Philadelphia Alaska. Very Good. 1909. On offer is an Alaskan Cruises souvenir diary for the 1909 travel season. One third of the book is pre-pinted information for tourists some wonderful photos of sights to anticipate along the way including; Old Kassan a deserted Indian village and native basket sellers. The unidentified writer does a super job detailing every leg of their adventure. While not expressive the diary is a point by point recitation of each day's highlights. A great deal of financial detail is included in the telling of the trip which begins June 1 1909 through July 8th. c. 1750 HANDWRITTEN ORIGINAL ITALIAN MILITARY MANUSCRIPT BOOK: OFFICER TRAINEE'S VADE MECUM
Italy. Very Good. 1758. On offer is a super 1750s handwritten Italian manuscript book of militaria which appears to have been an officer in training's vade mecum notebook or journal as evidenced by an extensive three page 'Tavola' Table of Contents with chapters on military protocol etiquette theory tactics and practice . This 250 year old manuscript is bound in simple though charming beige colored thick card stock with a fold over flap and a very interesting binding on the spine. Both covers are blank with no writing titles or designs with the exception of the letter "T" handwritten on the back cover. The text paper is of premium quality with a partial watermark discernible. As to authorship and ownership the only clues are on the last pages wherein our author made some personal notes including references to "Capitan Tenente Lieutenant Captain 10 Giugno 1758 and with a name "Nicolo Enzzo Savio." Researchers with a facility for Italian will most assuredly be able to fill in the blanks. The book has one page preface three page 'Tavola' of contents and then 158 pages of writing 11 blank pages for a total of 175 pages. The author hand numbered and miss-numbered the pages twice at pages 68 for one extra page and page 105 for two extra pages but stopped numbering at page 158. There are also a number of stubs of paper having been cut or torn out but no evidence of any writing or ink anywhere on the stubs. The last page of text does seem to conclude this manuscript. 5 1/2" x 7 3/4" soft cover. CAPTAIN DE LA CONTARDIERE
1694 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT LETTER OUTLINING THE MALADIES OF THE ARMY OF KING LOUIS XIV FROM THE SOON TO BE FAMOUS HERO OF THE SIEGE OF ENTREVAUX
ENTREVAUX FRANCE 1694. On offer is a superb manuscript letter dated 29th of September Entrevaux handwritten by the noted Captain de la Contardiere interesting letter on a variety of military subjects: the King's ordnances being stolen a Council of War a large number of maladies besetting the King's army issues with a particular Lieutenant Colonel in the Regiment etc. De la Contardiere is famous for his defense of Entrevaux in 1704. The historical background is fascinating: King Louis XIV of France having accepted the throne of Spain for his grandson Philippe of Anjou found himself in war against Austria England Holland and the Duchy of Savoy. These events are known as "The War of the Spanish Succession: 1701 to 1713". The army of the Duke of Savoy Victor-Amedee was mobilized to invade Provence. The garrisons of the forts of Entraunes and Rabbets in its possession were reinforced. The English fleet under Admiral Rook blocked Antibes preventing with the French reinforcements of the Le chevalier de Damas from returning to Entrevaux with artillery. Le chevalier de Blaignac with 1500 Savoyard troops and two fauconneaux small field guns went up the valley of Estéron and placed his seige at Entrevaux which was defended by a valorous soldier the Captain de la Contardiere a friend of Vauban the great expert on fortifications. The new fortifications which were not completely finished were to stand the test of fire on June 7 1704. The artillery of the fortress was not yet in place. The bourgeois garrison and militia had ten arquebuses with hooks in addition to the individual armament. The enemy army occupied the plateauxs of Pigière and Closes dominating Entrevaux. They did not have siege cannons as they were too heavy to be transferred onto the bad mountain lanes. On June 14 after one week of siege to relieve the pressure de la Contardiere decided to carry out a night attack which was a total success. A breach was opened in the palisade surrounding the Savoyard camp. The impetuous attack of the Entrevalais causes a rout of the enemies who although superior of number flew towards Seds. 8.5" x 7" overall VG. . Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 1863-1865 HANDWRITTEN CIVIL WAR ARCHIVE OF CORRESPONDENCE TO SGT. PETER LEER OF THE 103RD REGIMENT PENNSYLVANIA WITH DETAILS OF THE CONFEDERATE INVASION OF PENNSYLVANIA
Cumberland County Pennsylvania PA. Very Good. 1863. On offer is an important archive of sixteen 16 letters nine of which are dated from the Civil War with war content and of particular note being a June 1863 letter regarding the Confederate invasion of Pennsylvania one later 1894 postcard and two Leer calling cards. All of the letters were written to Peter Leer a young boy or young man who lived in York Springs Pennsylvania in Adams County just north of Gettysburg. A photograph of Leer later in life with his wife is included with this group. Most of the letters appear to have been written by Delilah Jones who lived in Cumberland County probably somewhere between Shippensburg and Carlisle. Here are some snippets: June 21 1863 "I have come back on account of the rebels coming. There was a grate time here on Tusday the news come that the rebels whare at Shippensburg. Sutch a time I never saw. all the men took thare horses and went to the mountains. They left the women at home to take care of themselves.I was not afraid. they said they would be here on Wednesday afternoon. Lizzie Gaymon and I went to the bottom rode to see them coming but whe whare disapointed .thare were five men come from Franklin Co they brought ten horses with them. last night thare was a man come with eight horses. he lives too miles from greencastle the rebels are encamped neer thare they are taking hundreds of horses up there. I dont think they will come here.I want you to answer this right away.and tell me.wether the people are scared about the rebels coming.I think you need not bee uneasy they will hardly get over there." Other letters written in the Spring of 1864 note a renewed fear that the rebels will invade again and another dated July 24 1864 which references Early's movement into Pennsylvania that summer. Another war dated letter references a local soldier who was killed at Petersburg and the end of the war. The letters also discuss farm life making apple butter the apple and peach crops bad conditions of the roads. All of the letters have their original envelopes. Some envelopes have some age discoloration but overall the letters are in excellent condition. Here are notes regarding Peter Leer's Civil War service: 103rd Regiment was organized on February 24 1862 under Col. Theodore F. Lehman and was reorganized in March 1865 when Company A's eighty-eight officers and men from Franklin County became connected with it. The war having closed the regiment was mustered out of service June 25 1865. Company A. - Captain Elias K. Lehman; first lieutenant George C. Carson; second lieutenant Samuel H. On offer is an original archive of 85 letters and approximately a dozen pieces of ephemera being an archive of multi generation family correspondence between sisters nieces brothers and cousins in north central Massachusetts and dating from 1851 through 1905 but primarily 1855 - 1890. The main recipient is Hattie Reed wife of James Reed. Research suggest 3 main tracks of correspondence: the Reed family the Woods family and the Merrill family figure prominently in the letters but there are also letters from friends and other family including Fletcher Boutelle Willie Proctor Emily Chandler G. Blair Daby . Most letters are dated Massachusetts towns: Lowell Ayers Farmingham Amherst Townsend Harbor Norwood East Cambridge and Ashburnham. Of the 85 letters approximately 19 are in what appears to be old German and some come from Europe and others from Maine. Research suggests from clues in the English language letters that Hattie was of German stock based in Maine Monmouth. This is a treasure of genealogy history and Americana. Paris FRANCE. Very Good. 1795. Manuscript. On offer is a superb unique circa 1795 Year 4 of the Revolution manuscript document relating to the liberation from prison of a 68 year old man. Almost an extraordinary age for a man in prison conditions of the era. The prison was the famous Bicetre and this is a detailed account of the affair. The man had a fake passport and had been arrested by soldiers. This is all the more an exceptional document given the 150 year history of the Bicetre which in its ay was an orphanage military hospital and lunatic asylum. The Bicêtre is most famous as the Asylum de Bicêtre where in 1793 Superintendent Philippe Pinel is credited as being the first to introduce humane methods into the treatment of the mentally ill and this letter and its content may well be a rare exhibit of those new policies. 1880 ORIGINAL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY LEVI HARD A FARMER FROM KENDALL ORLEANS COUNTY NY DOCUMENTING FARMING ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL LIFE
