Two horseshoe holes at bottom of page not affecting hand-writing otherwise good condition. Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages. Dated Walton near Liverpool Sept 4th no year. To Reverend Dr. Raffles seeking the submission of a note from Raffles concerning an upcoming motion at the meeting of the Brooks Testimonial. Benjamin Edward Spence was a British neo-classical sculptor who spent much of his professional life in Italy. At the age of 16 he made a portrait bust of William Roscoe and in 1846 he was awarded the Heywood silver medal and a cash by the Royal Manchester Institution for a group in clay of the death of the Duke of York at the battle of Agincourt. Between 1849 and 1867 Spence contributed to the exhibition of the Royal Academy five times: in 1850 with "Ophelia" in 1856 "Venus and Cupid" in 1861 "Hippolytus" and in 1867 "The Parting of Hector and Andromache". He contributed "Highland Mary" to the Exposition Universelle 1855 and two works "Finding of Moses" and "Jeanie Deans before Queen Caroline" to the International Exhibition 1862. Brougham wrote this letter to clarify the terms of a mortgage and to note an upcoming visit he will take to Brougham where he will settle the matter. Letter measures 4-1/2x7-1/4 inches. One page folded with writing on two pages. Age toning noted and small folds but otherwise VG. William Brougham 2nd Baron Brougham and Vaux known as William Brougham until 1868 was a British barrister and Whig politician. In 1868 he succeeded his elder brother as second Baron Brougham and Vaux according to a special remainder in the letters patent and was able to take a seat in the House of Lords. William Brougham was the younger brother of Henry Peter Brougham 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux Lord Chancellor of England 1778-1868. Brougham was appointed a Master in Chancery in 1831 which he remained until the following year. In 1831 he was also returned to Parliament for Southwark a seat he held until 1835. On offer is a short but meaningful letter written by Edward Cardwell Viscount Cardwell 1813-1886 Letter measures 7 x 4-1/2 inches. 1864 water marked paper. Autograph letter signed. One page. Dated 74 Eaton Square. 4.26.1867. Confirming he will attend a meeting “ and render your brother any service in my power. ”Edward Cardwell Viscount Cardwell was a British statesman Secretary of State for War 1868–74. Cardwell as Secretary of State for War designed the reforms that Gladstone supported in the name of efficiency and democracy. In 1868 he abolished flogging raising the private soldier status to more like an honorable career. In 1870 Cardwell abolished "bounty money" for recruits discharged known bad characters from the ranks. He pulled 20000 soldiers out of self-governing colonies like Canada which learned they had to help defend themselves. The most radical change and one that required Gladstone's political muscle was to abolish the system of officers obtaining commissions and promotions by purchase rather than by merit. The system meant that the rich landholding families controlled all the middle and senior ranks in the army. The first is a two-page letter dated Stoneleigh Abbey Jan 28 1900 handwritten and signed by Leigh to Murray Browne requesting admission for “a Lady to the House of Lords next Tuesday to hear the debate on the Queen’s speech when the war in S. Africa is to be discussed…. ”. The second letter is written to Leigh handwritten and signed by general and colonel commandant royal artillery Michael Anthony Biddulph 1823-1904. In this letter dated January 27 1900 Biddulph declines Lord Leith’s request for a pass to the House of Commons. The first letter measures 7 x 8-3/4 flat folded to 7 x 4-3/8 inches. It has three pages of writing. The second letter is a single page measuring 7 x 4-3/8 inches. Both VG condition. BIO NOTES: William Leigh 2nd Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh Abbey. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh co. Warwick U. K. 1839 on 27 September 1850. An advocate of British imperialism and opponent of women's suffrage. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire between 1856 and 1905. He held the office of High Steward of Sutton Coldfield between 1859 and 1892.1 He held the office of High Steward of Sutton Coldfield between 1859 and 1892.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace J. P. for Gloucestershire.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 3rd Battalion Warwicks Regiment. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law LL. ‎England. