‎NEW YORK NY. Good. 1865. On offer is a fascinating original Civil War Era manuscript note book dated January 1st 1865 through to the last page at December 21st 1865. Handwritten by a very dedicated diarist and Divinity student S.W. Dana at Cooper Union in New York City a mere 5 years or so after the school was founded. Well filled throughout the 125 or so pages Mr. Dana describes his daily life activities sermons written and heard and is also keenly interested in the politics of the day: On April 3rd he announces "It has been a great day for New York City & the country Richmond is ours. We have waited long." On April 15th- "This is a sad day for the loyal people of the United States. The sudden assassination of Pres. Lincoln has shocked the nation." He mentions frequently visiting soldier's barracks and often delivering sermons. The 6.5" x 8" marble board covers are detached but present. On offer are two 2 fascinating mid 20th Century travel diaries handwritten by Stanley Wade Baron a Philadelphia born 1922 American novelist and art critic who was also a gifted pianist. Baron worked in the US Embassy in London as a political analyst but in 1950 he resolved to become a writer and spent two years in Europe. His time was productive leading to two novels: 'End of the Line' and 'All My Enemies' and some candid reminiscences entitled 'People and Americans: A Memoir of Transatlantic Tourists'. In 1954 while in Majorca he wrote another novel 'The Facts of Love' about a spoiled but charming American woman in Paris and her exasperating treatment of men. These two diaries make for a fascinating glimpse into a privileged literary travelling life in post War Europe and America. These diaries for historians and researchers provide an unparalleled glance in Mr. Baron's psyche as he is ever analytical and has a keenly observant eye balanced between a pragmatic political observer and an ever open minded artistic brain. His thought processes are simply remarkable in many ways. Here is an example: "Not too cold particularly this am. Reading David Copperfield which reads admirably like autobiography the beginning certainly like Tristam Shandy though less fantastic. What makes the Heeps so awful love of girl children one of unconscious themes. Are there really too many characters so many simply thrown away so I suspect some that seems wrong we will have their uses later. In David Copperfield the reliance on coincidence D. seeing Michamber on the street while taking tea with the Heeps D running in to Steerforth at London pub en route to Yarmouth. Dickens does not flinch of these things. Miss Mowember the cosmetician dwarf an amazing creation but has she a purpose and doesn't she reminds one of the dollmaker Fanny Claiming Jenny Wren in Our Mutual Friend Is there a case for saying Dickens uses practice characters who he later perfects" As to the two books proper: His first diary written while travelling includes entries made in London France Majorca and Tangiers. It details his social life his writing plotting and reading and his state of health. He meets such notables as Paul Bowles Elsa Maxwell Speed Lamkin Gwen Ffrangcon-Davis Esme Percy Trevor Howard Duff Cooper Anne and Mohamed Mehdevi and others. He describes his visit to two bull-fights and his travels by sea train and car. The 6 x 4 inch book has approximately 135 or so pages well filled and written in a precise small hand. Overall G. The second diary is written while the author is in America and includes trips to New York and Boston. He writes about his very active social life his writings and refers to books he is reading such as David Copperfield offering his insights and opinions regarding the style the characters and the author's rationale. ‎HMS IRON DUKE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN THE BLACK SEA. Fair. 1919. On offer is a fascinating significant original manuscript relic of post World War I politics strife and continuing aggression and wars being a 140 page diary handwritten by Frederick J. Chivers A.B of Coventry England who served on the famed HMS IRON DUKE during the period of 1919 to 1920 as inscribed in his own hand on the ffep. We note finding a 1914 Navy Gazette listing for a Frederick J. Chivers RMLI Royal Marines Light Infantry. If the same man we wonder at his diary notation of A.B or Able Seaman. Did he change duties after WWI We believe Chivers was also a DSM Distinguished Service Medal recipient. The storied formidable HMS IRON DUKE Flagship of the Fleet at the Battle of Jutland in World War I and during the period this diary covers the Iron Duke was still operating in historic times and in a leading role. Flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet the ship is bound for Gibraltar then Malta and eventually through the Aegean to the Black Sea through the Dardanelles in the thick of the Russian Civil War and the Greco Turkish War. Chivers writes page after page of significant reportage from a man on the deck and close to command observing Admirals and aware of the significance of orders and not merely a keen observer but also some analysis of the actions of which there are many. He records the IRON DUKE'S part in the Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War skirmishes with the Bolsheviks the sinking of a Russian destroyer the destruction of Russian submarines interactions with various Admirals and other Royal Navy ships Russian volunteer armies etc and references to her role in the Greco-Turkish war which saw the ship take part in the evacuation of Smyrna. Chivers also details much of the Fleet actions and the Iron Duke's interactions meetings with other of His Majesty's Ship and ships of other nations. Also included is the photograph of the crew of HMS Iron Duke though it has seen better days. We can only speculate which of the crew was the author of this remarkable personal account of these significant events. The approximately 6.75" x 4.25" book has hinges that have rusted and split the spine from inside but all the pages are present a few have light pencil scribble but nothing that would affect reading. On offer is a copy of the book 'Ships of the Royal Navies' by Oscar Parkes which lists all the ships used by the Royal Navies providing photos and general information about the ships with an interesting association. This particular book was owned by the marine author Basil Lubbock who added a couple of dozen or so handwritten notes on the fates of a number of these ships during World War II. For example for the aircraft carrier Courageous there is the following note "Sunk by German submarine on 18th Sept 1939 big loss of life". For the battleship Hood "June 1941 an unlucky shot from Bismark blew her up". BIO NOTES: One online source provides: "Alfred Basil Lubbock M.C. 1876 - 1944 British sailor yachtsman and marine author He wrote extensively on maritime matters particularly the latter days of sail including a wealth of detail and personal reminiscences collected from experience on numerous square-rig masters which made him an authority on the subject he was a member of the Society for Nautical Research. He fought during the Boer War of 1899-1901 with the Royal Field Artillery and Menne's Scouts. During WWI he served with the Wessex Brigade Royal Field Artillery in