Jan Bleuland, professeur d'anatomie et de chirurgie à Utrecht, mena une carrière brillante, au cours de laquelle il réalisa plus de 2000 préparations anatomiques qui firent sa renommée ; sa collection est conservée au musée de l'Université d'Utrecht. Mais avant toutes choses, il doit sa gloire aux avancées considérables qu'il permit dans le domaine de la biologie médicale, en perfectionnant et en généralisant la coloration des tissus afin de faciliter leur observation microscopique. Au geste scientifique, il sut joindre la prouesse éditoriale en choisissant, certes naturellement, néanmoins avec ambition et faisant fi de la difficulté technique, la jeune gravure en couleurs pour l'illustration de ses publications. Les 4 dernières planches de cet ouvrage témoignent de sa maîtrise du procédé et sont un exemple parfait de la technique de la coloration des tissus. "Pour illustrer ses ouvrages, Bleuland utilisa la technique de la gravure en couleurs dont les délicates images reflètent une évolution de la sensibilité des illustrateurs anatomiques et des médecins, qui se tournent désormais vers des techniques plus légères, susceptibles d'entrer plus profond dans le détail" (Anatomie de la couleur). The 51 astonishingly beautiful hand-coloured copperplates show the morphology of plants and insects in great detail as well as his magnificent specially constructed microscope and its different parts making it of the utmost importance to the history of the microscope as well as the fertilization processes in plants. <br><br>With his thorough study of the pollen stamens and pistils as well as the process connected with them magnificently presented in great detail on beautifully produced plates the work became a great source of inspiration for many biologists and microscopists of the 18th century. The microscope described and depicted here was frequently reproduced from the detailed plates and Gleichen-Russworm's experiments widely repeated in order to investigate the true nature of the plant. The plates depicting the microscope are among the most frequently reproduced depictions of microscopes. <br><br>The work appeared in three fascicles between 1763 and 1766 and were issued with a title-page stating 1764. <br><br>Wilhelm Friedrich von Gleichen known as Russworm 1717 - 1783 belongs to the outstanding microscopists of the eighteenth century. He was the elder son of Heinrich von Gleichen and Caroline von Russworm. "He received little formal education and in 1734 after some years as a page at the court of Prince Thurn und Taxis in Frankfurt he decided to make his career in the forces of the margrave of Bayreuth. . Gleichen-Russworm remained in the army until 1756 when he resigned his commission in order to devote himself to the management of the Greifenstein estates inherited from his mother in 1748. His first published writings appeared after his departure from Bayreuth in the periodical "Fr�nkische Sammlung aus der Naturlehre Arzneigelahrtheit �konomie und der damit verbundenen Wissenschaften"; they deal inter alia with natural history physics and chemistry but are for the most part quite fanciful.<br>. In the summer of 1760 Gleichen-Russworm made the acquaintance of Martin Lederm�ller who had already begun publication of his "Mikroskopische Gem�ths- und Augenerg�tzungen" 1759-1762; it was this work which led Gleichen-Russworm to concentrate on microscopy. Lederm�ller visited Schloss Greifenstein in 1762 and Gleichen-Russworm continued to benefit from his advice until the former took offense at certain criticisms of his work which appeared in "Geschichte der gemeinen Stubenfliege" 1764.<br>Gleichen-Russworm was particularly interested in the processes of fertilization in plants and animals and in 1763 he published the first fascicle of Das neueste aus dem Reiche der Pflanzen. This work contains fifty-one colored plates illustrating numerous details of floral structure and various pollens; in addition his interest in the construction of the microscope is reflected in the six plates devoted to the different modifications and accessories which he designed for the instrument. His account of the pollen of Asclepias syriaca L. in Auserlesene mikroskopische Entdeckungen 1777-1781 contains what appears to be the first observation of a pollen tube although he remained unaware of its significance." Rara memoria in cui Rezzi si sofferma sulla dibattuta questione dell'invenzione del microscopio attribuendola all'inglese Cornelio Drebelio. Aggiunge l'A. "Se Galileo pero' non ha la gloria d'avere inventato il microscopio, non ha forse quella, che infra tutti fu il solo che seppe indovinare in Roma il modo d'usarne? che pose subito mano a fabbricarne parecchi? e che laddove era fino allora rimasto nelle mani del Drebelio e de' principi e cortigiani strumento di vano trastullo e passatempo, lo rivolse ad uso pubblico e all'ingrandimento dell'umano sapere...?". Nella seconda parte (pp. 25-28), l'A. parla dell'inedito galileiano, rinvenuto da Pierantonio Serassi, con considerazioni sulla Gerusalemme liberata di Tasso. L'ultima parte e' riservata a considerazioni sull'appartenenza o meno di Alessandro Adimari (Firenze, 1579 - Firenze, 1649), letterato e poeta lirico marinista, all'Accademia dei Lincei.

Entire volume: VII 857 pp. � First printing of Ruska and Knoll's seminal paper in which the first description of an electron microscope appears. This allowed researchers for the first time to view objects as small as the diameter of an atom. Not only did the discovery have profound influence on physics it also revolutionized biological research as it now became possible to distinguish individual molecules. Ruska received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1986 for his discovery regarding the electron microscope.<br><br>In 1933 the theoretical description presented in the present paper led Ruska to build a two-stage electron microscope with a resolution exceeding that of the optical microscope. The technique behind is largely built upon de Broglie's revolutionary theory regarding the wavelength of electrons. <br><br>The volume contains many important contributions to 20th century physics among others: <br>Heisenberg W. �ber den Bau der Atomkerne. II. Pp. 156-64: <br>This is the second paper in a series of three which presents Heisenberg's neutron-proton model. Shortly after Chadwick discoverd the neutron in 1932 Heisenberg developed a theory suggesting that atomic nuclei are composed of protons and neutrons this introduced the concept of the nuclear exchange force and isotopic spin.