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1866. Non-Book. On offer is an Autographed Signed Letter ASL of Thomas Pemberton Leigh 1st Baron Kingsdown 1793-1867. The short but interesting letter refers to cold weather delaying a meeting. It was dated 27 Feb. 1866 which is only a year before Leigh's death. Thomas Pemberton Leigh 1st Baron Kingsdown was a British barrister judge and politician. Originally a successful equity lawyer Kingsdown then entered politics and sat as an MP from 1831 to 1832 and from 1835 to 1843. From 1841 to 1843 he was attorney general for the Duchy of Cornwall. However he is best remembered for his role on the judicial committee of the Privy Council of which he was a member for nearly twenty years. Having refused the Lord Chancellorship in 1858 he was the same year elevated to the peerage as Baron Kingsdown. In 1858 on the formation of Lord Derby's second administration he was offered the office of Lord Chancellor but declined. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Kingsdown of Kingsdown in the County of Kent the same year. In 1861 he was instrumental in the passing of the Wills Act 1861 later known as Lord Kingsdown's Act by which a will made out of the United Kingdom by a British subject is as far as regards personal estate good if made according to the forms required by the law of the place where it was made or by the law of the testator's domicil at the time of making it or by the law of the place of his domicil of origin. Primarily this had ramifications for members of the British armed forces. Letter measures 5-1/4 x 3-1/2 inches on 3 Spring Garden Terrace letterhead. John Wodehouse was at Petersburg Russia exactly two years from June 1856 until May 1858. "Ker" may refer to Henry Ker Seymer 1807-1864 Of Hanford House was the Member of Parliament for Dorset. Letter measures 7-1/4 x 9 inches. Autograph letter signed. Three pages. Good condition. John Wodehouse 1st Earl of Kimberley was a British Liberal politician. He held office in every Liberal administration from 1852 to 1895 notably as Secretary of State for the Colonies and as Foreign Secretary. He was known as the Lord Wodehouse from 1846 to 1866. He was the only Liberal to serve in every Cabinet of the Gladstone/ Rosebery time period. He was at the colonial office when responsible government was granted to Cape Colony and when British Columbia was added to the Dominion of Canada. Dated 16 September 1876 the Earl is inviting Lady Holland to visit with her husband. Henry Howard Molyneux Herbert 4th Earl of Carnarvon known as Lord Porchester from 1833 to 1849. British politician and a leading member of the Conservative Party. The establishment of the Dominion of Canada as a confederation was a desirable enhancement of responsible government having immense possibilities for colonies and mother country. He was willing to adopt it as an imperial object in any group of colonies where it seemed appropriate and locally acceptable Colonial secretary under Derby and Disraeli he federated the Canadian provinces into a self-governing dominion by the British North America Act 1867. The letters addressed from Northampton Barracks and one dated August 16th no year. The second is simply dated "Tuesday". Both letters are addressed only to a "Sir" and both discuss making arrangements for the receipt of books. Arthur Wellesley Williams was a Major in the army 10th Hussars when he died in 1891. Born on 1817 to Robert Williams and Anne Hughes. Arthur married Rose Stoddart and they had 7 children. Williams was appointed Captain without purchase in 1853 in the 12 Regiment of Light Dragoons. Two autograph letters signed. Each; one hand written page of 4 pages; folded to 7-1/4 x 4-1/2 inches. There is an X marked on both letters below heading. Both pieces have a hole in the centre approximately 1/4 inch affecting one word on one page of each letter. Age toned paper with minor soiling. ‎England. Good. Non-Book. On offer is an Autographed Signed Letter ASL of Major General Sir John Carstairs McNeill 1831-1904. Dated Monday no month no year McNeill writes asking "Dear Old Man" to convey a message to his "Missus" about something to do with what appears to say "H. R. H." His Royal Highness. McNeill signs the letter at the bottom. John Carstairs McNeill was a Scottish recipient for the Victoria Cross for bravery in New Zealand when he was Lt Col. 107th Regiment Ohaupo 30 March 1864. For the valour and presence of mind which he displayed in New Zealand on the 30th of March 1864 which is thus described by Private Vesper of the Colonial Defence Force. Private Vosper states that he was sent on that day with Private Gibson of the same Force as an escort to Major now Lieutenant- Colonel McNeill Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant-General Sir Duncan Cameron. Lieutenant-Colonel McNeill was proceeding to Te Awamutu on duty at the time. On returning from that place and about a mile on this side of Ohanpu this Officer having seen a body of the enemy in front sent Private Gibson back to bring up Infantry from Ohanpu and he and Private Vosper proceeded leisurely to the top of a rise to watch the enemy. Suddenly