India and France. He was awarded the Military Cross. Basil Lubbock was the founder and first Commodore 1919 to 1931 Hamble River Sailing Club. He was a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. Articles by Lubbock appeared over the years in The Blue Peter the Mariner's Mirror and other journals." ‎BUDAPEST HUNGARY EASTERN EUROPE. Good. 1916. On offer is a fascinating significant 1916 manuscript relic of World War I being the personal diary of Louis Goeth Dreyfus Jr. 1889-1973 an American diplomat in Budapest during the time of World War I when the city was central to and at one of the most critical junctures of history. While the book is not inscribed or signed we note the author's identity is revealed on September 22nd: "Rainy morning. Didn't go to office until 11 A.M. Mr. Coffin shows me a telegram from the Dep't saying Mr. Dreyfus be spared for a month to take charge at Sofia during Consul General Murphy's absence for illness. Mr. Coffin again showed his selfish instincts by so far as possible injuring my chances of going. He replied that he cannot spare Dreyfus until Oct. tenth." The 285 page book has handwritten entries dated from January 1st through October 11th 1916 at the peak of the first World War and as the denouement of the Austro Hungarian empire was approaching our author from his singularly unique perspective noted and described his daily life especially at the consulate detailing the status of the wartime situation in Austria-Hungary with it's neighbors close and far his meeting and dining with other Consuls learning to speak Hungarian playing tennis and billiards and looking at pretty women. Only 27 and well into the beginnings of a rich and successful career his entries show a savvy observer in Dreyfus from a unique perspective notes the status of the war progress or stalemates and many tart observations on Kitchener Sir Edward Grey and others. He is sometimes critical of William Coffin the Consul General. He travels to Vienna and various places in Hungary occasionally with Coffin but often with Donald M. Ingram the Vice Consul and usually his constant companion. Dreyfus contemplated leaving the diplomatic corps but was appointed Consul Class VIII on 16 July 1916. Here is a snippet from beginning which exemplifies this young man's well written narrative: "For several years back mother has been urging me keep a diary to record the interesting events of every day. I must now admit that such an outline of my activities in Peru and especially at Quibdo in the Jungle of Colombia and at Berlin where I was in charge of the Consulate General at the outbreak of the European war would in later years afford very pleasant reading. It is true that there are many occurrences in my work which are of such a nature that for political reasons it is necessary to leave them unrecorded. For example the Ancona matter has at last been adjusted by the satisfactory reply of the Government at Vienna published on December 31st. The excitement and uncertainty to which we have been subjected the instructions of the Government in the matter and many other details could not be entered in my diary unless it were best kept in the office safe." The 6½ x 4¼ inch diary ends October 11th when Dreyfus leaves for Sofia Bulgaria. The black cloth 'Naplo Agenda' diary with Hungarian language monthly names pencil still attached is overall VG. Extensive BIO NOTES follow the description. While there is no place or ownership name in the book extensive research with the myriad of clues provided conclude the book was undoubtedly written by Edna. Edna proves to be a dedicated writer until July 5th then skips two months until August 5th then through December. The family takes a road trip to visit Edna's family in Shelby Ohio leaving Spokane June 14th. She writes long entries nearly every day while on the road. They camp along the way in vacant houses and lots churchyards alongside railroad tracks in schoolhouses cactus fields cannery yards etc and once in a great while they stay at a hotel. She would write about the condition of the roads her father being in the business created the fascination we suppose. Twenty days later they arrive in Shelby. She doesn't write while in Shelby but August 5th they start back and she writes from then on until December 31st which includes the road trip home. Here are some snippets: 1917 "January 1st Dr. got back from Missoula. Wish everybody a Happy New Year. My boy leaves me tonight. I hate to have him go. Fixed all his clothes up nice for him. I went to the train. Helen had company and Dr. was sick not able to go." "February 21st Just hustled around and cleaned the house up for the German Club. They want to dance some work believe me. Everything is fine and dandy. Time and lots of good eats they furnished themselves." "March 31st Finished everything up and ready for Richard's homecoming. Went to market in the evening and then to meet Richard. Quite a crowd down to greet him." "April 6th Cleaned the house up nice. Went over to Edith's to look at chickens. In P.M. went to look at trailer. They are certainly swell but I don't care for it on our trip. In eve went to Liberty. Richard and Helen was out riding." "April 29th We went to CordelaneCoeur d'alene to see boat christened. Stopped at Post Falls to John's for dinner and had a swell dinner. Went on to C'd with he and family. Edith took her car also. We got home about six o'clock." "May 27th We were all over to Edith's for dinner and had such a nice time. Mr. Aten also. We took a long ride to look at property and also went to Liberty Lake before coming home. It was a beautiful day. In eve we all went to the Casino to see George Walsh." "June 14th All off at 10:00 A.M. Great trip ahead of us. We left Edith's at 11 A.M. Went to Sandpoint then Heron. Camped one mile on the other side of Heron. Enjoyed it immensely. The roads were just dandy. Arrived at Missoula at 7:30 P.M. Met Oscar. He stocked us up just fine with good drinks. We ate and found a campground about 10:30. Was tired and slept well. The scenery is wonderful along. Swell roads." "June 17th 1917. Left Harrison Montana at 8 A. M. after good nights sleep. Went over some of the worst roads I ever saw. Helen and I walked most of the way over the pass. Richard shoveled snow and made a path. The roads were so sidling he had to hold on the high side of the car while Dr. was driving. We pitched camp and the mosquitoes were awful. We made a big smoke and got rid of them but nearly froze toward morning over 7000 ft. Alt." "June 20th & 21st We left Reed Point about 7 A.M. after breakfast. One bad mud hole but we got through O.K. and found the roads pretty rough. Some terrible ruts. About 10 miles from Park City we discovered two broken springs in front. Some bad luck. Was delayed there 5 hrs. Started out found Huntley Bridge washed out went over the worst roads you ever saw and broke the same front spring. It wasn't fixed right. Staid Huntley all night. Had spring fixed there next morning. Camped in the city….Left Huntley at 11 A.M. after fixing spring. All bridges are washed out at Custer Meyers can't get across river. Went over the worst hills and roads through ditches gopher holes and everything imaginable. Met Mr. Wright of Helena and he helped us by lessening our load. Three of us rode in his car. We were so glad because we would have gotten lost in the fields. We went 116 miles and was on the trail just 15 miles in all. A terrible day. We will never forget. Mr. W. took us to dinner and we staid at hotel." Klussman one of the well-known and highly successful representatives of the medical fraternity of Spokane whose office is located in the Granite building was born in Elliston Ohio on the 13th of April. 