraph from Wallace's book.I quickly without delay immersed myself in the text.I would like you to give an element of justice and to make an issue- after almost 40 years." Translated from French. This letter is a very interesting and important historical letter on the Francophones outside of Quebec. BIO NOTES: Séraphin Marion was a Canadian professor historian and literary critic. He was born in Ottawa on November 25 1896. He was a vocal advocate of francophone rights outside Quebec. Marion graduated from the University of Ottawa with a BA in 1918 and MA in 1922. After receiving his doctorate from the Université de Paris he taught French at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston Ontario 1920-1923. From 1926 to 1954 he taught French and French-Canadian literature at the University of Ottawa later being named professor emeritus. He authored 20 studies including a nine-volume collection entitled Les Lettres canadiennes d’autrefois published between 1939 and 1958. He served as head translator and later as director of historical publications at the Public Archives of Canada 1923-1953. He was a member of the Royal Society of Canada 1934 the Académie canadienne-française and the Société des Dix 1962. Séraphin Marion died in Ottawa on November 29 1983. The Séraphin Marion primary school in Ottawa Ontario and Séraphin Marion street on the University of Ottawa campus were named in his honour. The Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal awards the Prix Séraphin-Marion annually. Source: Wikipedia. W. ‎1901 Fascinating Canadiana Letter about the Death of a Scottish Immigrant to His Son in Indian Head Northwest Territories‎

‎Northwest Territories Alberta Canada. Good with no dust jacket. 1901. Non-Book. On offer is a fascinating letter relating to the death of an early Scottish immigrant to Canada Mr. Angus Fraser. The letter written by William G. Hutchinson a lawyer from Lamerton Alberta to John Angus Fraser the deceased man's son who is residing in Indian Hat Northwest Territories. Dated February 8 1901 this letter touches on some interesting topics including Fraser's "half breed" half French "friend" to whom he left his estate the contents of his estate and references his family still in Scotland. A very interesting legal document that provides strings for a Canadian researcher to pull to learn more about social cultural and mobility norms of the time and place. The letter reads: "Mr John Angus Fraser - Indian Head NWT.In answer to yours of 28th ulto I beg to say that Mr. Angus Fraser died at his residence Spring Hill Ranch about 16 miles from here sometime in the beginning of last November. I wrote his Sister resided near Dundee in Scotland telling her of his death a few days after it occurred. I also informed her that by a will made shortly before he died he had left everything to one Batisse Anasse a French half-breed with whom he had been on terms of friendship for many years. Mr. E Taylor Mr B. Coy Winnipeg was administrator of the Estate. He would be able to give you all particulars if you write him. I may mention that the Estate constituted of about 40 head of cattle 2 horses implements etc. Of the ranch. I do not know if the Estate has been administered or not yet.Will G. Hutchinson PM Lamerton Alta". BIO NOTES: John Angus Fraser 1870- was born in Scotland and came to Canada in 1890. He settled in the Indian Head area of the Territories and worked as a labourer. He married Clarissa Aline Thompson originally from Ontario Canada and they had at least two children. His father Angus lived in Alberta a few miles from Lamerton. Lamerton began as a country trading post the original Buffalo Lake Trading Post where furs were bought and supplies sold by Fletcher Bredin in the late 1800's. In 1893 he opened the post office in his store and renamed the post Lamerton. After the turn of the century it grew into a village. The letter is handwritten by Hutchinson on Buffalo Lake Trading Co. On offer is a fascinating Canadiana manuscript document which includes the signatures of two prominent historical Canadian figures being James Stewart 1765-1830 and General Sir James Kempt c1765-1854. Front page is the sworn statement of James Stewart regarding Gillam Pailer witnessing a document. It is signed and dated in Halifax Nova Scotia on Aug 12 1823. It reads: "Personally appeared this Twelth day of August in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Three before me the Honourable James Stewart One of the Judges of His Majesty's Supreme Court for the Province of Nova Scotia Gillam Pailer whose name is subscribed to the foregoing instrument and being by me duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God made Oath and said that he was personally present and Witnessed the execution of the foregoing instrument by James Stewart whose name is subscribed as "Attorney in fact for the said Colonel Stewart". Given under my hand at Halifax in the Province of Nova Scotia the day and year first above written. signed Gillam Pailer J. Stewart"Page two is the