KENDALL N.Y. ORLEANS COUNTY. Very Good. 1880. On offer is an original diary of Levi Hard from Orleans County showing the life of a well-off farmer in a small New York town in 1880s detailing his day-to-day activities including routine farming operations fighting field blaze and his social life. The diary covers the whole year all pages are densely filled. At the time when the diary was written Levi Hard was about 70 years of age and lived with his wife their daughter and son-in-law lived nearby. They were growing crops fruit and vegetables and kept cows and sheep. Hard continued working himself and was often helped by his son-in-law Hiram and other relatives and neighbors and they often hired help. As many farmers' diaries this one includes records of weather and lists farming activities: "I got up at five or six milked 3 cows strained milk built a fire picked some corn to boil. Took care of Tom a horse and fed the pig. My wife has written a letter to thrashers in Albion" "Hartwell came and we went out to cutting Briers and Brush and weeds." However Levi also writes much about his contacts with local residents and thoroughly describes his correspondence with different people. The family had a piano and family members came to practice and to play. Here is one of the typical entries: "Webster stayed here last night Mart and Emma and wife were here last night. Hiram played on the viol Mart on the piano. Mart drew two loads of barley. I picked some grapes. Took a basket full over to Emma and half bush. peaches". The diary gives an insight to the local farming trends at the time crops production prices and volume of work at the farm and also refers to different local events. Many of the names he mentions can be found in the book "Landmarks of Orleans County New York" by Isaac Signor published in 1894. The diary is a book with brown cover with flap closure. The title page reads: "The Empire State Diary 1880". 1917 - 1919 ORIGINAL HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT DIARY OF JOHN BOYNTON PHILIP CLAYTON HILL A NOTED MARYLAND LAWYER ARMY OFFICER AND U.S. REPRESENTATIVE FROM MARYLAND DOCUMENTING TWO YEARS OF HIS CAREER
BALTIMORE MARYLAND. Very Good. 1917. On offer is the original manuscript diary that details and documents two years in the career of John Boynton Philip Clayton Hill 1879-1941 a noted lawyer and politician from Baltimore MD graduate from John Hopkins University 1900 and Harward law department 1903 who served as U.S. Attorney for the district of Maryland from 1910 to 1915 as judge advocate for the 15th Division attached to the 14th Cavalry Mexican border service and as Major and Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army during the World War I. At the time the diary was written he was running a law practice in Maryland - the diary contains a printed card dated May 1915 about expiration of the Law firm Hill Ross & Hill and continuation of general law practice by John Philip Hill: "John Philip Hill recently United States Attorney for Maryland will continue the general practice of law specializing in inter-state commerce and federal departmental matters and in the trial of causes in federal and state courts". The diary covers the first seven month in 1917 before Hill started his army service the last entry for that year made on July 25th:: "Ordered for war duty in office of the Adjutant General of Maryland"; the next entry was made on October 1 1919: "Returned from France April 29 1919. Discharged from Army May 9 1919. Resumed practice today" followed by a newspaper clipping and a printed advertisement about forming partnership with Daniel R. Randall and Oscar Leser "for the general practice of the law under the firm name of Hill Randall & Leser" with offices in Washington and Baltimore. The diary documents his law practice and political activity mentioning the cases he worked on places and events he attended meetings with other lawyers clients politicians. The diary mentions his meetings with many prominent persons lawyers judges politicians generals and senators such as William Phillips assistant secretary of state at that time senators Peter Gerry Hale and McKellar generals McCaine and Mann famous financier and art collector Clarence Mackay whom he was visiting at his Harbor Hill residence and many other. Entry of April 17 1917: "Went to Washington at 12 with S. and lunched with Senator P.G Peter Galley.Saw senators Fred Hale France McKellar and sat at the Senate Gallery for a time to hear debate on the 7 billion dollar war bill". Most prominent subjects include Special Session of Congress on April 2 1917 where President Wilson delivered his "War Message" Senate debates Republican Party events second inauguration of Woodrow Wilson and some law cases. Some records reflect events of his personal life three entries in Aril 1917 are about death of Charles Ebenezer Hill: "Charles E. Hill died at Temple N.H. at 4 a.m. this morning. his death was unexpected and a shock to me for which I was not prepared. He was 69." The records about cases are mostly brief mentioning client's name and time of meeting sometimes providing a judge name details about the stage of the case and the aspect on which Hill was working. In 1917 among other cases many entries are mentioning Headley Chocolate Factory in 1919 he actively worked on a case involving Baugh Chemical. There are two collections of John Philip Hill papers currently held by the Library of Congress and by the Historical Society of Maryland. The book has maroon hard cover with black letters "JPH" John Philip Hill stamped on the front cover and on the spine. It contains 368 numbered pages some of them blank. There is a large gap between page 200 containing the last entry for 1917 and page 267 with the first entry for the year of 1919. 1970s ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT SCREENPLAY FOR A ONE MAN STAGE PLAY TITLED 'THE DUKE: THE STORY OF MARION MICHAEL MORRISON
LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA USA. Very Good. On offer is an incredibly rare and unique manuscript that tells the story of one of America's most iconic film stars. The manuscript takes the form of a play that recounts the life of this great actor. The 147 page typed manuscript is bound in a common duo tang cover measuring 8.5 inches by 11 inches. It is 100% complete and is in excellent condition. Titled "The Duke: The Story of Marion Michael Morrison" the manuscript is subtitled "An Autobiographical Account of the Life and Times of John Wayne". This one-man stage play is written by Tom Regan. Anecdotally we are told Mr. Regan was a friend of Mr. Wayne. While undated we believe the script was written while Mr Wayne was still alive. The manuscript contains complete stage and setting directions indicating an experienced producer. The directions are detailed yet there is a flexibility in them: "The stage consists of a podium to the left. A screen which can be used for either motion pictures or slides is in the centre of the stage and is capable of being raised and lowered as needed for the story. If the budget would allow there could be two or three screens as in Beatlemania: the two in the sides for slides only. The idea here is to give the production the look of numerous characters even though it is essentially a one-man show" p 1. And that is the essence of the play - a sole actor portraying the iconic film legend John Wayne takes the stage and recounts the story of his life. 'John Wayne' enters the stage and begins with: "Well welcome Pilgrim. I wanna thank ya all for commin here tonight. We've gotta lotta territory to cover so I wantcha ta listen up and listen tight"p 3. And so it begins - the tale of Wayne's life and career told with wit and humour and self-reflection. He talks about his early life: "Now I reckon some of you know that my real name is Marion Morrison. What a hell of a name to hang on a poor defenceless baby. ." p 4. The script provides background information on his birth and youth early schools days the family move to Glendale CA which brought him into direct contact with the movie industry and much much more. He describes how he got his famous nickname - The Duke: "Well there's a lot of tall tales as to how that nickname came about and why nobody wants to go with the truth I'll never understand. The actual truth . I had this Airedale . The Airedale whom I named Duke and I were inseparable. . he dearly loved fire stations so I'd leave him hanging around there with all the firemen. Well. It got to the point that all of the firemen knew the name of the dog but didn't know the name of the Master. So when I came to pick him up they called the dog Little Duke and me Big Duke. Since I hated the name Marion and liked the masculine sound of Duke I encouraged all my friends to keep calling me Duke. And the nickname has stayed to this day"p 26. Forced to quit University when his scholarship was withdrawn he got a job working on movie sets for Fox Studios: ".the possibility of becoming an actor never occurred to me" p 46. That changed when a director named Raoul Walsh picked Wayne to star in his first Western move The Big Trail. That began a career that saw him star in 142 movies and along the way become an iconic American legend. The play is full of anecdotes and stories told in that familiar slow drawl that millions came to know. Stories of marriages friendships and crazy adventures. It ends with him expressing some thoughts on the meaning and value of acting for him. This is a simply outstanding work. A collector of John Wayne memorabilia or simple western movie memorabilia would have a superb piece to add to their collection. This is a valuable resource to a film historian. It is a unique piece about a central figure in American mythology. 1863 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER DETAILING THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THIS 87 YEAR OLD MAN WHEN HE LIVED IN NEW YORK CITY IN 1791