1878. He is a son of Dr. F. J. and Margaret A. Apel Klussman the father being a prominent physician of Toledo Ohio while the mother is a daughter of John Apel of Bowling Green that state the owner of extensive oil interests in that vicinity. After the completion of his preliminary education Dr. Klussman entered the Ohio Normal University at Ada Ohio being graduated from that institution with the degree of Ph. G. in 1896. Having decided to adopt the profession of his father for his life vocation he subsequently matriculated in the Kentucky .School of Medicine at Louisville that state being awarded the degree of M. D. with the class of 1900. Dr. Klussman was an unusually bright and clever pupil seemingly having been endowed with an exceptional natural aptitude in this direction and in his junior and senior years in college he was assistant clinical demonstrator on genitourinary diseases. Immediately following his graduation he came to Spokane as assistant to Dr. C. P. Thomas with whom he remained until the following October when he opened his own office which he has ever since maintained. On offer is an interesting original 1935 manuscript diary handwritten by early San Fernando resident Los Angeles school teacher and gold miner George H. Prince. Born sometime in 1864 thusly 71 years old at this writing the hugely energetic ambitious gold miner fills the diary with his work successes usually using sluice boxes as George his family and associates find numerous gold nuggets with super detail from January 1 1935 through to March 11th when he returns to San Fernando Valley. April to July he works taking fishing parties out of Huntington Beach and by July 27th they move their gold mining operation to the forks of the South Salmon River in Siskiyou County. George returns to Burbank August 25 1935. His final entry reads "144 days spent in the mountains helping gold mining for which I received $130.95 and board." George H. Prince was also a successful fruit grower in the San Fernando Valley perhaps the gold mining was an attempt to find more income during the depression or perhaps he was driven by the gold bug. ‎SS ADRIATIC AMERICA CANADA. Good. 1876. On offer is a super original May to September 1876 manuscript diary handwritten by Charles M. Dawson the son of British wool manufacturer Mark Dawson. Only 18 years old the tour to the US and Canada was undertaken to build up the confidence and experience of the scion of a successful enterprise. We note this trip was a prelude to a much longer undertaking in 1877 - 1878 when he visited China to sight-see conduct business but mostly to assess the market on behalf of his father's firm Mark Dawson & Sons of Bradford England worsted spinners est. 1848. We list these diaries separately Seller ID #0002187. Using a small 3 x 4 inch gilt edged undated note book with worn marbleized covers titled 'Log of my Journeyings in America and Canada from May 23rd 1876 Private' has approximately 115 pages of entries one cannot fail to be impressed by the maturity and composure of this young man who does a fine job of describing his voyage and his observations of all that he experiences. Adding further depth are a small number of illustrations by the young Dawson who is already quite and accomplished artist. We have a sketchbook he created much later in life. Beginning May 24 1876 leaving on the SS Adriatic from Liverpool we learn of seasickness whales icebergs and the death aboard ship of a young man in the last stage of consumption. Then to New York where his North American sojourn begins. Here are some snippets: Thursday Sept. 28 "This day being Pennsylvania Day all the stores were closed the streets were lined with bunting and flags as fine as are the 4th July - Geo having nothing to do he I set out early for the Exposition. We arrived there with great difficulty as every possible means of conveyance was crammed. The crowd at the Centennial was something fearful. Every passage and aisle was crowded to suffocation. We rambled around somehow nearly all day. We had a fine look in a Turkish café smoking long pipes and houkahas drinking coffee etc. We created a great sensation." ‎AUSTINBURG OHIO ASHTABULA COUNTY. Good. 1934. On offer is an interesting group of five 5 manuscript diaries exemplifying the life of a prosperous farmer's wife and her family in Depression Era and pre-war middle America. Handwritten by Daisy H Woods nee Herrick wife to Mr. George Woods and mother to Dwight and John. Daisy and her family reside in Austinburg Township Ashtabula Ohio and her diaries span January 1st 1934 - December 25 1939 with the exception of her 1936 diary which is absent. Daisy is in her mid-40s a well-meaning Christian who far too often misses church! and the backbone of her comfortable hard-working family. Daisy's diaries paint a fascinating picture of rural life in the early 20th century Ohio living on a busy farm that backs into an large wooded expanse wherein the farm runs all year around - gardening and berry picking in the summer canning in the fall preparing and selling animals in the winter and tapping for maple syrup in the spring. Each family member plays a role. The boys and men work tirelessly building ploughing feeding animals and helping neighbouring farmers in exchange for help on their own land. The women or in this case the woman Daisy works too. She is the family sales representative making near-daily trips to nearby Geneva and "Ash" which is where she goes when she goes into town to sell the farm's bounty. Daisy sells butter cream chicken maple syrup and sausage and proudly records what she has sold each trip in her diary. She is also the chronicler of the weather. The day's weather tends to begin most of her journal entries. She is also a proud and loving mother who frets when her eldest son Dwight is away from home working and rejoicing when he returns home for visits or to stay and work. Since Dwight and husband George are away so often Daisy babies young John who she brings with on most of her outings to town and coddles when he becomes ill allowing him to stay home from school for longer than he needs to on a few occasions. The Woods family offers an alternative view on life during The Great Depression. They are not victims of the Depression. Rather they are thriving. They own a car a Dodge they wash their clothes in a washing machine they buy pigs from the neighbours and pick up odds and ends on most of their trips to town Daisy hosts traveling salesmen and considers purchases such as the Singer brand sweeper which she claims she "doesn't like at all". Through visitors to the Woods' home and farm readers are introduced to many of the local families of Austinberg Ohio. We meet the Hendersons the Goodwins the Warrens the Ranbels and many many more. Daisy's is something of a hub of social gatherings to the