British Isles : c. 1820. Fine condition. A scarce and charming original early nineteenth century watercolor painting on wove paper. 7 x 7.25 inches 177 x 186 mm. The painting has been tipped onto ecru wove album paper of the period as was the custom yet the watercolors remain vibrant and rich. Although the origin of this lovely painting is unknown a refined and experienced hand clearly created this detailed and elegant composition. The details are fine; both the tones and shading display the painter's astute understanding of composition and perspective. The artist no doubt was an armchair or "parlor" watercolorist likely an aristocratic gentlewoman or man who sought inspiration from the vast array of published volumes complete with engraved plates of the trades and costumes of then exotic regions of the globe thus the inspiration seems apparent. Archivally framed in Ivory rag matting with neo-classical gilt moulding. unknown

Autograph Letter Signed to General John Barrington Fort Royal Guadeloupe April 1 1759
folio two pages inscribed on four page bi-folium docketed in ink on rear leaf paper somewhat stained holes in paper affecting text of about seven words in upper portion of each page however the sense of the letter is unaffected else good. Cunninghame writes to Barrington concerning Governor Melvill who commanded the Citadel at Port Royal and the general state of affairs there during a crucial point in the British campaign to take Guadeloupe. Cunninghame writes: "Sir By what Governor Melville has explained to me of the express to you of the 30th the strain of it is so different from his first Reports of the Garrison that I need say nothing more than that he now saw with his own eyes and shall be henceforth guided by his own judgment. The true cause of the gloom of that report was his being much out of Order and Confin'd so that he was obliged to depend on the representations of those that had not a proper view of the state of this Garrison. But since he has had time to consider and reflect on every Circumstance attending this place. I beg leave to confirm the opinion you formerly had that no Officer of your army will fulfill the duty of a Governor with more intelligence circumspection and resolution than W. Melville Barrington had appointed Melvill governor a week earlier . We got here in time last night to make a tour of the works and its circuit superficially. The Enemy has got a Bomb Battery of one Mortar as the deserters say on the top of that green hill where a body of troops first appeared that day we attacked them under your command on the south side of the gallion. The gun battery reported is on the same side the trench under the large green tree the left commanding the Beach the right towards the Jesuits on the south of the gallion I think exactly as the place our people used to fire so much upon while we were here. There are two guns and will probably open in a day or two. I beg'd the Governour to assemble all the Officers tonight. In their prescence I explained to them the situation The reason of the commanding officer . and me being sent to them your intentions toward them and the absolute necessity there was of defending this place to the last extremity against an impotent . and dispirited enemy . I beg'd to know if any one had doubts or apprehensions It was answered there was none there that wou'd not chuse to die in the Breach rather than give up the place improperly." The island of Guadeloupe was one of the most profitable of all the French colonies and as such was a prime target of the British during the conflict of the Seven Years War. The British forces attacked the neighboring island of Martinique on January 6 1759 bombarding the town of Port Royal. The English forces under General Hopson and Commodore John Moore made an abortive attempt to capture the town. The bombardment of Basse Terre Guadeloupe began on January 23 1759 by Commodore Moore's squadron prior to its invasion by British troops. On January 24 an invasion force under General Hopson captured the town. General Hopson died on Guadeloupe on February 23 he was succeeded in command by Major-General John Barrington. The French surrendered the island to the British under General Barrington on May 1 1759 after a three month campaign. The island was occupied by the British for four years and was returned to the French by the terms of the Treaty of Paris in 1763. France in order to retain Guadeloupe signed away her claims to Canada under this treaty. Despite the condition problems a most interesting letter from this campaign material from which is extremely scarce.

Folio two pages inscribed on a four page bi-folium paper browned some paper loss on integral address leaf else in good legible condition. Letter from John W. Kittera Federalist member of Congress from Lancaster Pennsylvania to Jasper Yeates 1745-1817 jurist and justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court also from Lancaster in which Kittera relates some of the growing tensions arising from the Proclamation of Neutrality in 1793 after the declaration of war by France against Great Britain and the extension of the wars of the French Revolution into a greater maritime war and the resultant seizure of American shipping by the British as well as the French. " At this most critical and alarming period when the public bodies are in a perfect state of uncertainty whether our common country shall long enjoy the blessings of peace or soon be involved in all the horrors of war you will excuse me for intruding on you a few sentiments that have strongly impressed my mind. - While the government have declared this country in a state of neutrality the people by their public rejoicings at the success of the French arms by the secret aid furnished to the French by their town meetings hasty resolves and newspaper publications are evidently endangering the peace of the Country. The depredations committed on our trade particularly in the West Indies have so provoked the mercantile part of the community that their resentments can in many parts of the Union with difficulty be restrained. The Judge of the island of Montserrat an unprincipled rascal who is said to be interested in most of the privateers condemns all the American vessels that are tried in his Court. Injuries to our trade of the grossest kind are not only received from the British who have really received some provocation by the frauds of our merchants and the conduct of our Citizens but the French have detained in Bordeau above one hundred sale of American merchantmen by an imbargo for near six months. sic In this State of things what is best to be done