The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein: Volume 8: The Berlin Years: Correspondence 1914-1918
Princeton N.J.: Princeton University Press 1998. This volume opens in spring 1914 when Einstein takes up a research professorship at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin and closes with the collapse of the German Empire four and one-half years later. A good portion of the documentation which comprises more than 675 letters has only recently been discovered by the editors. The letters touch on all aspects of Einstein's activities and shed new light on his inner life including the breakup of Einstein's first marriage and the divorce are presented here for the first time in all their complexity. New material shows Einstein maintaining a strong sense of moral urgency throughout the war. The scientific correspondence documents Einstein's struggle to find satisfactory field equations for his new gravitational theory--the general theory of relativity--and his continued discussion with leading physicists and mathematicians about the implications and further development of the theory. 714 pgs. Illustrated. Minimal shelfwear. First Edition. Soft Cover. Fine. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Princeton University Press Paperback

Simon & Schuster 1938. 5th Printing. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 1938 fifth printing. No jacket. Light stain on page ridge rear hinge starting ink underlining and marginalia in first chapter notes laid in. x 319 pp. "The Evolution of Physics: The Growth of Ideas from Early Concepts to Relativity and Quanta is a science book for the lay reader by the physicists Albert Einstein and Leopold Infeld tracing the development of ideas in physics. It was originally published in 1938 by Cambridge University Press. It was a popular success1 and was featured in a Time cover story. Einstein agreed to write the book partly as a way to help Infeld financially.2 Infeld collaborated briefly in Cambridge with Max Born before moving to Princeton where he worked with Einstein at the Institute for Advanced Study. Einstein tried to get Infeld a permanent position there but failed.3 Infeld came up with a plan to write a history of physics with Einstein which was sure to be successful and split the royalties. When he went to Einstein to pitch the idea Infeld became incredibly tongue-tied but he was finally able to stammer out his proposal. Simon & Schuster hardcover

The Evolution of Physics - The Growth of Ideas from the Early Concepts to Relativity and Quanta - part of the Cambridge Library of Modern Science General Editor: C P Snow
Cambridge University Press 1938. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 1938. First UK Edition in Second Issue Binding bound in "limp" boards with no front end-paper as published in this Issue and stamped in SILVER rather than Gold. Published blue limp boards stamped in silver to the front board and spine. 3 plates and numerous black & white illustrations in the text. D/W is price-clipped with a touch of edge wear and minor stain marks to spine and rear and with the yellow portion of the spine darkened. Clean content throughout with no end-paper at the front but this the Second Issue binding was made that way. Following its publication as a hardback first edition in 1938 un-sold stock was reduced in price during WW2 price-clipped by the publisher and re-issued in a limp blue binding without a front free end-paper and stamped in silver rather than gold. The Second Issue of this title turns up occasionally but seldom in D/W in this condition. Photographs/scans available upon request. Cambridge University Press hardcover

First UK Edition in First Issue Binding bound in firm hardback as opposed to "limp" boards and with end-papers present at both the front and the rear of the book and stamped in GOLD not silver. Published blue hardback boards stamped in gold to the front board and spine. 3 plates and numerous black & white illustrations in the text. A Swedish bookseller's ticket to the front paste-down and a contemporary gift inscription in Swedish on the front free end-paper otherwise a lovely bright and clean fine copy with the gilt un-faded in a very fine D/W priced 8s 6d net to the inside flap which accords with the English Catalogue of Books entry for March 1938. A couple of bibliographical points: Firstly other listers of this title on the www have put forward the view that this book was not published with a front end-paper. I can confirm that the true first edition which this is was published with two end-papers at the front of the book and one at the rear. All the other wrappered copies on the www have price-clipped dust wrappers. The True first edition first issue is priced 8/6 net to the inside flap and is NOT price-clipped. It is my belief that following its publication as a first edition in 1938 un-sold stock was reduced in price during WW2 price-clipped by the publisher and re-issued without a front free end-paper in a limp binding and stamped in silver to differentiate them from the first issues which were stamped in gold. Photographs/scans available upon request. Cambridge University Press hardcover
