Sunned bumped and worn spine has blue cloth Dewey label. Corners are lightly bumped and lightly worn. The pages are fragile and brittle. The top corners of pages 55-62 and 245 are chipped with some loss of text. Pages 67 89 91 95-100 205 and 287-290 are chipped at top corner pages 235 and 332 are chipped on page edge; the top corner of pages 114 and 175 are detached and laid in and the corner of page 175 has a small stain. Pages 15 81 103-106 115 129-143 153/158 177 181 189-191 201 and 331 have tears of varying sizes. Seven pages are mended with tape which has darkened and in some cases stained the abutting page. One of the signatures groups of bound pages for pages 245-284 has a broken top stitch. We also noted several tiny check or ticks marks in the text. ‎Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan 1857. Prose Writers of America was first published in 1847 this is the 4th and last edition. And was specifically designed to compete with a similar anthology by Cornelius Mathews and Evert Augustus Duyckinck. Editor/author Rufus Wilmot Griswold was an influential editor but less than civil and scrupulous he outed Walt Whitman although apparently it took one to know one and is perhaps best remembered today for defaming Egdar Allan Poe even becoming Poe's literary executor under less than ethical circumstances. This volume was one of his last works a piece of somewhat controversial literary history. Green cloth with decorative gilt on front and back covers and spine. Bevelled edges. Soil to covers; chipping and wear to head and heel of spine wear to corners edgewear. Interesting cover with a cameo-like circular cut out both front and back covers with gilt floral inet. Pencilled price on fep. Frontispiece of Washington Irving. Some foxing to frontispiece title pages about the first few pages of the book and the last several. 552 toned pages with double borders. We noted two previously folded page corners a pencilled x on the margin of the first contents page and a wrinkle on contents page. Sewn binding with slightly weak endpapers. Gilt stain all around is a bit dull. The type size for this volume is on the small size about 8 points is our guess. There are 13 black and white illustrations on glossy stock. 427 toned pages. Gilt top gilt titles on spine and cover and gilt fish on front cover illustration. Fisherman's Luck is a collection of essays. Henry Van Dyke 1852 - 1933 was an author college professor clergyman and United States diplomat. Professor of English Literature at Princeton University for more than 20 years Van Dyke's own writings often express religious themes. He was involved in the production of the Presbyterian Book of Common Worship of 1906 and wrote the lyrics to the hymn Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee. From 1913-1916 Van Dyke served President Woodrow Wilson as minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Edgewear bumped corners and head and heel of spine worn bottom corner. Front hinge is cracked and back hinge is starting. First signature is separate about three inches from bottom up. Crease to back cover some tiny holes on spine. Two small areas of soil on front cover and three on spine. Pages 97 has what appears to be a pencil mark on the top and bottom margins and the tissue over the frontispiece is worn. Name on fep. Pasted to the inside cover is the bookplate of Louis Agassiz Shaw co-inventor along with Philip Drinker of the iron lung in 1928. 394 lightly tanned pages followed by several pages of publisher advertisements. Some rubbing wear to maroon cover. We noted some red pencil marks to equations on page 175. Some mild foxing to endpapers. A poor quality rubber cement repair has been made to inside cover and title page so residue is visible on the seams of those pages and title page does not open flat. Shaw bookplate has caused a darkened area the shape of the bookplate paste residue on bookplate. Small green stamp on fep penciled price penciled price on page v. Rubber cement residue on inside seem of back cover. Small blemish on back cover.
