‎1884 - 1886 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG CHANNEL ISLANDS BOY DESCRIBING LIFE IN JERSEY AND THEN HIS FAMILY'S EMIGRATION TO SAN LEANDRO IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA‎

‎MILLBROOK JERSEY ISLAND TO SAN LEANDRO CALIFORNIA. Good. 1884. On offer is a fascinating unique manuscript relic of the life of a young boy living on the Jersey Islands one of the Channel Islands in the English Channel dated January 1884 through April 1885 and then April 1886. Incredibly the diary then becomes an intriguing description of this family's emigration to the United States of America by way of travel through Canada Boston St. Louis Oregon and finally settling near San Francisco and Oakland in San Leandro. Handwritten by an unidentified young man the diary begins in Millbrook Jersey where the diarist lived. There are many references to playing cricket he obviously loved playing cricket as well as references to football trips to various Jersey towns his daily life on Jersey Island planting potatoes and beans etc. Almost every day has at least a brief notation of the weather and notes of local events such as a two-masted ship has stranded near the station. His family appears to have been somewhat well-to-do the premium leather book lends credence given the youth of the writer perhaps they were land-owners and farmers on Jersey Island. The diary writer was able to travel quite a bit play lots of cricket go to school take Preceptor's Exams travel to France etc. Life did not appear a burden for him. There are many names mentioned in the diary but the diarist almost always used first names and only occasionally surnames. Here are snippets from his life on Jersey in 1884: 27 Fri. Fine rainy. Papa walked to Gorey. 5 Wed. Very fine. Played a foot-ball match against David's but were beaten. 15 Sat. Practiced cricket with Ernest. 20 Thurs. Windy. Played cricket. 29. Sat. Fine. Played cricket after school. Planted potatoes in the conservatory. 4 Fri. Rainy in the evening; played cricket. 8 Tues. Very fine. Ernest received a present from Uncle John. Played Cricket in the "Miles" with the school. 9 Wed. Very fine. Played cricket in "the Sands". 26. Sat. We went to Portelet Bay with Pirchard. Mamie got a prize of one pound. 30. Wed. We are studying history for the examinations. Played cricket in "The Sands". 1. Sun. Very fine. Mr. Nicholson who has just come back from Scotland preached. 2 Mon. We played 8 boys against 22 smaller ones and beat them. At last it has commenced to rain. 26. Thurs. This afternoon I went to the sports events at St. Aubin's School. 30. Mon. Took the train for St. Helier and left Jersey for St. Marlo at 8.30 this morn. I was as sick as I could be although the sea was calm. 8. Tues. Bought some cherries to carry back to Jersey. 17 Thurs. Fine. Papa bought me a half guinea bat for birthday. 24. Thurs. Fine but windy. Planted beans. 27 Fri. Cold wind. Went to be measured for clothes and to see Sadie she had a toothache and could not go with us for a drive but we went to St. Catherine's Bay. 1 Sat. Played a match of football against the 2nd club of Victoria College but were beaten. They got 2 goals and 3 tries we nothing. 20 Wed. Planted potatoes all the afternoon with Ernest and Willie. 22. Fri. I am 5 ft 11 1/2 in. high in stocking feet. The family leaves Jersey Island by steamer ship goes to England then leaves England for Halifax Canada; then to Boston; then by train to Portland Oregon with a lengthy stop in Decatur and other towns in Illinois where they have relatives; they visit a number of towns in Oregon before deciding to stay in Portland where they buy or rent a house; but the father decides he doesn't like it; he visits Santa Rosa California which he likes at first but then doesn't; so they visit the San Francisco Bay Area where they all seem happy and the Father buys 10 acres in San Leandro and that's where they end up. The diary recounts all aspects of the journey - the dirty hotels finding arrowheads in Illinois the changing landscape the cost of eggs and fruit in Oregon the fertility of the land the wildness of the land the trains the sleeping cars and much more. Here are some snippets: "Rough and foggy. Very sea-sick. Ship rolled a great deal. Steamed 190 miles. Still sea-sick. I am not able to sit at the table but the stewardess brings me something on deck. Sailed 240 miles. Wind in our favor. We get in the harbour very early and coming in a doctor boards our ship to see if we were bringing any disease. We waited until 6.30 for a train and got a 1st Class Car. I like the train very much the seats are leather and very comfortable. Arrived at Millie's at 7.30. Went in the woods. Made a fire. Ernest found a nest with brown eggs. Pa went to Boston with Willie and Ernest. Picked huckleberries. Pa Mamie Willie Bessie and I rode in a carriage to Welesley and visited Mr. Hannewell's place. we then went to Welesley College. Went to Millis's farm. He has 85 cows in his stables and a large piggery. Packed. Left Millis at 9 am and arrived at Boston at 10.30 am where we waited till 4 for the train. We got a Pullman Sleeping car and will only change at Decatur Ill. We are now near Niagara Falls - Crossed over the suspension bridge below the Falls. The river is very narrow rapid and water very rough. Capt. Webb was drowned here. Went through Canada - the country wild and barren looking. A ferry took the train over Lake St. Clair. Ernest Willie and I went to the "bluffs" along the Illinois river. We went in the buggy and Willie rode most of the way on horseback. We had dinner at John Brown's he gave me 2 arrow-heads of flint. The valley is very fertile and much corn is raised. Effie Winnie Bessie and I went back with Ma to Jacksonville IL. Went to Mamie Gregory's after tea. We passed over the Illinois the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Country somewhat undulating and not very rich. Arrived at Kansas City at 9 pm and put up at Blossom Hotel. The city looks untidy and unfinished. Went through Wyoming which is dried up. only sage growing. Stopped at Cheyene. Saw some Indians at one of the stations and passed through Rock Springs where many Chinese were massacred a short while ago. We ascended to a great height about 9000 feet. Arrived at East Portland and a steamer took the passengers across the Willamette river to Portland proper and then we went to Quimby House Hotel. This is a large town but the streets are very dirty. Crossed the river in the ferry and went to the house we have taken at the corner of 9th and L Street. Went out for a walk. Pa at Ashland but likes Eugene City best. Rainy day. Read "Stock Gambling". Pa joined the Public Library. I read "Congo" by H.M. Stanley. Went for a walk with Winnie and Bessie. They had their pictures taken. Went to the library and after dinner went towards Mt. Tabor to see a piece of land for sale. Kept Thanksgiving with three fowls for dinner. The roads are extremely muddy even in town. Went with PA to see the California steamer. Pa bought a ticket. He went on board this night. Went to Berkeley and visited the University grounds and museums. During the afternoon walked along lake Merritt. Took the ferry to San Francisco and visited Golden Gate Park and Cliff House. Saw the seals lying on rocks. Ma and Pa came back. They do not like Santa Rosa - it is too warm. Walked along the lake in the direction of Piedmont. Went fishing but caught nothing. Had teeth filled at Gilman's. Skinned a humming-bird. Pa bought 10 acres in San Leandro." ‎CUSTOMS OFFICERS BARLOW, DAY and HAGNER‎

‎1938 - 1939 ORIGINAL PRE WORLD WAR II MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL OF 3 CUSTOMS OFFICERS SEIZING GOODS AND ARRESTING SMUGGLERS IN THE PORT OF NEW YORK‎