they were attacked by about 50 natives who were concealed in the fern close at hand. Their only chance of escape was by riding for their lives and as they turned to gallop Private Vesper's horse fell and threw him. The natives thereupon rushed forward to seize him but Lieutenant-Colonel McNeill on perceiving that Private Vosper was not following him returned caught his horse and helped him to mount. The natives were firing sharply at them and were so near that according to Private Vesper's statement it was only by galloping as hard as they could that they escaped. He says that he owes his life entirely to Lieutenant-Colonel McNeill's assistance for he could not have caught his horse alone and in a few minutes must have been killed. The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration awarded for valour "in the face of the enemy" to members of the armed forces of various Commonwealth countries and previous British Empire territories. Letter measures 8 x 5 inches from a piece of paper 8x10 inches that has been folded in half. Autograph letter signed. One page of writing. On offer is a handwritten and signed letter by an important Victorian-era female writer addressed to a fellow writer who submitted a piece to St. James magazine. The author of the letter is Charlotte Riddell nee Cowan 1832-1906 who also went by the pseudonyms Mrs. Joseph H. Riddell; F. G. Trafford; R. V. Sparling; Rainey Hawthorne. Riddell was an Irish-born British author dubbed the "Novelist of the City" in Victorian England. She wrote about finance and business but is best-known in the modern-era for her Victorian ghost stories. Learn more about Riddell in BIO NOTES at the end of the listing. This letter is dated April 14th 1868 in London. Riddell writes to an unidentified "Madam" returning a manuscript submitted for publication. In April of 1868 Riddell had become part owner and editor at St. James Magazine. In the letter she writes: "I am sorry to have to seem ungrateful for your kind note but the staff of the St. James is complete and I am obliged to return your M. S. Without even looking at it. I may add mine is the exception to the London rule.I have a number of regular contributors." . BIO NOTES: Charlotte Riddell born Charlotte Eliza Lawson Cowan aka Mrs J. H. Riddell was a prolific English novelist and story writer during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Riddell published forty novels plus tales in journals annuals and her own collections two travel books and essays in periodicals. She was best-known in her own day for her domestic novels sensation novels and local and mystery novels. She has become more prominent in recent times for her highly-regarded ghost stories. She is unusual both in her depictions of the male-only business and financial aspects of London life and in choosing lyrical country settings from the immediate area of London both to the north-east and the south-west. Amongst her novels were: The Haunted House at Latchford aka Fairy Water 1872 ; The Earl's Promise 1873 ; The Uninhabited House 1875 ; The Haunted River 1877 ; The Disappearance of Jeremiah Redworth 1878 ; Maxwell Drewitt 1879 and The Nun's Curse 1888. ‎1893 Handwritten Transcription of Thomas Hood’s Romantic “Sonnet for the 14th of February”‎

‎Poor with no dust jacket. 1893. Manuscript. On offer is a testament to true love on Valentine’s Day in the late 19th century. This 14 line sonnet was handwritten by an unknown transcriptionist presumably for his Valentine. He has written out British poet Thomas Hood’s 1799-1845 Sonnet for the 14th of February in a lovely cursive hand. He has dated the poem February 14 1893. Our transcriptionist has made some changes to personalize the poem such as changing the phrase “And to his mistress dear his hopes convey” to “And to his dearest one his hopes convey” Line 5. The poem is credited to “Tom Hood modified ” and signed with the initials FHI. This poem’s biggest flaw is one of its greatest assets. It is clear from the way the piece of paper has ripped at all of its fold lines that the recipient of this poem kept it near and dear for a great many years. The paper on which the poem is written is in very poor condition. It has been taped back together with clear tape many years ago. The tape has browned and become one with the paper. This handsome General Order titled "Exchange of Prisoners of War" announces that "The following prisoners of war received and delivered at Rough and Ready Georgia the 19th 22d 28th and 30th days of September 1864 in pursuance of an agreement between Major General W.T. SHERMAN U.S. Army and General Hood are declared duly exchanged." -- followed by large numbers of Union commissioned officers non-commissioned officers and privates totaling 1128 soldiers and Confederate commissioned officers non-commissioned officers and privates totaling 1332 soldiers.