is a question of immense difficulty. Congress have had their doors shut for three or four days past and I am at liberty to inform you that a question was taken respecting the laying of an imbargo sic and carried in the negative by a small majority. At first I confess I felt favorably disposed towards the measure but on the discussion changed my sentiments. I never saw Congress reduced to so many difficulties - You have seen the resolves of our town meeting. Dallas and Swanart harangued the crowd from the State House window and received a general huzza at the conclusion of each resolution. One drunken sailor had the assurance to say No for which he had two of his ribs broken and otherways much abused. But few of the respectable Citizens attended another meeting is to be had this evening. The mob at New York assembled on Sunday week entered the Roman Chapel playing the time of Caira drove the priest from the altar & the worshippers from the Church. These violent measures are productions of the worst of all evils and if instead of intrusting the management of the government in the hands of the Representatives of the people designing men are thus frequently to assemble the people to legislate for themselves the objection made by Despots to a republican form of government that it is good in theory but bad in practice is a good objection. Those things are particularly improper at a time like the present. Excuse the freedom of these sentiments." Known as "Gentleman Jim" this influential Country Western singer of the '50s and '60s achieved great popularity with such hits as "He'll Have to Go" 1960; he died at age 40 in a plane crash in Tennessee. Color IPS verso heavy stock 3½" X 5½" n.p. n.d. Near fine. Handsome color picture postcard issued by RCA Victor Records the recto featuring a nice half-length portrait of Reeves in tie and red sweater. Verso features message and address portions and across this in bold large script as red as his sweater Reeves writes "To / Donald / Best of luck always / Gratefully / Jim Reeves." The signature itself which runs from the lower left corner to the upper right corner measures a full 5½"! A superb example of this rarity. unknown

An Appeal to Humanity
Broadside. 4to 9½" X 12". Near fine. Faintly age toned and with just the slightest bit of edgewear. Puerto Plata also spelled Porto Plata is the capital city of a province bearing the same name on the north coast of the Dominican Republic and on the night of August 21 1871 a fire engulfed that city's commercial district crippling this remote district. On this occasion the province's governor RAMON D. PACHECO and the president of its Ayuntamiento municipality council FEDERICO M. LEYBA signed in type this broadside which consists of two side-by-side columns in English. In highly flowery language and twisted grammar Pacheco and Leyba describe the fire and what it did to their city and its residents. In part: "Forty six buildings which encircled the only and most valuable that held the greatest credit that represented the complement of the towns welfare the support of the majority of the population and in short were the prop of the Government the guarantee of wealth the fountain of labor the stability of the present and rich signification of the future have in three hours been converted into smoking ruins; horrible tomb of so many lives that moments before were agitating with overflow of stamina." They plead for help from the international community: "Porto Plata knows that its appeal will be heeded and therefore does not falter but addresses readily all nations brothers in sufferings; all peoples sympathizers with distress; all the powerful compassionate to misfortune in search of the help it requires to even prove after that if it knows to beg it also will know to fulfil and guard in each bosom of its children altars of lasting gratitude. For this end it directs its wailings to the representatives of the Republic." Dated "Porto-Plata August 23d 1871." At the bottom between Pacheco and Leyba's bold typeface names appears the large 2" diameter official circular blind-embossed imprint of the Ayuntamiento of Puerto Plata. On the verso of this intriguing broadside appear four dockets -- seals and notarizing signatures from four consulates testifying to the truth of the devastation described in the broadside. "This is to certify" pens the first docket "that the foregoing is a correct statement and that Ramon D. Pacheco is Governor of this district and Federico M Leyba President of the Town Council. Porta Plata August 25h 1871. Theodore Farrington B.V. Consul." Alongside this is the circular blind-embossed seal of the British Vice Consul of Porto Plata. Below this appears the circular blind-embossed seal of the U.S. Commercial Agency of Puerto Plata with the illegible signature of that official plus title "U.S. V.C. Agt"; below that the circular blue inkstamped seal of the North German Consulate in Porto Plata and the illegible signature and title of that official; below that the circular blind-embossed seal of the Danish Consul at Puerto de Plata and the signature of G.L.H. Zeller with title; and below that the signature of "Charles Albert Neumann / Consul for Austria=Hungaria" who also pens "consular Seal" in lieu of a missing official Austro-Hungarian consular seal; and in a second column at right the illegible signature and rank of the French vice consul who also pens "Consular Seal" in lieu of a missing official French consular seal. A provocative and rare broadside uniquely docketed by six diplomatic officials on the verso. Ironically that other great fire of 1871 would take place about one and a half months after this: the great Chicago fire of 1871 which caused far greater destruction and got far greater press attention. Accompanying this broadside is a 1930s vintage printed manila folder from pioneering Midwest autograph dealer Forest H. Sweet "American Historical Material / Battle Creek Michigan" with his early catalogue description of this item affixed at center. unknown

