‎1904 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT BOOK AND PRECURSOR TO HIS PUBLISHED WORK ON THE CHURCHES OF SUSSEX ENGLAND‎

‎CHICHESTER ENGLAND SUSSEX. Good. 1904. On offer is an original manuscript notebook handwritten by published author Alfred H Peat mainly on Sussex Churches. The book deals with over 40 churches and other topics and was drawn on heavily for the author's published work "Churches and other Antiquities of West Sussex" published by J W Moore in Chichester in 1906. The book measures 23cm by 19cm is signed "A H Peat Chichester 1904" at the front has 259 handwritten pages and is bound in half red morocco blue cloth boards. ‎1905 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG AMERICAN GIRL ON HER WAY TO STUDY PIANO AT ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST PRESTIGIOUS MUSIC CONSERVATORIES‎

‎BERLIN GERMANY. Good. 1905. On offer is an interesting original 1905 manuscript diary handwritten by a young woman identified on the inside cover by the initials F.M.B. We believe the 'B' stands for Buettner the surname name of her uncle. Researchers and historians will have many many clues to use to confirm or deny as she is prodigious mentioning the names of all she comes in contact with. The diary starts off with our author and her friend Gertrude in the States heading to St. Louis through Burlington on board the train. They are heading to New York to catch the ocean liner Kronprinz Wilhelm which takes them to Berlin Germany. The reason our author is heading to Europe is because she is to study piano we believe at the famed Stern Conservatory in Berlin under the tutorship of Professor Gustav Hollaender. There are 109 well filed handwritten pages and the first 13 pages have to do with her trip to New York and on the ship and the rest have to do with her time in Germany. She is a wonderful writer - here are some snippets: 1905 "It has always been my ambition to make a trip to Europe for a combined visit for pleasure and study. How often have I longed for a time when everyday would be a holiday. Now in the year 1905 it seems that my dream is to come true for Thursday July 27th finds me leaving home and dear one for a year beyond the deep blue sea. Gertrude and I leave at 10 in the morning and go to St. Louis via Burlington. The day is cool and rainy. Paul met us at the depot at 5:50 and we took the Suburban RR for his home. I had to wear a white handkerchief tied around my arm so he would recognize us. It began to pour and we had a terrible experience walking at least 8 blocks in mud and high weeds. Our arms and hands were nearly out of joint carrying so many things……she goes on to talk about her nights stay at Paul's home until they left the next morning at 8:20 on the "Big Four"….Indianapolis Indiana has a large depot. Ate supper on the dining car $1.00. Train went so fast that a swell colored waiter lost his balance and nearly fell on me. Changed trains at Cleveland Ohio at 11 o'clock at night…." "August 1st We got up on this memorable day at 5 o'clock and managed to dress very nicely. I wore a short black skirt a plaid silk waist a white cap white gloves and a light blue veil. The night before we had a shower of letters from our loved ones. Another surprise was that Ger---name was put on the door slate as Elsie. When we entered our cabin we saw 2 steamer chairs which had been sent to us by Mr. Wallace. The steamer left the pier at 8 o'clock and I had a bad spell of crying. But I tried to be brave and soon felt fine. We passed the beautiful Statue of Liberty. We have a fine place on deck for our chairs also a fine place at `1st table. No land in sight at 9 o'clock. Saw the pilot leave the ship. My number at the table is 163. Gertrude is on one side and a young man on other. The napkins at the table are about 1 mile square. There is no drinking water anywhere last night and Ger and I took two good swallows of "schnapps". I was the only woman at the table." "August 3rd Very damp in the morning. Spent day with Mr. and Mrs. Noel. In the eve Mr. Tarr took me to the first cabin to hear the concert. I saw the beautiful parlors library dining room etc. we promenaded for a while and then sat on upper deck and talked. At 9 o'clock I went to the eve concert in our cabin with Mr. and Mrs. Noel and had a fine time." "August 5th Took pictures. The dog "Noble" sat on my lap what a wonder! Remember the "slop barrel". A case of small pox in 1st cabin reported. Ma Tarr brought me some peanuts. The fellow we call "The Anarchist" and who is looking for a wife makes great efforts to cultivate my acquaintances. Went to the eve concert with Mr. and Mrs. Noel." In Bremerhaven they take a few weeks I believe to see the sights and on August 30th she writes: "The day started in with a heavy rain. Went to the Conservatory and were ushered into a waiting room. Then the director Prof. Gustav Hollander examined us and told me I have such talent that he would have me take of Prof. Bohlmann instead of Prof. Dreyschock. Price 450 mks. We wrote out our programs at home. In the afternoon Uncle Franz Buettner came over in the eve." HISTORICAL NOTES: "It was a private school in Berlin with many notable tutors and alumni. It was originally founded in 1850 at the Berliner Musikschule by Julius Stern Theodor Kullak and Adolf Bernhard Marx. It was originally founded in 1850 as the Berliner Musikschule by Julius Stern Theodor Kullak and Adolf Bernhard Marx. Kullak withdrew from the conservatory in 1855 in order to create a new academy of sculpture and three-dimensional art. With Marx's withdrawal in 1856 the conservatory