‎NEW YORK CITY NEW YORK. Fair. 1938. On offer is an original 1938 - 1939 manuscript relic of pre World War II policing by three US Customs and Duty officers named Barlow Day and Hagner. The entries list seizures they made the date the name of the ship which pier the items seized and the value of these items. Historians and researchers of such work will be amazed at the breadth of the seized items beyond the assumed liquor tobacco and weapons. The notes detail such sundry items pyjamas perfume sandals table cloths lotion wallets shell boxes cameras tea jewellery coins and more. Included within the pages of the journal are several newspaper clippings. Four of them were obits for a man by the name of Sgt. John E. Day who died during WWII. He was the brother of custom's agent Edward F. Day. There are also a few articles about a narcotics bust mostly opium showing a woman by the name of Madeline Mayling as the suspect. In part: "June 9th 1939. United States Customs agents were set last night to crack down on a huge Broadway drug syndicate as a result of the arrest of a woman head of a gown shop and the seizure of more than $15000 worth of crude gum opium and morphine base on her person. The woman under arrest is Madeline Mayling 38 who operated the Helene Modes Inc. on the 6th floor of the Gayety Gaiety Theatre Building 1547 Broadway……She was captured as she walked off the Italian liner Vulcania last Friday night with 12 1/2 pound slabs of opium under her girdle. "I thought it was imported Roquefort or limburger cheese" she insisted. She is held in default of $25000 bail charged with smuggling. An alleged accomplice whose name is withheld also is under arrest….Other narcotics were found at her home and at her place of business a Broadway dress shop….In her apartment a fully loaded automatic pistol was also found…" Another article notes that a woman was hiding four pounds of pure heroin in the soles of her shoes; several pairs. The handwritten entry in the journal that shows where they arrested Madeline but she was going under the alias name of "Helen Hoffman" as the newspaper article states. There is also a small typed piece of paper which is titled "Enforcement Division Notes." This piece talks about Guard E. F. Day who was "strolling" on board the S. S. Pacific which was docked in Brooklyn at the time. He decided to search the seamen's wash room and found a bottle that ordinarily contained pickles when actually it was "Preserved Marijuana." It was concealed under the iron floor of the wash room. This is really a fascinating 37 pages of intimate details of the unique service these officers performed. There are about 40 different ships mentioned including: the Normandie California Virginia Ile de France New York Champlain Rotterdam Berlin Queen Mary Breman and many more. Some of the piers are; Constable Hook in Bayonne New Jersey Claremont Terminal in New Jersey New Briton Boat Landing in Staten Island Pier 18 North River Brooklyn piers and more. Finally in the back of this journal is two page handwritten entry about a Grand Jury session concerning the seizure of opium on board the ship SS Menclaus. Seems they found opium in the bottom of a bucket hidden under some clothing and belonging to Lee Foo Yung. The diary it's in poor shape with the cover detached but present and the cover is also torn at the spine in places. There are a few torn out pages but the diary itself has over 100 pages of which 37 have entries. Binding still looks good and there is a bit of foxing around the edges of the pages. The journal measures about 4 ¾" x 6 ¾". ‎1830 - 1867 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF FIVE 5 MANUSCRIPT JOURNALS HANDWRITTEN BY NOTED CONNECTICUT MEDICAL DOCTOR AND DENTIST PLYING HIS TRADE IN NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA‎

‎CHATHAM CONNECTICUT EAST HAMPTON CT BRAZIL. Good. 1830. On offer is an interesting archive of five 5 manuscript journals dated 1830 through 1867 handwritten by Dr. Nathaniel Oliver Cornwall 1816-1903 who was from Chatham Connecticut today known as East Hampton. Cornwall was a fascinating character would become a medical doctor and then later a dentist who spent a great deal of time in South America a more detailed bio follows. The archive will be of interest to historians and researchers of the era as the combined writings details on one hand the personal thoughts as the young man entered adulthood but also a reflection on the education he received. The archive details as follows: 1 1833 Marbled covered Copy Book which is also a Day Book. The beginning pages are ledger style entries showing his expenses inventory of his belongings etc. Then there are several pages of copy book type entries showing heights and distances some drawings. Finally in the back 8 pages of diary entries. This journal is the largest in the bunch measuring about 8" x 13" which gives you a lot of information on each page. Total number of handwritten pages is 55. In this journal he also talks about a ship named the "Ocean." 2 1830 Ledger style journal with 21 handwritten pages. Also in the front are two pages of poetry one titled "On the Independence of South America; Sung in New York" and the other titled "The Nashville Tragedy." There are a lot of names in this journal. 3 1863-1867 Receipt type ledger with expenses. This one is in Spanish or Portuguese kept while he was in Brazil. 12 handwritten pages. 4 1833 Writing work book where he practiced his alphabet letters etc. There is also a handwritten essay in the back. This journal has 17 handwritten pages. 5 Lastly and 1830 Day Book with 43 handwritten pages; expense type entries also listing many names. Some of the many names mentioned are: James Young Denton and Smith James Kane John Jacob Astor Thomas Milner Temple and Camp Minerva Howland Nathan Swain Joseph Hastings Anthony Billings Edward Jones Thomas Grosvenor Samuel Green Jonathan Curtis Theodore Barrell Charles Long James Pitney Thomas Jenkins Elijah Pollack Henry Bell James Vance and so many more. Here are some snippets: "Washington College March 20th 1830 Half past 11 o'clock Have for several days been thinking to write a diary a practice which I have not followed since the first winter of beginning Greek at the goodly town of Cheshire. I wish I had continued it just for the pleasure of accounting to the many many pleasing and as a matter of course often unpleasing incidents of my stay there and to see again my daily progress in Virgil Cicero Sallust and the first elements of Greek which I used to set down with minimal regularity. I shall though never forget those scenes. They are engraved firmly on my mind and the place where I first learned to taste the beauties of Virgil and to enjoy the elegant productions of Cicero….But why am I that moralizing upon the classes and so pedant like talking of my own acquisitions in them I don't know but tis to make a beginning to my journal which would make but poor appearance over to self for whom alone it shall be written without and for a want of which it has been so long neglected I suppose." "March 30th 1830 Been very insolent all day as respects to study…One week now and we shall be at liberty again. Next Wednesday afternoon will probably terminate my second term of college life. This term has passed rapidly with me and been very busy yet I find my mind frequently stretching to the end of it and welcoming its approach with an eagerness not a little unlike that of those who are less pleased with college than myself…How swift are the transitions of thought! How constantly on the wing is our universal cheerer and consoler. Hope! Thus I am continually led into a train of moralizing and thus my consoling pen will run on ____ in publishing the wandering incipiencies of my brain…." The smallest journal measures about 6" x 7 ½" and the largest one 8" x 13". All of them have paper covers and most are in good shape with some foxing on many of the pages. The cover on one of them is very torn but all in all