Baltimore Maryland MD 1863. On offer is a fascinating historic original manuscript letter written by an unknown elderly Baltimore man and likely a member of the Adams family and related to Thomas Boylston Adams September 15 1772 - March 13 1832 the third and youngest son of John and Abigail Smith Adams in response to a request he write of his life and times in New York City. The letter was part of a greater group from the Thomas Boylston Adams papers. The writer relates what an active involved and intelligent teenager and young man experienced in the heady historic days of New York City from 1791 to the turn of the Century. The author gives a real person's view of the French Revolution from the American perspective the feeling of the 'street' to Jacobin views and much more of the politics of the era. The 87 year old man begins "You wish me to communicate for publication such facts and information in regard to Men and things in the City & State of New York as I may from my residence in that City have been connected with or acquired a knowledge of in the early period of my long life." It goes on in part: "Having an ardent desire to see General Washington I soon found my way to Cherry Steer and the Franklin House near Pearl Street where he resided." "It was I think in 1793 or certainly soon after that Francis who had been General Washington's Steward established on or near the Battery his celebrated Ice Cream & Cake house probably the first public house of its kind in the United States." "In his speech at the opening of Congress 1795 the President General Washington.said "Government founded upon the genuine principles of rational liberty and with mild and wholesome laws was it too much to say that our Country exhibited a spectacle of National Happiness never surpassed if ever before equalled." ENGLAND TO CANADA JAPAN CHINA MALAYSIA. Very Good. 1906. On offer is an original early 20th Century superbly detailed 33 page travel diary titled "My Notes on Canada Japan & China 1906-7." of an unusual east to west world voyage with succinct descriptive entries handwritten by an unknown diarist. Our traveller is an Englishman who begins by crossing the Atlantic to America and then an almost 3000 mile train crossing the width of Canada via Canadian Pacific Railway then a further two months in Japan a mere year after the Russo-Japanese War then one month in Shanghai's International Settlement a short stop in Hong Kong then a British Crown colony and a week in Malaysia. The 67¼ day tour is minutely logged and a factual treasure trove of travel and adventure details making for a unique telling of this England through Canada and then the Far East trip from 10 August 1906 to 22 January 1907 without missing a day. The exceptional attention to numerical detail even noting room numbers arrival times and minutes delayed temperatures and distances by the 70 year old traveller whose his birthday is the day before they land in Québec includes an itinerary of the journey on front endpaper and concludes with the total distance travelled 22507 miles noting of course that the latter does not include extracurricular excursions. The 7 x 4½ inch brown cloth book is slight fraying to front lower edge otherwise very good condition and internally clean. 1806 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT OF HISTORICAL PHI BETA KAPPA SPEECH AT THEIR 30TH ANNIVERSARY MEETING HANDWRITTEN BY THE SON OF PRESIDENT ADAMS
CAMBRIDGE MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA 1806. On offer is a superb historically significant 1806 manuscript essay: "A Disquisition upon the Philosophy of the Ancients pronounced before the society of Phi Beta Kappa at their anniversary meeting at Cambridge 28th August 1806" presented as a speech this being the final draft with corrections handwritten by Thomas Boylston Adams 1772 - 1832 the third and youngest son of President John Adams and brother to future president John Quincy Adams. The 15 page essay was read before the society on August 28th 1806 and later published in the Boston Atheneum was read on the 30th anniversary of the Phi Beta Kappa F Society which drew the attention of many distinguished guests and many prestigious orators who delivered speeches in honor of the society. The author describes his philosophical bent and directly into the heart of his politics as he once detailed to Abigal Adams: "I must study politics and war that our sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy." His sentiment is fully expressed in this erudite lecture on philosophy by Adams. Here is a snippet: "Of those institutions in our own Country professing similar objects it is remarkable that the most conspicuous were founded amid the din of army and in the very heat of our struggle for Independence; affording an honorable illustration of the truth of a maxim that the love of liberty and that of solid and useful knowledge walk always hand in hand." The final page has a list a dozen references from Hume to Priestly and Sir William Jones men whose works underpinned American thought and ideals. The 8 x 6 inch pages are in excellent shape with light wear the paper wrapper in lesser condition with chips and rubs. Overall VG. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript. unknown

Oswego New York USA. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1914. Original Wraps. This is the handwritten personal diary of a young girl named Jennie I. Lee who was most likely in her mid-teens when she wrote in 1912 and 1914. The diary was a Christmas present to her from Mary Gardner. Jennie lived in upstate New York near Oswego. Other towns mentioned in her diary are Belleville Sandy Creek Woodville Adams Old Forge and Watertown. She wrote pretty consistently in her diary from New Year's Day 1912 until early June of that year. She skipped 1913 and picked up again on January 1 1914 writing just about every day until January 27th when she ran out of pages. Jennie's diary is full of the daily comings and goings of her large family and various visitors neighbors friends horses dogs stage coaches sleigh rides History regents exams funerals play rehearsals annagrams socials delivering milk gardening etc. Her diary gives a wonderful view of a girl's life nearly 100 years ago in New York farm country. Some excerpts: "Mama fixed a waist for me didn't get it quite done." "Mason and I went to schoolhouse to a valentine party in evening 31 children there and six ladies.Mason got prize for drawing best heart with man's face in it-handsome valentine.""Had an offer made me today." "Young people gave their play tonight. Had a fairly good turn out for the kind of night. Rec'd about $14." The writing is clear and legible. 1864 1867 ACCOUNTS BOOK ARCHIVE OF HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A YOUNG PIONEER CIVIL WAR ERA WOMAN BESET BY TRAGEDY
Blandford Massachusetts. Very Good. 1864. This modest archive of diaries belonged to Mary A. Herrick of Blandford Mass. Sometimes slow reading but legible each page details the incredibly hard life of this pioneer woman. We believe she is a young late teens perhaps as she mentions once she is making cheese for the very first time. woman married I think as I believe the girl Hattie was hers living with her brothers sisters and father. I have not found reference to a mother and I am not sure about the husband. Most of the chores fall to her each day toiling many days tragedy to report for example the year begins straight off; "A solemn New Year with the corpse of little Hattie lying in the south room. Aunt ____ and children gone home. Holden and Louisa worked for us all day. In my black duds." "Mr. Osborn brought home the coffin black walnut." The neighbor down the road assesses that Hattie's death is "from diptheria and then croup." Feb 14th "Went to church first time since Hattie died. I was very much affected not a child to sit with me". It takes Mary until July to pay Dr. Andrews the monies he is owed. Another entry states "chimney caught fire". "Little May is not well. Father borrowed Mr. Tiffanys machine as his is broke." "Went to __'s fraid he's got diptheria. carried up some medicine." The only direct mention of the Civil War is "We hear bad news from the Army." Other references are more subtle. This pioneer woman is too preoccupied with hard scrap times to worry about the war otherwise it seems. Father makes many occasional trips to Springfield. The last heartbreaking entry for Dec. 31st 1864 - "exactly one year ago today my Hattie passed away." Then there are ledger pages first couple of entries for cash accounts. Not much else there until the very end with a list of deaths for the years. Poor Mary was beset and pre-occupied on the subject the whole year. Other entries dealing with everyday life so many ending with how very tired she is. Only 4 days do not have any entry at all in 1864. 