Fourth Edition first published in 1839. 8vo size hardcover has tan and blue green marbled boards under leather spine and corners. 324 pages with red speckled outside pages. Firmly sewn binding. Half title page follows title page. Dr. Josef Skoda 1805 - 1881 is best known for his work as a pioneer in percussive diagnostics. The facq.org biography of Skoda says: "In 1839 Skoda published his treatise on percussion and auscultation. In it he attempts to classify the sounds in the chest according to categories that take into account musical pitch and tonality with alternations from full to hollow clear to dull tympanitic to muffled and high to deep. The drum-like tympanic resonance heard on percussion above an area of pneumonia or lung fluid is known as Skodaic resonance." An article about Dr. Skoda on whonamedit.com explains Skoda's development or expansion of the work of Josef Leopold Auenbrugger more than 50 years before of the fundamentals of percussion and auscultation as diagnostical tools in clinical medicine: "Around 1836 Skoda began investigating the fundamentals of percussion and auscultation then two of the modern examination methods in clinical medicine. Skoda's approach was based solely on the objective description of physical signs. To him the acoustic phenomena produced by percussion were not specific for a given organ but for the amount of air or fluid; hollow empty tympanic high deep clear dull. Based on acoustic phenomena Skoda tried to explain the physical changes in an organ and then from the anatomical and pathologic possibilities he reached a clinical diagnostic conclusion. In the theory of auscultation Skoda first distinguished reverberations heart sounds from cardiac murmurs. On the basis of comparative observations of healthy people and those known to have heart disease he learned to diagnose various heart illnesses from the presence of murmurs in individual valves. He also evaluated pulsations of the neck veins and accentuation of further reverberations in the pulmonary artery. Through his lucid account of functional changes and symptoms attendant upon various changes in valves of the heart or the pericardium he established the principles of the clinical physiology of heart diseases." Booksellers notation and owner's name on fep. Title page has some soil looks like graphite and a penciled name just above title. Title page and following page have a lower corner which was not cut properly by publisher and is folded at corner. There is a large - about three quarters of the page - light stain first visible on back of title page and staining continues to varying sizes throughout the book. Pages are surprisingly bright especially toward the center and stain does not obscure any text. There is also stain on lower corner of pages 245 through 276. There also appears to be some very light foxing mostly in the right margin throughout. Author Elisabeth Sanxay Holding 18891955 began her career as a writer of romance novels. After almost a decade of romance Holding switched to the genre of the detective thriller. Miasma was the first detective novel Holding wrote. Holding's work was well received by critics and peers. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1901. Manuscript. On offer is a typewritten job offer from the owner of a nursery wholesaler hoping to land a reliable new employee. Dated Feb 211901 and signed in ink by E. W. Fisk himself this typewritten letter is a full page imploring a potential new hire to take a job as a salesman running a currently unmanned territory. Given the fact that each territory operator will work remotely Fisk highlights the importance of hiring a man who is strictly honorable and upright. Fisk goes on to describe the benefits of working for his company: We have been in business for a long time and this long experience enables us to place the very best grade of stock grown in the hands of our salesmenit means you are able to sell over and over again in the same territory; that you are able to work up a better trade each season; that your customers will be glad to see you a second timeFisk even invites the candidate to verify their financial health with the First National Bank before requesting the candidate reply by mail with their decision. For anyone working in a modern Human Resources or business leadership role this letter is an absolutely fascinating look at how job offers were made and accepted over 100 years ago. The letter is typed on E. W. Fisk Nurseryman letterhead. It has minor age toning and creases. No rips or tears. A small ink blot is present on the letterhead. It does not obscure the readability. 1920s Pair of Letters One Angry and One Joyful Written to a Pennsylvania Boy in Quantico and Then Back Home in Birdsboro
Quantico Virginia. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1920. Manuscript. L . On offer are two letters written to Elmer Roland Francis 1903-1973 of Birdsboro Pennsylvania. The first letter is written while Elmer is serving in the military and staying in the Marine Barracks in Quantico Virginia in 1923. The second is an upbeat newsy letter sent to Elmer once he is home in Birdsboro in 1927. The 1923 letter is of a terse tone and reads as though written by someone very close to Elmer. The author of the letter Gerald Gordon who is also in the army at the time he discusses being on watch expresses frustration with Elmer who had canceled a planned trip to see them after the person had gone to great lengths to prepare for his arrival. The author goes on to make suggestions as to how to make another visit work in the coming weeks finally settling on the idea of coming to stay on the boat where Elmer is living over a weekend. An excerpt follows: It is a lot to ask of you kids but if it isnt I may come up on the boat Friday PM and stay with you until Sunday. I dont know but you may half way work for me and we will get things straightened upI will see what you think about me comingit does not cost me any thing to come over there and come backThe second letter is a congenial catch-up letter from a very confident young gentleman named V. L. Tucker to his buddy Elmer who is now back home and out of the army. Written in 1927 Tucker who is currently living in Chicago writes with the overconfidence of a young man who has no idea what lies ahead for America and the world. For nearly three pages Tucker writes on Hotel Carlton Chicago stationary. He refers to his buddy as Rollie and to himself as Tuck. He briefly asks after Rollie: Well Rollie how does it feel to be free white and twenty one again I dont guess you are planning to go back into the outfit again are you what are you doing. I mean what kind of work or play Tuck also updates Rollie on mutual friends he has been catching up with such as Chuck Bulgar who is stationed at Quantico in 1927 and spent his 30 day leave in Chicago with Tuck giving him the inside scoop on his work. Tucks favourite topic of course is himself. He writes with a hint of pride and a heap of bragging about his job. An excerpt follows: .I have been made general mgr. manager.for the people I work for out in Conn so I suree have a swell job. And only been with them six months. If I keep this up I think I own the whole business in five years ha ha. This letter is a fun look at male friendship in the Roaring 20s made especially fascinating with hindsight knowing what was to come in a couple short years with the onset of the Great Depression followed by the Second World War. We know for certain that this letters recipient Elmer fought for the US in the war. Written on 8.5 x 11 standard sized paper and including addressed envelopes the letters are in good condition. All pages show some minor age toning and fold lines from the letters having been kept in envelopes. The writing is in black pen and is clear and legible. No rips or tears. 1940 Highly Relatable Letter from a Friend Who Just Could Not Make it to the Hospital for a Visit and Feels Just Terrible