the pages and bindings look good. BIO NOTES: to Dr. Nathaniel Oliver Cornwall 1816-1903 was born in 1816. As a child he attended local schools and then at about 14 years of age Nathaniel was sent to the school of Reverend Asa Cornwall in Cheshire and after that he went off to school in Granby. In 1833 he went to Episcopal Academy in Cheshire. In 1835 began attending Washington College and graduated 1839. After college Nathaniel Cornwall attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York State from which he graduated in 1846. After medical school he accepted a teaching job in South America and within a year decided to go into the medical field in Brazil. After an accidental meeting with a dentist also from Connecticut he decided to become a dentist instead of having a medical practice and for the rest of his career kept that as his profession while living in South America for the next 20 or so years. In 1860 on a visit home to the States he got married to Mary and the couple then returned to South America where his 3 children were born. He had two daughters one of whom died in infancy and a son Edward who became a NY physician. Dr. Cornwall retired relatively early in 1869 at age 53 and lived the rest of his life in Gildersleeve which is now Portland CT on an estate near the trolley line. The family originally had settled in Middletown and nearby areas in the 1700s. On offer is a superb early 19th Century manuscript relic of Irish literature poetry philosophy genealogy and practical remedies being a 220 page book self identified by Charles De Vesci of Templeogue Co. Dublin. While unconfirmed we believe this De Vesci is related to the noted and ancient family of peers of Ireland. The book is filled with handwritten copies of famous quotations poems and portions of literary works but also includes passages in Greek and some in code it seems. There are some essays some genealogical information notes on natural history historical retellings and even a few recipes and the thoughts of the author. The earliest date we find is 1822 and later dates to 1870s. The book may have writings in different hands or the differing penmanship of an aging man but notwithstanding historians and researchers will find a treasure trove of 19th Century thought. On offer is a charming original manuscript relic of one American woman's war service in support of her country being a birthday memory book and autograph album kept by a beloved World War II parachute rigger named Jenny. There are about 40 entries and most were done in late May 1944 by many of her co-workers and a few from sailors and other enlisted men and officers she knew. Given the dates involved Jennie and her friends may very well have helped in the preparation for the D-Day invasion which occurred a couple weeks later. The home towns of the women show how America came together for the war since there are ladies from Milton Massachusetts Seattle Washington Dearborn Michigan Leon Iowa and Cuero Texas. There is also a photograph of a motorcyclist named Joe who has inscribed it to Jennie. Spalding a midshipman who was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Navy by President Grant. Spalding was a member of surveying sloop The Enterprise which was assigned to take measurements of the mouth of the Mississippi and this is Spalding's log Vol. 2 with all the details of the survey. BIO NOTES: Spalding came from a prominent Portsmouth Maine family. He was killed in 1881 in Newport Rhode Island when a torpedo exploded prematurely. 32 pages 8.5 x 5.5 in. Seventy two years later in 1938 his daughter added some historical background by giving a brief history of her father's writings and a biographic note that he had 6 children and followed a career in law. The book begins with "The War in Italy" which is quite lengthy. There are about 79 pages of various poems and poetry most are complete some are shown in progress. All are well written. The binding is a little loose but all pages are intact. The clasp on the book does not work. ‎WORCESTER MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Good. 1898. On offer is an original late 19th Century manuscript diary dated 1898 Worcester Massachusetts handwritten by John Warden Jr. John does a fine job using this small flip book style notebook in a small precise hand rarely missing a day. A casual reading reveals that he is a member of a Quartet playing for different churches and lodges. He notes that his wife Eva has been sick a lot and having the doctor and at one time he says "Eva came home today feeling much better gained 5 lbs. weight 85 lbs." Researchers and historians of the era will have a wealth of financial and economic information along with his personal doings as he notes how much he pays for things the costs of car fair about his "wheel" his bicycle that he paid .15 for toilet paper and .50 for whiskey. On Tuesday Feb.15 he notes that the "Battleship Maine destroyed by an explosion in Havana." On Thursday April 21st he writes "war declared with Spain". He plays the organ in church and tells of his last day playing at the Hope Church saying he'd been doing it for 5 years and 3 months. He attends lodge meeting quite often and talks about planting vegetables and flowers etc. he says on sat. August 27th "some of the boys came home from the war and were saluted by 21 cannon shots & the mill shut down." The leather diary is in good condition save for the back cover missing. ‎1807 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT BOOK HANDWRITTEN BY A MEMBER OF A WELL KNOWN BRITISH FAMILY WHILE STUDYING AT THE NOTED QUAKER SCHOOL AT WIGTON IN ENGLAND‎

‎ALLONBY ENGLAND. Fair. 1807. On offer is a superb early 19th Century mathematics and complex arithmetic ciphering book. There are over 320 pages of text and titles in a lovely calligraphic hand including a folding table all in pen and ink. Identified as having belonged to the Costin Family of Allonby England this is believed to be a school book from the highly noted Quaker School at Wigton dated by paper watermarked 1807. This book was a massive effort by the unidentified Costin Family member but unique for the breadth and depth of the mathematical equations and complexity of the problems. The book stands as a testament to the quality of education at the Wigton School. The school book is in a very well handled state detached from the worn binding the contents are now loose the sections although individually sewn are coming away from each other. Some of the 8 x 10 inch initial pages maybe missing there is old damp/water staining to some but not all of the pages but overall Fair. BACKGROUND NOTES: Wikipedia: Wigton School also called Brookfield School or Friends' School was a private boarding school on the outskirts of Wigton Cumbria. The school was opened on 4 September 1815 by the Society of Friends Quakers for Cumberland and Northumberland. The initial student intake was 9 boys and 8 girls in premises at Highmoor in existing buildings. These first buildings were leased at an annual rent of 27 guineas. In 1826 the main school site opened at Brookfield commissioned by the Society of Friends. A London architect designed the buildings in classic Georgian style. The school motto was "We seek the truth." The school badge comprised a shield with a green background and diagonal river to represent the school's rural location with a beck small brook running through the grounds. One one side of the diagonal was a lamp to represent knowledge. On the other side was a set of scales to represent fairness and tolerance key Quaker virtues. The school expanded over the years. Student numbers peaked in the mid-1970s at around 210. Following the peak student numbers declined and in 1984 the school closed. ‎DETROIT MICHIGAN ANN ARBOR MI. Good. 1935. On offer is an interesting pair 2 of original manuscript diaries handwritten by a