Einstein Albert Hermann Weyl
Raum-Zeit-Materie. Vorlesungen uber Allgemeine Relativitatstheorie in Die Naturwissenschaften Heft 25 Berlin: Julius Springer 21 Juni June 1918 p. 373 SINGLE ISSUE IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS: EINSTEIN'S REVIEW OF WEYL'S SEMINAL RAUM-ZEIT-MATERIE
FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF EINSTEIN'S REVIEW OF WEYL'S SEMINAL WORK RAUM-ZEIT-MATERIE SPACE-TIME-MATTERS -- WEYL'S STUDY OF THE THEORY OF RELATIVITY written after spending a year with Einstein as the latter was working out the details of his theory. Weyl's work is still considered "the standard treatise on the general theory of relativity" Nature. In the very favorable review offered here Einstein writes "every page shows the amazingly steady hand of the master who has penetrated the subject matter from the most diverse angles. Weyl understood how to combine mathematical rigor with graphic intuition" Einstein 373. Weyl's work includes "an exposition and examination of Einstein's general theory of relativity and the concomitant theory of gravitation. A detailed investigation follows devoted to gravitational waves a rigorous solution of the problem of one body laws of conservation and the energy of gravitation" Stanford Dictionary of Philosophy. The Dictionary of Scientific Biography notes that Weyl's work played "an important role in the development of mathematical physics" DSB XIV p. 281. "Whatever the future may bring Professor Weyl's book will remain a classic of physics" British Journal for Philosophy and Science". Hermann Klaus Hugo Weyl 1885-1955 was a German mathematician theoretical physicist and philosopher. "His work had a vast range encompassing analysis algebra number theory topology differential geometry spacetime theory quantum mechanics and the foundations of mathematics" Stanford. In 1913 Weyl took a teaching post at the ETH Zurich where he was a colleague of Einstein's just as the latter was working out the details of the theory of general relativity. In 1914 Einstein left Zrich and the theoretical physics program at the ETH. The program was much weakened in his absence and Weyl "needed no external prompting to work in and to teach theoretical physics: his interest in the subject in general and above all in the theory of relativity gave him more than sufficient motivation in that regard. Weyl decided to lecture on the general theory of relativity in the summer semester of 1917 and these lectures became the basis of his famous book Raum-Zeit-Materie of 1918" - the one Einstein here reviews ibid. NOTE: We separately offer two other works by Weyl The Mathematical Way of Thinking and his 1923 paper Zur Allegemeinen Relativatstheorie. We also offer many works by Einstein. CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Julius Springer. Complete. 4to. 10.5 x 7.5 inches; 262 x 187mm. 3 plates and in-text illustrations. Name "Fitch" in light pencil. Very minor old crease in front wrap long flattened. Very good condition. Raum-Zeit-Materie. Vorlesungen ber Allgemeine Reltivitatstheorie in Die Naturwissenschaften. Julius Springer unknown

FIRST EDITION FULL VOLUME OF THE FRANCK-HERTZ EXPERIMENT: THE FIRST ELECTRICAL MEASUREMENT TO CLEARLY SHOW THE QUANTUM NATURE OF ATOMS - PROOF OF THE QUANTIZED MODEL OF THE BOHR ATOM & OF PLANCK'S QUANTUM THEORY. Note that this volume includes both the first and second Franck-Hertz experiment. In the first they demonstrate that atoms can only absorb and be excited by specific amounts of energy; in the second experiment performed the same year they demonstrate that the frequency of the light emitted following the collision of electrons with mercury atoms corresponds precisely with the energy lost by the electrons in the collision. Franck and Hertz received the Nobel Prize for this work specifically "for their discovery of the laws governing the impact of an electron upon an atom" Nobel Prize Committee. Of equal import this volume also contains a paper by Einstein in which he uses the light quantum hypothesis to give new derivations of Planck's radiation law and Nernst's third law of thermodynamics. His "proofs introduced the quantum hypothesis" Calaprice The Einstein Almanac 40. In 1914 James Franck and Gustav Hertz were working together in the Physics Institute of