First edition of the Italian polymath's enormously successful work here in a well-preserved contemporary vellum binding arguably the most famous example of a Newtonian text aimed at a female readership and "a landmark in the popularisation of Newtonian philosophy" Mazzotti p. 119. In this important contribution to the emerging literary genre focused on introducing women to traditionally male-gendered scientific disciplines Count Francesco Algarotti 1712-1764 presents an elegant set of six dialogues which introduce the fictitious listener an Italian marchesa to the basics of Newton's Opticks and converts her from the influence of "Cartesian Phantoms" to Newtonianism. Algarotti's adoption of non-technical language in particular distinguishes it from the plurality of popular Newtoniana as does his positive references to a contemporary female scientist. Rebecca Messbarger has pointed out that the verse which prompts the discussion of science pays homage to Laura Bassi professor of philosophy and physics at the University of Bologna internationally recognised for her expertise in Newtonian optics. Algarotti who had studied experimental physics with Bassi was present in 1732 when Bassi became the first woman awarded a degree by the University. Despite its immediate popularity some of Algarotti's contemporaries notably the mathematician Émilie Du Châtelet - herself a translator of Newton's Principia - dismissed the work as frivolous ridiculing it as fashionable rather than a work of serious merit. She was also perhaps insulted to be so closely associated with such a banal reading of Newton; the likenesses in the frontispiece of the narrator and Marchesa were said to be modelled on her and Algarotti walking the grounds of her estate of Cirey where he completed writing the book. Modern critics are also divided as to how far it actually promotes a view of women as interested in the latest scientific theories due to the Marchesa's passivity and stated inability to grasp the more complex theories. Nevertheless it achieved widespread acclaim across Europe and went through a great many revisions and translations; a French edition swiftly appeared in 1738 and the first English translation 1739 was prepared by the Bluestocking Elizabeth Carter. It also achieved notoriety: it is the only popularization of Newtonianism to be listed in the Index librorum prohibitorum also in 1739 banned by the Holy Office for its perceived radical political messages: the latent promotion of Lockean philosophy which the Church decreed to have subversive religious and political implications. Algarotti's printed dedication is intriguingly addressed to the French scientist and Cartesian Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle whose Entretiens sur la Pluralité des Mondes Paris 1686 was a precursor in style to Algarotti's work though with very opposing subject matter being a dialogic explanation of Cartesian science to a naive marquise. Fontenelle's work was similarly translated by a famed female English writer Aphra Behn. The "Preface" is an historical account of Newton's method "la sublime m�thode" written by Buffon. Without the leaf "Extrait des Registres". � The influential first French edition of Newton's important work which constitutes the most extensive description of the mathematical method he used in his famous "Principia" the method of infinitesimals which was already written about 1671 but not published until 1736 i.e. posthumously with the title "Method of Fluxions and Infinite Series.". <br><br>In this work "Newton stated clearly the fundamental problem of the calculus: the relation of quantities being given to find the relation of the fluxions of these and conversely. In conformity with this problem and the new notation Newton then gave examples of his method.In this book Newton introduced his characteristic notation and conceptions. He regarded his variable quantities as generated by the continuous motion of points lines and planes rather than as aggregates of infinitesimal elements the view which had appeared in "De analysi".The rate of generation Newton called a "fluxion" designating it by means of a letter with a dot over it a "pricked letter" the quantity generates he called a "fluent". Boyer The History of the Calculus.<br><br>Colson in his preface to the first edition from 1736 says: "I gladly embraced the opportunity that was put into my hands of publishing this posthumous work because I found it had been composed with that view and design. And that my own Country-men might first enjoy the benefit of this publication I resolved upon giving it an English translation with some additional remarks of my own I thought it highly injurious to the memory and reputation of the real Author as well as invidious to the glory of our own Nation that so curious and useful a piece should be any longer suppress'd and confined to a few private hands which ought to be communicated to all the learned World for general Instruction.<br><br>It was through the French translations of his works that Newton came to play the seminal role as the most important of mathematicians that he did in France and particularly the years around 1740 when the present work appeared in French for the first time were seminal to the scientific development in France where the likes of Voltaire had only just made the nation acquinted with the work of the great mathematician. <br><br>Gray No 236.
