‎Geometrie und Erfahrung pp. 123-131 WITH ber eine naheliegende Ergnzung des Fundamentes der allgemeinen Relativittstheorie pp. 261-264 WITH ber ein den Elementarproze der Lichtemission betreffendes Experiment pp. 882-883 in Sitzungsberichte der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaft January to December 1921‎

‎FULL BOUND VOLUME OF 1921 Sitzungsberichte der preuss. Akademie der Wissenschaften INCLUDING FIRST EDITIONS OF THREE EINSTEIN PAPERS Weil #'s 114 116 118. In the same year in which he won the Nobel Prize 1921 Einstein delivered the first paper as a lecture at "a commemorative session of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in honor of Frederick the Great" Calaprice Einstein Almanac 65. In "Geometrie und Erfahrung" Geometry and Experience Einstein advances his theory that space conforms to non-Euclidean principles of geometry -- a corollary of the Theory of Relativity -- and generally sums up his views on the "geometrization of physics and relativity and the relation of mathematics to the external world" Dictionary of Scientific Biography 4 330. It is in this lecture that Einstein also provides his famous answer to the puzzling question of why mathematics should be so well adapted to describing the external world: "Insofar as the laws of mathematics refer to the external world they are not certain; and insofar as they are certain they do not refer to reality" ibid. Calaprice put it like this: "He questioned whether human reasoning even without direct experience could lead to an understanding of the properties of real things merely through thought" Calaprice 1921. This lecture was delivered in the same year that Einstein received his Nobel Prize in Physics. ALSO INCLUDED is "ber eine naheliegende Ergnzung des Fundamentes der allgemeinen Relativittstheorie" On a Natural Addition to the Foundation of the General Theory of Relativity. In this paper Einstein presents his argument that "Weyl's geometry conflicts with experience" Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. In 1918 Hermann Weyl suggested a reduction of all physics to a single unified field theory. He developed his original scale geometry a 'purely infinitesimal geometry' that Einstein among others including Pauli argued "took advantage of the fact that the underlying dynamical laws of matter which govern clocks and rigid rods" ibid. Einstein loved the sheer elegance and beauty of Weyl's geometry but on purely physical grounds it was unacceptable. In this paper Einstein attempts "a generalization of Weyl's geometry that while preserving all the advantages of the mathematical scheme would eliminate from the theory the defects associated with the physical interpretation of the foundations of the theory" Vizgin Unified Field Theories 172. ALSO INCLUDED is "ber ein den Elementarproze der Lichtemission betreffendes Experiment" On an Experiment Concerning the Elementary Process of Light Emission. In this paper Einstein addresses the fundamental question of whether the radiation emitted by an atom spreads in the form of spherical waves or as 'needle radiation' only in one direction. ‎BOUND FIRST EDITION OF EINSTEIN'S 1924 PAPER ON THE PHYSICS OF RADIOMETERS; EINSTEIN'S TRANSLATION OF BOSE'S SECOND PAPER ON THE BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE WITH UNTITLED ADDENDUM BY EINSTEIN; & WENTZEL'S SECOND PROPHETIC PAPER ANTICIPATING FEYNMAN'S PATH INTEGRAL APPROACH TO QUANTUM MECHANICS. This volume bears the ownership stamp of Friedrich Hermann Hund a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. The Einstein authored paper Zur Theorie der Radiometerkrfte On the Theory of Radiometric Forces presents Einstein's theory on the cause of radiometric forces the physics of radiometers. His paper finds that radiometric forces act also on surfaces normal to the temperature gradient in other words also on horizontal surfaces. Weil 139 143a. ALSO INCLUDED: "Zur Quantentheorie des Rntgenbremsspektr ums" by Gregor Wentzel. "Unbeknownst to Feynmann Wiener or Dirac Wentzel had anticipated several of the most important features of the path integral formulation in two 1924 papers resolving differences between classical wave interference and the quantum nature of spectral lines. Published even before Heisenberg's quantum mechanics formulation these papers included concepts such as the interpretation of a virtual path as a phase the interference of phase paths and the interpretation of the magnitude of the interference as a transition probability" History of Science: The Wenner Collection 372. Wentzel's vision was not vague and he provides "a precise mathematical structure that closely matches Feynman's later findings" Antoci Wentzel's Path Integrals 1. ALSO INCLUDED: "Wrmegleichgewicht im Strahlungsfeld bei Anwesenheit von Materie" is Einstein's translation of Bose's second paper on the Bose-Einstein Condensate. Bose's first paper "Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese" was a seminal paper in the history of quantum mechanics and one which Einstein also translated for Bose. Planck's Law and Light Quantum Hypothesis represented the "discovery of new statistical counting rules for light quanta and a new derivation of Planck's radiation law. This second Bose paper specifically addresses the emission/absorption of electromagnetic radiation by matter. Einstein added an untitled addendum that he did not yet completely agree with the author's findings. CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Vieweg und Springer. Large 8vo. 9 x 6 inches; 225 x 150mm. Collectors prize offprints because they are separately printed by journals and frequently issued in small quantities intended only for the author's use and distribution to colleagues. "After 1917 Einstein firmly believed that light-quanta were here to stay thus it is not surprising that he would look for new ways in which the existence of photons might lead to observable deviation from the classical picture. In this he did not succeed. At one point in 1921 he thought he had found a new quantum criterion but it soon turned out to be a false lead as demonstrated in this paper" Schilpp-Shields 162. That paper - the one offered here - is Einstein's evidence that his 1921 efforts were incorrect. In this paper Einstein introduces a calculation on the topic and explains why his earlier proposed experiment of his had not been well considered because it could not predict a good choice between two theoretical alternatives" Calaprice Einstein Encyclopedia 98. ‎Einstein Albert; Ernst G. Straus AND Chandrasekhar S.‎