young Detroit Michigan girl named Ruth Clark. A casual reading finds she was related to Abraham Clark who signed the Declaration of Independence. In the first diary a five year book covering 1935 to 1939 Ruth 13 years old at the start does a super job of detailing her life and times as a high school student and then in the second book dated September 1939 to September 1940 she attends the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She writes of the politics university affairs dates getting "the curse" Coke dates seeing all the movies of the time like Gone With The Wind the cost of things back then which is fascinating in it's own right. She attended a speech by Eleanor Roosevelt another by the Arch Duke talks Michigan football when season tickets were $3.00! She listens to the Victrola goes home to Detroit on weekends by train just a great peek into her life during the glorious 1930's. She has some code language she uses which no doubt has something to do with her dates. On offer is a super original manuscript autobiography handwritten by Mr. David Buel Jr. who retrospectively recorded his memories and anecdotes etc. in 1857 a mere three years before his death. The journal is a fascinating detailed sketch of his family travel life events genealogy etc. starting with his birth in October 1784 through 1830s but we note 1853 references on the last page. He writes of being a member of the Constitutional Congress of 1821 his mother's death in 1826 a voyage to Savannah on the Steam Boat George Washington travel to Martinique and Nevis in 1812 and much more. The 8" x 10" leather bound lined ledger book has narrative on the first 40 pages. Bumping to extremities. Some loosening to hinges. Marbled endpapers. Overall G. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES: One online source provides: Hon. David Buel Jr. Born Litchfield Conn. Oct. 22 1784. Died in Troy. N.Y. August 16 1860. Mr. Buel's obit stated: "For more than a generation says the Troy Daily Whig Judge BUEL has been one of the best known and highly esteemed citizens of Troy. Prominent at the Bar he was as well for many years very active and efficient in all public concerns in both city and country. He always enjoyed public confidence and was most faithful and devoted to any cause which enlisted his energies. In 1821 he was a member of the Convention which revised the Constitution of this State. He distinguished himself in that body in the discussion of several important questions. He held the office of Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for several years receiving the office first from the old Council of Appointment. Ill health obliged him to resign this position in 1827. Spending some three years in the South soon after in pursuit of health he returned and devoted himself to his profession avoiding public life. In 1842 he was appointed one of the State Regents of the University which office he held at the time of his death. We cannot enumerate the various positions of honor and trust connected with business charitable and religious interests which the deceased held in later years. They were numerous and every duty belonging to them was discharged with rigid fidelity. In religious faith he was an Episcopalian and for many years to the time of his decease he was senior Warden of St. Paul's Church. Judge BUEL was born in Litchfield Conn. Oct. 22 1784. His father DAVID BUEL moved to Troy in 1798 and resided here until his death in 1836. DAVID Jr. entered Williams College in the Fall of 1802 and graduated in 1805 and soon after began the study of the law at Albany in the office of DAVID JONES where his fellow-students were JOHN C. SPENCER and WHEELER BARNES; He concluded his studies in the office of ABRAM VAN VECHTEN. He commenced the practice of the law of Troy in 1809 and remained an industrious laborer in the profession until 1854 when failing health compelled him to abandon it. Though for a long time feeble under the weight of years it was only last week that his last illness was deemed of an alarming nature. He endured all with patience and without complaint. His exit from the world was calm and peaceful -- so that the sleep of death could hardly be distinguished from the sleep of exhausted nature. Throughout his sickness he retained his consciousness and his eye of intelligence even when from bodily weakness he was unable to speak. Hoffman LLD 1865 - 1946 of the Prudential Life Insurance Company in their statistical department He was a leader in Government Health Policy during this period. ‎MILFORD CONNECTICUT. Good. 1869. On offer is an interesting manuscript diary dated January 1 1869 through to March 1870 handwritten by William B. Clark of Milford Connecticut. Mr. Clark is a cobbler who works heeling shoes along with farm work at home. His is married to Mary and his children include Willie Frank and Charlotte. William is a prolific writer writing every day from the mundane to the sensational: local events including seeing Tom Thumb from the train births deaths family news work and mentions of the flu which appears to be going around. Here are some snippets: Jan 1 - New Year's Day. Willie's foot and leg in part was scalded this morning. Went down to church to bid on W. Seat. Same price as last year 12 dollars. Right cold. Jan 13 - Arrived in New York this morning about 6 o'clock. Pleasant but coolish. After wandering around till 10 o'clock went to Tracy. After work could get a job but could not agree on price. Left for home on 4:25 train. Jan 18 - cold day. commenced snow about noon. Commenced to work in straw factory. Blake's part pushing the balls all day. Am tired.Jan 20 - Splendid day. cutting cloth this forenoon. Afternoon curling hats. Nice work but hard on the fingers. Night clear wind blows. ‎1895 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND FASHION JOURNAL HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG KANSAS CITY MISSOURI GIRL DAUGHTER OF ONE OF MISSOURI'S WEALTHY BUSINESS FAMILIES‎

‎KANSAS CITY MISSOURI. Fair. 1895. On offer is a super manuscript relic of 19th Century life in Kansas City Missouri dated 1895 through 1904 1898 and 1899 are the fullest handwritten by a young woman 13 in 1895 named Elsa Dorothy Field who does a great job as a diarist detailing her life and times as a member of a wealthy family headed by her father Edmund B. Field a bank broker and her mother Enna N. Field. She had a sister by the name of Marcia and a brother by the name of Edmund Mills. The beginning of the 150 page diary lists three different addresses the final being "2415 E. 9th St." a house her grandmother purchased to be closer to the family. At the beginning Elsa uses the first 12 pages to recap her life from 1895 to 1898 and then she writes not daily but with more regularity. She states at one point in 1899: "It really seems like I might write once a week but I really don't have time. I will close now hoping that whenever I write I can be able to record a happy and prosperous time. There is one advantage in not writing often and that is I forget the petty disturbances and things and remember when I write only things that amount to something." As with many teenagers from time immemorial she is introspective to a fault and perhaps self esteem is an issue. She writes on November 19th 1899: "This is my seventeenth birthday. I think that if I could have seen myself as I am now on my seventh birthday I would have been very much disappointed as I supposed of course that I would be a very good musician have lots of friends and a great deal of influence be exceedingly beautiful and have a nice and pretty home. As it is I am a very poor musician I have some friends that I like very well and others whom I care for merely because they are somebody to talk to I have only a little influence and I am not at all satisfied with my appearance. There is one thing that I