came exclusively under the Stern family and adopted its name. In 1894 it was taken over by Gustav Hollaender the uncle of film composer Friedrich Hollaender who moved the school's location to the Berlin Philharmonic concert hall on Bernburger Strasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In the course of the Gleichschaltung process the Stern Academy in 1936 was renamed Konservatorium der Reichshauptstadt Berlin controlled by the Nazi regime. Gustav Hollaender's heirs were diseased but for a few years they were able to run a "Jewish Private Music School Hollaender" until they were deported and murdered in 1941. After the end of the Second World War in 1945 the school was again renamed as the Städtisches Konservatorium City Conservatory in what was to become West Berlin. In 1966 it was merged with the public Akademische Hochschule für Musik into the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Berlin State School of Music and the Performing Arts since 2001 the Berlin." ‎1899 ORIGINAL GROUP OF THREE 3 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY THE WELL TRAVELED DAUGHTER OF AN OHIO NOTABLE AND THE WIFE OF ANOTHER RENOWNED REVEREND‎

‎QUAKER CITY OHIO OH. Good. 1899. On offer is an original group of three 3 manuscript diaries handwritten by Miss Lena Gregg Cochran sometimes Lena M. Cochran; later Mrs. Charles Henry Williams. The first two diaries ranging in dates from the end of 1899 through to 1902 are written before she was married and the last diary starting in 1916 was written after her marriage. Lena was from Quaker City Ohio. She was the daughter of local notable Alexander Cochran. Super historical records on both her Father and her husband are easily found online. Lena is not a dedicated daily diarist but she writes when there are important events summaries of her summer's activities some daily accounts descriptive entries of various trips taken her thoughts on the different books she has read entries about her boy who's fighting in WWI and a lot of genealogy information including her husband's side of the family. We also note that there are some super passages when Lena gets very ill in 1917 and she needs an operation. It is a fascinating especially from a modern perspective four page description as her treatment involves "ether" which becomes an intense episode and during recovery they have her knees strapped together and she has to be turned every 20 to 30 minutes. All told there are just over 300 pages of entries. Here are some snippets: Diary 1 75 pages "November 30th 1899 Thanksgiving Day. A satisfactory day clear through. Such a beautiful day and so many things to be thankful for and cross as a bear. Went to church. The sermon by Rev. Lepage very good. Then home to a quiet dinner. Napped till milking time. Went to the M.E. Social with Mrs. Sprague Alice and Annie B. Found there a good crowd. My friends mostly married and engaged and I feel at a distance with them. She then writes the rest in some kind of code. She has a few pages in these diaries that she writes code but just a few. "December 19th 1899 The Masonic banquet. Mother and I went. I sang "The Gypsy Love Song". The supper fine. 5 kinds of meat and everything served beautifully. Afterwards the cake walk perfectly killing. A jolly time. Isaac and Mr. E____ very comical. All voted it a grand success. Heattie and Mr. Gregg came up with me or allowed me that pleasure. Papa on a Western trip. Glass horrible and everything going wrong. Got horned week before last. Thought my eye was gone but felt very very thankful when I found it wasn't. Quite a gash cut and mother frightened nearly to death." "March 15th 1900 A very sad day. Learned by the daily Guernsey times of Mr. Audersoui's death at Phil______ Va by a train. Knocked from a bridge. I met him in Cincinnati. A dreadfully shocking thing. Poor man. He kept writing to me." "April 27th 1900 Birthday. 27 years old. A beautiful day. Peach blossoms in bloom but not the apple blossoms. Busy this morning. This afternoon Mr. and Mrs. ____and I went out The Pike horseback riding. Came home by the woods and gathered wild flowers. Helped get supper and then called on Mrs. Rodgers and went down to see Aunt Em Flint. She doesn't look strong." 2nd DIARY 116 pages "1900. In June I went to Oberlin to attend Commencement. Stayed with Mrs. McDaniel's. Laura was here. Got here Sat. We were met by the train by Laura. Sunday saw many of my old acquaintances. H. H. B. there. Went to the campus that eve. Wed. went to Cleveland and spent a day and a half with the Wood girls. Drove all over the city nearly. Through the park and to Garfield's monument. Very fine. Friday to Buffalo with Laura. Sat. eve Mr. Root called and we went to the Yacht Club; a large building standing out in the lake a little reading room reception room café dancing room and billiard hall. Laura gave a porch party. Very pleasant "stick in the ice cream." Went to the theatre three times. Once to matinee and with Mr. Robertson and Mr. Henland and from there to the Genesee for lunch. Fourth of July to Dunkirk N.Y. and then trolley ride to Fredinia a pretty little town. Dinner at Dunkirk. A perfectly beautiful boat ride. Another trip to Port Coburn. Everybody sick except Miss ____and me. Walked through the little town and bought lemons and chewing gum for sea sickness. A lot of fun. Mr. Root and Camp took us dining to _____ a resort in the Niagara River. They dance very evening. They also took us for an automobile ride through the parks down to the Yacht Club down the Main Street and home……." "December 31st 1900 The old century quietly