‎Corrections and Additional Remarks to Our Paper Einstein & Strauss WITH On a New Theory of Weizscker on the Origin of the Solar System in Reviews of Modern Physics 18 January 1946 pp. 148-149; pp. 94-103‎

‎FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF SIGNIFICANT CORRECTIONS & ADDITIONS BY EINSTEIN & STRAUS TO AN IMPORTANT PAPER; AS WELL A PAPER BY CHANDRASEKHAR ON THE ORIGIN OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM. In 1945 Albert Einstein and Ernst G. Straus introduced their Swiss cheese model of the universe in a paper entitled "The Influence of the Expansion of Space on the Gravitation Fields Surrounding the Individual Stars". Weil 216. The following year they published "Corrections and Additional Remarks to Our Paper" the 1945 paper the paper offered here. In early 1945 Einstein returned to long held cosmological questions as he sought to try to understand whether the expansion of the universe caused the solar system to expand as well - or more specifically the influence of the expansion of space on the gravitational field in the neighborhood of a star. Working with Straus the two began studying the effect of inhomogeneities in an expanding model. "By the spring of 1945 Einstein and Straus had found a new type of possible universe using Einstein's equations. It described a universe which looked largely like one of the simple expanding universes of Friedmann and Lematre containing material like galaxies which exerted no pressure. But it has spherical regions removed from it like bubbles in a Swiss cheese. Each empty hole then had a mass placed at its centre. The mass was equal in magnitude to what had been excavated to create the hole. This was a step towards a more realistic universe in which the matter was not smoothly spread with the same density everywhere but gathered up into lumps like galaxies which were spread about in empty space. Barrow The Book of Universes 106-107. ALSO INCLUDED: S. Chandrasekhar's "On a New Theory of Weizscker on the Origin of the Solar System". In 1945 C. F. v. Weizscker proposed a new theory of the origin of the solar system which appeared to merit consideration. Weizscker argued "that there would be turbulence in the solar nebula which would give rise to the formation of eddies having angular motion opposite to that of the rotation of the nebula" Abhyankar The Origin BASI 26 339. Weizscker's "principal idea was to regard the formation of a planetary system around a star as a possible last stage in the formation of the star itself" Chandrasekhar 1946 94. He believed that "the protoplanets were supposed to have formed at the sites of the ball bearing eddies and the merger of the protoplanets in the same orbit produced the known planets" Abhyankar 343. In the paper offered here the Indian American astrophysicist S. Chandrasekhar challenged Weizscker's theory and showed "that there will be a wide spectrum of turbulence with smaller eddies within the larger ones and there would be no regular pattern as suggested by Weizscker. Further the life time of the eddies will be too short for the formation of the planets" ibid. In other words Chandrasekhar's work "indicated that the regular pattern of vortices originally postulated by Weizscker could not occur but instead must be replaced by a range of eddy sizes" Brush A History of Modern Planetary Physics 14. Chandrasekhar's work led to the abandonment of Weizscker's theories. INCLUDED: Nobel Prize winner Percy Williams Bridgman's "Recent Work in the Field of High Pressures" pp. 1-94 an important review of work done in the field of high pressure physics between Bridgman's seminal 1930 work and 1946 the year he won the prize and R. Samuel's "The Dissociation Spectra of Covalent Polyatomic Molecules" pp. 103-148. CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Physical Society. Complete issue in original wraps. 4to. 10.5 x 8 inches; 263 x 200mm. Very slight wear at the edges of the wraps and head and foot of the spine; small closed tear see images. Vierte Folge Band 22 1906-1907‎

