‎CHARLESTON BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS. Very Good. 1869. On offer is a fascinating original post Civil War 1869 manuscript diary handwritten by Anna Wright Hooker filled with entries revealing a keystone year in this Boston woman's life. The year finds Anna and her family headed by her important doctor-husband Anson Hooker at the top of the Boston social scene: she and her husband socialized very frequently going into Boston almost daily. They attended the famous Peace Jubilee in Boston that summer for instance. Dr Hooker was always out tending to people it seemed sometimes in the middle of the night. He stayed with a suicide victim for two days and Anna recorded the sadness of the event a "broken heart" made him shoot himself in the head. The man had botched the attempt. Anna also visited friends often and were friends with the Hales and Bulfinches upper crust Boston families of great regard. There were upper middle class to wealthy people though Anna lived a rather humble life choosing to take on the majority of the chores herself primarily because of her young son. Neddie or Edward also became a famous Boston doctor. In April though the situation changed. Her daughter Martha was taken ill with some kind of rheumatism which left her bedridden and in great pain for weeks. Only opiates eased her pain. About that time also her husband's health began to fail. He first complained of a "lame arm" and began to also have pains and fatigue. He had always been quite strong going out on as many as 4 calls a day everything was a house call then for doctors. But around May he began to show marked signs of failing health Anna's horror and dismay is clearly recorded as she watched helpless as her husband's condition progressed from bad to worse. By autumn Dr Hooker could barely get out of bed. He died in early November and his funeral was attended by hundreds of people. He was after all one of the best known and well regarded Bostonians. All of this is recorded faithfully no matter what Anna's mood. BIO NOTES: Anna Wright 1813-1891 was descended from a Massachusetts Bay Colony Pilgrim family as was her husband Dr Anson Hooker 1799-1869. They married in 1834 and settled in Charlestown Massachusetts where Anson became a very prominent doctor and an alderman for the town among other things. He practiced medicine in Charlestown for 45 years and they had three children one of whom at the writing of this was only 8 years old Edward Dwight Hooker; 1858-1911. This would make Anna quite old at the time to bear a child as she was in her late 40s. She calls him Neddie and he is mentioned every day as Anna stays at home to care for him while her husband is out on calls. She had three siblings Luther Martha and William. Martha married Edmund Boynton. These people figure prominently in the diary being all very close in proximity and visiting their mother Anna's large townhouse in Charlestown extremely often. Hers was a busy life with the day's chores generally being mending she received a Singer Sewing machine in February and raves about it throughout cooking and cleaning as well as tending to Neddie. ‎Boston Massachusetts MA Nova Scotia NS. Very Good. 1931. Leather. On offer is a charming piece of Depression Era Americana being a handwritten manuscript 5-year diary authored by Jean Coleman a young girl of 13 in 8th grade and following her into womanhood and her first semester of college. There are a number of interesting parts to this young girl's life and while this is a Depression Era diary the depression has no effect on her family when it comes to comings and goings. She has diligently filled the diary with a near obsessive quality only missing a few days in 1935. The diary bears out that she's an unusual charming girl from a loving and supporting extended family. Jean lived in the Boston Massachusetts and with relatives in Canada and the many long family visits there makes for a fair bit of Canadiana in this journal. An active good student she records what she studied that day. She was also very active belonging to girl scouts attending Red Cross training taking art and music classes playing tennis skiing skating swimming hiking going to numerous movies and plays spending time in libraries and museums acting in school productions attending dances and the like. She also aspired to be a writer something she refers to at age 13 and at age 18. Here are snippets: 1931: 5/25--Went to school. Came home at 11:30 because 600 aeroplanes came. 7/4--Horrible parade! Mock Marriage. Side shows. Circus. Big show in evening. Watched rockets! 9/1--I wrote my first short novel. 9/16--Went to school. Came home. Studied. What else is there to do 1932: 3/10--It is too bad that it should be Aunty Edna & Laura & Uncle Sandy got in today. Went to hospital. Grandma died at about two o'clock. It is awful. 3/11--Oh it is awful. Went in town with Aunty Edna and Aunty Ida. Went to Grandma's. Walked home. Went to see Grandma. She is beautiful. All the Aunties left for St. John with her the family is from St. John New Brunswick. 3/13--My Birthday. I wish it wasn't. Grandma buried today. 5/8--I cut my finger. 5/9--Stayed home from school because of finger but went to leather class. Made pocketbook. 5/10--Went to school. Did not miss much I must say. 6/13 feeling some adolescent angst--Went to school per usual. Came home per usual. Didn't see anyone per usual. 