Berlin and were "particularly interested in ionization i.e. in the process in which an electron is removed from an atom" The Harvest of a Century" p. 102-103. The experiment they devised now known commonly as the Franck-Hertz experiment is "a vivid illustration of the quantization of energy" that relied on methodology so simple "that it is now carried out regularly by undergraduates. They accelerated electrons through a low-pressure gas of mercury. When the electrons' energy reach the energy of a stationary state of mercury they gave up a quantum of energy to the mercury resulting in a stepwise shape to the curve of current through the apparatus. This demonstrated that atoms could absorb energy only in discrete amounts" Peacock The Quantum Revolution 40. "Franck and Hertz had not only shown for the first time that electrons lose their kinetic energy to mercury atoms in energy quanta but also that these energy quanta are equal to the energy of the light emitted by the same atoms if interpreted with Einstein's light-quantum hypothesis. This was the first experimental determination of Planck's constant not using blackbody radiation" Brandt 103. CONDITION & DETAILS: Braunschweig: Friedr. Vieweg & Sohn. 8vo. Unobtrusive stamp on front paste down and title page. In-text figures throughout. Tightly bound in leather over marbled paper boards; gilt-lettered and tooled at the slightly faded and spotted spine which looks worse in the image due to the bright light than it does to the eye. FIRST EDITION FULL BOUND VOLUME OF THE EINSTEIN-DE HAAS EFFECT -- an experimental observation that illustrates the relationship between magnetism and angular momentum and in which a change in the magnetic moment causes the rotation of a free body. In this 1915 paper Albert Einstein and Wander de Haas report that changing the magnetization of a suspended iron rod by applying an external magnetic field leads to mechanical rotation of the rod - a result that still stands as a textbook illustration of the relationship between magnetism and angular momentum. Papers by Planck The Quantum Hypothesis for Molecules with Multiple Degrees of Freedom von Laue Warburg Siegbahn and Born are also present. Einstein had long contemplated Ampre's 1820 conjecture that magnetism is caused by the microscopic circular motions of electric charges. In light of this Einstein and de Haas devised an experiment to test not just Ampre's hypothesis but also "Lorentz's theory that the rotating particles are electrons. The aim of the experiment was to measure the torque generated by a reversal of the magnetization of an iron cylinder" Calaprice Einstein Almanac 52. In the experiment Einstein and de Haas designed "a magnetic material was suspended with the aid of a thin string inside a magnetic field coil. When the magnetic field was increased by the application of an electric current through the field coil the magnetic material is magnetized. In order to keep the total magnetic moment of the magnetic material constant the latter rotates. This classical Einstein-de Haas effect demonstrates that the spin angular momentum is of the same nature as the angular momentum of rotating bodies as conceived in classical mechanics" Ganzhorn Nature Communications 7 11443 2016. Einstein spoke enthusiastically of the experimental results he and de Haas has achieved stating that they had "given firm proof of the existence of Ampre's molecular currents" Pais Subtle is the Lord 245. ALSO INCLUDED: Papers by Planck "Die Quantenhypotese fr Molekeln mit mehreren Freiheitsgraden" and "Bemerkung ber die Entropiekonstante zweiatomiger Gase" as well as a paper by von Laue "Die Einsteinischen Energieschwankungen" CONDITION & DETAILS: Braunschweig: Friedr. Vieweg & Sohn. 8vo. Unobtrusive stamp on front paste down and title page. In-text figures throughout. Tightly bound in leather over marbled paper boards; gilt-lettered and tooled at the slightly faded spine. Unusually beautiful marbled paper edges. Bright and very clean throughout. Near fine. Friedr. FIRST EDITION OFFPRINT IN FINE CONDITION OF EINSTEIN'S TWO-PART 1927 COMMENTARY ON KALUZA'S THEORY INVOLVING FIELD EQUATIONS IN FIVE-DIMENSIONAL SPACE. Weil 156. Boni 170. Theodor Franz Eduard Kaluza "attempted to unify Einstein's theory of gravity with Maxwell's theory of light