‎FIRST EDITIONS OF 3 CLASSIC & IMPORTANT PAPERS BY EINSTEIN Band 22 of the 1907 Annalen der Physik. Weil 15 and 16; Boni 15 and 16. "DIE PLANCKSCHE THEORIE" Planck's Theory of Radiation and Theory of Specific Heat is Einstein's first paper on the quantum theory of solids the specific heat of solid bodies; as well this paper is the first systematic introduction of probability factors in quantum theory Calaprice Einstein Almanac 13. As Pais wrote "With this paper solid state quantum theory begins. the first paper ever written on the quantum theory of the solid state" Pais Subtle is the Lord 522. Einstein's paper is of historic import and is Weil 15. It is one of Einstein's early explorations into "the consequences of his revolutionary interpretation of Planck's formula for black-body radiation as hinting at a non-classical foundation of physics" Annalen Portal. To date the "heat capacity of solids as predicted by the empirical Dulong-Petit law was required by classical mechanics the specific heat of solids should be independent of temperature. But experiments at low temperatures showed that the heat capacity changes going to zero at absolute zero. As the temperature goes up the specific heat goes up until it approaches the Dulong and Petit prediction at high temperature" Wikipedia. To account for departures from the Dulong-Petit law Einstein exploited Planck's insight "into the non-classical behavior of atomic oscillators for a new understanding of the thermal properties of solid bodies in particular at lower temperatures" Annalen Portal By applying Planck's law to the oscillations of atoms and molecules in solids Einstein resolved the 19th century paradox of the equipartition theorem in classical physics. "By employing Planck's quantization assumption or making a deduction of Planck's radiation formula Einstein's theory could now account for the observed experimental trend for the first time. Together with the photoelectric effect this became one of the most important pieces of evidence for the need of quantization. Einstein used the levels of the quantum mechanical oscillator many years before the advent of modern quantum mechanics" Wikipedia. "BERICHTIGUNG ZU MEINER ALBEIT" is short correction to "Die Planckshe". "A classic paper this erratum offered a complete explanation for the specific heat of solids from absolute zero to above room temperature" Calaprice Einstein Almanac 13. Note that we offer this erratum separately and in original wraps. In "BER DIE GLTIGKEITSGRENZE" On the Limit of Validity of the Law of Thermodynamic Equilibrium and on the Possibility of a New Determination of the Elementary Quanta. Employing a thermodynamic approach Einstein here uses "voltage fluctuations in a condenser as a means of measuring Boltzmann's constant" Pais. "To test his theory he needed a new highly sensitive instrument - more sensitive than the available electrometers which could measure to a few thousandths of a volt. Einstein designed it had it built and famously called it his Maschinchen little machine. He toyed with the idea of patenting it but then dismissed the notion when manufacturers showed little interest. Instead he decided to publish a paper on the basic features of his machine the following year Calaprice 14. CONDITION & DETAILS: Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth 1906-1907. ‎HANDSOMELY BOUND FIRST EDITION OF 5 PAPERS BY ALBERT EINSTEIN. Note that the ORIGINAL FRONT WRAPS ARE BOUND IN. The front wraps of the five issues of Annalen der Physik that are bound here have been retained and are bound at the rear of the work. Four are Weil papers numbers 38 39 40 and 41 respectively. Number 39 is denoted with an asterisk meaning it is considered a "principal work". Weil number 39 is "Eine Beziehung zwischen dem elastischen Verhalten der spezifischen Wrme bei festen Krpern mit einatomigen Molekl" or A Relationship between Elastic Behavior and Specific Heat in Solids with a Monatomic Molecule. In it Einstein comments on an important 1910 paper by the Australian physicist William Sutherland that appeared in Phil Mag. "Sutherland made the important remark that the infrared eigenfrequencies of solid bodies have their origin possibly in the elastic vibrations of these bodies. Einstein impressed by this remark adds that electrically charged ions are the sources of optical vibrations whereas elastic vibrations are caused by the mutual motion of the entire molecule. Hence he prefers to test the hypothesis of Sutherland by solid bodies which are composed of monatomic molecules"Lanczos and Calaprice 31. ‎Allgemeine Relativittstheorie und Bewegungsgesetz. Offprint from Sitzungsbericht der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. The General Theory of Relativity and the Laws of Motion. 6 January 1927 pp. 2-13‎