slipping away and a wonderful one it has been! Tonight from seven to nine we were at the church. Mrs. Ferguson W. C. T.U. Prof. Sharp of Mansfield Lyman Moore and Mr. Rev. Sprague talked. I sang "Room in My Heart." After dinner drove out to Cunningham's with Uncle Sam. He is hale and hearty for 78 years. Aunt Em well except for ear ache. Humor to be cultivated this year with gentleness and Godliness. May the next century find this world that much in advance of the mistakes in politics temperate and social homage. Lena Cochran. The cities all celebrating tonight; tolling bells booming canons and prayers going up from many of the church." "June 24th 1901 Went to Cambridge came to attend the reception given Dr. Will Haines and wife. Met them on the train with Uncle Isaac and Aunt Lizzie. The reception a very pleasant affair. Friday eve. we gave a dinner for them. A lovely time. Harriet a bright unselfish girl her Paris trousseau very elaborate. Wedding gown cream satin cover with hand embroidered lace. Expected Homer B. Sunday." "September 14th 1901 President McKinley died at 2:15 this morning. Awakened by the bells tolling. It seems too terrible to be true. Such a good true noble wise man to be snatched out of the world in such a cruel way….The nation thoroughly aroused. Almost lynched the murderer in Buffalo last eve. Poor Mrs. McKinley!" "September 15th 1901 Our pastor Mr. Rev. Stickler such an earnest good man. He's working very hard and I do sincerely hope and pray he can do the work he hopes to. This is my wedding day according to our gossips. But I saw no sign of it. The groom was in Dayton. Killing reports out. How far off they get. For once the Q. C. people are thrown off the scent completely and I'm glad of it. They are too interested. How little of our future we know. There is so much here to be done. I wish I were a Sampson with the wisdom of _____and the goodness of Paul. Could do a great work here but I don't. Let us be content in work to do the thing we can and not presume to fret because it's little. Mrs. Browning." "October 21st 1901 20 pages long about her trip west. "Silver City New Mexico. October 21st 1901 Got here last Monday after about 2. We started four weeks ago today. Spent Tuesday in Chicago. Went out to see Gail Mr. and Mrs. Hibbard there with John K. in the morning looking at the shop windows on to Denver. Met Miss Manning on the train. Her friend Mr. Robertson took us in. To Colorado Springs. A swell bustling town. Full of eastern tourists. Went to Manitou pretty place and on to the garden of the Gods. Wonderful rocks. Sunset the colors beautiful on the mountains. The drive up to the Cave of the Winds. Scenery perfectly grand. Way down below the trains creeping through the Mt. tunnels. The Cheyenne Gorge magnificent in and out through the great palisades of rocks towering up and out. Some in the shapes of castles. The little stream at the side of the road the ferns and trees growing out of the rocks up to the falls. Then the 286 steps to the top of the little streams head. 5 falls. The tree of Cards a grand view through the canyons. Helen Hunt Jackson's grave at the top of that Mt. Each visitor adds a stone to her memory. Back to Denver that night……Salt Lake a disappointment. The worst old dilapidated buildings right around their temple plats. Horrid old empty rooms. All had the same all gone appearance. The statue of Joseph Smith his home which looks like a private hotel and his favorite wife's home. Up to Ogden to the main line. Trains packed going in sections….Met nice people on the route. Dr. Wilkinson of Minneapolis. Lovely. Dr. Heacock of St. Joe Mo. Backache. Ran out of water on the train. Only one diner. The Great Lord of New Castle had to stand in line with mortals of the day for 2 ½ hours waiting to go in dining car. On to Frisco at night. Crossed the bay by moonlight. The lights of the city lovely. Mr. Berring very kind. Y.W.C.H. Miss Wheeler of Farrell St. Evening prayers. A fine home for the girls. Through the Emporium the Mint out to Golden Gate Park to Cliff House saw the seals. To China Town dreadful huts and hovels. Joss House drugstore underground hovels without a bit of fresh air. From Frisco to Los Angeles the sea lovely along the railroad and the Mts. on the other. Derricks right on the sea and the oil floating right on top of water. Oil for fuel not for lighting purposes. Can't be refined. Mr. and Mrs. Scot took us to the Catalina. So very kind through out entire stay. Los Angeles a pretty city. Made up of tourists. Good stores fine blocks hustling everywhere…." DIARY 3 116 pages "April 2nd 1917 Chas. has funeral of Clarence Whitney. Jessie going tomorrow. Mother not well. House far from going smoothly….Jessie returned Friday. I had hardly washed my face or combed my hair while she was gone. Pink held me fast. Went to Cleveland April 18th. Operated on Thursday at Charity Hospital. Taken ill Sunday before coming from church. Charles and I went up in the morning. He came home at 2:30. Dr. H. came in at 9 o'clock. Operated on at 12:30 next day. Full night. Upstairs till 2:30. Came out of the ether some about dark at 9 o'clock enough for a hypodermic. Chas. came every day that week. Preached in Euclid Ave. Cong. Sunday. At home. Miss Catherine McCarthy nurse. Best one known and so kind……Serious operation when we thot it so little. Wed. after Charles left so lonely and hard. No sleep till from 4 to 5 that night. Next morning I dreaded the ether and all so much. "In the Cross" Aunt Lydia's book helped too. Be a Queen. I never knew before how much nerve it takes to go through