7/12--Fainted at lunch so could not go to Aunt Edna's. Went to Orangemen's picnic and saw parachute jump in evening. 8/31--Saw eclipse. Real exciting. 9/24--Went to baseball game Friday afternoon. Babe Ruth. 10/18--Went to school. Came home. Did nothing as usual except the us 1933: 1/7--Went to Fortune Tellers. 1/10--My the snow is grand! Walked to store in snow. Rolled back. 2/2--The mid exam was long but easy. I studied all evening. Hearing the usual stroke of twelve and making mother sleep with me. 4/2--Took snaps snapshots in the afternoon. Had photos taken in evening. 4/8--Went with 6 scouts to Westin to Miss Dixon's Cabin to pass Pioneer test. Did we work or did we work 5/7--Studied like nobody's business. 5/12--Went to school. Came home to find that Grace was coming up. My four leaf clover worked. O Baby! 6/5--Went to school. Came home. Practiced. Wrote diary. Heat heat terrible heat. Wrote diary. 8/11--Saw star shower. My it was exciting. 8/24--Went to town. Babe and I had fortunes told. 9/11--Went to school for first time. All the hullabaloo & baloney over. Studied late. 1934: 3/13 Jean's 17th birthday--Went to school. Came home. Gee I'm old. 7/22--Started out for walk in the morning. Went to Eastern Lake. Skirted beaver pond. Crossed Dead Creek. Saw skeleton of a moose. 10/4--Went to school. Came home. Always plenty to do in study line. 10/23--Tried to do some of Thursday's homework. Too excited about tomorrow. 10/24--Did not go to school. Went to Statler Hotel with bunch. Met Mrs. Roosevelt and Mrs. Hoover dinner was in honor of Hoover. 11/27--Went to school. Came home. Mailed letters. Studied. Wrote story. 1935: 1/24--16 inches of snow. I never saw so much. No school. Sid & dad could not get car out. 2/2--Went to play rehearsal. Fell down library stairs. Stiff neck. 3/6--Went to school and then to scouts. Those kids are nuts. 3/20--Went to school and then to scouts. Came home. Those kids are the limit. 4/6--Dad went looking for cars. I went to museum. Came home. Dad bought car. Cute blue Plymouth Coupe rumble seat cream wheels. 4/6--Dad brought car. She's sweet. We dusted her off. Too bad she had to stand in rain. 5/18--Left for Albany at 10:30. Saw bus of midgets. Beautiful drive. Up 2200 feet. 7/21--Cleaned car in morning. More hindrance than help to Daddy. 9/8--Walked over point. Took pictures. Got chased by cow. Let cow loose. 9/11--Went to college to register. 9/14--Had lecture and intelligence test. 9/15--Discovered that someone tried to steal our car. Broke locks. 10/16--Went to school. Had interview with Mrs. Mallock. She thinks if I develop I may be a find in writing something. Boy! 10/20--Wrote story. 11/9--Left at 10:30 a.m. for Canada. Drove steadily. Saw many deer on cars of hunters. In the memorandum section at the back of the diary Jean wrote four longer passages one each commemorating her grandmother and grandfather she died in 1932 he in 1935 and two passages about what the fortune teller told her on two different occasions. ‎1937 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT BY OWEN RUTTER - THE ATLANTIC CROSSED BY STEAM‎

‎1937. An original manuscript entitled "The Atlantic Crossed by Steam" 5000 words dated 5-6 December 1937 written over 14 foolscap sized roughly 12 1/2 by 7 1/2 inches pages signed on the title page first page and last page by Owen Rutter Anglo-Malay Colonial Administrator and an orientalist of some repute. The steamship SS Great Western named for the Great Western Railway Company was the first steamship purposely built for the Atlantic crossing. It was an iron-strapped wooden side-wheel paddle steamer with auxiliary sails designed by the great railway engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel whose idea it was that steam would replace sail power on the regularly-scheduled trans-Atlantic "packet boat" services which had been operating under sail since 1818. He convinced the directors of the Great Western Railway. Though the Great Western's huge boilers took up almost half its interior the ship was designed to carry 148 passengers with a main passenger saloon 75 feet long by 34 feet at its widest. The Great Western displaced 2340 tons. Twenty-four first-class passengers paid 35 guineas each for the maiden trip more than many working class people then earned in a year. Adding to the value of the trip on its maiden run the Great Western raced the SS Sirius to New York though the Sirius had left Cork Ireland days earlier on April 4. The Great Western left Bristol England on April 8 1838. The rival British and American Steam Navigation Company expected to open the first steam-powered regularly-scheduled "packet" trans-Atlantic service with their SS British Queen. But with their ship still at the shipyard it became clear at the opening of the season that the Great Western which had already been launched and was being fitted out with its machinery in London was going to beat them to it. So they chartered the Sirius which was a cross-Channel steamship. Though the Sirius beat the Great Western to New York arriving on April 22 with forty passengers they had to burn the cabin furniture spare yards and one mast to do it inspiring the similar sequence in Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days 1872. The Great Western arrived the following day with 200 tons of coal still aboard and after only 15 days at