‎FIRST EDITION OFFPRINT ISSUE IN ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPS FINE CONDITION. "Einstein and Grommer's work treats the particle as a singularity in the field and attemptss to obtain the equations of motion by imposing conditions on the exterior field in the neighborhood of the singularity" Stachel Einstein from 'B' to'Z' pp. 507. Weil 155. In 1927 Einstein's research "concentrated on a new approach to the problem of the motion of particles in a general field theory" Mehra The Golden Age of Theoretical Physics 997. He presented his work conducted with Jakob Grommer in this report. Einstein and Grommer here show that 'in the case of a pure gravitational field the mechanical behavior of singularities can be derived' a result which in Einstein's opinion 'opened the possibility to obtain on the basis of the field equations a theory of matter characterized as discontinuities in space' ibid 997; Einstein and Grommer 1927. "After Einstein had tried for years to obtain a theory of material particles in a generalized field theory by describing these objects with the help of continuous functions Einstein and Grommer now proposed 'to consider elementary particles as singular points or singular world lines respectively' motivated by the observation 'that both the equations of the pure gravitational field and the equations augmented by Maxwell's electromagnetic field possess simple spherically-symmetric solutions which contain a singularity' ibid. Finally they arrived at the result: In the approximation of the gravitational field obtained by solving linearized equations the equation of motion for a singularity is completely determined - at least in the case of equilibrium - and corresponds to the law of a geodetic line" ibid. ‎FIRST EDITION OF EINSTEIN'S DISCUSSION OF MACH'S PRINCIPLE a theory Einstein names and one which was historically important to the inspiration that would lead to general relativity. Mach's principle states that "local physical laws are determined by the large-scale structure of the universe" Wikipedia. To Einstein Mach's principle posited the belief that inertia originates in a kind of interaction between bodies. "So strongly did Einstein believe at that time in the relativity of inertia that in this paper he stated it as being on equal footing three principles on which a satisfactory theory of gravitation should rest: 1. The principle of relativity as expressed by general covariance. 2. The principle of equivalence. 3. Mach's principle the first time this term entered the literature" Pais The Science of Albert Einstein 287. Einstein brought Mach's principle into mainstream physics while working on general relativity. Indeed it was Einstein who first coined the phrase Mach's principle. Weil 96. Boni 100.

‎FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE of two important 1906 Einstein papers. Einstein wrote two papers on the photoelectric effect his revolutionary 1905 paper and "Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung und Lichtabsorption" his continuation of it. In them Einstein employed Planck's theory that luminous energy can be absorbed or emitted only in discrete amounts called quanta and proposed a theory of light quanta involving particles with no mass photons whose energy depended on frequency. All of Einstein's experimental results confirmed that light actually consisted of discrete energy packets. "Based on this theory Einstein wrote an equation describing how the photoelectric effect works. The energy of individual electrons emitted by a photocell is a function of the frequency of the light hitting the photocell and the rate of electron emission is a function of the light source's intensity number of photons with sufficient energy being emitted. This is contrary to what is predicted by classical physics" History of Physics: The Wenner Collection. In this Einstein's second paper on photoelectrics he revisited Planck's theory and from it developed his ideas to show that an electromagnetic wave such as light could be described as a particle photon with discrete quanta of energy that was dependent on its frequency. In the long history of quantum mechanics this would lead to a theory of unity between subatomic particles and electromagnetic waves called wave-particle duality in which particles and waves were neither one nor the other but had certain properties of both. At first Einstein believed that light-quantum hypothesis was merely 'heuristic': that it behaved only as if it consisted of discontinuous quanta. But in this paper and others to follow Einstein used his statistical mechanics to demonstrate that when light interacts with matter Planck's entire formula can arise only from the existence of light quanta -- not from waves. In other words in explaining the photoelectric effect by extending Planck's concept of quantum of energy had Einstein "demonstrated that his own 'light-quantum hypothesis' was implicit in Planck's earlier work" Honner The Description of Nature 31. ALSO included in this volume is "Daz Prinzip von der Erhaltung." The Principle of Conservation of Motion of the Center of Gravity and the Inertia of Energy. In this "ingenious thought experiment involving energy transport in a hollow cylinder Einstein returned to the relationship between inertial mass and energy giving more general arguments for their complete equivalence" Calaprice The Einstein Almanac 18. This was the first statement that the conservation of mass is a special case of the conservation of energy. CONDITION & DETAILS: Leipzig: Barth 1906. Octavo. 8.75 x 6 inches; 222 x 152mm. ‎Theoretische Atomistik WITH BOUND Die Relativittstheorie in Physik unter Redaktion 1915 pp. 251-263 and pp. 703-713‎

