Poi si parte: tappa dopo tappa, sull'imperscrutabile Luna, tra le stelle che illuminano i nostri sogni, a due passi dal Sole, sulla soglia perigliosa di un buco nero, oltre i confini del Sistema Solare, ai margini impossibili dell'universo. Per fare infine ritorno sulla Terra quarantasette anni dopo, quando però, sul nostro pianeta, saranno trascorsi ben ventimila secoli. Cosa troveremo? Sarà la fine? Dietro ogni nuova misurazione si cela una possibile scoperta e, dietro ancora, un nuovo modo di interpretare la realtà e di viverla. Antonio Ereditato - fisico delle particelle elementari fra i più autorevoli - racconta l'affascinante cammino che ci ha portato dapprima a ipotizzare, quindi a scoprire e infine a interrogare quella vertiginosa trama di molecole, atomi, elettroni, fotoni e quark che costituisce il tessuto ultimo delle cose. Questo viaggio intorno all'infinitamente piccolo è fatto di azzardi, smentite e conferme : da Democrito a Dalton, da Newton ad Einstein, da Thomson a Rutherford, passando per Bohr, Fermi e Pontecorvo, segue le particelle attraverso i primi strumenti rivelatori in grado di individuarne la presenza lungo sottili tracce d'argento, all'interno dei calorimetri che ne misurano l'energia, nelle camere a bolle che ne fotografano le scie affilate, fino al Large Hadron Gollider, l'enorme acceleratore del cern in cui osserviamo le particelle scontrarsi a una velocità vicinissima a quella della luce. Molti i territori attraversati: la meccanica e l'elettrodinamica quantistica, la teoria dei quark, l'antimateria; molte le scoperte, come quelle recentissime del bosone di Higgs, delle oscillazioni di neutrino e delle onde gravitazionali; molte le ipotesi di lavoro aperte, nel solco delle evi-» denze sperimentali ottenute e alla luce di quelle ancora solo immaginabili. La meta? Oggi come allora: trovare la forza che origina e tiene insieme il Tutto. Le particelle elementari non è solo una guida al mondo invisibile: è la testimonianza di uno scienziato che ha consacrato la vita alla ricerca e ne ripercorre le tappe salienti, in un intreccio indissolubile tra le aspirazioni personali e le grandi sfide che la scienza oggi si appresta a fronteggiare. Del resto, macrocosmo e microcosmo coincidono nel mondo delle Particelle elementari. Un mondo che reclama naviganti curiosi, pronti a cogliere il minimo segnale all'orizzonte, perché, come sa ogni marinaio di vedetta, è proprio nell'impalpabile barlume che vacilla in lontananza la promessa della terraferma.

Un breve viaggio chiamato Terra. Come è iniziata la nostra vita e in quali modi potrà finire
br. La Terra è un minuscolo grumo di materia che si è generato nell'immensità dell'universo quasi 5 miliardi di anni fa. Da allora vaga per lo spazio-tempo, e da un po' porta con sé un prezioso carico di vita, intelligenza e coscienza. Ma lei e il suo carico sono costantemente minacciati da esplosioni di supernove, impatti con grandi asteroidi, glaciazioni, eruzioni di supervulcani, megaterremoti e fiotti di raggi gamma. E di recente ci si sono messe anche bombe atomiche, crisi climatiche, pandemie e tante altre belle invenzioni dell'abitante principe del pianeta: l'umanità. Qual è il suo (e nostro) destino? "Un breve viaggio chiamato Terra" ci accompagna da quel grande avvenimento, verificatosi solo per caso, chiamato Big Bang alla formazione di un piccolo pianeta che ruota attorno a una stella insignificante di una galassia di media grandezza, dalla scintilla della vita alla nascita di Homo sapiens, dalla rivoluzione scientifica che gli ha fatto credere di poter dominare il mondo alla sua futura sparizione dalla scena dell'esistenza. Le probabilità della nostra estinzione sono alte ma, forse, potremo ritardare quel momento, almeno fino al giorno in cui la nostra casa verrà inghiottita da un buco nero o bruciata dal Sole morente. Eppure anche allora potrebbe non essere davvero la fine... Dopo averci fatto danzare al ritmo del respiro del cosmo, Antonio Ereditato ci guida all'esplorazione del nostro limite ultimo, suggerendoci di prenderci cura del nostro pianeta e indicandoci la via per farlo, ma soprattutto invitandoci a non avere paura. In fondo, basta solo intendersi su che cosa significhi davvero la parola «fine».