Factoryville Pennsylvania. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1940. Manuscript. On offer is a sweet letter written to Mrs. Daisy Ball Bailey 1897-1964 of Dalton Pennsylvania from her friend Flora who lives in nearby Factoryville PA. The letter was written on May 12 1940 and addressed to Daisy at home in Dalton although at the time of writing Daisy was hospitalized having undergone surgery. The letter is four pages one single page folded in half with writing on four sides. Throughout the entire letter Flora provides Daisy with multiple reasons possibly excuses as to why she was unable to come to the hospital to visit her. Floras reasons include: she was packing she was busy serving her husbands colleagues meals Daisys husband never told her the visiting hours at the hospital and that she got lost on the way to the hospital. She then sends Daisy endless good wishes including a wish that Daisy would come and stay with her soon. While it was written over 80 years ago it will ring very true to any modern person who is trying and failing to do it all. This letter would be a great reminder that we are all doing our best and would look perfect framed in the office of a busy and hard-working 21st century person. The letter is written in pencil and is very legible. Paper shows some signs of age toning and folds are visible. No rips or tears. The envelope is present but the stamp has been cut out. FORT CROWDER MISSOURI - WINNIPEG CANADA. Good. 1945. On offer is an excellent collection of letters written by a U.S. soldier in WWII to his parents. The collection contains 84 letters. They are in good condition and the handwriting is legible. Arno Edgar Wallace Maurer was 23 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. army. Entering as a Private he finished the war as a Staff Sergeant. Born in 1921 in Winnipeg Canada he lived until 2015 passing away at the age of 94. After the war he received B.A. and M.A. from the University of Manitoba and PhD from the University of Wisconsin and was teaching English literature at the Ohio State University for over 50 years specializing in the 18th century literature. He published extensively on John Dryden and was one of the editors of The Works of John Dryden published in 1989. The letters were written to his parents. His father Carl Dietrich Wallace was an American pastor who had been appointed to a Canadian church congregation in Winnipeg MB. The letters cover the period Jan 1945 to June 1946. They offer a detailed look into the day-to-day life of a soldier posted to a domestic base. Maurer was posted to a Signals Training Battalion and stationed first in Missouri and later in New Jersey. The letters begin in January 1945 right after he enlisted. "Dear Mama and Papa It's like a night in late summer out here now. I moved today to another section of the Camp where I will be taking 6 weeks of basic training as they tell me. Most of this letter is going to be made up of asking for things. I wonder whether you could send me two locks with keys not quite the size of my bicycle lock. If one should develop a toehold in entertainment here one might get into Special Service though I'm not gunning for anything except to be as active and employed as possible and the piano is as good as the next thing. ." Feb 6 1945. He writes almost daily. Some letters are long others quite short. But they always offer a tidbit of information about life in Camp Crowder: "Had your letter of 22nd today. . This morning we went into the prison compound and searched it for tools knives unauthorized letters etc. A periodic search. The "Strength For Service" book is alright. Is Derrick in the army now Believe I will stay here. I'm not sure when we'll be called out this noon. Wallace" Mar 23 1945. By May 1946 he has been promoted to Staff Sergeant and posted to Fort Dix NJ. "Dear Ma and Pa Got home alright late yesterday afternoon. It was certainly a nice trip. I left on Thursday morning with 87 men in my charge in 3 cars . I registered a compartment for my office and travelled like a little big shot all the way. We travelled down via Trenton Cincinnati and Louisville to Fort Knox. ." May 5 1946. This collection gives a very good look at the daily life of an American soldier stationed within the United States during WWII. The many details recounted offer a researcher or historian an excellent way to cross-reference and or corroborate information garnered from other sources. 1948 - 1949 Original Handwritten Diary by an Attentive but Homesick United States Air Force Pilot Brought over to Japan to Assist in the Administration of the Post-World War Two American Occupation of Japan
TOKYO HONSHU ISLAND AMERICAN OCCUPIED JAPAN. Very Good. 1948. On offer is a diary kept by United States Air Force Pilot on assignment to occupied Japan only a few years after the end of World War 2. The diary begins in September 1948 and continues till March 1949. The authors name was Roland W. Myers a member of the 385th Bombardment Group/549th Bomb Squadron. Myers would stay in the Air Force from 1948 till 1964 retiring as a Major. Myers leaves his home and wife in San Rafael California and sails for Japan on the USAT Hope. On the ship he gets his assignment. In my orders I am being sent to the 13th Air Depot Honshu Island Japan. Arriving in Japan Myers is assigned to Air Control man power section which is headed by Lt. Col. Greck who real seem like a nice guy though I dont know much about it now. Anyhow I have a nice desk job with good possibilities. In Japan Myers has a good bit of trouble adjusting and comments often on is observations of the Japanese people and their customs especially when it comes to his experiences at church. His job in Tokyo seems to be mostly filing and processing requests. Though being a trained Air Force pilot he does occasionally go on long flights around Japan. In November he is transferred to the Far East Air Force base in Tokyo. He