point that she will make frustrated note on days that she does not receive visitors. Perhaps this is why Daisy is so interesting. She is the consummate mother and hostess yet she bucks gender norms in other ways. Stated plainly Daisy just doesn't like to work very hard. Of course she churns butter. Of course she cleans and bakes. But…a common day for Daisy is one where she writes about bustling around and accomplishing little followed by a meticulous summary of how back breakingly hard the men of the house labored. For example on August 1st 1938 she describes the hard labour her sons and husband engaged in all day long and concludes with "I didn't do much all day". She makes plans she gest distracted the day passes her by yet her boys and husband are often gone for days at a time working in the woods on the farm in the fields. Daisy's affinity for avoiding work is exemplified during the months of January-March 1937 when the Woods family take in victims of the Ohio Flood of 1937. Daisy's friends Nerlie and Martha come to stay along with their husbands and children. The husbands help on the farm and Nerlie and Martha do Daisy's chores. In fact it's not until January 27 1937 that Daisy even alludes to the reason her friends and staying with her when she states "this flood disaster is getting worse and worse". Prior to that she simply lists off who did the ironing washing and cleaning each day. Later she gives more detail about the assistance she and her family gave to the flood victims but by late-February Daisy becomes bored with the charity and frustrated with her guests' children. On February 28 1937 14-year-old Jack is kept home from school sick by his mother and Daisy states "Jack stayed home sick Was able to watch every move any of us made…" funny because she would often keep her own son John home sick for any number of reasons!. Daisy finally finds relief on March 5: "well they finally got moved got away about noon". Daisy has kept a thorough and detailed account of her life and the life of the men she loves the friends she chats with and the world she inhabits. Her diaries give life the farmers of Ohio and to a class of people who work hard and manage to avoid the pitfalls of the Depression thriving when others flailed. All of the Woods diaries are in very good condition and in the back of some of them she has kept a ledger of funds in and out which give a sense of the commerce of the time. It is easy to imagine Daisy and John in Geneva selling butter and noting the buyer and the price in the back of the diary. ‎ABOARD THE HMS ARGUS. Good. 1873. On offer is an original significant 1873 through 1879 manuscript diary and scrapbook memoir of one 'Blue Jacket's' service in the Royal Navy. Handwritten by Thomas Pilcher Pritchard's 1851-1932 who retrospectively begins detailing his early naval career under Earl De Gray and Ripon in 1867 Lord Hardinge in 1869 the cutter Raglan in 1872 until March 1873 when Pritchard joins the HMS Argus. Pritchard's 120 page narrative together with pasted in photograph newspaper cuttings tipped in over manuscript and colour prints of flags describes an enviable career for those salty 'tars' that seek to see the world: Madeira St. Vincent Cape Coast West Africa he transfers from the Argus to HMS Dromedary for a spell and then back Lagos Ascension Bermuda Halifax Nova Scotia Barbados Demerara South American ports Newport and Providence Rhode Island and back to the West Indies including Barbados and Jamaica Havana Nassau Tobago and Bermuda the St. Lawrence River and Quebec in Canada finally returning to Portsmouth in 1877. Jack Aubrey and Horatio Hornblower's crews have nothing over Pritchard! The journal continues to 1879 when he is on half pay and working in dockyards. Great descriptions abound on the places visited shipboard crew and local shore life HMS Argus' involvement in a number of conflicts. Here are some snippets: "13 June 1873: 'joined the boats of H.M. ships Barracoutta Druid Sea Gull Decoy and others and went ashore up the river and anchored off the town of Elmina close to the houses and in sight of some thousands of natives who were all armed and waiting for us to begin. At 12 at noon the first shot was fired and we kept up continually firing shells and rockets for about and hour by this time the town was in flames and the cries of the women and children mixed with that of pigs goats sheep dogs &c was almost defening in the midst of this confusion we landed and drove every one who had stopped out of the town shot some made several prisoners and came on board in the evening tired out the heat in the day was something awfull. The Town burnt for about a week over two hundred bodies were buried in a large hole and there must have been several hundred wounded. Loss to the English one marine of H.M.S. Barracoutta.' There is an extended nine page description of engagements and casualties in the Third Anglo-Ashanti War: 29 April 1876 'Saturday arrived at Barbados . Landed the troops there has been an insurrection here the rebels have burnt and destroyed a lot of property mostly sugar plantations and killing the cattle several lives lost and lots of prisoners' …… 'Saturday May 6th 1876. HMS Argus arrived at the island of Tobago …. there is a row on here the same as Barbadoes the rebels threatening the town of Scarborough. Sunday May 6th took on board the Governor and others and steamed full speed to another part of the islands arrived in the full noon rig of the day blew working rig white capcovers. Monday our boats brought off several prisoners one woman charged with murder…. Tuesday 9th took on board nine prisoners taken on shore and landed twenty armed men eight blue jackets and the gunners mate and ten marines and a sergeant in charge of our first lieutenant and left them on shore .' Pritchard does a yeoman job as a diarist adding much depth describing his social life his strong religious convictions church going at Wesleyan chapels and of no surprise as a naval rating he frequently 'got drunk' as he openly noted had fights and mayhaps the odd time he wakes up in a cell. He took himself in hand by joining temperance organisations in 'Bermuda…. Dec19th 1874 …. joined Providence Lodge No.3 of the Independent Order of Good Templars Bermuda'. Other lodges were joined at other ports of call and back in England. He meets many ladies with special mention of Miss Constance Miles of Halifax Nova Scotia with whom he develops a close relationship and corresponds regularly. The pages proper have some marking and light soiling text block loosened and detached from covers and some frayed on the right hand margins. The 8 x 6 inch cloth-backed board is worn. Overall Fair. BIO NOTES: Thomas Pilcher Pritchard was born in Swanage Dorset in 1851 the son of a seaman and sailmaker Charles Pilcher Pritchard b.1823 and wife Hannah the portrait photo from the journal is I believe of his father Charles. His early life was spent in the navy the most significant years of which 1873-1877 are covered in the journal. Upon his return from active service Pritchard in 1880 married Alice Crossman Rogers b.1857 in Portsea the daughter of William Fuller Rogers a butcher and Jane Crossman. They settled in Portsmouth and had 8 children 6 of whom survived into adulthood their