1867 is a little less written but not by much. The diaries measure 4" wide x 2.5" high. The cash ledger 4 x 6 in. is being held together by the strings in the binding. There is a 2.5" tear on the lower rear spine edge. Three of the pages are loose. 52 pages have entries. The name on the inside front cover appears to be A.A. Leffingwell of Massachusetts Barrington Making of cider selling of lamb charges for the use of a horse are among the transactions. Some of the names listed are Henry Chapman William Golden Henry Bigelo William Avery L.K.Bosworth Henry Woodruff Edward Pease John Aldrich E.B.Cole Charley Washburn Charley Bartlet John Campbell Elisha Avery Theodore Lyman William Johnson. NORTHAMPTON CHICOPEE SPRINGFIELD MASSACHUSETTS MA. Very Good. 1854. On offer is the remarkable handwritten journal of Mr. E. Chester . Gray as shown on the free front endpaper's title: "E.C.Gray's Topic Book". Extraordinary Americana relic of the 1850s through the 1880s being one part what appears to be an abridged version of the renowned 'Treatise on Anatomy Physiology and Hygiene' by Dr. Calvin Cutter which Mr. Gray kept as a medical reference comprising of approximately 26 pp of the text with 31 chapters. Mr. Gray of the Northampton Massachusetts had an exceptionally fine almost calligraphic in its steadiness handwriting in this very densely written journal packed with his precise neat cursive. Research suggests that Mr. Gray may have been a doctor and a reverend or deacon of his Church. This section is followed by some 60 pp. of ink and pencil poems songs sermons including "The Arab's farewell to his Horse" "To the Wind" "Sonnet Written in a Churchyard" "A Thought on the Future" "The Californian's Song" by Brown; and many more. There is yet another section of recipes for baked goods dye colors remedies cures and much more. 1984 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A YOUNG TEENAGE SCHOOLBOY AND HIS LOVE AND DESIRE TO PROTECT HIS ABUSED FRIEND SARAH
HOPE MICHIGAN . Very Good. 1984. Full-Leather. On offer is an intriguing 1984 manuscript diary handwritten by a young man we estimate 15 or 16 as he is still in school and mentions studying the Civil War in History class who shares in his writings a long tale of desire for a girl named Sarah. The handmade diary 4 x 6 inches being a piece of leather wrapped around colored paper and held by a piece of binding cord like string is a gift from this girl. Purportedly found under a bridge the 92 pages of manuscript writing reveals Sarah's terrible family life and the boy's struggle through love to protect her and provide a better life. That said he lashes out at her when she fails to stay in contact or keeps him wondering if she is well and his life is peppered with other conquests as he laments his relationship with Sarah. He considers plans to take her away and escape the abuse but given the young man's age and still being in school there is really little he can do but the writing makes for a compelling portrait of the two. There are a number of illustrations that add to the charm of this romance of the 1980s. The town they are in is identified by the name 'Hope' and we believe from other clues that this is most probably Hope Michigan. WASHINGTON DC LEIPZIG LEIPSIC. Very Good. 1899. On offer is the original 1899 manuscript diary handwritten by Rebecca P. Warner known by one and all as Bess or Bessie who was 26 at the time. Bess the oldest of 9 children offers the reader a unique view of how a prominent wealthy Washington DC family the lived at the end of the 19th century but even more important is the very intimate interesting view of Germany during one of the country's most fascinating eras of historical development pror to World War I. Bess' father was Brainard Warner Sr. who was a lawyer but made his fortune in banking real estate and land development. His company was responsible for the oversight or building of over 1000 buildings and homes in the Washington DC area. Bess's mother was Mary Jacobs Parker Warner who was descended from Edward Doty a Pilgrim and indentured servant who sailed over on the Mayflower signed the Mayflower Compact and helped to settle Plymouth Colony. This diary describes Bess' trip with her sister Anna and brother Brainard Jr. to Leipzig Germany where Brainard Jr. was the US Consul. Bess does a super job of detailing setting up house in Leipzig and also about their daily lives there. They also did a lot of traveling within Germany and she describes that as well. Research notes that the Warner family endured a lot of sadness. They lost three children at birth or very early in life. They lost their mother Mary Jacobs after the birth of Lucy who then died. They lost their son and brother Southard who committed suicide at age 33 by shooting himself while stationed as a consul in China. Then Brainard Warner Sr died two years after the death of Southard. Here are some snippets and observations from a casual reading: They went to the motette at St Thomas Kirche which was very beautiful. The church was crowded. Students belonging to a club were there. They stayed after the service and thought they might see a German wedding. They have them nearly every Saturday after motette. They got caught in the middle of a religious service. They were sitting right in front of the minister and Bess was afraid they'd get called up to do something In the evening Mrs Young telephoned to ask them over. Brainard had an engagement but Bess and Anne went. They left Leipzig for Chemnitz and went directly to the consulate where they had supper. They went with Mr Monaghan to Schellenburg where his family was summering. "This was a queer little town located on the top of a mountain" There is a beautiful castle and some old walls. Aside from that Bess thought it was an uninteresting place to spend a summer. They left on Monday. They went to a parade in honor of the King of Saxony. About 5000 men were received. They expected to see the King on horseback but he was on foot with other officers. They met Professor Gregory who showed them around some parts of the University. In the afternoon Brainard Anne and Bess called on Mrs Monroe. Brainard went out in the evening with friends. "Today is the Emperor's birthday and all the flags are out. We stood for a long time to watch the Lieut General review the officers. It was a fine sight. what little we could see though the crowd But we were nearly frozen it was so cold" Bess practiced and then went for a lesson with Herr Krause only he wasn't in. She went again at 4 pm. "He was very discouraging and said I had no independence of fingers" Bess thought it would take her several lessons to get the right finger position and that there was no royal road to piano playing. "Hard work is the only road to success in anything". She went home. They had letters from Mamma and Pa. Then they went over to hear the St Thomas Kircke choir practice
such beautiful voices. They had a number of people who stopped by for visits." We actually had a count call on us Graf Laisher who was very bright and interesting. He is studying medicine at the University" He said he couldn't speak English but he was very fluent. He proceeded to show them some of his feats of exercise and they were petrified because of their rented furniture. But everything was whole when he left. In the evening Bess and Anne went to the home of Mrs Morris. They danced but it was more of a lesson for the young grandson. He fancied Bess as a teacher and so they whirled around in a circle for 2 hours. Bess wrote that dancing on the ship over was "nothing compared to my feelings after dancing in the mad German fashion" Bess Anne and Lucy went to the Catholic Church which the royal family attended. "I must say I was thoroughly disappointed in royalty as exhibited here. The king queen and two other members of the family sat in boxes on a level with the gallery of the church and just to the left of the altar. Princess Matilda is one of the coarsest people I have ever seen. She spent most of her time yawning. She must weigh at least 200 lbs. We only stayed while the King and Queen were there." The diary has approximately 141 pages of entries from January 1 1899 to August 2 1899 with some gaps in this 4" x 6 ½" diary. NEW HEBRIDES KURDISTAN JERUSALEM CHINA. Very Good. 1899. On offer is a super relic of early 20th Century Christian Missionary outreach being an autograph album with handwritten hand-drawn entries from noted Missionaries around the world. A printed card pasted on the front free endpaper identifies this as belonging to T.H. Blunt Gorse Bank Bury. The Reverend T.H. Blunt was an English author of 'A Plain