wanted that I have gotten and that is a beautiful home. Perhaps I wished for things which I will do well to accomplish by 27." Her writings will be of particular interest to historians and researchers of the history of fashion and clothing as she describes in great detail her wardrobe including any new dresses she receives for various social events and being a very social woman she writes quite often about her wardrobe. Here are some snippets: "January 18th 1902 Looking over this book it seems that I have spent a great deal more space in describing my clothes than in anything else but I assure you that if I have spent a great deal of time on it here I do not in any other way for mama often scolds me because I care little about it. Not that I never am dressy or inclined to prim. I simply wear what is sewed on and the best person in the world can't sew everything on a girls dress. When I do fix up or dress to go out I look very swell and quite grand as I am tall but when I am not I look like a reformer. Notwithstanding all of this I am going to describe my new dress which I got just in time to wear to Mattie Lee's…." "February 23rd 1895 We went out to Miss Janie's today. Percey and I rode out on our bicycle and the others road on the cable car. She is making us some lovely doll dresses. Percy built us a nice playhouse in the barn. One of the rooms will lock. We have lots of fun. Papa went away Thursday. He will return Sunday." "January 1st 1896 This is New Years and a great many things have happened. Aunt Zella died but first Uncle Joe died. Sister got here safely and can ride. We went to El Dorado. Miss Janie went too. We staid three weeks and met Mr. Conn. When we came back to Kansas City grandma Mills did not want us to stay at her house anymore and we did not want to stay so we went out on very short notice and found a rented house that suits very well. I go to Humbolt School so does sister. I like it better than I do Woodland School. My last birthday I was thirteen…." "January 13th 1898 After awhile Carlton came. She and Roberta looked so nice in their new dresses. Carlton's was green Bedford cord trimmed in pink satin braid. Roberta's wine color trimmed in black passmenten over white. While we were talking Rosa brought in chocolate and cake. We also told fortunes with our fortune teller doll. Roberta liked hers so well that she wrote it down and took it home. A week from today I will get my grades. I will write them here if I am not ashamed to do it. I hoped I can write them but I won't unless they are good." "May 15th 1898 I have been wanting to write in my diary of over a week but have had so much else to do that I had to let it go. It is just two weeks until school is out. I do not suppose I will have very many more hard lessons….Since I last wrote the United States have engaged in war with Spain. So far we have been victorious but I am very much afraid that it can't last long. Commodore Dewey scored quite a victory over the Spanish fleet at Manila and if he would be enforced could easily hold the Philippine Islands. Those in authority seem slow to act and though it is almost two weeks since it happened no reinforcements have been sent and I am afraid that he may have to leave the islands. I don't say that I would be glad in the least if the U.S. should be defeated yet I think it would be a good thing if the eastern states who brag so ever since the war between the Confederates and Federals would get a taste of war. Here it is the middle of May and although March April and this far in May we have had scarcely a day when It has not rained or been threatening……." "June 21st 1898 Not very long ago I went down to see Carlton in the course of a rather gay and perhaps giddy conversation Carlton asked me if I thought that I had ever reached the highest of happiness or thought that I would be reach there. After a great deal of talking and laughter we decided that neither of us or anyone had reached that height. We also decided that we would keep track of our happy times and try to see if everything was going just as we wanted it to. I do not think every time I am having a good time I will stop to see if just everything is going right or think about anything that would damp my pleasure because if I did the wrong things would swallow up the pleasant things and I am sure there is no time when everything is perfect or a flaw could not be found in the most delightful things….I am going downstairs in a minute and make candy with my sister…." "July 26th 1898 The bells are just striking six. I have just finished a letter to Marcia and Lucille who are spending two weeks with Grandma on her Petlis County farm. I don't think I have had any particularly gay or happy time this last month this last month though I have made friends with one real nice girl Marion Finlay with whom I took supper out at Fairmount Park the forth. Mama is just getting able to be around. On account of her sickness I have had to do quite great deal of sewing really not very much but it seems quite a great deal to me as I have never done much. I tucked Marcia's an old liner skirt of mine which was all right but had been out grown by me……I would not be writing here if I had not gotten so warm that I wilted my white collar and don't want to put another one on. I also see that I have gotten ink on my cuffs. I really should put on my swill but when I wear a thin dress I have to wear so many skirts that it makes me hot. Now I have on high black shoes and ribbed black stockings white duck skirt cut in the fashion of the day dark red leather belt white skirt waist red necktie hair in "Gretchen braids." "August 1st 1899 It is over a year since I have written in my diary though since then a great many things have happened and passed which would have been nice to record here if I only had some of the time that I had last summer. Then I was having an exceedingly quiet time and I thought a stupid time but now I look back upon as a very happy and peaceful two months even though mama was sick and the few friends I had whom I visited were out of town. Almost exactly one month after my last writing mama felt like she was able to leave home and go to Excelsior Springs. We went. I found Marion and a Miss Virginia Jones who proved to be a most charming and pleasant Mississipian just my own age over there. We three together with Jessie and Edna Butt two K. C. girls had a very gay time together indeed. After we had staid at Excelsior two weeks we all came home very much fitted mama was especially so. Rosa our old girl disappointed us about coming home so we have done our own work all winter. The day we got home from Excelsior we heard that Virginia who had left the Springs a few days before us for her home in Oxford Mississippi was still in town and that her family could not go home on account of the Yellow Fever….Marion gave a very unique and gay supper and a little informal dance afterwards. She gave it in their new house which was then very near done. The supper a very nice one was eaten on impromptu tables and as the gas fixtures had not been put in after it commenced to get dark the people at one end of the table could not see those at the other. We danced by candle light and to the music of a mandolin guitar and piano. Of course the waltz and two-step were danced but we like the Virginia Reel best…." "August 4th It took us a long time to make up our minds where to go if we went anywhere. Mama Percy Marcia Lucille Edmund Mills and I wanted very much to go west but we did not know whether we could or not. Finally after a great deal of discussion we found ourselves at ten o'clock June 27th on the west bound Union Pacific and the next day at half past eleven we arrived in Colorado Springs. We went immediately to the Spaulding Hotel. Colorado Springs is a beautiful clean place and although the surrounding mountains seem