it all. Dr. Jameson helped me so much holding my hand or pulse while I took it. Talked to them and at last said I'm nearly gone! He said "All right" and went to sleep. Chas. helped me by his prayers. Came out of it as quietly said to nurse "Take it off it burns" but it was the awful burning of the wound which felt like a red hot iron. When I vomited the ether it nearly killed me. Kept it up for a day or two. Had to be turned day and night every 20 or 30 minutes it hurt me so to lie still. Miss McCarthy so willing and patient. Wasn't I thankful when I could move myself in my hips an inch. Not much appetite for awhile. My knees strapped together for awhile and laid in a pillow. Cranky about the doors……" "My poor mother. We had the bluest most mournful letters. It seems wicked not to have her here. Here I am in bed and Jessie worked nearly to death. How can I have another sick with me now It worries me all the time. Or boy's already arriving in Europe to fight. Lakewood H. Unit there with 6 Oberlin C. boys. Harvard and Princeton boys there too. Enlistment June 5 of all boys from 21-30. Mothers all worried to death. It seems a shame. 189 boys are gone from O.C. and some girls." "August 27th 1917 A week ago we were worried for the Viking Jessie's father's vessel had been given up for lost. We didn't tell her and he turned up alright. Dreadful storms at sea now and so beautiful on land. I'm so thankful we are all on land tho even there dangers are always present. I shall be most thankful when Chas. reaches home safely……" "Mother's letters are full of woe. She seems determined to have Bright's disease and die. What can I do It seems a perfect shame. Birthday spoiled for cabbage….Life is pretty complex these days and you wonder how everything will come out. I should like to be as strong as an ox." All of the cover's are very worn especially around the edges. One cover has come completely off. The binding and pages in all of them look good however. ‎STATION HOSPITAL SCOTT FIELD BELLEVILLE ILLINOIS. Good. 1927. On offer is a super fascinating group of 14 manuscript letters handwritten by Wiley J. Woolford writing from Station Hospital Scott Field Belleville Illinois to his aunt Miss Mary Woodford of Sparta Illinois. The 1927 letters give the sense that Wiley was the 'black sheep' of the family and had a reputation for causing trouble or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Casual research finds that he and six other men pleaded guilty to drunken charges in Benton Harbor. He was stationed at Station Hospital on a charge of desertion that almost got him a dishonorable discharge but he was found not guilty. Many of the people in his hometown were supposedly gossiping and rumor mongering which he condemns in his letters. Wiley also hits his Aunt up for money and is looking for a way out of the army. His last letter is intriguing because it seems that his Aunt has decided not to have anymore contact with him. Here are some snippets: "September 8th 1927. My Dear Aunt A few lines to let you know that I got your letter and sure was glad to get it for I was beginning to think you had forgotten to write anymore. I was just getting ready to come down to find out what was the reason you hadn't answered……Oh yes be sure and try to let me know a few days before you come up so I won't be busy on that day. Tell Mrs. Crawford that my friend Mac is still here and is well but as I have chosen a different pardner now. I don't pay much attention to him for as I have found out by watching him that he isn't much good. So it isn't a very good policy to associate with them kind to much for it will lead to no good. I have got it in my head that I am going to go straight from now on and no one is going to change me. I'm feeling better now than I have for a long time. Am gaining in health and also in weight. Have no desire to drink and carouse around anymore like I did before joining the army….Good Bye Answer soon and tell me all of the late city news. From Wiley." "November 14th 1927 Dearest Aunt……This sure is some awful miserable old world is it not If it is no better in the here after it sure will be awful won't it. But as for being any worse that would be almost impossible though there isn't any use of giving up yet for there is always light after darkness. So I still am living in great hopes there is still a chance for me if I try hard enough. I am still young enough yet to give this old world a good try out don't you think so if I can keep the devil from getting the best of me. Most everybody thinks Scott Field is an awful fine place and they all tell me that I am in the best outfit in the whole field. Though you see that isn't the idea I had when joining the army for my idea was of getting into a place so I could get some good schooling right away without wasting so much time. But as it happened I just got into the wrong outfit. Instead of coming here I should have went to that aviator school up here at Chanute Field Illinois by now I could have had six months towards being a good pilot and also a good mechanic along with it. So you see why I am so discouraged don't you. Oh well a person can never tell. I might hit on a streak of luck yet but never in the army for I don't like any kind of army life no difference what shape or form it would be impossible for me to get used to it for as it is not my kind of life. It I had of only known it soon enough. There is a good training school up here near Chicago where I could have got a good mechanical education and also flying license after six months time and if a person hasn't got the money up