Account of the English Bible and its Translators from the Earliest Times'. Very charming with pastel paper pages with twenty-seven pages of with autographs prose biblical passages written by missionaries from New Hebrides Kurdistan Jerusalem and China. It is written in English as well as in Chinese characters and a number of other languages. Included signatures and inscriptions are by such personages as Wilda Mathews of the Inland Mission China who later in life with her husband Arthur were the last foreign Missionaries to leave China in 1953 following the take-over of the Communist Party in 1945; Bishop Sargis Jeloo; John B. Martin who ran a boy's day school in Tsin-chow China; George A.C. Forder Jerusalem who was born April 20 1895 and whose father was a Missionary in the Holy Land. The son became Assistant Finance Officer in the Military Governate Jerusalem in 1919; and Frank Hume Lyall Paton New Hebrides Paton 1870-1938 was born on the island of Aniwa in what was then New Hebrides. The book also includes a page with the red wax seal of the Governor from Jeloo Kurdistan Turkey; an original water color of birds; and a page with the blue Jewish National Fund label with Star of David and the word for Zion in Hebrew. There are also two loose handwritten pieces: one page folded related to Jeloo orphanage and one page rough map showing various cities with missionaries or a tour itinerary. Soft black leather pages all edges gilt with gilt lettering on front cover and borders inside of book covers. Good covers some whitening of letters wear extremities worn especially head and tail of spine strip some cracking of hinges. A rare and unusual original work of interest to those who collect material related to religion and the Christian missionary movement at the turn-of-the-century. MEDICINE BOW NATIONAL FOREST WYOMING WY. Very Good. 1915. On offer is an interesting diary written in the early 20th century by William F. Will a young forest ranger working in the Medicine Bow National Forest of Wyoming. The diary kept a log of his daily activities from April 1 1915 to January 31 1916. There is an entry for every day during this time period. Wills duties were many and varied and he often logged the hours spent on each task in the diary. The young ranger spent a good deal of time throughout the course of the year working on several maps showing boundaries domestic grazing allotments telephone lines several types of fire maps and others. Finished drawing protractors on fire location map and wrote memo on some. Started to make a map showing location of stool-boxes and caches etc. After reporting for duty on May 24 at Laramie a great deal of his time was spent in the repair and installation of telephone lines. Especially in the summer months Will often joined other Park Service employees to fight forest fires often for several days at a time. He also monitored campsites to make sure fire prevention techniques were being followed by the residents or campers. He was called upon to search for a missing woman and on one occasion he even searched for a lost horse. In the fall he helped build a bunk house at Brooklyn Lake and got ready for winter by moving the horses to a ranch and making mouse proof storerooms. The firefights make for very interesting reads. For example: July 17 1915. Rode Woolfs range with him and Herder. Showed him the allotment lines and the closed area around Brooklyn Lake. Started out on telephone work but lookout man reported Turpin Lake Sawmill on fire at 1:30. Duther called up and said to wait until he talked over long distance. He called up and said to get Chase and go to the fire.arrived at fire at 6pm then rode to Turpin Saw mill found four of Bueolys men there. Men started to arrive at fire had 9 men on fire that night. Fire suppression - 11 Hrs. Munroe the camp watchman stated the fire started from the sawdust pile and he tried to stop it from burning the mill but found it impossible to check the timber fire. The grazing of domestic livestock was permitted in the park in certain areas. This practice continues today and is still the subject of some controversy. It was one of the ranger's duties to make sure that the boundaries for grazing were adhered to. There were times when the local ranchers and the Park Service employees did not get along August 18. Rode over to So ____ Fork hunted up the herder. I told him the sheep had been in my pasture and he had to keep them out. Then rode the range between Brooklyn Lake and Coney Ridge and found a little pocket that Woolf had just run through.Started to storm hail and ran so started back to Brooklyn Lake.; June 8. Repaired telephone line Rayfork to Ropers ranch got wire all spliced but not tied in called on Roper to see about moving telephone camp in there. He informed me that his place was closed to all Forest Service men and we could not stop there and he wanted all Forest Service equipment at his place including telephone taken from there. Census records of 1910 show a William F Will living with his parents in Laramie WY. The Census shows his year of birth as 1897 making him 18 years old when he joined the Park Service. The diary measures about 3 1/2" x 6 1/2". It was issued by the US Department of Agriculture. The front page reads: United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service. Notice. This book is Government property. The finder is requested to mail it to The Forester Washington D.C. or to deliver it to any officer of the Forest Service. There are over over 150 handwritten pages. The covers and spine are in good condition both aesthetically and structurally. The pages within are without any age-toning or significant rips or tears. The paper is a grid-lined yellow paper. The handwriting is easy to read and legible throughout in black ink and without significant fading or smudging. LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA SEATTLE WASHINGTON. Very Good. 2002. On offer is a unique one-of-a-kind and often quite bizarre handwritten journal and diary from a man going through a difficult and intense time in his life. The writing is interesting and occasionally quite strange often going back and forth between straightforward thoughts and poetic expressions and passages. What is most evident from the beginning is that the author is going through a very difficult divorce. Here in this book is where he puts all his deepest and most intimate thoughts about his life his failed relationship and his child. The journal begins with an original poem by the author and then goes into a 16-page description of the breakdown and dissolution of his relationships and his whole life. I think the only thing that kept me going was her. Life on my side had just about hit rock bottom. Newly divorced and the mental skid was on - I had packed one small bag walked out the door and didn't look back til it was too late. She was everything that woman I'd left behind wasn't. Full of energy a lust for life sexy as the sun and beautiful. She lit up something in me I didn't even know existed. He writes living in a warehouse with no heat in Los Angeles California. He never explicitly says it but it seems hes a carpenter mentioning woodworking and house work a few time. Its obvious from the writing that hes miserable. He moves up to Seattle with the light of his life his girlfriend Malea. It doesnt work out well for his girlfriend: Wasn't all that great for Malea however as my sister looked at her as the "other woman" - the one who had broke up my marriage stolen her beloved sister-in-laws husband and apparently had done so without conscience. At the end of the 16 pages he writes: I stayed with Malea - she was so beautiful. I think that was the beginning of the end. The next page contains another original poem. After the poem comes a letter: Dear Malea it has been a long time since I have seen you - driving away from that airstrip in New Orleans.I have tried to remember you as a beautiful person. You know that from the last conversation we had on the phone. That's hard to do now. You told Adam that I was psychologically and/or verbally abusive to you and you felt he had taken my "side" in our break-up. It seems she accused him of abusing her physically and emotionally. By the tone of his writing it might not be far from the truth: You said that I treated you poorly - not very well - your words. I tried. You could never see that. You didn't have a place to live I gave you what I had. You had no one to help you move - your friends Where were they You always put on your bright and shiny face for them never let them see that depression the fear and anger in you. Then you tell them that I was abusive. Fuck you. Your conscience will follow you all the days of your life no matter how you try to convince yourself otherwise. Fuck your therapist. That stupid bitch wouldn't counsel us yet felt she could counsel you on." More poems follow as well as short dated entries that focus on the other side of his life apart from his breakup. He comments on his work and in November 2002 on George W. Bush as president and the war in Iraq. There are also his personal goals: relationship with Heather first wife and Finnley his child. Spiritual growth - relating the presence of the Lord to life. The rest of the pages are devoted to sketches of carpentry related work and a few torn pages used for estimates drawings materials etc. It appears the author used the book as his diary and also for a bit of his work. The combination is very interesting and unique. The book is approximately 50 pages in length. Almost all the pages have writing in them. About 30 or so of those pages are his journal and thoughts and the rest are the pages devoted to his work as a carpenter. The book is a ring binder in good condition. The covers show aesthetic wear especially on the edges but nothing structurally. All the pages are still attached to the rings. There is some wear on the beginning and end pages but all else still look good. The handwriting is easy to read in a combination of pencil and blue and black ink. The pencil is slightly faded but can still be easily read. The book is 9 x 12 inches in size. 1815 - 1865 SUPER ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY ONE OF HIS AND HER MAJESTY NAVY LIEUTENANTS LIVING A LIFE RIGHT OUT OF MASTER AND COMMANDER WITH SENSATIONAL ROYAL NAVY EPHEMERA: THE LT.'S OWN COURT MARTIAL FOR MURDER
