‎England. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1876. Non-Book. On offer is an autographed letter handwritten and signed by Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts 1st Baroness 1814-1906. Dated Torquay May 12 1876 Baroness Burdett-Coutts mentions plays "Queen Mary" and refers to Tennyson. Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts was a British philanthropist. Burdett-Coutts was widely known as "the richest heiress in England". She was a great collector of paintings including many Old Masters. In 1871 in recognition of her philanthropic work Queen Victoria conferred on her a suo jure peerage as Baroness Burdett-Coutts of Highgate and Brookfield in the County of Middlesex. Charles Dickens dedicated his novel Martin Chuzzlewit to her and she had many royal and eminent friends. On 18 July 1872 she became the first woman to be presented with the Freedom of the City of London at the Guildhall and in 1874 she became Edinburgh's first woman Freeman and was also presented with the Freedom of that city. This letter is dated July 16 1945 on 12 North Audley Street W1 London letterhead. Addressed to Mr. Solomonski Courtauld writes to Solomonski requesting the delivery of a painting of the artist's which he has purchased titled "In the Forest" Courtauld asks that the painting be delivered to his address following the closure of Solomonski's exhibition and states he will send a cheque to Solomonski "in due course". Courtauld signs the letter in ink. BIO NOTES: Fritz Fredrick Solomonski a German refugee living and exhibiting in Britian. Refers to the potential viewing of Solomonski’s work “In the Forest”. Very Good condition. Dr. Frederick K. “Fritz” Solomon née Solomonski 1899-1980 painter was born in Berlin Germany in 1899. In 1938 when the synagogue he was serving at was torched by Nazis and he was subsequently summoned by the Gestapo he left Germany with his wife Margot and emigrated to England. Solomonski was interned in the Isle of Man in Hutchinson Square camp in the early 1940’s as a prisoner of war along with many other artists. Samuel Courtauld was an English industrialist great-nephew of textile magnate Samuel Courtauld who is best remembered as an art collector. He founded the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 1932 and after a series of gifts during the 1930s bequeathed his collection to it upon his death. By the early 20th century the Courtauld family business had become a major international company having successfully developed and marketed rayon an artificial fibre and inexpensive silk substitute. The postcard is dated from the University of Museum Zoology Cambridge July 14 1905. It has been addressed by hand to C. Gordon Hewitt Esq. c/o R. H. March Esq Ingleside Epping Essex. Hewitt has written to Harmer informing him of the return of Dr. Sharp who he says will need to make an appointment with Harmer. He asks Harmer to send Dr. Sharp his address in Cambridge so that Sharp can make an appointment to see him if he has time. Harmer has signed the note S. F. Harmer. BIO NOTES: Sir Sidney Frederic Harmer FRS1 9 March 1862 - 22 October 1950 was a British zoologist. He was President of the Linnean Society 1927-1931 and was awarded the Linnean Medal in 1934. Sidney Harmer was Superintendent of the Cambridge University Museum of Zoology from 1892-1908. Harmer was Keeper of Zoology at the Natural History Museum from 1909 to 1921 and director of the Museum from 1919 to 1927. His research library is held in the National Marine Biological Library at the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth. He was the father of Russell Harmer the gold-medal winning British sailor and great uncle of the actress and writer Juliet Harmer best known for her role in the 1960s TV series Adam Adamant Lives! Faint and small library stamp on the titles Note: The Greek philosophic stylist Plutarchus of Chaeroneia ca. 46-120 A.D. wrote numerous short treatises on ethics and philosophy. He is however best known as historian and biographer. Plutarch composed with his famous 'Vitae' or Parallel Lives written ca. 100-120 A.D. a work of timeless quality. His aim was not writing history but biography so his chief interest was in the characters of the heroes and villains he portrayed never avoiding a good story. Plutarch exercised a very profound influence on Western civilisation. His collection of 'Vitae' has been one of the most frequently and continuously read books of the Western tradition. Treacherous to the historian Plutarch has won however since the Renaissance the affection of the many generations to whom he has been a main source of understanding of the ancient world that is early modern Europe discovered the ancient world through Plutarch's eyes. The Lives could gain an enormous impact by providing later biographers and literary authors an outstanding model. Authors like Montaigne Corneille Racine Rousseau Schiller and Shakespeare heavily drew upon the Lives. Until the 19th century the Lives were invoked as models of totalitarism anticlericalism by supporters and opponents. 