there…….Good Bye from your boy Wiley." "December 26th 1927 Dear Aunt How are you feeling today Hope you are well. As I am feeling kind of blue right now myself. But I guess you have forgotten all about me by now haven't you For as I know you don't care if I am at home or some where else do you. I am feeling so bad. I cannot even write very good. Sure feel awful bad. So be sure you have already got the great news about me being at Blair Friday evening. That darn deputy of Sparta Illinois come down and got me. But of course you have got the news long before now. It sure was some fine Christmas to me but I am in hopes that I won't get very much out of it….Guess as there is no use of writing anymore. ‎1845 ORIGINAL PRE CIVIL WAR MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A MEDINA NEW YORK MATRIARCH FEATURING LOCAL HISTORY AND GENEALOGY‎

‎MEDINA NEW YORK WAYNE COUNTY. Fair. 1845. On offer is a fascinating pre Civil War 1845 with notes to 1869 manuscript diary handwritten by Nancy Maston who is a resident in or near Medina New York in Wayne County. She was born on September 20th 1796 thusly 48 years old at the outset of the diary. We note that Nancy when she turns 67 years old in 1863 that she considers herself "quite an old woman but somewhat smart yet." She has a son Henry and a husband Ephraim. Her mother is noted on Sept. 20 1862 to be remembered to have died some time before at 85 years of age and Nancy misses her very much. Nancy describes on December 25 1858 when the journal entries begin "Wilcox Mill burnt down in Medina - formerly the old tannery - lost everything no insurance has wife daughter and son." Ephraim and Henry were present at the scene. A Civil War Draft is mentioned on Feb. 24 1865 as "an exciting day - an awful war when will it come to an end" Also the death of a friend from an April 16 1869 entry where the "girls" and Henry have gone to attend the funeral of Isaac Heist - died of typhoid fever and congestion of the brain." Apart from the above entries life seems pretty good and even keeled: ordinary entries of visits with people back and forth i.e. R. Douglass 9/10 Sept 1847 13th Sept same year Littell and Aunt Lydia and 15th of that month with Dr. Hill - note here that her writing deteriorates for some reason in 1847. Visits with people also 1855 and 1853. Normal life comprises of men/family folk riding the sleigh for visits and "chop wood for stove". Nancy is also religious and "laments people have lost respect for the gospel" - also calling Sunday the Sabbath. She attended the funeral of a "coloured woman" at the Methodist Church. While she writes sporadically there are about 50 pages of entries and a number of ephemeral pieces tucked in including a World War I Registration Certificate dated Sep 12 1918 for Edgar Abraham Gould in Buffalo NY. ‎1798 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT RELIC OF RELIGIOUS MANIFESTATION BEING A HANDWRITTEN EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF A YOUNG GIRL'S VISIONS OF HEAVEN AND HER TRIP TO HELL WITH JESUS‎

‎JERICHO VERMONT. Good. 1798. On offer is a sensational original relic of late 18th Century religious manifestation being a five 5 page manuscript account of a young girl's religious visions and experiences as detailed and handwritten by an unknown eyewitness. Hannah Coy the 9 year old girl is recorded as having been in a trance and while under its influence having religious revelations of Heaven and Hell and seeing Jesus God and the Devil. The narrator it appears witnessed the child in trance while she saw this vision the writer basically records what Hannah said and saw using Hannah's own words. It begins thusly: "The month of August the 10th day I began to write the following narrative may be depended on as fact and can has been witnessed by great number of those who saw and heard it themselves." The testimony continues describing a noted change in Hannah's demeanour: "Hannah Coy of nine years of age was by nature a brightly active girl and as naturally inclined to childish plays as any of her brothers or sisters but all of a sudden she forsook all her plays and appeared acceding sober for the space of a month. The family all took notice of it and the children could not get her out to play with the and would sometimes reflect upon her for not being willing to play but she would say to them my dear brothers and sisters these plays are but foolish trifles and will not do us any good we must leave them…" She goes on to describe Jesus and God her vision of hell and the Devil and that some infants were there sees people she knew in Heaven. "Jesus Christ was pleading for all the poor sinners he was surrounded by thousands of Saints and Angels" Her mother asked if she saw anyone she knew she saw a recently deceased neighbor who was "deaf and dumb and could now sing and speak and praise God." She then sees hell describes the tortured souls and the Devil himself. He tries to grab her but Jesus bid her to not be afraid. Christ told me to return and to tell my parents what I have seen. Tell my father that he must Carry me to our ministers and I must tell the minister all that I have seen and that he must come to my daddys and preach the gospel." We believe based on the paper ink and writing style the book is late 1700s and one online source appears to confirm and identify Hannah's experiences when she related in 1798 the following: "Tending to Edify Astonish and Instruct" Published Narratives of Spiritual Dreams and Visions in the Early Republic ANN KIRSCHNER University of Delaware On a Sunday in September 1798 one can safely