details are recorded in the rear of the journal. Thomas died in Portsmouth in 1932 at the age of 81 and his wife Alice in 1937 at the age of 79. HISTORICAL NOTES: HMS Argus was a wooden-hulled paddle sloop launched in 1849 and broken up in 1881. She took part in engagements on the Pekin and Taku forts 1858 - 1860 and was a transport during the Abyssinian Expedition in 1866. ‎JOBSTOWN NEW JERSEY TO THE FRONT IN FRANCE. Good. 1918. "Ernest Cook is my name/America is my nation/Jobstown NJ is dwelling place/And God is my Salvation/When I am dead and in my grave/And all my bones have rotten/This little book will tell my name/When I am long forgotten." So begins the diary on offer; a fascinating manuscript diary handwritten by a sensitive young soldier named Ernest Cook March 3 1895 - March 1972 who bravely fought on the front lines for America near the end of World War I. This 5 year diary a Christmas gift from his lady friend Alice D. Shinn as per inscription Makes for an interesting comparison between his life in each year - a life that changes dramatically with the conclusion of the War I. Beginning January 1918 we learn that Ernest is a 22-year-old member of 303rd Field Signal Battalion Company B in the US Army. Not yet on active duty they are stationed near Cook's home in New Jersey and his writings reflect monotonous days of inspections drills evenings at the YMCA with friends and visits with family. Cook is often sent to work with the horses in the stables and is no stranger to hard labor yet he is a sensitive young man as indicated by multiple entries indicating his insecurity about how friends and superiors feel about him. On January 9 1918 he writes: "Inspection…Room orderly worked hard. I got very discouraged. My only comfort at home was thinking I had a few friends". Again on Valentine's Day 1919 his sensitivity and youth shine through: "Valentines from home and Violet and May. Fatigue duty very muddy. Physical exercises. Disappointed to the core. Snyder disliked me on a pass. Had a date with Alice". While he struggles to succeed at work he maintains a healthy interest in the opposite sex evidenced by his description of watching "fellows loveing couple of girls in barracks next door" and his tales of juggling multiple women such as the day he received a 'funny little letter from Ms. Kirby Riverside…date with Alice and Hilda'. Things change for Ernest's Company in late February 1918 with the draft of many new men. On February 23 he describes 150 newly drafted men coming in and observes some of these new rookies as they struggle to fit in. On March 3 1918 Ernest has his 23rd birthday and just a week later he writes that there have been "rumours of moving". These rumours do not materialize until late May 1918 when Ernest's company moves to Europe. On May 26 1918 Ernest's company is called to ship out and they are on deck in "our battleship" by the afternoon of May 27. Their journey to England is treacherous. Cook describes intense sea sickness and his ship narrowly avoiding a torpedo strike. He finally arrives in England on June 8 after "sailing the Irish Sea" and here begins the most fascinating part of this diary - not just Cook's riveting tales of war but also the contrast of Ernest Cook soldier and Ernest Cook 23-year-old young man. His entries swing dramatically from militaristic on June 21st: "Took office over from the British. Had many an argument with the Townies and don't like them" to youthful on June 25th when he went "To visit a French Madammoisella". Cook's summer of 1918 is a melting pot of air raids and parties. Fighting and fun. As summer winds down Cook experiences his first major loss with the death of company member Leland S. Clancy on August 19 1918. He writes "lost L. Clancy by drowning. Very sad". He doesn't have very much time to process this loss as his company is moved out of England to France at the end of August. His company slowly makes its way to the front lines. On September 13 the horror of war creeps into his entry: "Thousands of prisoners coming in. We hike all night to try and keep up to Infantry. Heavy firing. First real sight of death of war dead men and horses". Between September 19-October 2 1918 he is on the front lines of the war and does not write anything. We find out later that is company loses many men and he is given increasing responsibility. Finally on October 3rd they are moved out of the line of fire and his writing resumes. His entry on October 3rd is simple: "Back to company moved out of the lines. Hiked all night and Hopkins lost my pack. The horse died on the road". In early November there are a pair of entries that exemplify the spirit of Ernest Cook: Nov 3 "Austrians lay down their guns" Nov 4 "Howie tied my pajamas all up in knots". Cook is in Blois France when the war ends. On November 11 1918 he writes with enthusiasm that "the Armistice signed. Howie Mac and I out in big parade everybody going wild….walked until I couldn't stand". The enthusiasm is short-lived as Cook and his company are stuck in France cold in the barracks until January 14th when they are finally given a ship to return home. Once again Cook writes about debilitating sea sickness. Finally on January 22 1919 Cook "Saw the lights of dear old N.Y. about 6pm and oh boy the cheers. I clinked to a life where I could see the dear old country and not be bothered". Then the next day: "Mayor out to meet us. Pulled in docks at 12 noon unloaded 2pm. All organizations welcomed us with eats such was great. Teleg. Mother. Up on ferry then a train to Merritt". The rest of the diary which Cook maintains until April 15 1919 details a post-war life of job offers work in Lewiston and lots and lots of new women to date! While Cook ends his diary in the spring of 1919 there is I entry he has dated 1920 that gives us the sense that he is happy in his new post-war life. This diary is a tribute to the boys and men who fought in World War I for America. It is an in-depth look at the life of a soldier both on the battlefield and off. Historians and researchers of World War I personal accounts will delight in Ernest's frank practical account of experiencing the atrocities of war and the sharing of emotional expressions on how he is affected as he comes of age. Handwritten primarily in Hebrew by Amnon Ish-Shalom H/MX 595216 who lived at Hayeshiva Street in Jerusalem begins Monday September 18th 1944 through to September 1945 to detail his personal and service duties in the small though near full 3½ x 2½ inch book in Hebrew. Ironically we note his name Ish-Shalom translates to Man-of Peace. His personal details and his experiences as a Jewish soldier who was recruited from volunteers in the Jewish community in what was then British Mandated Palestine are herein given in this very rare personal account. Historians and researchers will find Amnon's writings filled with technical and personal details; places he served army units military courses meetings members and all manner of his experience. The text block is pulling back from the cover but still intact and overall G. BIO NOTES: One online source provides: Amnon Ish-Shalom b. 1925 who served in the Palmach and the Royal British Navy. 1940s. Ish-Shalom fought in Gush Etzion with the Jerusalem HISH companies. Ish-Shalom suffered a head injury and was taken as prisoner by the Jordanians upon the Gush Etzion surrender one day prior to the declaration of the State of Israel. He was discharged from prison on February 22 1949. On offer is a superb though flawed original manuscript 1891 - 1892 travel diary detailing day to day life workings and aboard a 3 masted schooner sailing to the 'far side of the world' from New York City to Hong Kong and back. Inscribed in a later hand: 'Uncle Fred Hartford's Diary on Board The Sterling Capt. Geo. Goodwin 1891 - 1892 Voyage from New York to Hong Kong by Sailing Ship 196 days'. 