In the rear of the magazine flowered all the usual departments of a more conventional woman's publication . That this magazine would publish much fiction of interest seems improbable. But without effort it contrived to be superb. ILLUSTRATED DETECTIVE selected outstanding writers who had made their mark in the 1920s and mingled these with rising writers of the 1930s. Over the years the magazine would publish work by top names in the mystery field including Ellery Queen Stuart Palmer Sax Rohmer Arnold Kummer Hulbert Footner Vincent Starrett and H. Bedford-Jones. The fiction was polished often strongly compressed and good enough for a large amount of it to appear later between book covers. The magazine appeared monthly for almost six years sixty-nine issues at ten cents a copy. After three years the title was changed to THE MYSTERY MAGAZINE . Covers were tasteful bright and uneventful relying heavily on the faces of self-confident women. Inside was an astonishing amount of material: eight to ten pieces of fiction four or more crime-fact articles and up to ten continuing departments about half of these slanted directly toward women. When the magazine was at its peak in the early 1930s it offered material carefully calculated to appeal to most tastes and both sexes . MYSTERY was as meticulously planned as an orchestral score. Its careful variations played upon every shade of reader interest. It was consciously polished self-consciously feminine. A curious pared sound rang in its fiction as if the stories had been edited with a chain saw but the prose flashed with a bright nickel glitter. In questa nuova autorevole biografia di san Francesco (pubblicata negli USA dalla Cornell University Press, nel 2012), lo studioso domenicano Augustine Thompson è andato alla ricerca del cosiddetto Francesco della storia, al netto delle leggende agiografiche e delle interpretazioni teologiche o culturali. Sul modello della Jesus quest, anche questa Francis quest parte sfatando preliminarmente una serie di tipiche ricostruzioni della figura del Santo che lo arruolano in questa o quella temperie culturale o sociologica: dal Francesco ecologista, romantico, mistico della natura e degli animali, hippie, pacifista o femminista di tante rivisitazioni moderne (cattoliche o laiche) alle interpretazioni teologiche che si sono stratificate - nell'Ordine francescano e fuori - intorno alla biografia storica del Santo. Il proposito di Thompson è stato quello di scarnificare la tradizione delle fonti biografiche francescane per ritrovare il nucleo dei fatti che la critica storica più raffinata può ragionevolmente attribuire alla vita di san Francesco. Quella di Thompson è pertanto una biografia storica e filologica, che porta a compimento in maniera originale il programma iniziato e mai completato da Raoul Manselli con il suo noto San Francesco d'Assisi del 1982. L'opera non si rivolge esclusivamente agli storici, anzi. Si tratta di un'opera leggibile da chiunque abbia un interesse non superficiale alla figura di Francesco, che mette in luce anche la sua dimensione spirituale.

Si unisce il volume detto (Rizzoli, 1965), illustrato da Tofano, prima edizione. Buon esemplare con solo un poco di vecchia colla al dorso per precedente etichetta. Ma chi è Paolo Ristori? Secondo il settimanale della Cei, "Avvenire", Ristori è uno dei 34 preti scomparsi nella «seconda ondata Covid», 15 in una settimana, Paolo Ristori, 89 anni, per 22 segretario del cardinale Florit e poi a lungo preposto di Santa Maria del Fiore. Fiorentino doc, dal 1973 al 2009 era stato arciprete della Cattedrale incaricato di accogliere il Presidente della Repubblica Ciampi in quel Duomo che ha accolto il suo funerale celebrato dal Cardinale Betori, Paolo è scomparso il 21 novembre 2020. Vite donate non solo alla cura delle anime ma anche, come nel caso di Ristori, alla faticosa e dotta ricerca d'archivio e di traduzione dal latino medievale che poi il dotto prete sapeva trasformare in racconto delle vicende del Duomo e dei suoi aneddoti e della sua storia maggiore, attraverso una narrazione esatta e briosa, colta ma anche altamente divulgativa, sì da rendere piacevole la lettura di un libro di storia della "Chiesa Fiorentina e Clero della Cattedrale dalle origini al Giubileo del 1300": questo è il titolo dell'ultimo libro, qui recensito, che contiene le ultime, dotte ricerche archivistiche di Mons. Paolo Ristori, edito nel 2015 da Pagnini Editore, dove si vede che il nostro autore ha una cultura superiore che comunque non ti fa pesare mentre spiega vita, morte e miracoli di chi lo ha preceduto alla guida del Duomo di Firenze, quello del Cupolone, patria di tutti i Fiorentini in quanto chiesa vescovile voluta dal Comune, al di sopra delle famose contese fra quartieri che in tempi normali esplodono nel famoso "Calcio storico fiorentino".

