‎1882 - 1883: 18 ORIGINAL HAND DRAWN AND BEAUTIFUL NAUTICAL CHARTS INTENDED TO TEACH THE SCIENCE OF NAVIGATION TO A YOUNG CADET AT THE BRITANNIA ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGE IN DARTMOUTH ENGLAND‎

‎BRITANNIA ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGE DARTMOUTH ENGLAND. Very Good. 1882. On offer are 18 beautiful and fascinating hand drawn naval charts done on the H.M.S. Britannia in 1882 and 1883. The H.M.S. Britannia was initially called the H.M.S. Prince of Wales and was originally one of six 121-gun screw-propelled first-rate three-decker line-of-battle ships of the Royal Navy. In 1869 she was renamed the H.M.S. Brittania and under that name served at Dartmouth as a cadet training ship until 1905. As Britannia she was a hulk and only had her foremast. The drawings were done by a man named H.W. Armstrong. Research shows that he had only recently graduated out of Stubbington House School a boys' preparatory school known as “the cradle of the Navy". He became a Cadet with the Britannia Royal Naval College BRNC commonly known as Dartmouth and it was here that he joined the ‘Brittania’ and drew these charts. The charts are all similar in a few respects. Each one contains an area near the top of the page with information on latitude longitude and scale and later the ‘compass bearing of ship’ and the ‘true bearing of Rock’. Below this is an expertly drawn rectangle with latitudes longitudes and occasionally geographic depictions of lands and islands in which the boat’s location is tracked on the chart. Always in this rectangle is an unlabelled compass rose. The charts look seemingly like they were drawn as answers to questions being asked in training. The first 6 charts from August 16 to December 7th 1882 shows only a dead center compass rose. Seemingly Armstrong was supposed to put the location of the boat in between two latitudes and longitudes and according to a scale of “1.2 inches to a deg. of Long.” For all the charts after December 7th it looks as if there is an external source giving him a question to which his answers are written down and drawn in the chart. For example in ‘Chart O’ the text box reads: “Ansr I. Latitude 54° 28’ S. Longitude 140° 18’ W. Ansr II. Comp: bear’g on Ship S85°30’W. Dist: 78 miles. Ansr III. True bearing of Rock S66°56’15’’E” On the chart are drawn various lines between various points including Dead Reckoning the rock in question a port an island and more all that correspond to the answers given. As the dates go on it seems the questions get more difficult as the answers given and the chart drawn start incorporating things such as currents drift and obstacles and the lines drawn in the charts begin to increase and look increasingly complex. The last chart is done on November 6th 1883. No two charts are the same so there are 18 unique and fascinating hand drawn items in this fantastic collection. The naval charts are in very good condition. They are unbound. Many have small imperfections such as a small smudges and some dirt residues but there aren’t any that could be considered in less than very good condition. This is a very interesting and visually pleasing collection a look at a fascinating aspect of what was needed in order to become an officer in the British Royal Navy. Background HMS Prince of Wales was one of six 121-gun screw-propelled first-rate three-decker line-of-battle ships of the Royal Navy. She was launched on 25 January 1860. In 1869 she was renamed HMS Britannia and under that name served at Dartmouth as a cadet training ship until 1905. In 1867 the Prince of Wales's engines were removed so they could be installed in the ironclad Repulse. In 1869 she was renamed Britannia and began service as a cadet training ship at Dartmouth replacing the previous Britannia in that role. As Britannia she was a hulk and only had her foremast. Among those starting their naval careers on her were in 1877 the future Admiral and First Sea Lord Rosslyn Wemyss Prince Albert Victor and his younger brother the future King George V. A shore-based college at Dartmouth was opened in September 1905 and this was named Royal Naval College Dartmouth. The Britannia training establishment was closed at the same time. On offer is a super original 1883 manuscript relic of education being handwritten lecture notes journal of Dr. Marshall Henshaw former physics professor of Amherst College. The notebook is packed full of notes by Dr. Henshaw and may very well have been a pre-publication manuscript with each section beginning with the number and date of the lecture followed by a title of the section based on the information contained. Lectures seem to average about 4 pages each. The last two pages are the start of an appendix. ‎Very Good. 1959. Manuscript. AUDOUIN DOLLFUS - French Physicist/Astronomer/Discoverer. In 1950 it was thought the planet Mercury because of its small size had probably lost its atmosphere through the escape of the molecules into space. Dollfus announced that he had detected a very faint atmosphere from polarization measurements carried out at the Pic-du-Midi Observatory in the French Pyrenees. He also investigated the possibility of an