‎First edition. Euler shows that any discrete system obeys the Maupertois principle" from this result, he derives the general equation for the balance of moments in a plane elastica, which includes the general catenary as a special case. He also proves that Daniel Bernoulli's principle for the elastica that is free of distributed loads is also a special case of this general equation. - Enestrom No. 145.‎

‎First printing of one of Euler's papers in probabilistic analysis, dealing with an analysis of a lottery for which there are several classes and a guarateed payment. The Genoise lottery was the first number lottery. It and its variants were discussed by many mathematicians because such lotteries were perceived to be unfair and because they gave rise to many interesting problems. Usually it took the form of choosing 5 from 100 with various payoffs depending upon the wager made. - Enestroem E 412.‎

As the name implies he asks for the probability that various sequences of numbers to be drawn.""In the lottery here considered 90 tickets are numbered consecutevily from 1-90, and 5 tickets are drawn at random. The question may be asked, what is the chance that two or moree consecutive numbers should occur in drawing ? Such a result is called a sequence"" thus, for example, if the numbers drawn are 4,5,6,27,28, there is a sequence of three and also of two. Euler considers the question generally."" (Todhnuter).‎

The first paper concerns the Argument over the principle of least action, relating to the famous controversy - and one of the ugliest scientific controversies - between Koenig and Maupertuis. ""In 1751 a sensational new argument began when S. König published some critical remarks on Maupertuis’s principle of least action (1744) and cited a letter of Leibniz in which the principle was, in König’s opinion, formulated more precisely. Submitting to Maupertuis, the Berlin Academy rose to defend him and demanded that the original of Leibniz’ letter (a copy had been sent to König from Switzerland) be presented. When it became clear that the original could not be found, Euler published, with the approval of the Academy, ""Exposé concernant l’examen de la lettre de M. de Leibnitz"" (1752), where, among other things, he declared the letter a fake. The conflict grew critical when later in the same year Voltaire published his Diatribe du docteur Akakia, médecin du pape, defending König and making laughingstocks of both Maupertuis and Euler.""(DSB) - Enestrom No. 199.The second paper - Enestrom No. 200.‎

‎First appearance of Fatou's seminal Ph.D. thesis in which he presented his famous Fatou theorem, which state that a bounded analytic function in the unit disc has radial limits almost everywhere on the unit circle. This theorem was at the origin of a large body of research in 20th-century mathematics under the name of bounded analytic functions. Fatou set is the 'regular' appearance of the chaotic Julia set and both if these initiated what was to be known as ""complex dynamics"" which eventually resulted in the Mandelbrot set.Fatou's thesis also include the first application of the Lebesgue integral to concrete problems of analysis, mainly to the study of analytic and harmonic functions in the unit disc. He furthermore studied for the first time the Poisson integral of an arbitrary measure on the unit circle and also made a major contribution to finding a solution to the related question of whether conformal mapping of Jordan regions onto the open disc can be extended continuously to the boundary.""He contributed important results on the Taylor series, the theory of the Lebesgue integral, and the iteration of rational functions of a complex variable. When studying the circle of convergence of the Taylor series, several points of view are possible: (1) one can look for criteria of convergence or divergence of the series itself on the circumference" (2) one can consider the limit values of the circle of the analytic function represented by the series and try to determine where these limit values are finite or infinite, as well as the properties of the functions of the argument represented by the real and imaginary parts of the series when these functions are well defined" (3) one can consider what points on the circumference, singular in the Weierstrass sense, also determine the analytic extension of the series. The link between these problems led Fatou to formulate a fundamental theorem in the theory of the Lebesgue integral."" (DSB).‎

‎First printing of this important paper which coined the term ""cumulant"" within probability theory and statistics.Cumulants were first introduced by the Danish mathematician and statistician Thorvald N. Thiele in 1889. He, however, called them ""half-invariants"", a name that was not to be used for them in the future. It was not until the present work by the great statistical geneticist Ronald Fisher and the famous statistician John Wishart (eponym of the Wishart distribution) that these ""cumulants"" were given their name, the name that we still use today. According to the historian Stephen Stigler, the name ""cumulant"" was suggested to Fisher by Harold Hotelling. In another paper published in 1929, Fisher had called them cumulative moment functions. The present volume contains many other interesting and important mathematical papers, e.g. Carmichael's ""Expansions of Arithmetical Functions in Infinite Series"" (vol. 34), Mulholland's ""The Generalization of Certain Inequality Theorems Involving Powers."" (vol. 33), etc., etc.‎

‎First appearance of Fisher's paper on the analysis of variance.""Fisher devised his own extension of significance testing, the remarkable analysis of variance. This was bound in with his novel ideas on the wide subject of the theory of experimental design. He emphasized not merely the desirability but the logical necessity, in the design of an experiment whose results could not be freed from error, of maximizing efficiency (by devices such as blocks and confounding), and of introducing randomization in such a way as to furnish a valid estimate of the residual error. Whereas the time-honored practice in handling several factors had been to vary only one at a time during the experiment, Fisher pointed out that simultaneous variation was essential to the detection of possible interaction between factors, and that this change could be made without extra cost (in terms of experimental size and operational effort). Entrained with these innovations was the use of randomized blocks and Latin squares for the actual disposition of the test units."" (DSB)‎