writes my job will be TI & E Troop Information and Education officer. The job turns out to be quite a lot of work and he has a good deal of trouble at first. Myers keeps a somewhat detailed account of each and every single day. Occasionally it is little more than a sentence stating he worked and how it went but more often than not the entries contain a number of sentences about the days events who he met what he did at work how long and where he flew etc. He also writes that he acts as a Defense Council for soldiers being court martialled. In mid-January Myers writes the his wife and children will be sailing to Japan to join him permanently. When she arrives about two weeks later the diary ends: March 5 1948. Met Doris on the Sultan. Quite a boat. This line finishes this story for my life begins again with her and the childrens arrival. In the back of the book are monthly tallies of cash expenditures that show exactly what Myers brought in on income what he spent on food clothes pleasure dentist etc. and the balance at the end of the month. It seems that his goal was to save $5000. The cash accounts go beyond the scope of the diary entries themselves keeping stock of income and expenditures up until October 1953. There are also a few pages where Myers has recorded information about his flying habits. It shows the date aircraft flown station left from number of landings and time of flight. From 1948 to 1950 Myers flew dozens and dozens of times. The covers and spine are in good condition showing only small amounts of wear on the soft black leather binding. The book is approximately 250 pages long with roughly 90 pages of writing. The pages themselves are in good condition showing little wear or discoloration throughout. The handwriting is clear and legible throughout in a combination of blue and black ink and occasionally pencil which has not faded. OVERALL: VG. Text: Sept. 4 1948. Left the most wonderful wife in the world at 8:35 A.M. Not too bad for I tried to arrange to get there at the last min so the good-by would not drag out. Got on a bus and went into San Francisco where we got on the ship at Fort Mason USAT HS Hope is its name. Not too big a ship I am afraid to say. Our quarters are not too good. This ship is set up for Hospital patients and no room for luggage. Left the dock at 1200 noon. Had a fire drill at 1:00 and got under way about 2:00. The sea became choppy almost immediately. Had 2 good meals. Went to an outdoor show and finally to bed at 11:30 - Many sick. felt rather good 2 or 3 times but nothing happen so far. It really got rough tonight.; Sept. 19. Saw land about 10:00 in the morning on the western side of Honshu the main island of Japan. Later on some fishing boats with High Bows Dragon. Entered Tokyo Bay about 3:00 in the afternoon or 1500 where we picked up a pilot who took the ship in near the break water where we anchored overnight. Lots of lights from Yokohama. Spent quite a bit of the day getting straightened around clothes put away polish bras shoes shine etc. Sixteen days aboard ship. Gosh what a long time.; Oct. 12. Went out to Haneda and took off in a C47 for a 3hr. Flight. Saw Fuji and Tokyo Bay Yokohama and a few more cities. Up to 7000. Capt Weaver was giving an instrument check to someone else. They made 4 landings. The last of which was a GCA they can bring you right down to the run way just a matter of flying instruments. In the afternoon I had a ride of 1hr in AT6 which is a single engine job. That the one I am going to learn they say to fly. Went up and looked around.; January 19 1949. Today is the day for Doris to get on the boat. Hope everything is alright. Well 13 days from now should be the time. Not much doing today look like.; January 20. Went to the office around 9:00 work till 10. The church and then back to work and left there at 1200. Got ready to present the Welfare Fund and 3 or 4 things to the Col. at a meeting at 10:30 in the morning. I am going to ask to spend close to $600.00. Wonder if I will get it anyway I am prepared. Had dinner at TE and found a Columbus Ohio newspaper in the hall which I was reading when a boyson brought me a radiogram which read Leaving Friday Eighteenth USAT Sultan. Love Doris. Its funny I got a terrific thrill although I know the boat had left. Indulged in my old hobby or habit of collecting coins and paper money.Also went through the P.X. they had from Siam. Also saw lots of beautiful good suppose to be a rent buy but will wait and let Doris get what she wants. Background: Roland W. Myers was born in 1918 and passed away January 21 2010 in Sun Lakes Arizona. He was born in Dayton Ohio and as a young man he joined the Army Air Corp. After college he taught high school and also coached basketball. In 1948 he went back into the Air Force retiring in 1964 as a Major and returned to teaching and coaching at Central HS in Phoenix. RAWDON TOWNSHIP ONTARIO HASTINGS SPRINGBROOK. Good. 1939. On offer is an interesting and rather charming original handwritten diary kept by a farm woman in Springbrook a tiny farming community in Hastings County Ontario during the initial years of WWII. Written in a simple school child's notebook the mostly pencil entries cover the period from May 1st 1939 until Oct 25 1941. The book is in good condition. There are 64 pages and it is 100 % complete. The entries are brief but give a clear look into life on an Ontario farm at the outset of the war. The long days and hard work are evident from virtually the first page. The part of Ontario where she lives is difficult farming country and life would have been hard. Yet despite the difficulties this woman had a solid circle of friends and family. These relationships come alive in the pages of this notebook. I mended set up hay. Ellen in a while. We baking July 11 1939 Russel Reed here drawing in hay. I painted bottoms shelf of cupboard chair bottoms and pump. July 15 1939. I washed Orris her husband started to cut his timothy hay south of barn well driller came again -struck rock this time July 17 1939 cider mill real busy. I swept house cleaned up . kids home - Teacher convention. Dug rest of potatoes on farm pulled beans Orris ground Ray's cider. I made pumpkin pies cakes. Went to town. Lois got her hat and sox etc Oct 7 1939 Our anniversary here at Springbrook. All went to church a.m and p.m. Mr. Wood is our minister Oct 29 1939 April Fools I washing and ironed piled wood Velma and I went to Hall for music concert April 1 1940 I cut potatoes - 3 bags. put more nuwall on upstairs ceiling. ready to paint floor now Apr 23 1940 Virtually all entries revolve around life on the farm and interactions with local