atmosphere around the Moon. The rate of thermal dissipation into space of all but the heavier gases which are cosmically very scarce from the Moon is so high that an atmosphere cannot be expected.In 1966 Dollfus discovered JANUS the innermost moon of Saturn at a time when the rings to which it is very close were seen edge on from Earth and practically invisible. SIGNED printed picture of him as an Aeronaut in a balloon with ANS on verso identifies the photo as to when Dollfus using 105 balloons ascended to 42000 feet for several hours to observe Mars and the Moon. On offer is a remarkable compilation of personal letters cards photos correspondence and ephemera items from US Navy World War I veteran Commander of the American Legion and Goodwill Ambassador Oliver H. Barre comprising 2 binders filled with fascinating historical dating from the 1950s to the 1980s. After Commander Barre was honorably discharged he spent much of his time writing letters of thanks condolence encouragement and more to a variety of important powerful men working as a goodwill ambassador as is evidenced in his photographs. The letters in this collection include some that Barre wrote himself but the majority that are in response to his letters. All photos and letters have been labeled and described in detail telling who is in them the date and the event. Barre made many many international friends and seemed to be of particular closeness to the Royal families of Jordan and Saudi Arabia. There are numerous autographs of the Royals their personal secretaries etc. etc. We even noted a letter from Madame Chiang Kai-shek. Here is a partial breakdown: Veteran's Administration; The White House of Presidents Nixon and Carter wherein he was thanked by their staff for his goodwill work; Chester E Beaman; The Department of State; Jordan Amman The Royal Palace many letters and photographs meeting him at the time of his son's birth; Private Secretary to His Majesty The King Grand Palace Bangkok; Veteran's Hospital New York City; Barre wrote a poem for the new Prince son of Jordan Amman and is photographed giving a gift to Amman for his son on behalf of The President of The United States; USS Triton; United Nations; National Aeronautics and Space Administration; Department of the Navy; Republic of China Office of the President; Director of the President's Office Cairo; Pope John Paul II; Christmas photo from American Consulate Chester E. Beaman dated 1959; photos of Barre bringing a wheelchair to a polio victim in the Middle East; photos of Barre as a Submarine Service Torpedoman in World War I; 1946 photo of Barre in the New York Times Commander of the American Legion of New York County; personal letter and family photograph from His Majesty King Hussein and Family; signed photo of W.F. Halsey. Besides his lifetime of good works and goodwill in Barre's life towards the end of his life he was most recently in the news in June of 1990 when at the age of 95 he was accused of bludgeoning his 88 year old widowed neighbor and friend to death with an iron bar. In July about 4 weeks after he was accused he was struck and killed by a bus while walking to the veteran's hospital in New York City. ‎DUNBARTON MANCHESTER NEW HAMPSHIRE NH. Very Good. 1899. On offer is the original manuscript diary a distinguished New Hampshire resident. While he does not identify himself there are many many clues for local historians and collectors to assuredly discover the writer's identity. He is very involved in state politics and demonstrates familiarity with high level state officials. Perhaps he was a member of the state legislature. The author also buys and sells livestock own a store and has some business in Manchester. He usually notes that he goes to the store in the morning and to Manchester in the afternoon. He doesn't mention where he lives but does note that he paid taxes in Dunbarton and Goffstown. He also wrote of attending "Old Home Week" in Dunbarton. Other entries note his work in appraising estates attending a stockholder meeting and the annual meeting of the Merchants Bank buying stock auditing the selective accounts at Town Hall. At one of the meetings of the State Bank he notes: Sept 6 Went to Concord to attend meeting of the State Bank. Met Col Rice of the 26th Regiment who has returned from Manila. HISTORICAL NOTE: In 1899 Col. Rice was appointed by President McKinley to be Senior Colonel of all US Volunteers in the Philippines. He commanded the 26th US Infantry a New England Regiment. Here are more snippets: Jan 5 Went to Concord to witness the inauguration of Gov Rollins. Mar 9 Went to Concord for the day to attend the legislature. Mar 14 Attended Town Meeting. Republicans successfully electing every officer. Apr 29 In the afternoon went to Manchester to attend the funeral of Ex-Governor Smyth. In addition there are several entries about his attending meetings of the State Board of Equalization as well as meetings of the State Bank. He writes: Sept 26 Went to Concord and finished our work taxing railroads. The author also travels. In August he takes a trip to Hampton Beach. In October he travels to Boston to see Admiral Dewey. Throughout the diary the