assume the manuscript was written a mere month before a large congregation gathered in Jericho Vermont to hear nine-year-old Hannah Coy relate a strange and wonderful story of a vision that had transformed her life.1 She had seen heaven and Christ himself-even his wounded feet and hands-and witnessed "thousands of saints and angels" singing praise to God including a neighbor who in life had been deaf and dumb. Moreover she had also been whisked by Christ to the pit of hell and seen the devil himself-a "dreadful creature" with "dreadful claws with long nails"-and observed "multitudes of poor souls in misery." Trembling at the prospect that this might be her fate she was then assured by Christ that she "was his and should live forever with him in heaven." Her only charge was to return to earth and tell all that she had seen. Two years later her story was published in a small pamphlet that also contained accounts of the visions of two other young women and another of a miraculous healing. 2 Coy's account is but one of a large group of similar pamphlets of dreams and visions that were published in increasing numbers beginning in the 1780s and peaking in the early 1800s paralleling the growth of evangelical Protes1. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of the post World War II era of polio victims being the 1950 hardcover handwritten diary of an unidentified teenage girl from Ogden Utah who was stricken with Bulbar Polio in 1949 and had spent time in an Iron Lung for two weeks. A Dr. C. H. Jensen did a tracheotomy because she still couldn't breathe. A very full largish diary book contains an enormous store of narrative as she rarely misses a day and shares intimately with her diary: She writes everyday of her life circumstances of feeling ill/tired yet she manages to help her Mother with housework cooks bakes babysits and eventually goes back to school. She gets lots of penicillin shots and attended physical therapy. Recovering she becomes an accomplished horseback rider and has her own horse named "Sundance" sees lots of movies mentions her first time riding in a taxi of shaving her legs of her first date with a boy named David Hansen of going to the White City Ballroom.She has many brothers and sisters which she has listed all family members & their birthdays in the back of the diary.They are the Millers and they had a farm as she mentions having cows bulls rabbits etc.and riding on a tractor.and how they have to tend animals.Her brothers got hurt physically by getting cut on the farm fence of being kicked by horses breaking wrists falling on ice etc.The brothers do rodeos and were members of the Junior Posse.One brother Waldo "banged up front end of car".They all attended the "Eight Stake Dance Festival".Took a trip to Yellowstone National Park July 1-3 in 1950.Her brother Elias dressed as a girl on Halloween and she did his make-up.Her brothers Elias & Lynn took Cello lessons she wished she could take piano.Her Dad bought her cowgirl boots. They made popcorn balls for Christmas.She appears to have gone to a school named " Mound Fort " and speaks of Mound Fort beating other teams in Football.Of how the Yankees won the World Series on Oct 7th.She got a ride in a '49 Ford she likes Chevys better.Her mother attends the " Relief Society ".Her brother Ariel works at the Iron Works does taxes.Her parents go out alot and had attended a "Daughters' of Utah Pioneers" dance.She makes "divinity" & ice cream with her Dad pudding breads etc. and she can sew.Ariel had a telescope a viewmaster and she listens to her brother's radio.She made a list of what she had received on Christmas in 1949 and on Christmas of 1950.Her brother Rollo got drafted.Visited Weber Canyon.Went to Primary Festival at Lorin Farr Park. ‎IPSWICH MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1867. On offer are five handwritten manuscript journals all having belonged to the Caldwell family who lived in Massachusetts one of the diaries 1870 has the name Ezra S. Vieyes written in it. A casual reading does not determine where Ezra fits in with the Caldwell family but a more detailed reading will hopefully flesh out the relationship. Two of the diaries have the name of the family scion being Abraham Caldwell of Ipswich Massachusetts. Other towns mentioned include Westminster Fitchburg Northborough and Worcester. The diaries represent the years 1867 full of entries 1870 a quarter full 1875 a half filled 1887 fully written and the 1890's. Though not all fully written and the entries suggest illiterate writers these diaries represent a true piece of Americana with a treasure trove of local historical detail and genealogical information. For the medical collector there is an interesting thread running throughout - Mr. Caldwell is quite aged and he catalogues his daily ailments certainly a medical professional may assess his health from his writings. Here are some snippets: 1867 - "February 26th Went to examination. Lizzie Rawson teach good." "March 4th Went to town meeting. Another trial of Shemp decided as it should be." "May 10th Surveyed road to town distance of about 2 ¾ miles 15 ft." "June 17th Golden wedding 75-100 people persons present." "September 13th Took Templers Degrees. Went to town to lecture. Carried B.M. Balch." "October 13th On euqaduct to town meeting for roads. Was chosen on committee." 