people. She does note outside event such as when she simply stated on Sept 3rd War declared. Six months later she noted the arrest of a neighbour for the murder of another farm couple: Fred Thain confessed that he murdered Mr. and Mrs. Wellman. Feb 3rd. That entry is sandwiched between a comment about getting a letter and 2 loads of wood being drawn. On the 6th she noted she purchased some items from the murdered couple's home confirming that she lived in the vicinity Springbrook is about 6 miles away. For a researcher into gender studies or social history this is an outstanding look into the life of a farm wife in early 20th century Ontario. Her day begins early and continues through a non-stop succession of tasks and jobs until her day is done. C1915 ORIGINAL GROUP of DOCUMENTS PERTAINING to the MILITARY SERVICE of a LANCE CORPORAL in the 5TH BATTALION of the CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE 2ND BRIGADE A. K. a "TUXFORD'S DANDIES" WHO WAS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED and SPENT over a YEAR AT MILITARY HOSPITA
Good. 1936. On offer is a collection of 19 historically significant documents pertaining to military service of Herbert Arscott including a war-time photo a booklet with handwritten notes an active service pay book and post-war correspondence from the Board of Pension Commissioners for Canada. These documents represent milestones of his wartime experience and also of many Canadians fighting in the Great War. As the majority of Canadian soldiers at that time Herbert Arscott was born in Britain in the town of Wellington and enlisted almost immediately after the war was declared. He served at the 5th battalion of the 2nd infantry brigade hailed from western Canada and known as "Tuxford's Dandies" after the name of its first commander. Arscott made a few notes of dates and locations in a small book titled "Diary and memoranda": on September 17th he arrived at Quebec spent two days in smaller camps on the 22nd started training at Valcartier a training base for over 32000 volunteers from across Canada who were formed into the Canadian Expeditionary Force and eight days later boarded the SS Laplandia the largest in the transport convoy of the 31 ships set to cross the Atlantics. They arrived in Plymouth on October 14th and in early November he already was in Bailleul in Northern France which is the last note in the diary. The diary also contains a poem from George Cary Eggleston's "Rebel's collection" starting: "I was frightened for a wind crept along the grass
" Arscott's battalion entered the war theater in February 2015 participating in the Second Battle of Ypres from April 15th to May 25th it is not mentioned if Arscott was involved in that battle but the documents show that in the middle of May he was wounded. It is clear from his pay book and passes that he spent spring and summer of 1916 at the Granville Canadian Special Hospital in Ramsgate a seaside town in Kent a photograph showing him in a wheelchair most likely was taken in front of that hospital and then in Folkestone - a note on his pass says: "Recuperation. Excused wearing puttees" because of the leg wound. While in England he probably got married - in 1915 he named as his next of kin Mrs. Arscott C. N who lived in West Indies but later a line was added in his pay book with the name and address of his wife in Surrey. In 1918 he returned to Canada where he was taken to the Civil Service for six months but since 1920 all correspondence was addressed to the U. S. first to Brooklyn and later to Ohio. The post-war documents cover the period until 1952 and are related to his pension and insurance policy. The collection includes the following documents: 1. A red booklet titled "Diary and memoranda for 1914-1915: information relating to the wealth and population of the nations engaged and the strengths of their respective Armies and Navies Armaments etc. ; published by the Union Bank of Canada Valcartier Military Camp Branch. Contains hand-written notes. 31 pages size: 3'2x6'; condition: good 2. A booklet titled: Canadian Expeditionary Force 2nd infantry brigade headquarters and 5th Battalion : nominal roll of officers non-commissioned officers and men issued with militia orders 1915 25 p. size: 8'2x13'; condition: creases loose slight tears on the cover3. Pay book for use on active service containing records for 1915 - 1917. Size: 3.5'x5'' condition: good regular wear slight tears at edges4.3 passes dated May June and August 19165. A photo of a man in a wheelchair in front of what looks like a military hospital size: 3.2'x3.2' 6. Discharge certificate from Canadian Expeditionary Force slightly soiled at creases7. Certificate of qualification for temporary employment from Civil Service Commission of Canada dated October 25 1918. Condition: tears at creases slightly soiled size: 7.5'x11'8. A printed letter from the Board of Pension Commissioners for Canada in London on a letterheaded paper dated December 6 1918 containing 2 pages size: 8'x13'9. A printed letter addressed to Paymaster Casualties in Toronto dated August 31 1918 and signed by a representative of the Whitby Military Hospital condition: good size 6.5'x8'10. Adjustment of pension from the Board of Pension Commissioners for Canada and Authority for pension payment dated February 20th 1920 addressed to Mr. Herbert Arscott in Brooklyn N. 1900 Super Original Manuscript Recipe Book Compiled by a Noted 200 Year Old Now Defunct British Chemist Firm Specializing in Cordials and Spirits and American Style Soda Pop
BEDFORD UNITED KINGDOM. Good. 1900. On offer is a very interesting and unusual volume - a handwritten book of cordial wine cocktail and beer recipes from circa 1900 from a very old established Chemist firm in the UK. The BBC Good Food Guide calls cordials 'capturing the taste of summer' but whether it's capturing a taste or securing a winter's supply this book has it. The book is about 7 inches by 4 1/2 inched and contains 190 pages. It is about 50% complete. The recipes are generally quite legible and understandable. Taylor Brawn & Flood Co. Ltd were Chemists in Bedford UK about 60 miles north of London. The firm was established in 1780 and continued until 1984. This handwritten recipe book dates likely from the inter-war years - there is a letter enclosed dated May 20m 1943. They manufactured many different types of compounds and chemicals including soft drinks and cordials. It is quite likely that this recipe book was used in the manufacture of their products. Here are some of the recipes note there are abbreviations which are not explained: "Orange Champagne: 6 gal plain syrup 9 g ac Tart. Liq. 3 g D & S oranges 3 g aurantine soda 1/2 g Foam; Cream Soda: 4 gal plain syrup 2 g ac Tart. Liq. 4g American Cream Soda London Co 5/ lb no Foam See machine is clean and well washed out before and after use pipes and all; Ginger Wine: 115 Gal Sugar 2 cwt Phosph Citric Acit 2pts Burgoyne wine Caramel Liquid Pine Colour 3v Special Ginger Base C iv Glacial Acetic Acid 3v; Spanish Clay 1 lb Acid 11g". For the venturesome chef this is an explorer's delight. 1897 Original Manuscript Diary Handwritten by a Hard Working Hard Driving but Sickly Oklahoma Man Who Would One Day Publish a Noted Newspaper Only to End His Own Life in its Offices