author writes of the many funerals he attends of NH citizens. One was a double funeral for a brother and sister another was for a woman who committed suicide by drowning herself. Sometimes he would appraise their estates. Oct 14.Went to Boston with Appleton to see Dewey. We had a fine place to see the parade which was very fine. Oct 15.Went to Boston again to see the decorations. They were beautiful. On offer is a super original relic of the Civil Rights era and the real bitterness and rage felt by some if not many on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement being the personal copy of the 128 page manifesto-autobiography 'Here I Stand' by Paul Robeson published in 1958 by Othello Associates New York owned annotated and underlined throughout by Wesley A. Williams 1897 - 1984. The target of lifelong racism as the third African-American man ever to join in 1919 the New York Fire Service Williams' ownership signature and despairing annotations fill the book from the front pastedown on: almost every page bears Williams' underlining but it is his commentary as it responds to Robeson's text which is revealing and intensely moving. The pages are stained with his holographic bitterness: he writes regarding the chapter 'Love will find out the way' in the aftermath of the assassination of President Kennedy Williams' comments: 'This Paul is your dream. Today I dream no more as I have lived my 66 years against this brutal white American who lives and dies on the blood of all people. A people who assassinate a good man like their President Kennedy - Kill coloured Sunday school children. Will stop at Nothing. They respect nothing but Force.' Underneath Robeson's suggestion that 'We must wait we are told until the hearts of those who persecute us have softened' Williams has jotted: 'That would be Never'. HISTORICAL NOTES: Wesley Williams joined the New York City Fire Department in 1919 and on the same day the Captain of the Engine Company retired and every other man requested reassignment. ‎New Hampshire/Massachusetts. Very Good. 1916. On offer is the handwritten diary of Alice M. Preston during the year 1916. We are not certain as to the town Alice lives in but we believe it is either in Massachusetts or New Hampshire because she mentions the following places; Peabody Windham White Plains Salem Laconia Danvers Northfield Jackson Beverly Plattsburg Ashfield and Nashua. Alice is a schoolteacher and a fairly dedicated diarist and this diary is over two thirds full having over 250 entries with many very interesting and historical entries. Here are some snippets: "Still warm. Ice nearly all gone from ponds. Grace Noble came to teach grade 3. Parliament buildings in Ottawa blown up by German bomb. Big blizzard. Began about 2. A howler. Home at 4:10. Struggled up home in the teeth of it a fearful night…. Walls and fences covered. Went to 8:20 car on my snowshoes. Men could hardly keep the road open. Home at 4:20. Walked up on snowshoes. Parent’s day at school. Had 4 in the morning and 12 or 15 in the p.m. Pupils lovely. School again. Cool and clear. Miss Sergeant wearing her diamond. Went to ride with Ruth after tea. washed my hair. Sewed in the p.m. Mrs. Edwin Appleton died very suddenly at 10 o'clock. Heart failure. Mother and I went up to Mrs. Drury’s after tea. Foster left for Plattsburgh for a month of soldiering. Flag Day. Big parade in Salem. Clear in the p.m. but rainy in the evening. Strawberry festivals. Everything all war excitement. Boys went to Framingham…. A trifle warmer. Professors and teachers had our supper at Hospital Point. Ruth brought me home later. Militia left for Mexico…. Yellow day caused by forest fires in Canada. ‎OAHU HAWAII GUAM MARIANNES ISLANDS. Very Good. 1917. On offer is the original 1917 manuscript diary handwritten by Mrs. France B. Burgess who was married to Dr. Paul Burgess. We believe he was a chemist or other scientist as opposed to a medical doctor. They are a rather young couple she being 23 years old and they enjoy their 3rd anniversary while writing this book. Collectors and historians of Hawaii and the World War I era will find a unique diary on a number of levels being one part home front diary another part detailing life in Hawaii and lastly a major train travel diary as they embark on a round trip cross country trip to Paul's family in the Northeast USA. They live on the island of Oahu Hawaii and we suspect he worked for Pacific Guano & Fertilizer Co. making some trips to the lab and attending the 'chem' party. The diary is a premium leather fold over style diary with gilt stamp of the company. The book was created it appears to celebrate the company's recent awards. Our author details a charming life of some work mostly charitable and some personal as Frances does a lot of sewing and working with clothing. She teaches dancing at St. Elizabeth's to children and she volunteers or does some works with the Red Cross. The diary mentions things like seeing eclipses going for "machine"car rides picnics on the beaches trips to the Outriggers Canoe Club they go to a carnival see an ocean liner come in leave on an ocean liner even in paradise the first World War looms: they see