almost at hand the nearest are about three miles distant. They seem close on account of the unusually clear air. Pikes Peak is twenty five miles from there yet is very easily seen. All the houses look as though they have just been painted and there care is very great many nice and pretty ones. There are forty millionaires living on Cascade Avenue. The streets being so wide smooth pretty and otherwise nice the place is a perfect paradise for bicycles…." "I won't attempt to tell of the many interesting ways in which we spent our time in Colorado Springs but will say that I don't regret it at all. The night of the third of July Pikes Peak was illuminated for the first time and although we were fully 25 miles form the top we saw it plainly. It was so cold out that night that we couldn't stay out even though w had on winter wraps as there was a blizzard on Pikes Peak…." "October 6th 1899 Last night all of us went to see Paine's Battle of Manila and fireworks. It was the best thing of its kind that I have ever seen. They had some clowns acrobats and other vaudeville performers who did some very amusing things. The show was given at Exposition Park. Quite a way in front of the seats there was some scenery to represent the Bay of Manila with the Spanish Ships and the castle. The soldiers came out of the castle first and drilled and when they finished threw themselves down to watch the performers that I have spoken of. Finally a serviceman came tearing in telling them that the Americans were coming. Then everything was in confusion soldiers were running every way at once and the women who had been watching the drill ran screaming to the fort. Then the ships opened fire. When the smoke cleared we saw that the Spanish Ships had been damaged and the castle badly damaged by fire. There was a skirmish between three Mexican's and Spaniards on land in which the Red Cross nurses made their appearance. This finished the battle and the fireworks commenced. The fireworks were beautiful. The consisted of fireworks and sky rockets and a great many lit pieces. There was an elephant who moved his trunk and tail very naturally a man who preformed on the trapeze and other things." "January 2nd 1901 Well now I am a twentieth Century Girl and I don't see that I am any different from the girl I was two days ago. I am behind in writing up my diary as usual. If I would write as I go along there would have been many things to write but when I skip so much time I must only mention the most important things which have happened. For a long time mama has been wanting to give a reception and every fall something has hindered her and she has had to put it off. This summer however we made up our minds that we would give it this fall about the last of October and made up our lists and arranged different things……" "October 6th 1901 I must tell about my dress. It was made by Mrs. Dexter the best dressmaker in town and everything about it is fine. It is a light blue silk foulard with white figures and little black dots. The skirt has little pleats on the side breadths about two inches apart and there are two graduated circular flounces on the bottom headed with two bands of black velvet ribbon. It was not only my first long dress but it was made with a slight sweep. The waist is made of white chiffon over white silk with a shaped bolero of the tucked silk. The edge of the jacket is finished with lace. There are a number of other little things about the dress which make it very stylish and handsome. Oh I almost forgot to tell about the lining for the skirt or rather the drop skirt which is of blue silk taffeta just to match the dress and furnished with accordion pleated ruffle. Altogether the dress is beautiful and very becoming but I am sure that it is much too fine for me. I enjoyed wearing it and I am very sure that grandma loves to see me in it…." "About the first of October we had our fall festivities which have dwindled considerably in respect to parades but increased in the number of balls. This year we had only one parade The Karnival ___ Parade which really wasn't fit to look at but the two balls which were given in Convention Hall were beautiful. The Priests of Pallas Ball was first and the main festoons of it were the Electric Lights. About eleven the hall suddenly dark remained so a few seconds and when the lights came back the effect was beautiful. The Carnival or Masque Ball was very much like the first only less dignified. I only got to go to one of them this time but expect to go to both next year…" "October 9th 1904 For a long time after reading over some of my past notes in this book I have sat and wondered whether I would put anything else down or not. The rest seems so unlike me that is I still seem to be out talking to absolute strangers and recounting things that I really care very little about. I have always wished that I had time to write frequently and dwell more on my pleasant friends and the things I think as it is all I can say of the whole year that I have neglected this book is that I have kept an account of the summer before last which I spent in Europe and that during the following winters when I made music my only study…….I am not going to say anymore for I hesitate to bring this little book to a close but sometimes when I feel that a new chapter in my life has begun I will write the closing lines. Although I doubt if anyone ever can tell just when one period in a life story closes and another begins." Included is a three page letter dated April 22 1901 by Elsa to Nadine tucked the pages. The covers of the 6" x 7¼" book are detached but present. The cover page the first two pages of writing and the back page are loose. McGilvray Sep. 8 1913 - Nov. 2 2001 a young Forest Hills Louisiana woman to her boyfriend and future husband Marvin Louis Gordey who lived in Port Arthur Texas and worked at the Texaco company store. The group of letters detail life in Depression Era Louisiana with mention of disgraced Governor Huey P. Long; hardships of the depression has daddy worried with cotton selling only for 4 cents a pound; had barbecued goat which was terrible; some sexual innuendo; a great amount of detail relating to the local news and events of Forest Hills High School and the town itself; flooding of the Red River around Forest Hills and Alexandria; three persons running for Governor when Huey P. Long quit and much much more. All our multi-page quite lengthy and very legible. ‎MEMPHIS TENNESSEE TN. Good. 1908. On offer is a super original 1908 manuscript diary handwritten by the extremely popular and very wild Consuelo Pollard a 17 year old girl who lived in Memphis Tennessee with her parents and older brother Thomas. Census info mentions brothers Edwin and William too. No shrinking violet she writes that she was very very popular swamped with admirers and many proposals. Mrs. Pollard had a hard time keeping her teenager in line and was not a happy parent. Here are some snippets: "I ought not put this in this book but can't help it. Mamma got mad at me indeed it is nothing new and raised the ___. Wish I was dead or away off somewhere. She always picks on me anyway. I certainly wish I was a boy. Not that I want her to care for me but so as I could get out and do what I wanted to and would try and never be near so as I would be in the way. It certainly is awful to get the ___ if you do it and if you don't do it. Thurs 12 Stayed at Bonds all day had a good time. Went home to Marias and Judge blessed her out. Then she stayed all night at our house. Dana and I played Tom and Maria at Five Hundred. Fri 13Will came down. Walked home with Maria just as Judge was leaving. We hid behind a tree and let him go. Then raked up everything cooked took magazines "Home Runs" and went to the woods and had a picnic for two.' Her steady boyfriend Leslie was away often and she didn't hesitate to take