‎FIRST EDITION OF ALBERT EINSTEIN'S PAPER ON THEORETICAL ATOMISM ALSO BOUND WITH A PAPER ON GENERAL RELATIVITY. Both papers are included in Weil's catalog respectively numbers 70 and 71. In "Theoretische Atomistik" Einstein emphasizes the importance of Brownian motion specifically the direct relationship between Brownian motion and 'thermal motion.' In this paper Einstein notes that "Under the microscope one to some extent immediately sees a part of thermal energy in the form of mechanical energy of moving particles" "Theoretische Atomistik 262. Einstein further states "that an increase in theoretical simplicity and comprehensiveness may be due to a reduced number of fundamental concepts or to independent relations among the concepts. He discussed the quantitative relation among the coefficients of viscosity heat conduction and diffusion as established by the kinetic theory of gases" Calaprice The Einstein Almanac 46. The second paper "Die Relativittstheorie" is a comprehensive exposition of the general theory of relativity this preceeding by one year his seminal first full exposition of general relativity in 1916. ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS VOLUME: Wien W. "Theorie der Wrmestrahlung" pp. 209-222; Lorentz H. A. "Die Maxwellsche Theorie und die Elektronentheorie" pp. 311-333; Zeeman P. "Magnetooptik" pp. 627-650; Planck M. "Das Prinzip der kleinstein Wirkung" pp. 692-702; "Verhltnis der Theorien zueinander" pp. 732-737. CONDITION & DETAILS: Leipzig and Berlin: B. G. Teubner. ‎Sur L'Electrodynamique Des Corps En Mouvement and L'inertie d'un corps dpend-elle de sa capacit d'nergie 1925‎

‎First French edition of Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter Korper On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies and 1st die Tragheit eines Korpers von seinem Energieinhalt abhangig Does the Inertia of a Body Depend on its Energy Content. Both 1905 treatises are "beyond compare and without precedent one of the greatest scientific achievements in content and one of the most brilliant in style" Gosling Albert Einstein. The first paper is "a landmark in the development of physics one of the two papers that laid out the theory of special relativity formulated a new conception of time. By assuming that the speed of light is the same to every observer moving at a constant velocity Einstein showed that space and time were not independent: spacetime was born. According to Hermann Weyl in 1918 this theory 'led to the discovery that time is associated as a fourth coordinate on an equal footing with the other three coordinates of space and that the scene of material events the world is therefore a four-dimensional metrical continuum.' It was a revolutionary piece of scientific work" Calaprice The Einstein Almanac 15. In the second work Einstein uses "the postulates of the special theory of relativity Einstein showed that energy radiated is equivalent to mass lost. For the first time he concluded that 'the mass of a body is a measure of its energy content'" ibid 16. CONDITION & DETAILS: Paris: Gauthier-Villars 1925. Small 8vo. 4 56 2 6 catalog. ILLUSTRATION: Frontispiece portrait of Einstein. EXTERIOR: Complete issue bound in original light brown stiff wraps. Some light surface dirt on the front wraps and a small area in the lower right where a piece of tape has been removed. Two barely visible repairs at the spine. Tightly bound. INTERIOR: Complete. Very small spot at the upper margin of page 3. Otherwise very good condition throughout. Gauthier-Villars paperback‎

‎The Meaning of Relativity‎

‎CRC Press/Atlantic Publishers & Distributors 2003. Softcover. New. The world would be a very different place if it were not for Albert Einstein. Like Newton and Galileo before him this remarkable scientist changed forever mankind`s understanding of the universe. In 1921 five years after proclaiming his general theory of relativity Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in recognition of his remarkable achievements. In the same year he travelled to the United States to give four lectures that consolidated his theory and sought to explain its meaning to a new audience. These lectures were published the following year as The Meaning of Relativity which he revised with each new edition until his death. It remains a key work for anyone wishing to discover at first hand the workings of one of the most inspiring minds of the twentieth century. Space and Time in Pre-Relativity Physics. The Theory of Special Relativity. The General Theory of Relativity. Appendix I On the `Cosmologic Problem`. Appendix II Relativistic Theory of the Non-Symmetric Field. Index Printed Pages: 192.