a captured German ship being towed. Collectors and historians of the era will note an interesting trip from west to east as they make trip by train across the U.S. to see Paul's relatives in the Providence/Greenville Rhode Island area return home and see Charlie Chaplin. There are some neat entries in the back of the diary like: a list of books read in 1917; a few recipes; a list of "Gifts to Take East" when they went to Rhode Island. Some of the gifts included: Japanese tea set tiny Outrigger Canoe & hula girl Japanese Umbrella. There is also a list of people she sent Christmas Cards to. Her cash accounts are loaded with items they spent money on. There is a list of the expenditures it cost them to take their trip to the United States in May; and amount for their "Eats Coming West" on their way back. ‎1861-1863 Archive of Five Civil War-Era Manuscript Letters Relating to the Robust US Banking System Army Units Debts Corporate Elections‎

‎United States: Civil War America Bank of America 115th Ohio Infantry. Very Good. 1861-1863. Non-Book. On offer is a unique collection of five letters that detail several financial transactions during the American Civil War. The first letter details a financial transaction between one J. C. Anderson and a Mr. D. McLaren. McLaren is identified further on in the note as "Brigadier of the 115th Ohio Volunteers". The 115th Ohio Infantry was organized Massillon Ohio and mustered in September 18 1862 for three years service under the command of Colonel Jackson A. Lucy. After being raised they were moved to Cincinnati Ohio. They were assigned to duty by detachments as provost guard and guarding forts arsenals store houses and magazines at Camp Chase Camp Dennison Maysville Covington and Newport Kentucky and Cincinnati Ohio until October 1863. They were then ordered to Chattanooga TN then to Murfreesboro TN. They were stationed at Murfreesboro and along line of the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad in block houses and at bridges until June 1865. The Regiment was specially selected for this arduous duty because of the great number of skilled mechanics and artisans in its ranks. They were involved in actions at Cripple Creek Woodbury Pike the siege of Murfreesboro "The Cedars" and Lavergne. The Regiment was mustered out of service June 23 1865 at Murfreesboro TN. The letter drafted in Carlisle PA on May 6 1861 is addressed to a D. McLaren. In the salutation he is referred to as Superintendent but further down the letter he is addressed as Brigadier D. McLaren of the 115th Ohio Volunteers. Our research has not turned up anyone of that name who served in that rank in the 115th Ohio Volunteers. The letter requests the transfer of $300.00. The second letter is addressed to a Mr. F. H. Short and was drafted June 5th 1862. It was written by a Mr. S. R. Drury. The letter concerns an apparent debt that is owed to Drury and steps he wishes to take to collect on it. It includes this interesting line: "As I never allow an Irishman to get ahead of me in pmts I wish you to instruct whoever pays him to ." . The third letter is also addressed to the same F. H. Short. It is dated in New York on April 28th 1863. The writer is one E. R Bell. The letter concerns the attempt to collect proxies for a corporate election. In the letter reference is made to a 'President L'Hommedua'The fourth letter again addressed to F. H Short on letterhead of the Bank of America. It was written by Robert Jaffray Transfer Clerk at the Bank. The letter is dated Nov 20 1863. In it Jaffray advises Short that his account has been charged $20 for Government Stamps. He also states that the Certificate Book is nearly depleted. This refers to the share certificates that a company would issue to new shareholders. It appears that Short is using the Bank of America as his company's Transfer Agent. Our research has identified Robert Jaffray. Jaffray was born in Manhattan in 1824. He worked for the Bank of America in New York City. He passed away in 1902 at the age of 77. The fifth letter was written by S. R. Drury on Oct 31st 1863. Directed to the addressee whose name cannot be read it advises of a meeting date and time and requests some details of attendees. For a historian these letters hint at the range of banking business that was being carried out in the mid 19th century America. From covering payments to army units fighting in the Civil War to general corporate business one can see the robust American banking system in play. The Bank of America can trace its roots back to 1784 and today is the second largest banking conglomerate in the United States. This is a fine collection of primary-source banking instruments from a turbulent and fascinating time in America's history. The letters are in excellent condition. The handwriting is in a copperplate font which offers challenges to the modern reader. On offer are the riveting 1996-1998 handwritten diaries 2 of a self-destructive drug taking mentally ill and maybe deaf woman we believe to be 19 or 20 years old. She lives in Providence Rhode Island. At one point she signs her name but we will not reveal what we believe it to be as these books are less than 15 years old. These books are an unbelievable probing in-depth look into the mind of a profoundly disturbed woman who is very bright well read well written but extraordinarily troubled. She lays it all out in these journals. Here are some snippets: "April 13th at dad's doing illegal things; spoke to Dr. F_____ gave me 60 paxils; got a note too for blowing off class I should make a copy; still confused to exit my life or go on. It's 50/50; May 16th In Butter woman's partial program; was on 4th on suicide watch. Tried to OD on Paxil 2x; Missed finals. Life really does suck; Memorial Day I made two straight men kiss each other. Matt/Tom had a 3some. No sex. Ran around naked tripin on life. Hung out a window. 