‎German operatic soprano who sang with the New York Metropolitan Opera from 1912 to 1919; renowned for her wildly popular Jenny Lind concerts in the 1920s. IPS 3½" X 5½" n.p. n.d. Inscribed to pianist John G. Leiser. Fine. Striking full-length outdoors pose in fur coat standing in an elaborate formal garden boldly inscribed in black fountain pen across the center "To John G. Leiser / with all good wishes / Frieda Hempel." With original envelope. Accompanied by TLS from secretary 2pp 8½" X 11" New York NY 1926 March 19. Addressed to John Leiser. Very good. Tells "the origin of the Jenny Lind concerts": "In 1920 the year of the 100th anniversary of Jenny Lind's birth the St. Eric Society of New York. wanted to honor the memory of the great singer in some way. it was decided the celebration should take the form of a reproduction of the first Jenny Lind concert given in America which as you know was held in Castle Garden in 1850. The President and also members of the committee of the society approached Miss Hempel on the subject of appearing in the role of the beloved Jenny Lind. Miss Hempel after considering the matter an entire summer finally consented and spent many weeks reading and studying for the novel role. The concert eventually took place at Carnegie Hall October 6th 1920. The success of the performance was unprecedented." With original envelope. unknown‎

‎The volume traces the life and career of Mahler from his birth to his appointment to the Vienna Hofoper. This long awaited revised volume I completes Henry-Louis de La Grange's four-volume English language biography of the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler (1860?1911), which is widely considered to be the definitive work on the subject. The present instalment, covering the years 1860 to 1897, traces the life and career of Mahler from his birth in a small village in Bohemia to his appointment to the Vienna Hofoper, then the most prestigious opera house in the world. It describes his family background, his student days at the Vienna Conservatory, his private life, and his burgeoning career as both conductor and composer. Starting at a small summer theatre in Bad Hall, his first engagements took him to Laibach (Ljubljana), Olm tz (Olomouc), Kassel, Prague, and Leipzig, before he was appointed to principal posts at the important opera houses of Budapest (1888) and Hamburg (1891). By now Mahler had also begun to establish himself as a composer. Some of his major works ? starting with Das Klagende Lied (1881) ? the early Wunderhorn songs, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen , and the first three symphonies date from this period of his life. While regularly rejected by contemporary critics, today they are favourites of the concert repertoire. Widely recognised as Gustav Mahler's pre-eminent biographer, Henry-Louis de La Grange (1924?2017) ? author of the 4-volume, 5,000-page definitive study of the composer's life and work ? was awarded a professorship by the government of Austria and an honorary Doctorate from the Juilliard School of Music. He lectured extensively, organised concerts, exhibitions, and music festivals, and contributed to film documentaries and radio features. Together with Maurice Fleuret he founded the M diath que Musicale Mahler in Paris. German musicologist and conductor Sybille Werner started working with Henry-Louis de La Grange in 2003. She has repeatedly lectured and published on the performance history of Mahler's works, and in 2018 received the Mahler Award of the Sociedad Mahler Mexico. Her conducting activities have taken her beyond New York, her former residence, and the USA to Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, and the UK. Currently she is based in Toblach and associated with the Gustav Mahler Music Weeks.‎

‎"L'auteur de la Marseillaise a suscité maintes études. Mme Marguerite Henry-Rosier a pour ainsi dire renouvelé le sujet, le complétant, en tout cas, et fixant de façon définitive la figure de Rouget de Lisle. En plus des pièces citées depuis les travaux de Leroy de Saint-Croix, Mme Henry-Rosier a fouillé les archives publiques, à Lons-le-Saulnier, Besançon, et des collections particulières et familiales : elle on a sorti de nombreux et piquants renseignements jusqu'ici inconnus ou négligés. Après ce travail si consciencieux et qui se lit comme un roman, les diverses légendes que l'on a bâties sur notre chant national sont définitivement écartées, et l'immortel hymne de Rouget de Lisle ne peut plus être dénié à son auteur. Il me semble toutefois que Mme Henry-Rosier a traité trop succinctement la question du 'Sargines' de Dalayrac, l'une des visibles sources d'inspiration de Rouget de Lisle ; l'on pourrait aussi tirer au clair les allégations singulières du violoniste Alexandre Boucher, qui s'est cru le premier inspirateur do la mélodie. Ces réflexions ne m'empêchent pas de louer hautement ce petit volume et son excellente présentation." (A.