'The Sterling' commanded by Captain George Goodwin and this extended trip to the Far East and back are told over approximately 181 intact pages numbered page 3 - 184 with several loose pages a small number of fragments a 'supplement' notebook two letters of correspondence a photo of the ship and a twentieth century envelope bearing pertinent data and provenance written by family it appears on the outside. Genealogical notes on the envelope name Uncle Fred Hartford as a relative to the Captain inasmuch each man married cousins we think! who were sisters of the grandmother to the note writer!! Flaws fuzzy familial connection and all do not change the fact that the narrative is packed with details of life under sail as the author gives a day to day account starting with the position or location weather and any and all interesting observations or occurrences. It would seem he has some knowledge of the sea and ship board life describing the sailor's handling of the backstays and other easy references to nautical nomenclature. But he also seems to delight in some new enjoyments like sitting up high in the mizzenmast. Maiden voyage or not Fred does a super job delivering a true picture of life aboard as he strives to bring the experience to life for the folks back home. They encounter some rather bad weather; discuss trading coconuts with natives in an almost hilarious scene to the natives at least to going on a 'pick nick' in Hong Kong the narrative is unique: Uncle Fred holds the benighted position of a working 'Guest' of the Captain. He spends much time working through a cigar on deck with George discussing the folks back home to who he is actually addressing as if one long huge letter. As to his duties he appears to act as ship's purser being in charge of the 'slops chest' and having some part in negotiating with the natives. Anyone familiar with the Master and Commander series will see a like situation between Captain Aubrey and his particular friend Dr. Maturin. The paper is somewhat brittle being the reason there was some fragmentation but we cannot account for the loss of the fist three pages. ‎ASEA. Good. 1911. On offer is the original pre-World War I and early commencement of the War manuscript diary of Commander Alfred Frederick Bell "AFB" Woodhouse Royal Navy. Entries date from June - August 1911 and May 1914 - April 1915 providing a unique pre-War commentary and then leading up to the actual conflict. Woodhouse begins on HMS Fantome off north west coast of Australia surveying: ".Shifted camp to Byron Islands for 4 days. Got there by 11am. Comber went away sounding in steamboat. I first saw the camp rigged up & then went away coastlining in 2 whaler.Away coastlining again at 7am nearly finished Byron Islands by evening. Enormous number of small islands had to be put in.Coastlining longcreek about 5 miles in & then small mangrove swamp.Dozens of flies about appallingly stung.Practically no sleep last night owing to bites. Away 7am started near Beehive. Fixed one point & when turning found myself in whirlpool pass. Went down with flood. Whaler hole in side. Camp - no rum no sugar no flour no tea very little water.". Then HMS Research May 1914 off Ireland and Scotland: ".Weighed at 9.30 after the first mail had come on board & proceeded to the entrance to Wexford. Picked up tide pole & then to Blackwater Bank. Went away in motor boat with Hazlefoot but too misty to see anything. Returned at 3.30 & ship started for Larne. Then HMS King Alfred August 1914: ".After dinner joined King Alfred from Research as my war appointment.We are at present ammunitioning & getting ready as quickly as possible. Invincible in harbour. List of officers.12 Midnight War declared against Germany.My first gun crew do not appear to know much about their drill but they are enthusiastic which is something & I have an excellent gun-layer.Submarine gun crews told off & stationed.Everyone pleased we are getting away but do not know where we are to go. Azores seems popular.Received orders to proceed to Scapa Flow.Ships here are all King Edwards 1st Battle Cruiser Squadron. Result 2 German L cruisers & 2 destroyers sunk 1 L cruiser & several destroyers badly damaged.At 6.30 suddenly sounded off night defence stations. Falmouth had seen a submarine following the G into harbour & had waited till her conning tower came up & then fired at her. On offer is a very interesting and intriguing 1886 manuscript diary dated July 11th 1886 through to December 25th 1886 handwritten by a young woman named Sherburne M. Graham of we believe New Jersey. Her passing references to Whale Creek Keyport the boat Wm. E. Bishop assuredly pinpoint New Jersey as her locale. Historians and collectors of the place and times will find this diary unique inasmuch that Miss Graham brings a soap opera quality to her writings describing the politics back stabbing inter personal relations and gossip that occurs at work in a retail store. Upon her return from a vacation she writes that she is worried that while away from the store 'some serious mistake discovered during my absence and for which I would get a laying out.' She then admits to poor work ethic prior to her vacation as she was disconsolate she was refused a raise. The back drop of her family: a preacher father and an ill mother and her other close personal relationships add to the narrative. In one example her father calls in an allopathic doctor for her mother. After some time the Doctor performs an "operation" on her mother who had a side abscess. The doctor had been treating her to no avail and after several days gave her some ether and lanced her side after the gruesome description he said he thought he had accidentally cut the intestines. This diary records this man's work thoughts and personal part and actions in his military service and the camps he attended throughout 1966 to 1969. ‎Liao Village Yong Qing County HeBei Province PEO. Good. 1960. On offer is an extraordinary original historically significant 139 page manuscript archive of Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution handwritten by a man named Liao Zi Yu of Liao Village Yong Qing County HeBei Province was born in 1912 worked as a proof-reader at the printing works the HeBei Agriculture University from 1951 to 1973. The Liao family owned 1400 Mu of the land before 1937 and it also owned a shop selling fabrics. Liao ZiYu inherited properties including land of 710 Mu brick house with 30 rooms mud house with 3 rooms 6 large animals and 2 man-powered vehicles. He started to manage the family affairs in 1934 together with his brother who was killed by the Japanese in 1938. He then worked alone till 1946 when the Land Reform reached