Per rispondere a questo interrogativo dobbiamo partire dalla Terra, l'unico esempio di pianeta "vivente" che conosciamo, per capire come la vita, su di essa, abbia avuto inizio. Per fare ciò possiamo contare anche sull'astronomia, l'astrofisica e l'astronautica. L'ultimo passo, infine, ci conduce più lontano, a valutare la sterminata distesa delle stelle e delle galassie.
