Publisher's blue cloth uncommon variant with lettering stamped in dark blue on the upper cover & spine - the lettering sharp but the spine blue cloth faded as usual. In a very good unrestored original publisher's dustwrapper black type on a turquoise ground showing moderate use with narrow chips to the spine crown heel & tips one small chip on the back panel. Contains two small diagrams on pages 49 & 51. In a fine custom slipcase with E=MC2 in relief on the side. Very nice indeed. Contains two lectures: "Ether and the Theory of Relativity" delivered on May 5th 1920 in the University of Leyden. "Geometry and Experience" an expanded form of an Address given to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin on January 27th 1921. Translated by G.B. Jeffery & W. Perrett. 1932. Signed by Einstein for a fellow advocate of a universal language Original photographic print 121 x 70 mm; image size 75 x 55 mm. Stock number printed on verso "1016". Signed by Einstein in ink below the image "Albert Einstein 1932". The photograph showing Einstein in a pale pinstriped suit wing collar and plain necktie was taken at a press conference on the occasion of Einstein's first visit to Caltech in Pasadena on 2 January 1931. Einstein wintered at Caltech in 1931 1932 and 1933. Provenance: from the collection of Leonard Nowell Mansell Newell pseud. Eleno Vinfero 1902-1968. Newell was an English Esperantist teaching the language and editing various periodicals. He also wrote poetry strongly influenced by the Budapest School of writers. He spent the second half of his life in Australia. It is not recorded how Newell obtained the signed photo but it may be significant that in late July 1932 the year of the inscription Newell was secretary general of the 24th World Esperanto Congress in Paris. Einstein an ardent anti-nationalist and supporter of international co-operation took a favourable view of Esperanto the auxiliary language created in the 1870s and 1880s by L. L. Zamenhof a Jew from Bialystok whose linguistic invention was viewed with great suspicion by Hitler and the Nazis. "For international communication use of an international language is not only necessary" Einstein wrote "it is the obvious solution. Esperanto is the best solution for an international language." On 30 July 1932 Einstein was back in Germany in Caputh near Potsdam beginning at the suggestion of the League of Nations and its International Institute of Intellectual Co-operation at Paris his correspondence with Sigmund Freud published later that year as Why War 1932. unknown

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of one of Einstein's major papers on the modification of general relativity and the beginning of his unified field theory. "As so often the case in relativity the story of quantum gravity begins with Einstein himself. Soon after the final formulation of general relativity he pointed out the need for a quantum modification of the theory. In "Do Gravitational Fields Play an Essential Role in the Structure of the Elementary Particles of Matter" he began to speculate whether gravitation plays a role in the atomistic structure of matter: There are reasons for thinking that the elementary formations which go to make up the atom are held together by gravitational forces. The above reflections show the possibility of a theoretical construction of matter out of the gravitational field and the electromagnetic field alone. "In order to construct such a model of an 'elementary particle' Einstein shows that it is necessary to modify the original gravitational field equations. The major interest of this paper is that his attention now shifted from possible quantum modifications of general relativity to the search for a unified theory of the electromagnetic and gravitational fields on the basis of which he hoped to explain the structure of matter. Quantum effects are to be derived from such a theory rather than postulated ad hoc. Einstein remained committed to this approach for the rest of his life: the search for a 'natural' mathematical extension of the general theory in the hope that such a theory would somehow explain the quantization of matter and energy" Iyer and Bhawal Black Holes Gravitational Radiation and the Universe.