advantage by going out with other boys but Leslie was not happy with that: 'Leslie came in the evening and Maria also was here. He and I started out driving and old Maria pressed in with us so we came home. Leslie and I had an awful fuss that night asked me to marry him and run off that night. I wouldn't do it so he got mad. I came in and told mamma everything he said. I certainly was blue and didn't sleep a wink that night.' On a much more frightening note her family is devastated by a house fire: 'Retired and about 4 oclock in the morning our house caught on fire. Kate jumped out the back window with her merry widow - had not another thing the cop broke the front window and woke me up.' More trouble comes to the family later in the year: a shooting incident involving the man next door her brother and a black man: 'While he was here there was a shot and I didn't notice it very much. Five minutes later one next door and it was the carpenter shooting at a negro who was stealing lumber five minutes later I heard something and Tom got the pistol and shot at a man.' ‎MIAMI FLORIDA FL. Good. 1943. On offer is a rather unique original World War II notebook diary handwritten by an unidentified Military secretary who went to work for the War Department Miami Beach Military Law Section 1943 - 45. A later 1952 entry mentions that he was bitten by a spider and his blood vessels collapsed in his arm and he had "2½ years of trouble". The journal is a real hodgepodge of writings from daily activities to notes regarding receiving Mein Kampf various Captains Majors U.S. Post Engineers Officer's Candidate School AAF Security and Intelligence Division at Albion Hotel taking POW depositions and more. The author often appears very judgmental and has some rather prejudiced opinions. He reports about U.S. Navy taken Hotel Everglades July 30th 1942 and the following day they are ordered to get out Miami Beach Law section asst. director of academic training investigations U.S post engineers OCS Library moves to San Antonio takes depositions for Security and Intelligence Division at Albion Hotel POW Depositions. People he worked for Major Kriens Capt. Thos. E. Anthony Col. Wood Stephen J. Stephens - Civ. Per. Dir. Capt. R. R. Richards Capt. Wendell Busk Major Denver Capt. Grove's investigation Lt. Ludwig. Places mentioned Albion Hotel Hotel Everglades Miami Colonial Hotel Vanderbilt OCS Library. Later we read he then moves to Miami residing at 677 N.W. 99 St. and working for American Express. Wife's name Rita mentions Fedelle Emma and Donald but no mention of his own name. In total there are 40 pages with writing. The flip style note pad was designed to be used then the pages were torn off daily. The top page is detached but present. The pages are newsprint delicate in areas ink and pencil writing some pages have surface wear. A few entries in shorthand. Diary is in wonderful note pad with beautiful cover image. The note pad base is metal and the embossed cover is leather with gold overlay and metal hinges with wear. 3" x 5 ½" x 1". ‎1935 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF ONE MAN'S DESPERATE DEPRESSION ERA JOB AT ONE OF THE MOST REMOTE PLACES IN AMERICA‎

‎CAPE SARICHEF ALASKA. Good. 1935. On offer is an interesting original 1935 manuscript diary handwritten by a hard working single young man named George R. Wilson we believe who lived somewhere near Saginaw or Flint Michigan but whose diary reveals an utterly unique experience of working at one of the most remote jobs on the planet. Rather sparsely written with about one third of the diary having entries George wrote of his attempts to find work in 1935 at the height of the Depression Era and the temporary jobs he managed to get. He worked for the Michigan Unemployment Census the Emerging Relief Administration the Durant Hotel as a house detective the Federal Housing Administration and had other odd jobs. He carefully noted in the diary the number of hours he worked and the salary he earned. But it is George's good fortune to receive a job offer July 4th when he received a letter from Ketchikan asking if he would accept a position as 2nd assistant at the Scotch Gap Lighthouse in Alaska at a salary of $1560. per annum. The Cape Sarichef Light was the most western in the Northern hemisphere as well as the most isolated. The station closed from Dec 1st to March 1st because the Bering Sea was frozen. Because of the isolation civilians who worked there were given a full year vacation after 3 years of duty and the Coast Guard members were rotated after one year. In 1933 it was said that one of the keepers had a breakdown because of the isolation. Only a few trappers could get through to the station in the harsh winter months. On July 17 the author notes 'July 17 Rec'd letter from Ketchikan stating I had been nominated for 2nd ass't at Cape Sarichef also finger print form.' On July 28 the author left Flint MI for Bellingham Washington where he boarded the SS "North King" for Cape Sarichef on August 1. He made many stops along the way and noted these and the route in his diary. He occasionally worked loading canned salmon on the ship. On Aug 6th he was given the oath of office by the Captain of the tender "Hemlock". While anchored off Kodiak the author made the following entry: 'Aug 14.Anchored off Kodiak at 6:00 AM. Tied up at cannery about 1:00 PM. Visited Russian Orthodox Church. Kodiak was settled about 1774. Talked with Charles Madsen noted hunter game warden and guide. A Kodiac bear was killed 5 miles from Kodiak which was 13 1/2 ft long and weighed 2255 lb. A bear killed by Madsen was 5 ft around the neck. The way we came to Kodiak is about 1700 miles from Bellingham.' After a trip of three weeks the author arrived at Cape Sarichef on August 21st: Left Scotch Gap at 11:30 AM and reached Cape Sarichef about 1:30 PM. A.I. Sutherland keeper George C Francis 1st Asst. We are in Lat 54 35' 50" and long. 164 56' 02". This light was built in 1903. It is a 3rd order light gas mantle and is 185 ft above high tide. Lee Harpole was keeper leaving today. Sutherland gets $1800 and Francis $1620. After his arrival at Cape Sarichef the author made occasional short entries. He wrote of: the arrival of the mail boat "Star" on various days; receiving a mackinaw and other clothing he had ordered; visits from two trappers in the area Fred Webber and Exel Samuelson; seeing caribou once seeing 62 at one time; trapping foxes; closing the station at midnight on Nov 30th not to reopen until Mar 1; picking up mail at Scotch Gap; a few daily activities - getting hair cut washing taking pictures eating lbs of flaxseed; On Dec 29 the author made the following entry: Began misty rain about 3 PM. ‎SUN VALLEY CAMP SUNBURY PENNSYLVANIA. Good. 1942. On offer is a fascinating manuscript relic of World War II pilot training and home front activity being a handwritten diary and journal of an unidentified American serviceman. In a beautiful inscribed September 30 1942 as a gift leather 9 x 6 inch book with gilt stamped cover and spine treatment and 5 bands on the spine the author in precise hand writes from October 3 1942 through to June 1 1944 the mundane personal needs such as being robbed having his tonsils out a party at the White House and of course his pilot training at Sun Valley Camp in Sunbury Pennsylvania and then to New York Scranton Waco Texas and back to Sunbury then Camp Upton. We also note that he mentions his 6th anniversary June 24th 1943. Here is a snippet: "Arrived at "Sun Valley Camp" in Sunbury Pa. at six this evening. It was a beautiful day and altho' war regulations required a 35 M.P.H. speed the driving did not seem tedious. Of particular note was the booming war industries enroute and the mile long freight trains bearing tanks guns and other war material. The camp was formerly C.C.C. and in it's day it won the prize for being