GREAT BRITAIN. Very Good. 1815. On offer is simply superb manuscript of a Royal Navy officer's exploits in the age of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". From the Napoleonic Wars through the rest of the 19th century Britain ruled the world and her instrument was the Royal Navy. This outstanding manuscript details the service of one officer who sailed to 'the far side of the world' when the Royal Navy ruled the world's seas. The manuscript is 176 pages in length and is 100% complete. All pages are typed so legibility is total. Pages are 8 1/24 by 14 inches. The pages are in excellent condition. They are enclosed in a hard cardboard folder. There are several other papers with the manuscript including one of note that will be elaborated on below. John Fullerton joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in May 1815 at 12 years of age. He began his service on HMS Larne a 20 gun corvette. Four days in he saw his first punishment: ". four dozen lashes the first punishment I had ever seen and I never yet met the person who could look upon the infliction without a shudder" p1. From that rather grim introduction he went on to serve in a series of HM ships and travelled the world. He describes his rite of passage when he first crossed the equator on Oct 11th 1819: ". All those who have not been across the Line now go below and the hatchways are guarded . and one at a time blindfolded brought up taken to the chair through a line of people who . "p. 6. He had plenty of adventures. Once after becoming acquainted with a woman in Rio de Janeiro he met a man as he left her home. After exchanging greetings: ". he politely put a knife into my left side and left it there. I gave him an equal portion of my sword and retreated to the ship hospital ." p11. With his friend Hack Hawthorn a Wild Middy p11 he often got into scrapes including one where he and some friends faced off with a Portuguese military street patrol: ". Our swords out and in less than three minutes had possion of their muskets and bayonets but obliged to decamp on board. . Jack generally got those who went on shore with him into similar scrapes." p.12. In 1821 he was commissioned a Lieutenant. His manuscript is rich in observations of places he travelled to and people he met. He mentions a collision with HMS Revolutionaire which was under command of the son of the great Royal Navy Captain Edward Pellew. p24 His descriptions are rich in detail: "I accompanied some Chilinoes to a fair in the country and races many tents with refreshments and dancing people from all parts of the country flocked and a very animated scene it was fair damsels under charge of their sweethearts or lovers and sprightly dame with her shadow not husband he playing the tender to some other man's wife" p77. He also keeps a constant mention of other ships they meet or travel with which provides a first-rate way of cross-referencing other ship's records. On Sept 9th 1827 Fullerton along with some other officers attended the theatre in Valparaiso Chile. He goes into a dispute with a Chilean sergeant which continued to escalate until he shot and killed the sergeant. After a bloody fight in the lounge area of the theatre he escaped wounded to his ship. In reprisal English officers ashore were rounded up and imprisoned. A week later he surrendered to authorities and a jailed until a Spanish court-martial could be convened. At length he was acquitted. What makes this account so historically interesting is that included with the manuscript is the typed statement of the British Consul John White who acted in his defense. The 13 page document is typed on 8 1/2 inch by 14 inch paper and is in excellent condition. It begins: "John White Esq Consul of His Britannic Majesty counsel for Lieutenant John Fullarton Royal Navy accused of having killed Sergeant Jose Maria Minos present the following to the court in justification of the act committed by the said officer ." p1. The defense makes for fascinating reading. It is accompanied by a 46 page packet containing 8 pages of handwritten notes which were part of the original draft. For a naval historian this is an outstanding description of service in the Royal Navy written by an officer with a keen eye for descriptive detail. Written at a time when the Royal Navy truly ruled the oceans of the world it is a treasure trove for information. Whether ship locations customs in foreign lands or life on board it is an outstanding primary source document. The court-martial defense is an excellent example of litigation argument in the early 19th century. It touches on key aspects of self-defense argument that forms the basis for the common law that governs millions of people today. On offer is an original 1973 manuscript book titled 'PERISCOPE PERSONALITIES 1901-1972' written by British Warrant Engineer Leslie Honeywill who was a Chief Engine Room Artificer CERA or a plumber as he jokingly called himself on a number of submarines. Leslie Honeywill published many articles and books on naval subjects he was Chief Engine Room Artificer born in St John Pembroke Dock in 1899 and died in 1979. He became a leading authority on Submarine Navy subjects and after the war was consulted by High Ranking Navy officers. Periscope Personalities is a typed manuscript bound as a single volume c.1973 being a compilation of extracts from various histories which give an account of experiences opinions and stories of submarine leaders. Leslie Honeywill published many articles and books on naval subjects he was Chief Engine Room Artificer born in St John Pembroke Dock in 1899 and died in 1979. He became a leading authority on Submarine Navy subjects and after the war was consulted by High Ranking Navy officers. The foreword in which Leslie Honeywill describes this book manuscript is as follows: 'In this compilation an attempt has been made to present some of the experiences opinions and others' opinions of submarine leaders commanding officers engineers and constructors of the Royal Navy. Over 150 names are included and 100 sources used. Many eminent submariners have been omitted either to avoid repetitive events or for lack of material relating to their exploits. Enough has however been included to provide some idea of the range of activities of our submariners from Holland-1 of 1901 to the present day' L Honeywill July 1973. BERLIN GERMANY. Very Good. 1945. On offer is the stunning original manuscript relic of Berlin's remaining months in Nazi hands the eventual conquest and the following months in the German capital from the rare perspective of a German policeman's wife. The woman Mrs. Otto Enke we believe wrote her intimate and private thoughts of the very last days of Hitler's Germany and the entire year of 1945 and into 1946. Stranded by her husband and son left alone under the nightly bombing raids of the last months of 1945 she details the horrors deprivations and oncoming onslaught of the Russian army whose path she is directly in front of. She writes of the rape of her neighbours by Russian soldiers; the death of her son on the eastern side of Berlin she writes on every page the true and horrific life she endures as the wife of a policeman in Berlin. Here are snippets: 13.2.1945 The day the fire-bombing of Dresden commenced Went to the publishing house to pick up my pay. Spoke with Tiburtgius sic Krocher Cashier and ladies. There are 18 dead and wounded there. Caskets were still being carried out. Went to the hairdresser in the afternoon. Gerhard and his girlfriend came and Gunter and Erika. 14. 2. Wednesday - Alarms the whole morning. Went with Mrs. Weber to the basement. Another attack in the evening now it's 11 pm and I'm going to sleep. As of today the Berlin Volkssturm troups are to return. The Battalion leader told me this personally. Mr. Hagemann got his return booked - he was just there. 15. 2. Thursday Went to the Market. The alarm sounded so I went into the air raid shelter with Mrs. Linke. In the evening I went to Weltersdorf. I initiated several conversations hoping to get news of Otto unfortunately nothing yet. Bombs rained down every half hour. Across the way the house collapsed. So we spent the entire day in the cellar. In the evening there was more shooting. It was a terrible night. From 11:30 pm until 5 am we were in the cellar. Thursday 26.4. Now I am waking up. It's said that in the Bahnstrasse the apartments are being vacated evacuated. I've had enough. I got up immediately freshened up and went to Hagermann's where we had coffee. Another big attack. I fled to the air raid shelter