the area. At the onset of Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution landlords and capitalists in the urban and rural centres were identified and accused of exploiting and oppressing the working class. Overthrowing the exploiting and oppressing class was a primary concern of Chairman Mao and the Communist Party of China. Mao pushed the Chinese into a civil war in order to overthrow the Republic of China which succeeded and the result People's Republic of China in 1949. Mao then began to liquidate and suppress those persons who belonged to the exploiting class. This was known as the 'Movement of Suppressing Counter-Revolutionaries' in early 1950's in China. In this archive we follow Liao Zi Yu's attempt to avoid being suppressed as a member of the exploiting class and a counter-revolutionary by moving and concealing his real identity. He lived hidden and got work as a common labourer for more than ten years from 1949. But early on in the Cultural Revolution his real identity was disclosed as was his former life as a landlord. From that time on his was a doomed life: investigated jailed and forced to confess his crime this file recorded the complete process. RESEARCH NOTES: He was accused of 1 Exploitation of the workers: He employed 7 long term workers 6 monthly ones 4 to 5 short term ones and 4 others for the house duties. He owned 5 pieces of gun. He exploited the workers brutally. 2 Exploitation of the land rental: He rented out over half of his land holdings with rent up to 4 Yuan per Mu. The rent must be paid before October for next year's rental. He forced the peasants to pay the rent using the power of his uncle who was the town's Reeve. 3 Serving the enemy: He was the town secretary of AnCi County for a month by making anticommunist slogans such as "Welcome the Nationalist Army". 4 Escaping the supervised labour: He got a job at the HeBei Agriculture University by falsifying his résumé and hiding the fact that he was a land owner. He was put into the supervised reform by the revolutionary mass in 1966 soon after the exposure of him as a landowner. He was moved by the policies of the communist party and was able to admit his crime and made confession. He was not classified as the landowner but would be expelled from the University and be sent back to his home village to work as a farmer. The decision was reached by the committees of the communist party at the levels of the printing works the University and the District of BaoDing in a period from 1970 to 1973. ‎Good. 1918. On offer is a very interesting manuscript relic of WWI with a unique connection and association to American investor of renown Warren Buffet and his company Berkshire Hathaway being a handwritten notebook on trench warfare compiled by Seabury Stanton in March and April of 1918. Seabury Stanton would later be a Director of Berkshire Hathaway until he was fired by Warren Buffet during a confrontation over the tender offer price of the company's stock which resulted in taking over Berkshire Hathaway in 1964. Seabury Stanton figures prominently in the history of the Berkshire Hathaway Company and was a 50 year employee of the company when he left the company in 1964. Accounts vary as to whether he was fired or quit but he had been the director when Buffet gained controlling interest and was forced out during the takeover. This is Seabury Stanton's original handwritten notebook from his officer training during the First World War. This notebook has about 85 pages copiously inscribed with handwritten notes concerning all aspects of trench warfare in 1918 including Poison Gas Machine Guns Construction of Trenches and Warfare of Position Grenades Raids and Patrols and more. The notebook includes a few drawings interspersed within the handwritten text. About half the pages are left blank. Stanton noted the name of the instructor and the date for each of about a dozen lessons with each lesson being several pages of handwritten notes. The first page is inscribed Seabury Stanton 1st Inf. Co. O.T.C. BIO NOTES: One online source provides: Berkshire Hathaway traces its roots to a textile manufacturing company established by Oliver Chace in 1839 as the Valley Falls Company in Valley Falls Rhode Island. Chace had previously worked for Samuel Slater the founder of the first successful textile mill in America. Chace founded his first textile mill in 1806. In 1929 the Valley Falls Company merged with the Berkshire Cotton Manufacturing Company established in 1889 in Adams Massachusetts. The combined company was known as Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates. In 1955 Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates merged with the Hathaway Manufacturing Company which was founded in 1888 in New Bedford Massachusetts by Horatio Hathaway. Hathaway was successful in its first decades but it suffered during a general decline in the textile industry after World War I. At this time Hathaway was run by Seabury Stanton whose investment efforts were rewarded with renewed profitability after the Depression. After the merger Berkshire Hathaway had 15 plants employing over 12000 workers with over $120 million in revenue and was headquartered in New Bedford Massachusetts. However seven of those locations were closed by the end of the decade accompanied by large layoffs. In 1962 Warren Buffett began buying stock in Berkshire Hathaway after noticing a pattern in the price direction of its stock whenever the company closed a mill. Eventually Buffett acknowledged that the textile business was waning and company's financial situation was not going to improve. In 1964 Stanton made a verbal tender offer of $1112 per share for the company to buy back Buffett's shares. Buffett agreed to the deal. A few weeks later Buffett received the tender offer in writing but the tender offer was for only $1138. Buffett later admitted that this lower undercutting offer made him angry. Instead of selling at the slightly lower price Buffett decided to buy more of the stock to take control of the company and fire Stanton which he did. However this put Buffett in situation where he was now majority owner of a textile business that was failing. In 2010 Buffett claimed that purchasing Berkshire Hathaway was the biggest investment mistake he had ever made and claimed that it had denied him compounded investment returns of about $200 billion over the previous 45 years. Buffett claimed that had he invested that money directly in insurance businesses instead of buying out Berkshire Hathaway due to what he perceived as a slight by an individual those investments would have paid off several hundredfold. Buffett initially maintained Berkshire's core business of textiles but by 1967 he was expanding into the insurance industry and other investments. Berkshire first ventured into the insurance business with the purchase of National Indemnity Company. In the late 1970s Berkshire acquired an equity stake in the Government Employees Insurance Company GEICO which forms the core of its insurance operations today and is a major source of capital for Berkshire Hathaway's other investments. In 1985 the last textile operations Hathaway's historic core were shut down. ‎EVERETT SEATTLE PUGET SOUND OLYMPIA WASHINGTON WA. Good. 1929. On offer