the best in the country. The mountain slopes from the back of our barrack and a beautiful ski run ends at the door. Sunbury is typically small town nestling in a valley between two branches of the Susquehanna River and completely surrounded by mountains. The valley is ideal for flying with many large level fields suitable for emergency landings. Lex Hart and I wandered about town this evening a bit. The prospects for any activity at this time seem remote - time will tell. We may fly tomorrow - weather permitting - from now on we live for the weather." The book ends with a note: "Back to Gulfport after a perfect furlough. ‎ABOARD THE USS JACK MILLER SOUTH PACIFIC. Good. 1943. On offer is a super archive of original manuscripts photographs and documents handwritten and compiled by William Clement Dunn who served in the United States Navy from September 21 1943 to October 1945 aboard the renowned USS Jack Miller. The archive is comprised of a photo album handwritten 'My Life in the Service' diary a four 4 page detailed list of the travels of the Jack Miller a hard cover notebook in which he took notes during his training a super United States silk flag with 46 stars and a piece of a larger flag which we believe had been the flag flown by the USS Jack Miller and lastly news releases during his tour of duty caricatures done by a friend on military stationary and other assorted papers. The diary has his complete service record lists of buddies and 160 pages of dated entries describing his experiences. The entries start July 28 1943 and end October 29 1945. He describes boot camp "the beginning of the end of individualism" and a 16 week electronics course. He then went to Houston Texas and was assigned to the then newly commissioned ship the USS Jack Miller. In May of 1944 he went on a shake down cruise and wondered whether they would head east or go through "the ditch" Panama Canal. They headed west and travelled extensively throughout the Pacific Theatre. The photo album includes three 3 large photos and over 100 shots of life on the ship equipment he worked with people he knew and places he docked. There are also photos of the signing of the armistice with the Japanese and photographs of the signature page signed by MacArthur and the Japanese. The pages of the album are chipped and flaking but the photos are in excellent shape. ‎DEVON ENGLAND. Good. 1946. On offer is a fascinating original circa 1946 manuscript notebook handwritten by noted British author and Vimy Ridge combatant Ulric Nisbet Captain H.U.S. Nisbet. The book is comprised of two sections: a 32 page retrospective autobiography titled "Memories of my Childhood". Flipping the book over and there is an 88 page transcription of materials relating to the First World War the majority about the capture of Vimy Ridge. We note on page two of his War Experiences he was a Captain in the Royal West Kent Regiment and also a Liaison Officer with the 29th Canadians during the battle of Vimy Ridge. Adding further depth to the manuscript are a number of old postcards photographs and other related ephemera within these pages including some family photographs and an old programme dated 1910 from a school play he acted in playing Orpheus. BIO NOTES: Ulric Nisbet 1897 - 1987 was a British writer and the author of "Thoughts on the Purpose of Art" 1934 "Spread No Wings" 1937 and "Old school tie: recollections of Marlborough before the First World War 1964". He also published books under the pseudonym Hugh Callaway. ‎BRITISH MANDATED 'PALESTINE' ISRAEL THE HOLY LAND. Good. 1947. On offer is a super original 1947 manuscript diary handwritten by Maurice we believe Smith a British soldier later an Officer in British Mandated 'Palestine' beginning February 28th when Maurice leaves the transit camp in Dover for the journey to Palestine via Toulon and Port Said. Writing approximately 130 pages somewhat sporadically Maurice seems to have spells when he writes diary entries every day stops and then resumes writing again. Most of his entries are long with plenty of detail giving an insight into his character his duties and the reality of conflict. At first he seems interested only in sleeping eating drinking and watching films but he is promoted to officer rank and seems to take army life more seriously. Many entries include operational and technical details. He was based in or worked in many locations including: Hebron Arathanya Transjordan Saraband Kantara Jaffa Rehoveth and Lydda. Here are some snippets and notes: "From what I saw of it it was a nice place Dover but I may be wrong; Had a lecture on "Walking out" in which we were told about French girls and wines; Better food. That's the main thing and my reason for volunteering for this job serving in the officers and civilians lounge on board The Empire Battleaxe to Port Said; We were troubled by the wogs a lot though as they were following us all over the place trying to sell their goods; I was able to smoke like a chimney as I had received my free issue; At a dance There were only 2 girls there and everyone was fighting for them; Went to Saraband as an escort with the water wagon; Provided a cordon for the 68th Rifles who are going to search an Arab settlement west of Rehoveth; The duty on the docks is OK but the food the cook dishes up is something awful; Bit of a flap on at Haifa. Illegal immigrant ship; We have started on a new type of operation clearing mines from the railway line between Petal Tigus and Lydda; An Arab has thrown a bomb through another Arabs shop window; About 10.30 Sten Gun fire was heard later found out it was a party returning from the pictures and had run towards the sentry and no messing he opened up. On offer is a fascinating and sometimes very sad peek into the mind and soul of a 1960s Hippie Era woman who details her dreams her therapy sessions and her deepest darkest and most personal revealing thoughts on her psycho sexual problems within this original handwritten and typed manuscript archive. A rather beautiful woman included are approximately 12 photos of her and her cat Nina as she refers to herself married name is likely Miller as her husband is Chuck Miller is very much the beatnik bohemian and hippie who reveals and extraordinarily intimate personal history following almost a clichéd life: writing originally we believe from either Flatbush or Brooklyn New York she settled in Fire Island in the 1950s and remained through most of the 1960s. She seems to be of a European background likely French mentioning many friends in England and France her husband is a writer addicted to pornography. In her notes she mentions it was her ability and love of talking 'sexy-dirty' that netted him back when they first met but the origin of her problems begin with childhood and abandonment issues. As per her therapist she records many of her dreams experiments with marijuana as part of her treatment and within the pages of the archive we read of her desires and intimacies with her therapist though we are unsure how much of it was real or imagined. While some of the reading is entertaining funny and insightful more often it is manic often very racy and straight talking but also tinged with sadness melancholy a lack of fulfillment and emotionally disturbing. She has some very major issues as to why she seems to desire 'negro' men her inability to have sex with Jewish men her father was Jewish and her parents who went from 'torturing' her by kissing each other in front of her yet them denying her any affection - her father would tell he she was his 3rd cousin and to stop calling him Daddy. At one point she writes that she watched a little girl sit on her own father's lap and being affectionate which causes Nina to begin a crying jag. Researchers and historians of psychosexual problems would be hard pressed to find a more intimate and revealing personal account.