OILTON GUEDA SPRINGS OKLAHOMA OK. Good. 1897. On offer is a fascinating late 19th Century manuscript Oklahoma diary handwritten mostly by Eli Admire as the ownership inscription states. Eli we believe was at the time of the writing 19 years old bio information to follow. We also believe that Eli's father or mother may also have contributed a few pages when the writing changes and there is a reference made to sending Eli someplace. Eli is an interesting but ill-fated fellow: a business person who writes of checking on his 'Sandpiper Farm' and bemoaning his shiftless renter; a pious person staying quiet at home and reading on the day of rest; a man plagued by illnesses complaining of swollen lymph glands and frequently going to the not too far away Gueda Springs which was known for its healing salt springs. We learn sadly that Eli ends his life very young and perhaps his health issues finally drove him to ultimate despair. Eli uses an 1896 book but writes of events in 1897. It doesn't start until August 16th but from that point Eli writes everyday and most of the pages in this page-a-day book are well filled. Here is a snippet: September 4 1897 - Rain - Cool "Did not rest well last night. Several things annoyed me and my mind was as vigilant as a soldier on picket. So have not felt well. I sometimes think I am undergoing a change of life." The cover is in really rough shape: tattered torn and part of it is missing. The inside pages are in surprisingly good condition. Overall G. 1905 Original Manuscript Diary of a Hardworking Ships Captain Plying His Ship Up and Down America's East Coast
ABOARD THE BARGE ALICE. Good. 1905. On offer is a fascinating original 1905 ship's log book of approximately 160 pages handwritten in pencil by Captain C.H. Bacon of the Barge "Alice." His loads are coal which he delivers to Hartford Naubuc Middletown Asylum Rocky Hill &c. By 1906 he is taking on water pipe at Elizabeth Port and Port Reading then delivering it to Newport Providence and New London. In October he goes back to hauling coal from New Jersey ports to Hartford Middletown Naubuc and Pawtucket. Laying up is delayed until Jan. 3 1907 and the work resumes in March &c. &c. Capt. Bacon hailed from Middletown Connecticut. His schooner the Hattie A. Butler is on the list of vessels lost or damaged in the catastrophic Portland Gale of November 1898 when she was in Vineyard Sound off Massachusetts. She was wrecked near Angelica Point Buzzards Bay Massachusetts with the loss of one crew member. Researchers and collectors of nautical manuscripts will have a treasure trove of details on the economics commerce and financials of a well worked commercial ship like the Alice. 1913 THROUGH 1917 HANDWRITTEN 5 YEAR LINE A DAY DIARY OF A CHARMING NEW HAMPSHIRE GIRL
Groveton New Hampshire. Very Good. On offer is a five year line-a-day diary that belonged to a Ruberta Smith of Groveton New Hampshire. Our diarist is obviously you and happy with many friends. She liked to go for drives to the movies church the library. She liked to dance make fudge and play the piano. Smith's diary seems to cover a time period where she was a student and then a teacher. Specifically she was a music teacher for the most part but then makes mention in later years of giving lectures and demonstrations on different levels of reading. She writes of school's end fireworks during the Fourth of July the fall colors storms Thanksgiving Hallowe'en dances and Christmas. She has filled about 75% of the diary mostly the early years and then in 1916 she becomes sporadic and in 1917 only a few dozen entries. What particularly endears the reader to Ruberta is a simple snippet from May of 1914: "Blessed if I can remember today". The condition of the diary is good. She has also made a memoranda with over 20 names and addresses of friends and relatives. After completing his education at Christ's College Cambridge he taught at Repton Derbyshire for two years and then took orders. Appointed curate of Norton-in-Hales Shropshire he became chaplain to the Hebraist Sir Rowland Cotton who urged him to study Hebrew and other Semitic languages. He accompanied Cotton when he removed to London and then became rector of Stone Staffordshire for about two years but in 1628 changed his residence to Hornsey Middlesex in order to be able to consult the rabbinical collections at Sion College London. During his residence at Hornsey he wrote his first work dedicated to Cotton and entitled Erubhin or Miscellanies Christian and Judaical penned for Recreation at vacant Hours London 1629. C1930s-50s COMPACT CHRISTOPHER MORLEY ARCHIVE and LIBRARY: ONE TLS ONE CLIPPING and 5 COLLECTIBLE VOLUMES

On offer is a super grouping of one 1 TLS typed letter signed one 1 ephemeral piece being a news-clipping and a compact library of five 5 books one signed others limited editions by the noted American journalist novelist essayist playwright and poet Christopher Morley. This is an ideal 'starter' archive or gift for a new Morley collector. Details: 1. Morley Christopher Typed Letter Signed. Written April 1 1953 a mere four years before his death in Roslyn Heights NY on Morley's letterhead with his New York City address hand-canceled in pencil. The letter to 'George' seemingly an old college and perhaps fraternity brother turning down his request for Morley's presence at an event. Some first names mentioned enticingly interesting but obscure. Many penciled corrections to the typescript mostly proofreader's marks by Morley and instances of his 'backing up' the carriage and typing over characters. Ends with the typed "Christopher Morley" hand-canceled and replaced by hand in pencil by "Chris." This is a chatty personal manuscript relic which collectors and researchers will happily note with fascination that he typed the letter yet could not leave it until he had corrected and personalized it. Tri-folded to fit in an envelope slight creasing at the left edge at one fold head corners slightly rolled slightly toned. Better than