Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering and decoration pictorial dust jacket. xviii 188pp. Illustrations maps. Near fine/very good. Faint jacket edgewear. A superb tight and scarce first edition of the first book to bear noted historian Ambrose's name -- here as editor. His first solo title a biography of Henry Halleck was published the following year. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. On letterhead of "The State of Wisconsin State Historical Society" Ambrose tells this long-time officer of the New York Civil War Round Table "I have been asked by the editor of the Wisconsin Magazine of History. to prepare an article on the Civil War Round Tables of the country" and asks Gates "if you will be good enough to help me in my preliminary research by filling out the enclose questionnaire." Boldly signed in full in blue ink. An exceptionally early letter predating by two years Ambrose's first teaching position -- and a handsome first edition of one of his first academic endeavors. London: Headline Review 2007 9780755316021. 233 x 151 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. x 246 incl. index; map; colour plates. Very good condition. "In Armed Action Lieutenant Commander James Newton provides a breathtaking personal account of the ferocious battles that followed the British assault on Basra. Newton and his colleagues in the illustrious 847 Naval Air Squadron fought against tanks mortar units snipers and entire divisions of Iraqi troops as the Marines on the ground laid siege to the strategically vital oil installations. The skills that saw him survive the attacks in Iraq were the result of 15 years' experience flying all the aircraft the Navy has and some it doesn't. In Armed Action one of Britain's modern-day war heroes recounts the awe-inspiring and engrossing story of a career that explodes into terrifying action in the apocalyptic setting of southern Iraq. Dramatic and moving this is the truth about life as a frontline helicopter pilot; living and fighting alongside the Royal Marines one of the most revered combat forces in the world." .