Giovanni Battista Sidoti. Missionario e martire in Giappone
ill., br. Sulla base di numerose fonti inedite si presenta, in questo volume, l'avvincente biografia del Vicario Apostolico del Giappone Giovanni Battista Sidoti. Quasi sconosciuto in Italia, ma molto noto in Giappone dove i cattolici lo considerano un martire, Sidoti (Palermo, 22 agosto 1667-Tokyo, 27 novembre 1715) è l'ultimo missionario europeo dell'età moderna che riuscì a mettere piede in un paese allora chiuso al resto del mondo. Già prete, si trasferì a Roma dove si laureò in utroque jure per poi, spinto da zelo missionario, farsi inviare da Propaganda Fide nel paese del Sol Levante. Nel 1708 fu arrestato e trasferito prima a Nagasaki e poi a Tokyo, dove venne interrogato dal neoconfuciano Hakuseki Arai, consigliere dello shógun. Condannato al carcere a vita fu lasciato morire per aver battezzato i suoi due servitori. Le sue ossa sono state ritrovate a Tokyo nel 2014.

Carlo Maria Martini. Il profeta del dialogo
brossura Aveva 17 anni, in quel lontano 1944 di guerra, quando tutto solo nel giardino di casa diede fuoco ai diari a cui aveva affidato le confidenze più intime dell'adolescenza. Era il segno della volontà di lasciare tutto per consacrarsi anima e corpo alla Compagnia di Gesù, che lo avrebbe portato a diventare sacerdote, teologo e cardinale della più grande diocesi d'Europa. L'episodio giovanile è uno dei tanti poco noti della vita di Carlo Maria Martini raccontati dal vaticanista Andrea Tornielli, che in questo ritratto, mai agiografico, disegna la parabola umana, spirituale e istituzionale di una delle figure più carismatiche della Chiesa cattolica del post-Concilio. Cardinale dell'attenzione agli ultimi e dell'accoglienza agli immigrati, dell'ecumenismo e del confronto con le altre religioni, Martini fu anche uomo attento alle istituzioni e all'etica pubblica, capace di sferzare politici di destra e di sinistra e di denunciare con anni di anticipo il malcostume di Tangentopoli. Biblista di fama internazionale, non disdegnò di farsi attento indagatore di questioni complesse: dal fine vita alla fecondazione assistita, dal celibato dei sacerdoti all'accoglienza pastorale di divorziati e omosessuali, dalla scuola cattolica alla libertà di educazione. Indicato dalla stampa laica come "papabile", addusse come impedimento al soglio pontificio la malattia del Parkinson già in stadio avanzato, riaffermando il desiderio di dedicarsi alle sue passioni antiche: Gerusalemme e le Sacre Scritture.

L'Istituto Paolo VI di Brescia propone ai lettori una biografia di Paolo VI che ripercorre le tappe fondamentali della vicenda umana ed ecclesiale di Giovanni Battista Montini, a partire dalle origini familiari e dall'ambiente bresciano in cui aveva mosso i primi passi, attraverso il servizio in Segreteria di Stato e il ministero episcopale a Milano, fino al periodo del pontificato, il quale è stato indissolubilmente intrecciato con la prosecuzione del Vaticano II e con l'attuazione degli orientamenti maturati dall'assemblea conciliare. Il volume si basa sul lavoro di raccolta di documenti, di edizione di fonti, e sugli studi storici e teologici condotti nel corso degli anni dal centro di studi bresciano e, per la prima volta, può giovarsi della pubblicazione dello scambio epistolare che negli anni giovanili Giovanni Battista Montini ha intrattenuto con numerosissimi corrispondenti. Gli autori, infine, hanno potuto avvalersi delle testimonianze su Giovanni Battista Montini-Paolo VI raccolte in vista del processo di beatificazione.