confirmation of James Stewart being subscribed to a certificate as is one of the judges in Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. Confirmation by James Kempt with seal and signed by him at the top Signed at the bottom by William Hill Provincial Secretary's Office to the Magistrates of Halifax. This is an important piece the administrative history of the province of Nova Scotia. BIO NOTES: James Stewart was an American-born lawyer judge and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Halifax County in the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia from 1798 to 1799. His name also appears as James Stuart. He was a member of the North British Society. Stewart came to Halifax with his father around 1780. He was educated in Halifax and at University of Edinburgh. In 1790 he married Elizabeth the daughter of John Halliburton a member of the Nova Scotia Council. Stewart was elected to the assembly in a 1798 by-election held following the death of Jonathan Sterns. In May 1798 he was named solicitor general. He became a justice in the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in 1815. Sir James Kempt was the Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia 1820-1828 and worked as the Administrator of the Government of Canada from 1828-1830. 2pp. Manuscript size each page 7-7/8 x 12-3/4 inches. ‎Marly de Roi France. Good with no dust jacket. 1867. Non-Book. On offer is a letter which was written and signed by the French dramatist Victorien Sardou 1831-1908. The letter is written to an unknown recipient. It is undated but assumed to be circa 1867. Blind embossed are the letters VS and Marly de Roi where Sardou lived this is the same place as Alexandre Dumas. The letter reads: "I thank you very much my dear neighbour I am going to take advantage of your advice. I have not answered earlier because Madame Sardou is quite unwell and for 48 hours I have not had time to think of anything other than her illness. Please accept my dear neighbour for both you and Madame de Breval my most attentive regards signed Victorien Sardou." BIO NOTES: Sardou married his benefactress Mlle Helene de Brécourt in 1858 but eight years later 1866 he became a widower. Victorien Sardou was a French dramatist. He is best remembered today for his development along with Eugène Scribe of the well-made play. He also wrote several plays that were made into popular 19th-century operas such as La Tosca 1887 on which Giacomo Puccini's opera Tosca 1900 is based and Fedora by Umberto Giordano a work that popularized the fedora hat as well. The signature is mounted on a larger sheet and the sheet measures 3-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches. Undated. Overall G.BIO NOTES: Thomas Edward was a Scottish naturalist born in Gosport. He was trained as a shoemaker and eventually settled in Banff where he devoted his leisure to the study of animal nature and collected numerous specimens of animals which he stuffed and exhibited but with pecuniary loss; the Queen's attention being called to his case she settled on him an annual pension of £50 while the citizens of Aberdeen presented him in March 1877 with a gift of 130 sovereigns £130.1 The story of his life and work was recorded in Life of a Scotch Naturalist Thomas Edward associate of the Linnean Society written by Samuel Smiles illustrated by George Reid and published by John Murray in 1876 nine editions were published between 1876 and 1889. ‎1888 Canadian-Themed Manuscript Letter by French Canadian Novelist and Historian Joseph-Etienne-Eugene Marmette‎

‎Canada. Fair with no dust jacket. 1888. Non-Book. On offer is a swell piece of French Canadiana being a letter with distinctly Canadian content written by Canadian novelist and historian Joseph-Etienne-Eugene Marmette 1844-1895. At the time of this letter's writing Marmett was working as the deputy director at the Archives of Canada. Addressed on Archives Branch Ottawa letterhead beside an Agriculture Canada seal Marmette dates his letter June 27 1888. In his letter addressed to an anonymous "Monsieur" Marmette writes that he is replying to the gentleman's letter of May 25. The letter of May 25 had been inaccurately addressed and had only reached Marmette recently. The person to whom Marmette is responding seems to have been interested in Hertel's Deerfield expedition and Marmette informs him of his colleague's pamphlet discussing this historical moment. Marmette explains that the pamphlet is dated 1886 and the articles within it appeared in "La Revue Canadienne". Marmettegoes on to thank the recipient for his catalogue and inform him that he gave it to the Department of Canadian Archives. Marmette closes his letter by apologizing for his inability to attend an upcoming event explaining that he has recently returned from a year in Europe and his work has piled up! While small in size this letter is an absolute Canadiana gem. BIO NOTES: Joseph-Etienne-Eugene Marmett is the son of Joseph Marmet doctor and Élisa Taché daughter of Étienne-Paschal Taché. Marmette