1887 "January 9th 7 Below. Very cold. Snow flakes flying all day. Ben out very little today. Louitah Lord little more comfortable but very sick." "February 9th Sick all day. From Salem paper I see Mr. Joseph Pusfer died in Salem Oct. 19th 1886. Born July 18th 1798." "March 14th Today I hav made a grait mistak in being two positive when in fact I was rong. My mind is faking me." "June 22nd and 23rd Stage coach below belonged to Appleton farm…. Boiled out sink cess pool very hard job. Had nummness in my arm and shoulder. Stage coach passed to day for Salem." "July 25th Hot and sultry. A young lady came to Mrs. Batysons. The 1893-1900 journal in the lot is a handwritten financial journal which has about 100 pages of expense type entries. I believe most of the entries have to do with rentals and money collected for the rentals. This journal has the name John Caldwell written on the inside. The front cover has fallen off of this journal and some of the pages are torn. The first 20 pages have also been torn out and are not accounted for. On offer is the remarkable handwritten journal/diary of Katherine Davis of Haverhill Massachusetts 23 years old at the commencement of writing. Entries begin June 1 1922 and continue through the 1930s over the fully written 152 pages. This 8.5 x 6 inch book is a rare combination of Katherine's spiritual journey as she strives to be an enlightened Christian and the trials of medical problems that dog her; spina bifida which involved 9 months of operations a mastoidectomy and serious problems with her eyes. That said she is also a young woman with many friends and this too is laid bare. Throughout the journal it is clear that Ms. Davis is a character of remarkable strength who views her medical trials as God's method of preparing her for whatever role He has for her. But Katherine is still a young woman with all the wants and desires of any young woman and as a casual reading provides she has a busy good life with family and friends. The family appears to be wealthy commuting between Haverhill and a home in Brewster Massachusetts on Cape Cod called Sea Pines. The ledger details George's business from 1868 to 1873 with more than 900 pages of recorded transactions of detailed accounts of shoes boots and other footwear sold or repaired by George Lehner Jr. a master cobbler and his staff of shoemakers. Research of the 1860 U. S. Census shows George's father George Sr. age 56 as a "Master Shoemaker" born in Hesse Darmstadt Germany; George age 19 as a Shoemaker's Apprentice born in Pennsylvania. Living with his mother Elizabeth age 50 and sister Margaret age 14. Two shoemakers and a servant living with the family: Henry Keagy Sebastian Stout and Elizabeth Beam. The 1870 U. S. Census lists George now age 28 as a "Boot and Shoe Merchant" born in Pennsylvania; he was married to Margaret Lehner age 26; they had 3 children: May age 4 Charles age 3 Margaret age 1 and George age 3 months. Two shoemakers and a servant live with them: Lewis Barnaker Lewis Geotman and Elizabeth Miller. ‎St. LOUIS MISSOURI. Good. 1950. On offer is a super archive of nine 9 travel diaries written by Marie K. Zak a very well-known travel writer during the 1950s and '60s. A graduate of St. Louis University she worked for The Automobile Club World Wide Travel Service wrote a column called "Travel Talk" for a local newspaper and had a very close and religious family life. The diaries which date from July 1950 to May 1967 are filled with information about all the flights including meals served places seen a few are: Japan Amsterdam South America Mexico Hawaii Paris Switzerland Scotland etc. hotels stayed at ships traveled on restaurants people met and seen such as Bob Sharp and Bill Sanders of the Yankees and Salvador Dali food and drinks there are even some recipes for the drinks she enjoyed stickers from hotels airlines and beer bottles articles from "The Advertiser" the paper she wrote for photos and much more. The diaries are filled with ephemera; itineraries notes news clippings one of which is about the S.S. Liguria a ship they were on avoiding the perils of a hurricane photos telegrams cards stickers receipts pictures and numerous postcards beer bottle labels menus . All items are in very good condition. On offer is a small archive of three folded stampless letters written by famed Elizabeth Ashley Her maiden name was Elizabeth Woodson Moss. BIO NOTES: From the book "The Part Taken by Women in American History" "Elizabeth Ashley was perfectly familiar with all the political issues of the day but never advocated as a partisan either side; always intelligent and fluent in conversation she never assumed the slightest superiority or seemed conscious that her own opinion or judgement was better than that of others." She married first Dr. Wm P. Wilcox then 2nd in 1832 General William H. Ashley then 3rd married Hon. J.J. Crittenden a member of Fillmore's cabinet. There was a 1952 novel written about Elizabeth Ashley "The Three Lives of Elizabeth" by Shirley Seifert. Here are descriptions and snippets: 1 February 13th 1848 New Orleans letter one page of writing a short paragraph at the top and signed Elizabeth Ashley followed by another paragraph signed E. Ashley. "I am a thousand times obliged for your kind letter and am sorry I have not time to thank you for your attention to my Dear Father it is now late and it would take more room and time than I can command ." 