Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Bold autograph signature in pencil "George Gershwin" on an album sheet dated 1936 at the left in another hand together with a second signature from the same album and apparently same occasion being that of Anne Brown signed "Anne Brown / 'Bess' / 'Porgy and Bess'" creator of the role of Bess.
Porgy and Bess was first performed at the Colonial Theater in Boston on September 30th 1935. It opened in New York at the Alvin Theater on October 10th of that same year starring Anne Brown as Bess and Todd Duncan as Porgy. The work includes a number of Gershwin's best-known and loved tunes including Summertime and I Got Plenty o' Nuttin both of which were among the pieces performed here. After the Broadway run a tour started on January 27 1936 in Philadelphia and traveled to Pittsburgh and Chicago before ending in Washington D.C. on March 21 1936. During the Washington run the cast—as led by Todd Duncan—protested segregation at the National Theatre. Eventually management gave in to the demands resulting in the first integrated audience for a performance of any show at that venue. Given the dating of the Gershwin signature we understand that these were both obtained during that historic run of the performance. unknown
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph letter from the American lyricist dated April 22 1957 to a Miss Madge Rogers mentioning the Gershwin brothers' 1924 musical Lady Be Good their song A Foggy Day and the new Audrey Hepburn film Funny Face featuring several Gershwin songs. Writing on his Beverly Hills letterhead Gershwin also mentions the ongoing renovation of his house there. 2pp. recto/verso. In fine condition and sold together with the original transmissal envelope.
Text in part: "Thank you for the photographs of your charming town; also for the interesting review of 'Lady Be Good.' I'd heard vaguely that a company had revived that show but have had no official confirmation. However when you tell me they've had difficulty finding a London theatre I imagine it wasn't too commercial a project and the show has probably closed by now - although I hope of course that it's still around somewhere. I'm surprised that 'A Foggy Day' is rarely if ever played - since you say you've never heard it. There have been many recordings. As for 'Funny Face': The film doesn't use the original story just as well but does include six of our songs. It received unanimously good notices in New York and is a big hit there. I imagine London will see it shortly and should you get to see it I'm sure you'll find it enjoyable." unknown