4 stories. Should I let the hands go; June 5th I think I need to go back in the hospital. I have too many overdue library books $114 worth and 2 more." Other entries point to getting help from a therapist Sue and the likely hood she has multiple personalities is detailed. She seems to name one Melissa and another named Malice. Later Dr. F______ believes she needs a shrink and Sue cannot give her what she needs. Shockingly she tells another story: 'Hung out with my sister Chriss last night got high watched a movie enjoyed myself. I proud of her not many people give her credit for her accomplishments. She was a deadhead jailed for 2nd degree manslaughter abused physically/mentally by our mother and her divorce. Now she has 3 beautiful kids awesome dead head husband…' In another shocking entry: Dave - he's a shady character. He has a psychotic sense to him. He says I am twisted and evil and he is god's messenger. Why is it important for him to be in the book Why does he love to play. The games that I crave he is craving. He wants to eat my death….He is sick. I am just crazy.' 'I found my old dissecting kit…can't help but want to cut myself….Saw Sue. I switched during the session. I don't think she noticed.' Later in the second book our writer reveals she understands very well about her other personalities and then in another shocker after all the others she reveals that only one of her personalities is deaf! She goes on to revel that her bosses are impressed with how she handles work all the while she is hearing voices. She even begins to call her inner personalities 'the kids' and she writes in her diary that she wishes one of the others would clean the room and pay the bills because she is sick of it. As the second book progresses her mental state declines. She moves near Boston and suggests that if Melissa finds out she will be pissed. She burns some pages with a cigarette it appears she has torn out some later pages but near the end the writing gets more chaotic and then stops with the last paragraph referring to going to wrapped in blanket with fearlessness and a teddy bear for a pillow and then to sleep. Sadly we think this was her end. Journal 1 is about 100 pages and nearly full. Journal 2 is about 120 pages and about 70% full. ‎Lunenberg Jaffrey Boston Massachusetts MA. Very Good. 1900. On offer is a handwritten archive of manuscript diaries written by Charles F. Paige. In all there are seven 7 diaries covering the years 1900 1902 1904 1906 1913 1920 and 1924. These make for a fascinating period collection of an incredibly hard working man who straddles the rural and urban worlds. He is a farmer itinerant worker for other farmers and also works for extended periods on more modern works for the Boston Elevated Railroad Co. Charles is also entrepreneur earning as much as $2.25 per day he pays those who labor for him 50 to 60 cents per day. Truly interesting even in the sporadic fashion of the diaries to see Charles' life evolve and progress. Places he called villages have become towns towns have become cities. So hard a worker is Charles that when in 1904 his father dies January 31 1904 87 years 10 months 25 days old and still Charles goes to work. He notes just 2 months later that Adeline S. ‎Glen Castle New York NY. Very Good. 1907. On offer is an interesting diary of the young Mrs. Floyd Paige nee Tyrell. Research suggests that they are new to marriage - Mrs. Paige notes that Floyd kills a chicken for dinner which she cooks and remarks with pride that this was only the third chicken she had ever dressed. A later notation marks there first anniversary. It also appears that this woman is surrounded by Floyd's family and she dutifully notes names throughout. Her Mother and brother Claude live not too faraway but mostly in touch with the telephone. Mrs Paige does a very good job relating succinctly her and her husband's days their visits births deaths and all those who enter their circle of life. She also relates work social activities and milestones. Here are snippets: "January 11th - a year ago today we went to keeping house" "Aunt Edna is 22 yrs old January 4th" "Joe the horse was sick" "February 14th Sport birthday one year old today" "February 16th Frank Ross married." "February 17th Pa is 54 years old today." "March 1st a mad dog scare" "swept the tenant house" "Hattie Palmer and Fayette Smith came here to be married. Father Paige married them Edna and I witnessed." "Witneys Point Fair" Binghamton Fair".
