Per poter allargare il raggio della sua azione caritativa, nel 1425 fondò la congregazione delle Oblate Olivetane di S. Maria Nuova, dette anche Oblate di Tor de' Specchi. Tre anni dopo la morte del marito, emise ella stessa i voti nella congregazione da lei fondata, assumendo il secondo nome di Romana. Il libro è la sua biografia.

Itala Mela, insegnante di lettere, fece della scuola la sua missione, in parallelo all'attività nella Fuci (primi anni Venti del secolo scorso) fino a quando la malattia infranse il progetto di una monacazione in Belgio per partecipare poi a una fondazione benedettina in Italia che si ispirasse al rinnovamento liturgico che si stava diffondendo. A poco a poco si impose, per inabilità all'insegnamento, la rinuncia alla cattedra statale. In casa - coi genitori prima, poi il padre e la zia non credenti - visse i voti dell'oblazione benedettina secolare consacrata, forte della Regola di san Benedetto che le dava il perimetro esterno di un cammino imperniato su una vocazione unica, nitida fin dal 1930: «La volontà di Cristo, che io sento imperiosa nel profondo della mia anima, è di trascinarmi, d'immergermi con Se stesso negli abissi della Santissima Trinità». Dopo lo sfollamento sull'Appennino durante il secondo conflitto mondiale, Itala riuscì a dedicarsi - in obbedienza al vescovo di La Spezia, la sua città - all'animazione del mondo culturale e cattolico tra il 1946 e il 1953, presenziando o seguendo da lontano le iniziative che suscitava.

brossura Il volume racconta la storia di padre Armando Lavini, più conosciuto come padre Pietro l'eremita, che in mezzo secolo di lavoro, per lo più solitario, ha ricostruito il monastero di San Leonardo al Volubrio, sui monti Sibillini, fondato nell'XI secolo e ormai ridotto a rudere. Padre Pietro ha dichiarato di avere sentito questo compito come una missione divina: ha lavorato per decenni in un posto inaccessibile a mezzi meccanici, con la sola forza delle sue braccia, trasportando pietre e cemento con un asino e una carriola, prima di riuscire a dotarsi di un artigianale motocarro. Senza acqua né corrente elettrica, oltre a ricostruire l'edificio, padre Pietro ha fatto di San Leonardo un centro di spiritualità divenuto negli anni punto di riferimento religioso internazionale. Colpito da ictus sui monti e soccorso in eliambulanza nell'autunno del 2014, il cappuccino di Potenza Picena (Macerata) si è spento il 9 agosto 2015 a ottantotto anni. Una parte consistente del testo raccoglie - in forma di colloquio - le testimonianze di persone che hanno conosciuto padre Pietro e ne hanno sostenuto il progetto.

Al di là del contesto locale, la notorietà di don Giuseppe Chiot (1879-1960), parroco di San Luca (nel centro di Verona) dal 1914 al 1960, è legata al suo incontro con Galeazzo Ciano, nel momento tragico del processo di Verona e dell'esecuzione (1944). Ma la stessa pietà mostrata verso i potenti il sacerdote veronese l'aveva mostrata, durante tutta la sua vita, per gli emigrati, i soldati al fronte, i carcerati, per tutte le categorie "marginali". E con la stessa intensità egli visse la passione per l'arte contemporanea, per la letteratura, per la Nazione italiana, oltre che la sua missione di parroco.

Il suo comportamento e il suo modo d'intervenire nella storia sono innovativi, in quanto non ha esitato a uscire dalla sfera privata per invadere lo spazio pubblico e a rovesciare a proprio vantaggio il rapporto di dipendenza che normalmente le donne intrattenevano nei confronti degli uomini, dei potenti di questo mondo e dei dotti. Favorita da una crisi profonda delle istituzioni e dei poteri del suo tempo, la sua azione e quella di altre donne coeve ha inaugurato una nuova stagione nella storia dell'Occidente, aprendo la strada a un 'cattolicesimo al femminile'. Ma lei è l'unica il cui ricordo abbia attraversato i secoli e fino a oggi non abbia mai cessato di esercitare il suo influsso sulle menti.

br. Un "ritratto spirituale" può apparire eccessivo per un breve saggio che affronta un personaggio come Carlo Maria Martini di tale complessità e statura e di così alto profilo ecclesiale. Ma l'autore, avendo seguito fin dagli inizi il suo magistero ed essendo anche stato per anni in corrispondenza con lui, ha colto i tratti essenziali che definiscono la figura e l'impronta spirituale del vescovo che ha guidato la Chiesa di Milano. È stato amato e stimato da credenti e non, segnando una fase storica importante per tutta la Chiesa e la società civile.
