Si tratta di costruire un modello teorico dell'universo che ne descriva le proprietà passate, presenti e future e che sia altresì compatibile con i dati della nostra esperienza terrestre. Non c'è da stupirsi che questo campo sia stato per secoli riservato alle esercitazioni teologiche. Gli inizi della cosmologia scientifica in effetti risalgono a non più di cinquant'anni fa e coincidono praticamente con i primi fondamentali lavori di Hubble sulle galassie. Da allora il quadro generale è profondamente mutato, ed è mutato il linguaggio dei cosmologi: "pulsar", "quasar", "stelle di neutroni", "buchi neri" solo in questi ultimi anni sono entrati a far parte del vocabolario scientifico. Quasi pressata dall'abbondanza di dati sperimentali, sempre più la cosmologia ricerca l'apporto chiarificatore di altre scienze, prima fra tutte la fisica relativistica, e al tempo stesso le mette in discussione e ne stimola la revisione critica. Si ha l'impressione, di fronte alla grande complessità strutturale dell'universo, che quasi più che al rigore sia necessario affidarsi alla fantasia e all'intuizione. Questo dato emerge con chiarezza dal dibattito che gli autori del presente volume, dieci tra i massimi esperti mondiali, hanno aperto sui principali problemi della moderna cosmologia. Hermann Bondi, attualmente consulente del Ministero della Difesa britannico, è famoso per i suoi fondamentali contributi all'astronomia e alla cosmologia. È autore di numerose pubblicazioni, alcune delle quali sono state tradotte in italiano: Teorie cosmologiche rivali (1965), La relatività e il senso comune (1965), Cosmologia (1970). John Peach è membro del Brasenose College di Oxford. Martin Ryle è direttore dell'Osservatorio radioastronomico Mullard di Cambridge. Premio Nobel per la fisica nel 1974. Donald Lynden-Bell è professore di astrofisica all'Università di Cambridge. Dennis Sciama, già professore di matematica al King's College di Londra, poi direttore generale dell'European Space Research Organisation e responsabile della ricerca scientifica al Ministero della Difesa britannico, è ora professore presso il Dipartimento di fisica dell'Università del Texas, Austin. Jayant Narlikar, già membro dell'Istituto di astronomia teorica a Cambridge, è professore di astrofisica al Tata Institute of Fundamental Research di Bombay. Insieme a Hoyle ha dato il suo nome a una nuova teoria relativistica. William McCrea è professore onorario di astronomia all'Università del Sussex. Roger Penrose è professore di matematica all'Università di Oxford. Martin Rees è professore di astronomia all'Università di Cambridge. This Exhibition Brought Him National Recognition And Success. In The Late 1930S Kingman Served As An Artist In The Works Progress Administration Painting Over 300 Works With The Relief Program. In 1942 And 1944 Kingman Received The Guggenheim Fellowship. During World War Ii He Was Drafted Into The U.S. Army But Was Transferred To Work As A Map Artist In The Office Of Strategic Services1 At Camp Beal California And Washington D.C By A Fan Of His Work Eleanor Roosevelt. Kingman Settled In Brooklyn New York After The War Where He Held A Position As An Art Instructor At Columbia University And Hunter College From 1946 For The Next Ten Years. In New York He Was Associated With Midtown Wildenstein And Hammer Galleries. During The 1950S Kingman Served As A United States Cultural Ambassador And International Lecturer For The Department Of State. In The 1950S And 1960S Kingman Worked As An Illustrator In The Film Industry Designing The Backgrounds For A Number Of Major Motion Pictures Including "55 Days At Peking" The Sand Pebbles And The Hollywood Adaptation Of "Flower Drum Song".