did his classical studies at the Petit Séminaire de Québec from 1857 to 1864. He then studied at Regiopolis College in Kingston from 1864 to 1865 then he undertook law studies at Laval University in 1865. However he did not complete this course. In 1867 Marmette was hired as a clerk in the Treasury Office of the province of Quebec. In 1882 he became a civil servant for the federal government in Ottawa. His work led him to make several trips to Europe since he was first a special immigration agent in France and Switzerland then deputy director of the Archives of Canada. While he held this last position Marmette was notably responsible for transcribing archives relating to the history of Canada into French repositories. He was also responsible in 1886 for the library of the Canadian pavilion at the Colonial Exhibition in London. Marmette is best known as a novelist and essayist. The historical novel is the literary genre that mainly marks his writings. The author published his first novel Charles et Éva in the form of a serial in La Revue canadienne in 1866 and 1867. He used this model for two other novels in L'Opinion publique. He participated in the founding of the Royal Society of Canada in 1882 where he occupied the fifteenth seat in Section I French-language literature history and archeology. ‎England. Good with no dust jacket. 1893. Non-Book. On offer is a handwritten and signed letter from Arthur Charles Hamilton-Gordon 1st Baron Stanmore 1829-1912 marked Private Confidential. Dated 7 Sloane Gardens 30 June 1893 this letter was written to someone who will write a biography of Hamilton-Gordon. In it he is giving suggestions and guidelines. The Baron Stanmore notes his "29 years of Colonial government and close personal friendship with Mr. Gladstone." He then notes his desire that his peerage be "for public service in the Colonies" and not because of friendship. The person to whom the letter was being sent is not given however it is considered to have been sent to The Times of London as in the letter Gordon is asking that the forthcoming announcement of his peerage be framed in a particular way. And indeed the announcement of his peerage in The Times was very nearly identical to the request that Gordon is making in his letter which reads as follows: “ . . . . Sir Arthur Gordon has enjoyed a long and close personal friendship with Mr. Gladstone but he has taken no active part in politics since returning from Ceylon. He is a Liberal but his Liberalism is understood to be of that type which prevailed in the House of Commons when he was himself a member of it some 35 years ago and not that of the Newcastle programme. ” -- “Court Circular ” The Times 3 July 1893 p. 10. BIO NOTES: Arthur Charles Hamilton-Gordon 1st Baron Stanmore 1829-1912 British Liberal Party politician and colonial administrator. Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick. The youngest son of George Hamilton-Gordon 4th Earl of Aberdeen he was educated privately and then at Trinity College Cambridge where he was President of the Cambridge Union Society in 1849. After graduating in 1851 he worked as Assistant Private Secretary to the British Prime Minister his father between 1852 and 1855 and was a Member of Parliament MP for Beverley from 1854 to 1857 before holding a number of colonial governorships: Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick 1861-1866 securing New Brunswick's assent to Canadian Confederation; Governor of Trinidad 1866-1870; 11th Governor of Mauritius 21 Feb 1871 - 18 August 1874; Governor of Fiji from 1875 to 1880; Governor of New Zealand 29 November 1880 - 24 June 1882; Governor of Ceylon 1883-1890. On offer is a fascinating little piece of Canadiana ephemera being a torn page from Carl Fellman Schaefer's 1903-1995 Income Tax statement from 1981. The writing is in his hand and with signatureBIO NOTES: Carl Schaefer a Canadian regionalist artist and teacher painted scenes of rural southern Ontario. The farm environment of Grey County and his personal relationship to the land inspired his best work. Schaefer studied at the Ontario College of Art from 1921 under the Group of Seven painters Arthur Lismer and J. E. H. MacDonald. He later free-lanced as a commercial artist. In 1930 Schaefer began teaching at the Central Technical School in Toronto. During the Depression Schaefer returned with his family on his holidays to Hanover. From 1948 to 1970 he taught at OCA Ontario College of Art. In 1937 stimulated by an interest in drawing Schaefer turned to watercolour a medium that had the added advantages of speed immediacy and low cost. From 1943-46 Schaefer worked as an official war artist with the RCAF Royal Canadian Air Force. This experience darkened his vision but by the 1950s he was again painting in a broad lyrical spirit in the countryside around Hanover and in neighbouring Wellington and Waterloo counties. His work is held in the collections of the Canadian War Museum the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. During his lifetime Schaefer was the