is an interesting Depression Era manuscript diary handwritten by 37 year old woman who lives in the state of Washington near Olympia and Seattle likely from Everett Washington the city the book was acquired with the writer mostly around Puget Sound and frequent trips to Seattle Olympia Monroe Silver Lake Rocky Point Bremerton and more. She also spends her New Year holiday in Vancouver and long camping trip also in Canada. While the books represents 5 years of this woman's life from 1929 - 1933 the two early years 1929/1930 are almost full then she writes sporadically with the remaining years half or more full. Historians and researchers of the great Northwest during the 1930s and depression era will be rewarded with an interesting and unique perspective of this active woman's life as she spends a lot of time camping swimming at the YMCA "tank" golfing trips with their wealthy friends Dr. and Mrs. Miller and the Burdick's who own a yacht takes great camping trip in the summer of 1930 around Canim Lake in Canada several trips to the Oregon coast around the Sea Side Tillamook area and much more. Here are snippets: 1929 "Lawrence and I with Pamela Barney and Dr. and Mrs. Miller came back from Vancouver after 3 days of grand fun. Went up Sunday. Wonderful trip. Hope we can go again….Inauguration of 31st President U.S. Herbert Hoover. Vice President Charles Curtis. Lawrence better again this A.M. Blood count 1100. Dr's decide operation not necessary. Went to see him at noon. Pola mother and I went twice after 9 P.M. too. Feeling fine. Thank God!.Neva Ruppel came in to see me to tell me about Vallie. The family are at a loss to know why Vallie should end her life disastrously……Dear diary I am as worried over my beloved Lucile. She had another bad attack of the heart. Went out to see her brought her wine and flowers. Poor dear she looked so bad. Marie is so worried over her father. Her father had to be operated on again today….got up 6:30 and played golf. Breakfast. A walk to the Sulphur Springs and golf again. Pola and I went in the tank again before dinner. Cooks Birches Dykeman's Mr. Bean and Miss Sanders from Seattle were in the party. Left there about 3:30 and got home at 10:30. Stopped at Bellingham for dinner. Home again after a glorious perfect trip….Beautiful day. Florence and Carl Burdick came up in their yacht to take us for a cruise but poor L. couldn't get away. I went with them down to the boat and had dinner….Mother and I went with Florence and Carl for a sailing trip to Sandy Point. Were guests of Dr. and Mrs. Chandler in the afternoon. Got home about 10:30 P.M. Wonderful day……." 1930 "Had the grandest time again in Vancouver. All went to the dinner dance and had the usual round of pleasure. Came home and had crab feed at Polly's….Lunch with Mabe. Dr. and Mrs. Miller and I sneaked off to Seattle to have dinner at the Wilsonian and to see hockey game….Barney Paula Lawrence and I drove to Vancouver to be guests of Dr. and Mrs. F. R. Miller at Vancouver Hotel to celebrate their birthdays. Had Royal table at the dinner dance….Got home 9:30 after such a grand day in Vancouver. Got up at 8 A.M. and had lovely breakfast. We all went on to see Capilano Canyon and Stanley Park Marine Drive and Channesy Heights. Dinner at the new hotel in Bellingham….Lunch with Marie. Dr. and Mrs. Miller L and I went to Helen Swope tea room in Seattle for turkey dinner then took in 5th Ave. to celebrate my birthday May 2nd….Polly took Mrs. Miller mother and myself to Tacoma. Mother and I to see Alma baby and Polly and Mrs. Miller went to Camp Lewis to visit Bill who is in training camp. We left at 9 A.M. Had coffee and lunch at Al's and stopped at Bob's Place on the highway for chicken dinner. Beautiful day and wonderful. Baby so dear….Dr. and Mrs. Miller Barney Polly mother Lawrence and I left 6 A.M. on our camping trip. Our first stop was border then Chillawack for liquor. Lunch near Hope then to Lytton from there cabins for the night about 8 miles up Thompson river….Started out about 9 A.M. Stopped at Clinton for few provisions beer and lunch. Wonderful drive all morning along Thompson River. Drove to Big Bar Lake. Stayed in cabin for night. Boys fished…….Left about 9 A.M. First stop chasm one of nature's strangest freaks affording great scenic attraction. Then 100 Mile House to Canim Lake our destination. Everybody disappointed. Awful hot and no shade trees…." ‎near Brattleboro Vermont VT. Good. 1962. On offer is a sensational original 1962 manuscript diary handwritten by a wealthy 28 year old Vermont woman named Katherine. Uniquely this diary is an extremely intimate look into a bitter ill woman who details the horrific life she faces and the numerous challenges: a cheating husband a disease ridden body mental anguish requiring institutionalization a duplicitous doctor an undisclosed disease which may be syphilis UFO and alien sightings and visitations and much much more. Her illness causes painful boils and abscesses many under her breasts that have to be lanced or erupt on their own leaving scars that leave her body disfigured and mutilated. Researchers and collectors of manuscripts specific to women's issues and gender studies will be hard pressed to find a more raw statement of one woman's life than this diary. The author states her husband Paul is 30 years old at one point and that she is unable to have sex with him due to the horrific damage her disease has done to her: She is cared for by 2 servants one to cook one to clean and act as companion at times she has friends and at one point finally decides to divorce Paul and then is courted by Michael an accountant who she wonders how he can love and want to marry a woman in what can only be a sexless marriage. She is sure he is to go running from her if he ever saw her naked body. Katherine is a bitter woman many times calling the woman she 'knows' Paul is having an affair with 'the ugly bitch' one of her medical men is 'Dr. Asshole' and when it comes to Paul she basically ends up saying 'who cares' to enquiries from her mother and girlfriends. She wished he was dead and also at times that she was dead. She was a former homecoming queen and when another woman consoles her she is aghast that an ugly woman should pity her the beauty. She is cruel in her bitterness wondering how a woman that should require a bag over her head to have sex should look upon her with pity. She laments how sad it was her husband didn't know his beautiful bride would turn out to be Frankenstein's monster. She does have friends she sees a lot has dinner with she shops a lot and is always getting her hair done. She talks about killing herself and killing her husband and his girlfriend. She uses a fair bit of profanity and believes in UFO's and actually believes she sees them in her bedroom sometimes at night. She can't have sex so she and her husband sleep in separate bedrooms except for the odd time. In the end they divorce and she finds a new man she can't believe who loves her. This truly is an exceptional narrative. The diary itself is in excellent condition the handwriting is very readable and written in ink. She writes for the whole year of 1962 but doesn't write for every day of the year some months she skips days but usually writes a lot when she does write.