VG. 2. Morley Christopher newspaper clipping of Morley's column "The Bowling Green" from New York Evening Post November 10 1923. Twenty column inches of relentless satire and wit related to the "Transactions of the III Hours for Lunch Club." For example it opens with "It is recorded in the private minutes of the Three Hours for Lunch Club that the first stroke in the great campaign for Making New York and Philadelphia Love One Another was a plenary success. It is felt by the Club that the proud reticent yet inwardly tender and genteel bosom of the Oatmeal City was moved and stirred by the sudden foray of that daring band of kinspirits." Morley started this column in 1920 and it was a fixture in the Post for some time. Verso of the clipping extols the virtues of the Packard auto with its powerful "straight eight" engine. Clipping browned creased to fit into an envelope. VG. 3. Morley Christopher The Goldfish Under the Ice Elkin Mathews & Marrot 1929 Limited Edition Hardcover 8vo 8" - 9" tall 27 pp. VG/ VG. Offsetting next to hinge in the front and back offsetting and tiny foxing next to hinge on inside edge only of head and tail of covers. Scattered tiny very occasional foxing to pages. Dust jacket has slight wear at corners very slightly darkened at all edges. Price on inside front flap canceled in light ink. Morley's story the story of the Mistletoe family's dog Frisky the real Frisky owned by Louise Morley's daughter and the Mistletoe family replicating Morley's own family and his adventures on Christmas Eve. The Introduction tells that Morley asked Frisky what to write about and was told to write about "the goldfish." The book is divided into three parts: Part one about Frisky; Part two about the G. S. S. G. B. Go to Sleep as Soon as you Go to Bed club that the Mistletoes founded; Part three about Frisky building a fire on the ice to warm the the goldfish underneath. Who knew that a goldfish could shout Edition of 530 this being signed by Morley and number 44 of 500 for sale. Set in Monotype Veronese and printed by Robert MacLehose & Co. at the University Press Glasgow Scotland. This limited edition copyright 1929 but issued 1930 is actually "first thus" compared to the first appearance of the work in McCall's Magazine December 1928. Lee 172. Head of text block cut otherwise uncut with rough edges to pages endpapers slightly larger than text block. Tan illustrated paper on boards illustration matches the same on the dust jacket. Illustrated pastedowns and endpapers same graphic device as illustration on boards and DJ. Publisher Elkin Mathews and Marrot was known for publishing belles lettres and were accommodating with this work. This book being from the Woburn Books series of 18 short novels/novellas of 500 copies each for sale. A fun book from the ever-eclectic Morley VG in a VG dust jacket in mylar. 4. Morley Christopher Another Letter to Lord Chesterfield Ben Abramson 1945 1st Edition Booklet 16mo 6" - 7" tall 6 pp. F/ Spine tail very slightly bumped. Morley's satirical essay on the pleasure and need or smoking by the general public. Written and typeset in archaic English in the manner of a letter from Samuel Johnson. In fact the title page indicates authorship by Samuel Johnson and Christopher Morley which of course is impossible given the 'letter's' date of February 7 1945. Pages numbered 3 through 6 though the essay consists of only 4 printed pages. Wraps formed by a single sheet of textured stiff brown paper folded in quarters saddle stapled to the inside crease with no staples showing at the spine head edge trimmed else uncut. Silhouette presumably of Johnson to front cover. Stated first edition. Printed "for" Ben Abramson at the Argus Bookshop his own shop famed for Morley-ana and promotion of Steinbeck's early work. The date of 1945 locates the place of publishing as New York where he resumed business after moving there from Chicago. This copy absolutely clean and Near Fine condition. 5. Morley Christopher Friends Romans. The Ampersand Club 1940 Limited Edition Hardcover Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall VG/ VG Book is sun-faded at the very edge of the spine tail and more so at the spine head. Dust jacket darkened along the spine tiny chips to head and tail of spine 1 1/2" closed tear from the spine tail proceeding up the front cover small light blue mark to front. Christopher Morley's speech at the 50th anniversary of the Minneapolis Public Library and the 5th anniversary of Morley's membership in The Ampersand Club he being the one who suggested the name of the club devoted to printing and the art of the book. The first publication of The Ampersand Club and this one being one of an edition of 535 copies. A rambling discourse on life but somehow tied together with a topical thread of books and the library. Author is well known for his books Parnassus on Wheels and The Haunted Book Shop along with dozens of other Printed devices in read at the head of each beginning chapter page. In thin blue cloth on boards title in printed panel to front printed panel to spine. Sharp corners clean. Conservatively Very Good condition and approaches Very Good . A still-attractive Very Good DJ in mylar. 6. Morley Christopher The Haunted Bookshop Doubleday Page & Company 1921 Hardcover 12mo 7" - 7½" tall 289 pp. VG/ Gilt dulled on spine head and tall of spine slightly rubbed. A bit of faintly-browned offsetting to pastedowns and endpapers. The follow-up novel to Morley's "Parnassus On Wheels." After settling down Helen McGill now Helen Mifflin and Roger Mifflin open the bookshop Parnassus At Home which of course is the haunted bookshop. Intrigue and mystery ensue along with books danger a dog and quirky protagonists. Red cloth on boards with gilt title to spine and Morley's initials to front cover. This title from Doubleday's uniform edition in 12mo. 19211918. A clean nice conservatively VG copy. 7. Morley Christopher Parnassus On Wheels Doubleday Page & Company 1921 Hardcover 12mo 7" - 7½" tall 190 pp. VG/ Gilt dulled on spine head and tall of spine slightly rubbed. A bit of faintly-browned offsetting to pastedowns and endpapers. Morley's first novel about Helen McGill who strikes out on her own after buying a traveling bookstore in a wagon from Roger Mifflin. Told in the first person by Helen it's her adventure in independence idealism and literature. Charming and I usually avoid the word but charming in a good way. A humorous fast read that's the precursor to Morley's "The Haunted Bookshop." Red cloth on boards with gilt title to spine and Morley's initials to front cover. This title from Doubleday's uniform edition in 12mo. 19211917.
