This major contribution and many others that Boltzmann made to the kinetic theory of gases were summarized in his masterpiece of theoretical physics 'Vorlesungen über Gastheorie'. brossura Per dar conto del significato del principio di indeterminazione si usa dire che «l'osservazione perturba il fenomeno». Nella sua icasticità la frase ci dice che di una particella elementare non possiamo sapere tante cose contemporaneamente e con grande precisione, ma dobbiamo scegliere: o la sua posizione nello spazio o la velocità, o la sua energia o il momento esatto in cui si trova. Queste grandezze si possono sì conoscere, ma non contemporaneamente. Proviamo allora a comprenderla meglio, aiutati da una guida d'eccezione, la formula elaborata da Heisenberg nel 1927: un insieme di pochi simboli, una grande rivoluzione della fisica quantistica, i cui risultati - dai transistor al laser - ci circondano quotidianamente.