'The founders of American democracy were avid readers of Plutarch as well and some laced their prose with evidence of that fact. Franklin and Hamilton in particular proclaimed their admiration for the Lives'. The Classical Tradition Cambr. Mass. 2010 p. 749 The first complete edition of Plutarch was published by the French humanist scholar/printer Henri Estienne Henricus Stephanus 1531-1598 who contributed greatly in the field of classical philology. He produced 58 Latin and 74 Greek editions of ancient authors of which 18 were 'editiones principes'. He is still famous for his huge 'Thesaurus Graecae Linguae' of 1572 his Plutarch edition of the same year and his 3 volume Plato edition of 1578. Scholars today still refer to the works of Plato and Plutarch by their ‘Stephanus’ pagination Provenance: Bookplate of 'docteur Paul Lecène'. It depicts a faun who is sitting on a book while playing a flute. Around him a motto in Greek: 'GÊRASKÔ D'AEI POLLA DIDASKOMENOS'. A famous text of the Greek philosopher Solon one of the Seven Wise. It means 'I grow old forever learning many things'. Monsieur Lecène 1878-1929 was a wellknown French surgeon. He has his own street 'La rue du Docteur-Lecène' in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. § The round stamp on the title is rather vague it seems to read: 'BIBLIOTHECA DUACENA'. This set must once have belonged to the University Library of Douai in the North of France. In 1793 during the French Revolution this Catholic bulwark against protestantism which was founded in 1560 by the Spanish king Philipp II was closed down and its library was incorporated in the 'Bibliothèque Municipale'. This library numbered 115000 works when it burned down by a bombardment on the 11th of August 1944. Nine tenth of the books were destroyed but the core of the collection manuscripts and 8 000 old books among which 450 incunables were saved. How this set of Plutarch escaped the confiscation and fire we do not know. His chief title to remembrance rests on the part he played as a man of influence in society and in moulding public opinion on literary matters in connection with his large circle of talented friends. He secured a pension for Tennyson helped to make Ralph Waldo Emerson known in Great Britain and was one of the earliest champions of Algernon Charles Swinburne. To his wife's mother Lady Hunter. Basil Hall's letter reads: "My dear Lady Hunter I write merely to report of myself and to mention that here we are safe and sound and all happy and merry with our journey. We came here on Sat. Eve. And passed yesterday chiefly with Mrs. Hoover and her family. Mr H. Is in England. In the evening Mr. Schlegel and other intelligent oxalises of both sexes came to Mrs. Homers. Many other interesting people were present and I had the pleasure of taking Mrs. Basil Hall to dinner and was seated next her mother Lady Hunter and almost opposite Lady Mary Clark. I did not feel so uncomfortable as usual; all were so kind affable and truly well-bred. At nine the ladies left us and Captain Basil Hall again attacked me about America and hundreds of questions were put to me by all which I answered as plainly and briefly as I could." Basil Hall was a British naval officer from Scotland a traveller and an author. Following Basil Hall's retirement from the navy in 1823 Hall was married on 1 March 1825 to Margaret Congalton d. 1876 the youngest daughter of Sir John Hunter Consul-General in Spain by his spouse Elizabeth Barbara sister to Sir William Arbuthnot 1st Baronet. Margaret Hall is the subject of a 1931 book "Aristocratic Journey. Being the outspoken letters of Mrs. Basil Hall written during a fourteen months' sojourn in America 1827-1828"Basil Hall commanded many vessels involved in exploration and scientific and diplomatic missions. From the beginning of his naval career he had been encouraged by his father to keep a journal which later became the source for a series of books and publications describing his travels. Hall toured the major cities of the eastern and southern states and his narrative includes comments on education politics and government the judicial system slavery and manufactures. In 1829 Hall published Travels in North America which caused some offense due to his criticisms of American society. ‎England. Very Good with no dust jacket. Non-Book. On offer is a manuscript letter by Scottish multi-genre painter Thomas Faed. Measures 5-1/4 x 3-1/2 inches. Autograph letter signed. One page. Undated. To the editor of The Athenaeum William Hepworth Dixon a friend and English historian and traveler. Noting a change in the title of a work. Black border frame on note old paper clip marking on top left otherwise good condition. Thomas Faed was a Scottish painter in oils and water colour of genre portraits interiors and domestic scenes. It is said Faed had done for Scottish art what Robert Burns did for Scottish song. Pathos being the staple of his success. He received his art education in the school of design Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1849. He went to London three years later was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1861 and academician in 1864 and retired in 1893.