At 6 am I already started to sew in bed. 12 noon Guenter wanted to leave the house very early. I went at 2 pm and to Blanckenfeld to Mr. Fischer unfortunately he'd moved. In the evening I drank a strong beer stout spoke with Luehrs. 11pm Monday 2. 9.46 Slept well this night until 8:45 am. IN the morning I went to the coal place but it was in vain. Then I visited customers. When I returned there was a telegram from brother Karl there from Belzig from the camp! I went immediately to Knorr and obtained a certificate that he will be employed again. Mia was also already here they had already received the telegram yesterday. Tomorrow I will make further inquiries. But I am glad that the family is in Germany. Good Night! In the evening Miss Tutti came and darned. Tuesday 3.9. This morning and afternoon I visited customers and even got two assignments. Also I hurried and made inquiries with regard to repatriation home for my brother and family. I spent 3 hours at city hall on Geraminstreet. Only prisoners of war can get bookings for the next day
since I want to go to Belzig. Now it's 11pm. Exhausted I fall into my bed. Wednesday 4. 9. So in the morning at 6:30 we set out unfortunately we Mia and I only got on the 10:20 train. Around 1pm we arrived in Belzig. Gretel and Juergen were in the camp Karl had travelled to Berlin in the morning. When I arrived home at 10 in the evening Karl was there. We talked until midnight in Bed. One has do much to relate. Miss Tutti had in the evening cooked a Tomato soup it was very good. She brought fruit etc. Thursday 5.9. We slept until 7:30 then I drove with Karl to Fauke's. Karl went from the Nalindorfplatz and I went to Fehlar v. Eraazt and with Mr. Gold and Mr. Prinz. On Monday I will go again and get an answer. In the evening I went to the Lehar hour. Gunter and Miss Tutti picked me up. I am exhausted. 1947 ORIGINAL POST WORLD WAR II MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A CHARMING AND BRILLIANT BROOKLYN NEW YORK TEENAGE JEWISH GIRL
BROOKLYN NEW YORK NYC USA. Very Good. 1947. On offer is a charming original 1947 manuscript diary handwritten by Miss 'Val Greenfield Age 14-15' an active hardworking student sister and daughter who details her life and that of her brother Stuart and her parents in Brooklyn New York just after World War II. Val is a very dedicated diarist using her page-a-day diary daily save for a break from late April through late June and again the last week in August through the first week of September. Her life is a never ending carousel of work: at school she is an 'A' student rarely getting any marks below 90 in French Latin and a host of other subjects - at one point she receives what she feels is a terrible mark of 80 in a subject. At home she and her brother work helping the parents from washing floors cleaning the bathroom etc. Her slightly older brother who she obviously adores suffers physically and has Grand Mal seizures but together they study and even work shovelling snow for extra money. Endearingly they write out business contracts and pledges for working together or sharing. She writes of going shopping and buying sugar which is 'terribly scarce.' She also writes about school and her social life attending Dodgers games going to the movies etc. One night when she and mom go to a show they leave "the house lights as 10 gangsters escaped from Bklyn jail." She is a brilliant student with high marks all around: 100% in biology 100 in Physics 95% in French her description of pledging with a fraternity is wonderful running out of oil in the winter and much much more detailing a good but tough life in post War New York. Her folks are not without resources as Dad does inspections of some sort on fences trucks tires knitting machines etc. with 4 men working for him and some out of state so we can safely assume it is more technical and substantive than her basic observations. This girl is in many ways a typical Jewish-American girl but her ambition in school and her love of her family makes this diary a true testament to a spirited but level headed bright young woman. Researchers and historians of the era will find the sum and soul of this intriguing young lady in a simple quote from the diary: "We all got up late but dad who is as constant as the North Star." 1982 FASCINATING ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL OF SAYINGS QUOTES MEMORIES AND DIARY OF A NOTED HISTORIAN SPIRITUALIST AND SANSKRIT SCHOLAR

On offer is a fascinating manuscript relic of many years study of Indian literature history philosophy and all matters spiritual and New Age thought being a journal dated 1982 handwritten by Indologist Ruth Reyna Ph.d. dedicated to her Grandson. Dr. Reyna used the book as a collection of specific quotes or writings she had written over a four decade period. This passage gives the gist of it: 'My special diary tintinnabulations of the mind refers to soft ringing in the ear which heralds my innermost thoughts'. There are approximately 90 pages of writings and notes including a retrospective diary section. The earliest quotes appear from 1957 through the 1980s with a few later to 1993 in a weaker hand. Many of the later entries deal with her declining health with some very intimate entries dealing with her mortality. Reyna was noted for having deciphered some old Sanskrit documents that detailed ancient flying machines how to build them etc. She is mentioned in David Hatcher-Childress' books. Milwaukee Wisconsin WI / Germany. Very Good. 1927. Full-Leather. This diary reveals the story of one young woman's trip to Germany in 1927. The diarist is Gretchen Ziegler from Milwaukee Wisconsin. Complete with what sounds like a ship board romance with the Captain of the S.S. Cleveland our young woman spends a good deal of time with him; not only on board but also after they dock. His name is Captain Stege and he even signs her diary in the front. She also has another man on board who is very interested in her and seems to be competing for her attention with the captain. Gretchen starts sailing on May 5th and her diary entries end on July 15th while still in Germany. The diary is fully written for 73 pages and then another 30 or so pages in the back where she has written addresses hotels stopped at cash accounts etc. Gretchen is visiting Germany because of her family heritage there. Research indicates she is related in some way to the Oetker family famous for baking powder. They are a very wealthy family and many of her entries have to do with staying on their estate. Among many there is a wonderful entry about her riding a train through Germany and the little girl on the train gives her a four leaf clover. Excerpts from a mere 16 days: "May 5th A.M. Shulled by the mobs. Shared stateroom with a Mrs. Traeger of St. Paul she was exceptionally nice. Table 21 second sitting. Companions Captain Stege formerly of Hamburg American line now living in New York. Mansolff who didn't seem to notice us at lunch but spoke during dinner. Also Mr. Westendarf of Coldwater Mich. who was crossing for the 31st time. Capt. S. gave me a glass of wine at dinner. Uneventful evening did not dance." "May 7th Became acquainted with more of the passengers. Moved my deck chair to the boat deck. Walked around all day. Had a cocktail with Captain S. before dinner. Mosel wine from Mr. M. at dinner both of whom took me to the dance where I had three more cocktails Manhattan. Purser wanted to meet me but did not go up on deck. We sat at the captains table for dinner and he is a charming man. Was down on the list as coming from Mexico. Weather ideal." "May 8th Played shuffleboard. Spent two hours on the bridge from 10 to 12. Capt. ordered a special dish for our luncheon "Schlesisches Himmelieich." consisting of speck prunes dried apricots dumplings and delicious gravy. Tried to sleep on deck but couldn't. My two Romeos took me to the dance. Met Dr. Schwartz who dances divinely. Mosel wine for dinner Champaign for dancing. At dinner Captain S. said "Gott sei dank hente ist Somitag und wird meht getanzt." He was fooled. I probably spelled many of those German words wrong but some of them translate to "God would not be thanks to today" or something like that. "May 10th Were invited by the captain for tea at 4:30. Saw his "Parodies" Eva serpent and apple pictures painted by him etc. Captains said the Cleveland had never learned how to roll

