Gli scritti qui raccolti appartengono ad anni lontani, e ne serbano il sapore: non per questo sono "superati". Talune prese di posizione hanno avuto conferma; e conservano una loro originalità e freschezza. Riscatta il primo Verdi in anni in cui ci voleva coraggio a farlo, e in un ambiente culturale in cui pregiudizi, luoghi comuni e remore aprioristiche antiverdiane erano di casa, non meno di quanto lo siano tuttora. Non si trincea dietro analisi sedicenti avalutative, ma sa cogliere il valore delle opere nella loro globalità. Non vede le acquisizioni dell'ultimo Verdi come una sorta di acquiescenza a modelli che gli sono estranei, a un "vero" dramma musicale, di cui Wagner sarebbe l'alfiere. Nutrì per la Callas un'autentica passione: in anni di contrapposizioni melodrammatiche tra "dive" seppe coglierne la statura interpretativa, la capacità di far scoprire mondi sottovalutati, quando non compromessi da interpretazioni fuorvianti, se non scadenti o volgari, comunque incapaci di cogliere la verità del teatro verdiano.‎