by mixing them in a fifth dimension" Calaprice Einstein Almanac 135. Kaluza was able to solve "Einstein's equations for general relativity using five dimensions and - once again - Maxwell's equations for electromagnetism emerged" History of Physics: The Wenner Collection. Kaluza worked with Oskar Benjamin Klein who had "independently developed a five-dimensional theory similar to Kaluza's but in more detail and with the calculation that the fourth spatial dimension is so small 10 30 cm that it could not be detected. Klein's idea of a small extra dimension was subsequently picked up by string theory and M-theory" ibid. Together Kaluza and Klein produced the Kaluza-Klein field equations" Calaprice Einstein Almanac 135. Their insights however were "neglected for many years as attention was directed towards quantum mechanics. Their idea that fundamental forces can be explained by additional dimensions did not re-emerge until string theory was developed" Wikipedia. Eine Theorie der Grundlagen der Thermodynamik A Theory of the Foundations of Thermodynamics in Annalen der Physik 11 pp. 170-187 1903 FULL VOLUME: EINSTEIN'S DERIVATION OF ENTROPY FROM THERMODYNAMIC PRINCIPLES
Bound full volume FIRST EDITION OF EINSTEIN'S DERIVATION OF ENTROPY FROM THERMODYNAMIC PRINCIPLES. "Einstein showed that the concepts of temperature and entropy follow from the assumption of the energy principle and atomic theory. He required only the foundations of atomic physics but no other physical hypotheses" Calaprice The Einstein Almanac 4. Weil No. 4. Boni 4. We also offer this paper in it's original wrappers. In a series of three papers published between 1902 and 1904 Einstein explores "the derivation of the properties of thermal equilibrium on the basis of the mechanical equations of motion and of the calculus of probabilities. focusing specifically on fluctuations of the energy as a possible tool for establishing the validity of this foundation" Peliti & Rechtman Einstein's Approach to Statistical Mechanics. In his 1902 paper Einstein writes "in his introduction that nobody has yet succeeded in deriving the conditions of thermal equilibrium and of the second law of thermodynamics from probability considerations although Maxwell and Boltzmann came near to it. Willard Gibbs is not mentioned. In fact Einstein's paper was written in ignorance of Gibbs paper published 1901. In the present paper Einstein builds the theory on another basis not used by Gibbs namely on the consideration of a single system in course of time later called "Zeit-Gesamtheit" time assembly and proves that this is equivalent to a certain virtual assembly of many systems Gibb's micro-canonical assembly. Einstein at once proceeded to apply his theorems to a case of utmost importance namely to systems of a size suited for demonstrating the reality of molecules and the correctness of the kinetic theory of matter."Walter Alicke. In the paper offered the second of the three and entitled in English "A Theory of the Foundations of Thermodynamics" "Einstein asks whether kinetic theory is essential for the derivation of the postulates of thermal equilibrium and of the entropy concept or whether "assumptions of a more general nature" could be sufficient" ibid. In other words Einstein as noted earlier wanted to know if thermodynamic laws could be obtained using a minimum amount of elementary assumptions. And Einstein was able to do just that to derive entropy in such a way that it did not require any particular set of time evolution equations to remain valid; to "connect the entropy of a system at thermal equilibrium with the corresponding phase space quantities" Norton Einstein's Miraculous Argument of 1905. He argues: "It is sufficient that such a set of equations respects a more general property namely that a suitably defined 'incompressibility' in the phase space of an aggregate of molecules be preserved in the time evolution. The usual decomposition of energy into kinetic and potential is not required either" Navarro Gibbs Einstein and the Foundations of Statistical Mechanics. "In the closing section of this paper Einstein applies these results to a simple description of a thermal engine connected in turn to several heat reservoirs to derive the second principle in the form of Clausius" Peliti & Rechtman.