recipient of numerous awards and honours. On offer is an 1868 legal manuscript document relating to the appointment of Power of Attorney for the recently widowed New Brunswick Canada resident Ms. Charlotte LeBaron Hazen Smith 1809-1893. Charlotte Smith widow of Henry Bowyer Smith 1800-1868 appoints Herries Farquhar & Co. Sir Walter Rockcliff Farquhar 1810-1900 and others as Power of Attorney. Smith signs the document beside an affixed seal. There is a handwritten note by New Brunswick lawyer judge and politician William B. Kinnear who died about a month later. Kinnear notarizes the document writing that he is "a Public Notary in and for the Province of New Brunswick by lawful authority.do hereby certify that I was present and did see Charlotte LeBaron Smith sign seal and deliver the aforgoing instrument." The primary focus of the contract is dealing with a policy from The Standard Life Assurance Company of Edinburgh. Quite interesting early Canadian legal document from a well to do family in New Brunswick. BIO NOTES: Charlotte LeBaron Hazen was the widow of Henry Bowyer Smith Collector of Customs St. John New Brunswick who was the son of Charles Douglass Smith the colonial governor and administrator. They had one child Sarah Elizabeth Smith 1829-1884 who married. Rev. Charles Lee 1826- 1873. ‎New York. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1877. Non-Book. On offer is a detailed letter written and signed by Edward Abiel Washburn 1819-1881. Washburn writes from New York to "My dear George Hubert ". His letter includes four chatty pages. It seems Hubert has sent Washburn some lyrics for a hymn for which Washburn is grateful. Throughout the chatty letter Washburn touches on receiving the "pastoral lyrics" for his hymns his travels his faith gossip about community members the "Catholic spirit" and closes with encouragement for his letter's recipient stating: ".when 'my stammering tongue' is dumb I hope young and genius Generous voices like yours will speak more clearly. Yours Cordially EA Washburn". This letter is a fascinating insight into the brilliant brain of Washburn. BIO NOTES: Edward Abiel Washburn was a Hymn writer rector professor. After Harvard Washburn studied theology at Andover and New Haven and entered the Congregational ministry. In 1844 having been ordained in the Protestant Episcopal Church he became Rector of St. Paul’s Newburyport Massachusetts where he stayed until 1851. He spent 1851-52 visiting Egypt Palestine India and China. He then served as Rector of St. John’s Hartford Connecticut 1853-62 ; Professor Church Polity at the Berkeley Divinity School Middletown Connecticut; Rector of St. Mark’s Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1862-65 ; and Rector of Calvary Church New York 1865-81. In 1871 Washburn was a delegate to the Evangelical Alliance and in 1872 he visited Spain with Professor C. M. Butler. In 1873 he attended sessions of the Evangelical Alliance in New York and in 1879 visited Basel Switzerland. In the summer of 1880 he traveled on horseback in Virginia and North Carolina. The first piece in this collection is the signature of Victor Emmanuel II clipped from a document. Undated c.1867. This collection also includes five other pieces involving Dr. Leone Levi visit to Italy in 1867. These are: a letter from the Minister of Agriculture dated 2nd Oct. 1867; a program of the musical 'Della guardia Nazionale al Pranzo di S. M. I1 Re nel R. BIO NOTES: Victor Emanuel II Vittorio Emanuele Maria Alberto Eugenio Ferdinando Tommaso 1820-1878 King of Sardinia from 1849 until on 17 March 1861 he assumed the title King of Italy to become the first king of United Italy since the 6th century a title he held until his death in 1878. The Italians gave him the epithet Father of the Homeland Padre de/la Patria. Dr. Leone Levi was professor of Commercial Law in King's College London. Leone Levi was an English jurist and statistician. Born to a Jewish family in Ancona Italy he worked in commerce there before emigrating to Liverpool in 1844. There he obtained British citizenship and joined the Presbyterian church. At the time English law regarding the establishment of local chambers of commerce was highly unsystematic and wanting. He therefore advocated their institution in numerous pamphlets leading to the establishment of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce in 1849 with Levi as its secretary. In 1850 he published his Commercial Law of the World an exhaustive comparative treatise upon the laws and codes of mercantile countries. Appointed in 1852 to the chair of commercial law at King's College London he was a popular instructor who innovated evening classes. Levi was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1859 and a doctorate in political science from the University of Tübingen. His chief work History of British Commerce and of the Economic Progress of the British Nation 1763-1870 is considered to be a partisan account of British economic development but its value as a work of reference cannot be gainsaid.