2 1850 New York July 17th. About two and a half pages written by Elizabeth Ashley. "I was realy in much need of this remittance and had to leave my debts unpaid in Phil. and must request you to forward to my friend Mr Campbell some additional sum ." "We were greatly surprised and delighted at the arrival of Bus at the Irving House a few mon since he looks very well and has grown considerably since I left home." 3 1850 Washington City March 14 three pages of writing written and signed by E. SUPER WORLD WAR II NORTH AFRICA ROYAL AIR FORCE HANDWRITTEN MEMOIR: "This is an exercise book" which it is stated in the first line of the first entry: 22/2/43 9 pages; "I bought this book yesterday and am just taking a few spare moments to jot down some of the happenings and events of the last few months. This book is not intended to be a diary as such as I have found that a day to day record of events becomes monotonous; but rather a medium that permits me to express myself on paper at thise inevitable times in the service when due to ones surroundings and situation there is nothing else to do. I shall also include such events as seem worthy of record and which I may like to preserve for the future in a clear cut form than memory alone provides. So I am now on the threshold of Operational Flying there should be much of interest and amusement which will be of interest and amusement." He then summarizes his Air Force Career and details what I assume is the "happenings of the last few months" as detailed at the beginning of this entry. Unpaginated in original boards on thick paper there are at least 200 pages at two inches thick. Rudelle begins in 1745 and writes well into 1780s. There are at least two businesses running and ancilliary loans with corresponding notes. Mentions of trade with members of the King's staff. Many years of research in this ancient ledger. Rudelle diarizes his thoughts regarding most years in a special middle section of the book. Truly fascinating pre-Revolution manuscript and a delight for historians of the French Riviera. ‎1917 HAND WRITTEN MANUSCRIPT ADIRONDACK VACATION AND HUNTING TRIP DIARY OF MRS. A.L. FRANCES CRANE‎

‎New York State. Good. 1917. Original Wraps. 1917 Adirondack vacation and hunting trip travel diary of Mrs A. L. Crane starting Sept. 27th from Afton and by way of a train in Utica making way to Beaver River. It appears our writer is the new Mrs. Crane as she refers to one of the large suitcases having a "Just Married" sign attached. Turns out she is a joker as since I listed this diary I have discovered her 1901 travel diary with mention of the same husband!! There seem to be a fair number of people in her party. She frequently mentions that the 'men' have all gone off and done this or done that. Mention of hunting and the trials of camping out. Our writer confides to the blank page of her aches and pains and her 'old bones' aching but she won't complain to the others 'as they don't neither will I'. Here are some other excepts: "Tuesday 9th went up to the RR tracks and got another b.b. pie. Myron got worried about me and came looking for me. Spent a most miserable day. I wish I had never come to the woods. I never will with the same company again. Things are too strenuous. I can be with E. day after day with never a ripple in our friendship but R. rubs me the wrong way." "Thurs 11th. R and I have divided the work and I hope there will be no more friction." "Fri 12th. Rain rain go away come again another day and it will come again another day all right. It commenced as we were getting breakfast - Myron finished baking pancakes under an umbrella." "Sun. 14th. M and I took a short cut and found Dan Popes camp and left our calling card…we found one of the seats made of a barrel that the used at Bearver River. I wrote on it in pencil 'A.L. Crane and Wife called here…and found no one at home." Mrs. Crane mentions the names of everyone they meet everyone met at other camps the weather and even what was eaten. She is quite detail oriented and shares her feelings very generously. This is a super diary and given that this is five weeks in the rough it is far more than a mere travel diary. Fourteen leaves 28 pages of writing about half in this 5 x 8 inch 'Student Note Book'. Sometimes she writes in pencil some times in pen. On offer is an original handwritten manuscript being a 1916 World War I diary of about 90 pages of which half are expense entries and the other half are the many intriguing writings of a cultured intelligent but 'troubled' woman including a list of books to read one highlighted book is about the traits of the German Kaiser and Kaiserina lists of lady friends a list of 'Worries' gifts for her new baby instructions to herself to write an essay using people she admires and then there are the notations that occasionally litter book such as the following: "April 18th Can I ever learn to follow that small voice that is always right. This morning I heard it faintly say don't phone Miss Celchin until you have spoken to Miss Eachus. I disregarded it and was very sorry the instant I saw Miss Eachus. What good did it do me to buy a lunch downtown today….Read this over learn a lesson if possible." A close reading suggests the author is a young woman whose husband is Armin C. Hentschke a Private in the 364th Infantry of the American Expeditionary Forces. Her father perhaps her grandfather resides in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania but she notes her mother has just returned from a trip to San Francisco and research suggests the woman lives near her in Riverside California. This is confirmed given the 364th Infantry was made up almost exclusively of recruits from Southern California. She appears to be of German background spelling cinema with a 'k' and she has an older son named Hans who troubles her and certainly of European background referring to her parents as Mama and Papa. The address section has names and friends from many many different places in the USA and even in Canada.