On offer is a handwritten manuscript diary though undated is for 1925 research finds of an extensive train trip from Watertown New York to Los Angeles California our unidentified author a woman in all likelihood in her twenties does the whole tourist experience in California for almost 6 weeks from July 1st through August 14th when the diary ends mysteriously on the return train when she has reached Kansas. She does an admirable job of naming all the travelers she meets and spends even the briefest of time with. Many different experiences from traveling though the Rockies in Las Vegas to the spectacle of movies opening in the movie capitol of the world! A sighting of Robert Montgomery at the train station is one of the highs while sadly the drowning of a young boy is one of the few lows. France. Very Good. 1740. Original Vellum. On offer is a superb original French handwritten manuscript titled "Traite de fortification" circa 1740 bound in contemporary limp vellum. In a fine calligraphic hand this book probably an officer's vade mecum details the epitome of military theory and practice of the era as evidenced by the authors referenced in the manuscript with the greatest frequency being Blondel 1618-1686 and the Comte de Pagan 1604 - 1665. The inclusion of the latter is particularly interesting because the Comte de Pagan is often thought of more as a theoretician than as a practical planner. This also helps date the manuscript as both had influence in military training up until the middle of the eighteenth century which would make our manuscript no later than about 1750. Less frequently mentioned is the writer Mousquet 1633-1707 again suggests an early date reinforcing our circa 1740 or even suggesting it may date from the early part of the eighteenth century. SPAIN Spain Cuba USA Panama Japan. Very Good. 1921. An interesting peek into the daily doings of a sailor whether at sea on trips traversing the world or in the plodding down times during a strike or between ships. This is the 1921 handwritten diary of William D. Goodsmith a merchant sailor home based in Chicago Illinois. William is an Engineer and/or Fireman on the ships he has duty. On his first berth it appears the Doctor and he are closest amongst the crew. Much time spent partying in the rooms when the ocean was quiet. Commencing in Vigo Spain January 1st this is completely full for everyday and it appears almost daily a notation of weather times of arrival and departure sometimes longitude and latitude etc. There is time at sea for the most part but he does spend time in New York between ship assignments. William notes his daily doings movies and even seeing Babe Ruth at The Polo Grounds some shows and other ball games are noted. The year starts in Spain onto Cuba and ends in Japan. Hawaii and Panama were also visited. He was relieved of duty and there are notes about a strike heading toward a cyclone seeing Naval exercises troop movements whale sightings and much much more. Philadelphia PA Denmark Sweden Germany Russia. Very Good. 1872. On offer is the amazing 1872 handwritten manuscript diary of the young Alfred C. Johnson of 727 Pine Street Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Research suggests this is the same man that becomes Consul of the United States at Stuttgart Germany in the future and as late as 1896. Mr. Johnson is a literate observant diarist who details a very interesting life just one year out of school but he writes and shows interests of a middle aged man of going to the theatre Walnut Street is a favorite and opera lectures and speeches and he never fails to mentions both birthdays anniversaries deaths and other important events of his intimate and extended family almost compulsively as in one example of new family member 'Molly' - "Molly is one week old; Molly is two weeks old; Molly is three weeks old" and after one month Molly graduates to monthly notations and European Royalty and other well known historically important European figures for many of whom he has it seems a deep interest and it appears a peripheral relationship. He consistently relates the birthdays of heads of State and their offspring and even makes comments on the character of the individuals. In one fascinating observation he notes a person being born on a specific day in 1801 that he considered a good day and indicative of the man's character. We also deduce that he is likely a much younger sibling of quite a large family as he notes the day his sister Sarah who died at 40 would have been 46 and his brother Theodore is 2 years younger than Sarah. During the year he takes a train to Washington DC for a visit also New York City and later he crosses the Atlantic and visits Hamburg he sees the Emperor of Germany and the King of Prussia the Dutchess of Genoa etc. Denmark Stockholm and Moscow Russia among other places. At one point around Thanksgiving he writes of being glad he is away from home because he is so ashamed of a disgraced family member. At the back of the diary in the memorandum area he notes 20 separate people he needs to bring presents back to America. Here are some snippets: "January 11 - Nellie married that hateful stitch of a James Chester Norris two years ago today and will have her second child about 1st of March. April 29 - Went to see Miss Nilson in Opera of Hamlet with Miss Cary and Brignote music by Thomas. Very fine but does not compare with Mignon. May 24 - Rufus Lawrie came up for first time. Birthday of Queen Victoria born 1819 is 53. June 13 - Sailed in Steamer Hollandia for Hamburg at 2:30. Some very pleasant people on board especially Miss Hearns and some very unpleasant people. Feel a little uncomfortable tonight. Moon light. June 28 - Weather cloudy rain. Took a drive. saw a funeral . and a house covered with black with a a double string of hired mourners in long cloaks and furs. Took train at Albona a small town out of Hamburg at 9:45 pm. Arrived to Thiel at 12 night. Took boat after walking a number of blocks . and she fell on one knee too but did not hurt much. Aug 2 - Arrived in Moscow 11 am Hotel Chevrier. Miserable place. The exposition and largest room without pillows in the world. Afternoon drove for Sparrow Hill where a view of the city is had.Road terrible nearly upset. November 12 - Weather damp rain chilly. Heard of another dreadful fire in Boston this time loss estimated at $1250000. What shall become of us Nothing is sure in this world. Next spring there will be one in Philadelphia and everything we have will be lost." Further research finds his father is Lawrence Johnson b. 1801 his grandfather was Aaron Winder b. 1763. On offer is a super archive of twelve 12 manuscript diaries handwritten by the young personable and talented Ward L Bertholf 1904-1989 of Binghamton New York. The 12 diaries cover 11 years being dated 1921 1922 1923 he had 2 for this year - a very small book he then duplicated into a larger book 1927 then 1933 - 1939 providing a detailed look at the life of this young man over the Roaring Twenties and the Flapper Era through the Depression to pre-World War II America. Ward is in many ways the typical All-American boy-next-door who with humor describes his daily life friends dates family and work. He works as best he can by day and then plays with his band in the evenings. Collectors and historians of the Binghampton area will delight in his writings and the ephemera littered throughout the books with bus and show tickets schedules etc. Students of social studies will also find Ward's evolution from a young playful teenager into married man with all the patent responsibilties rather enlightening. ENID GARFIELD COUNTY OKLAHOMA OK. Very Good. 1920. On offer is an original manuscript 4 year diary handwritten by Ida Belveal an Oklahoma woman who lived in the town of Enid in Garfield County. Rarely missing a day through 1920 - 1923 readers are presented with a perplexing woman in many ways. Ida in four to six sentences selflessly tells us of her daily life as it was after World War I in the 'Roaring 20s'; she was a college student and had many friends and boyfriends; she writes of going to school her studies; dating Chuck breaking up with Chuck; dating and becoming engaged to Carisle then breaking up with Carisle; dating "Prof." Earl W. Oberg breaking it off with "Prof" then dating "O.B." and then back to dating the "Prof" and becoming engaged to him; she also writes of the spats and arguments that she has; playing her violin relining her furs her folks going to the oil fields; going to see a Charlie Chaplin show; taking long vacations/trips with "Prof"; driving to Boston and much more. But the there are the chilling reading at times when she casually writes August 1 1922 'Prof beat me up' and then just as casually her movements through Boston including a trip to the Aquarium and getting the dog fixed in the same entry. Earlier in March of 1922 she writes: 'Prof was mad about my ring. Sorry.' makes for an enigmatic comment amidst banal notations of her day. Did she lose it Did she give it back to him Sociologist and students of Women's or Gender Studies will have a field day profiling this woman's psyche in post World War I Oklahoma. Then there are the references to Klan meetings to make one nervous and quite interesting is that in her entries she makes a point of noting if someone is a "Negro" and she writes of going to see K.K.K. "hunting" a "Negro Meeting"; going to Akron Ohio & meeting the K.K.K. One darkly wonders what a closer read will bring.
