‎Formale und transzendentale Logik. Versuch einer Kritik der logischen Vernunft. Sonderabdruck aus: ""Jahrbuch für Philosophie und phänomenologische Forschung"", Bd. X. Herausgegeben von E. Husserl, Freiburg I. Br. - [THE FINAL CONCEPTION OF LOGIC]‎

‎Halle, Niemeyer, 1929. 4to. A bit later blue full fabrikoid binding. Gilt lettering to spine. Clean and fresh copy. Old owner's signature to title-page. XI, (1), 298 pp.‎

‎First edition of Husserl's seminal work, which contains his philosophy of logic and mathematics. This important work entitled ""Formal and Transcendental Logic"" with the sub-title ""An Attempted Critique of the Logic Reason"" provides us with Husserl's final conception of logic. Though now famous as the father of phenomenology, Husserl was initially a student of mathematics, and in his two first works ""Über den Begriff der Zahl"" and ""Philosophie der Aritmetik"", his early philosophy is developed on the basis of mathematics with the aim to provide a sound foundation for mathematics by combining it with philosophy and psychology. His main work from 1900-1901, Logische Untersuchungen"", probably one of the two most important and influential philosophical works of the 20th century, Husserl establishes a philosophy that asks the question of the essence of the matter of perception as opposed to the form of perception, as well as the meaning of the difference between formal or pure and material laws, truths and determinations, -all based on his strong interest in the relationship between the formalities of arithmetic and of logic. However, it is in his ""Formal and Transcendental Logic"" that Husserl most thoroughly introduces us to the formal character of logic and formulates his final conception of it. According to Husserl, logic is formal, because it is nothing more than the development of pure reason, and pure reason is a formal concept. As such, logic for Husserl becomes the self-interpretation of pure reason (die Selbstauslegung der reinen Vernunft) which is, again, a formal activity. Husserl also determines that there are two formal ways of conceiving logic, one being a tool for judging sentences true or false, and another, which includes knowledge. And so, this work not only provides us with a genetic-phenomenological investigation of philosophy and of the basis of logic, but it also provides us with an insight into the entire inner systematic structure of late Husserlian thought.‎

‎First appearance of this collection of important papers which, amongst others, contains the questions to whether the involutes are algebraic.""Besides his two pedagogical works, it was through numerous memoirs (approximately 150, which have been collected) that Humbert held a major place in the mathematical discovery and production of his time. His writings were inspired by his interest in the study of algebraic curves and surfaces and were marked by the lucidity with which he related the problems biography in encountered in this area to questions of analysis and number theory. He thus enriched analysis and gave the complete solution of the two great questions of the transformation of hyperelliptic functions and of their complex multiplication. He also pointed out the resulting consequence: the existence of a group of transformations of certain surfaces into themselves constitutes an essential difference between the geometry of surfaces and that of curves. But, most important, he completed the work of Hermite by pursuing the applications to number theory throughout his life.""The present volume also contain contribution by Caspary and Hilbert.‎

‎Original scarce printing of the engineering manual to the IBM 75, 80 and 82 Card Sorting Machine. In the 40ties and 50ties a major time consuming activity was sorting of information represented by punched cards. IBM was the leading manufacturer of the card sorting machine and the company was founded by Herman Hollerith on the basis of his 1901 Hollerith Automatic Horizontal Sorter. The two main requirements of the Card Sorting Machine were lowering of error risk and sorting speed. Both features were continuously improved which resulted in a number of different issue of the engineering manual.""The three machines necessary to perform the basic operations required in punched card accounting are the punch, the sorter, and the accounting machine. The punch establishes the records, the sorter arranges or classifies them, and the accounting machine produces the printed reports."" (From the introduction to the present manual). The 1957-manual gives a fascinating insight into how a fully development card sorting machine is developed and how it functioned.OOC 694. ‎First printing of this important paper, bringing the problem with the Abelian integral to a solution. ""The further step was made by Jacobi in the short but very importent memoir ""Considerationes generales..."" (the paper offered): viz. he here shows for the hyper-elliptical integrals of any class (but the conclusion may be stated generally) that the direct functions to which Abel's theorem has reference are not functions of a single variable, such as the elliptic sn, cn, or dn, but functions of ""p"" variables...(Arthur Cayley in his ""Presidential Address to the British Association 1883).""Carl Jacobi in reviewing Adrien Legendre's third supplement to his ""Traite des fonctions elliptiques et des integrales Euleurienne"", suggests renaming Legendre's ""hyperelliptical transcendental functions"" as ""Abelian transcendental functions"" after Niels Henrik Abel. acobi, whiose work on hyperelliptic integrals helps lead to the extensive nineteenth-century development of the theory of abelian functions of n variables, suggests, in partial analogy to doubly periodic functions, that hyperelliptic integrals can be inverted to hyperelliptic functions through a generalization of elliptic theta functions."" ‎First appearance of an importent paper on the functions of a complex variable. In an importent paper of 1835 (the item offered) Jacobi showed that a single-valued function of a single variable which for every finite value of the argument has the character of a rational function (that is, is a meromorphic function) cannot have more than two periods, the ratio of the periodics is necessarily a nonreal number. This discovery opened up a new direction of work, namely, the problem of finding all double periodic functions."" (Morris Kline).‎

‎First appearance of Jacobi's very first paper on class number formula. The search for a class number formula probably began with Gauss, but the first formula in print was proposed by Jacobi (1832). He conjectured it on the evidence of some results of Cauchy in the theory of circle division, and his own brilliant extrapolation (or einduction"" as they called it then) from numerical results. Jacobi's formula was correct, but by no means proved by him. In a memorial speech for Jacobi, Dirichlet later said ""I believe it should be mentioned, regarding the previously unknown origin of this result, that Jacobi's communication is a noteworthyexample of shrewd induction, even though it is not possible to base a rigorous proof on circle division" it appears necessary to use essentially different principles, involving integral calculus and the theory of series, which were only later introduced into the subject.