sea. Great Western was subsequently awarded the Blue Riband for setting the record for trans-Atlantic travel speed at 8.66 knots beating Sirius which clocked in at 8.03 knots. The Great Western served in the trans-Atlantic run until 1846. Later after serving as a troopship in the Crimean War she was broken up in a salvage yard on the lower reaches of the Thames in 1856. Born in 1889 Rutter joined the North Borneo Company service in 1910 as a cadet. He was first attached to the West Coast Residency. Except for a few months in 1912 when he was the assistant district officer for Tawau Rutter spent most of his five years of service on the west coast of Sabah. He finally rose to the position of district officer in 1913 leaving the service in 1915 to return to Europe to serve with the British Army during World War I. Demobilised after the war with the rank of major Rutter returned to Sabah and spent 18 months as a planter and traveller. Upon returning to Britain he became an academician and writer. He died in 1944. Rutter was a prolific writer. His books dwelt on subjects of the East ranging from legends of Sabah to a biography of Sarawak’s Rajah James Brooke. Two of his books British North Borneo: an Account of its History Resources and Native Tribes 1922 and The Pagans of North Borneo 1929 remained classic texts on Sabah for many years. British North Borneo was published in the same year as Evans’ Among Primitive People but was better received in North Borneo Company circles for its uncontroversial contents. It served as the standard reference on Sabah until the publication of K.G. Tregonning’s A History of Modern Sabah 1963. The Pagans of North Borneo provides systematic insights into the lives of the various non-Muslim tribes in Sabah not confined to only the people of Tuaran and Tempassuk as in the case of Evans’ book. Rutter carried out extensive research for The Pagans of North Borneo drawing on materials and information from other North Borneo Company officials notably F.W. Fraser the long serving government secretary who had spent some years in Tambunan and Keningau and Woolley. Even though there are now some gaps in Rutter’s presentation on the non-Muslim indigenous people it is still regarded as a major contribution to the study of ethnography in Sabah. On offer is an original inscribed copy of Lucretia the Quakeress: or Principle triumphant by Phebe Anne Hanaford the first woman minister in the Universalist Church and likely America's earliest certifiable lesbian minister. This very rare book is very significant in Amerca's Women's Rights movement and notaby for being written by the author of the first biography of Lincoln after his death. This book besides being very very scarce is inscribed on the front flyleaf: "Sarah Barker Wilt thou accept this little book form its author with an earnest wish for thy abundant happiness in the new relation thou art about to enter and heartfelt gratitude to thee for the introduction to that model Quakeress and lovely woman Sybil Jones. Affectionately Phebe Anne Hanaford Nantucket Nov 1856." An important association copy that reveals how Hanaford met Sybil Jones. A number of online references are provided: "Lucretia the Quakeress 1853 was an antislavery tract inspired by her Nantucket cousin the famous abolitionist and Quaker Lucretia Coffin Mott. Hanaford's Life of Abraham Lincoln 1865 was the first biography of the president published after his assassination and it sold an impressive 20000 copies." Ref: Lisa M. Tetrault "A Paper Trail: Piecing Together the Life of Phebe Hanaford" Another: "In the first decade of the twentieth century Phebe Hanaford was asked to help officiate at the funeral services for two leading women's rights activists of the nineteenth century: the feminist philosopher Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the woman-suffrage organizer Susan B. Anthony. The two friends who had shared a life of labor died within four years of each other and Hanaford knew them both well. One of the nation's first female ministers an author feminist and Nantucket native Hanaford was intimately involved in the early women's rights campaign for nearly the entire span of the seventy-five-year movement. " Tetrault And: "Phebe Ann Coffin Hanaford may be America's earliest certifiable lesbian minister. Hanaford had begun living with a woman named Ellen Miles. Newspaper clippings preserved in Hanaford's scrapbook reported that the disgruntlement among congregation members was in fact over Hanaford's liaison with Miles whom the papers called the 'minister's wife.' Hanaford it seems was not simply asked to cease her women's rights activities but more specifically to 'dismiss' Miss Miles. their letters testify to a deep and abiding affection. The two remained life-long companions separated after forty-four years together only by Miles's death in 1914." Tetrault And regarding Sybil Jones: "Eli Jones 1807-1890 of China Maine married Sybil Jones 1808-1873. As Quaker ministers they went to Liberia in 1851 later traveling to various countries in Europe including England Ireland France Norway and Germany. Sybil Jones worked in Washington area hospitals during the Civil War ministering to the wounded. She was in the Capitol when Lincoln was assassinated and paid visits to Lincoln's widow and to Secretary Stanton at the White House in the days immediately following.
