In un mosaico di appunti e spunti deliberatamente incompiuti, l'autore sviluppa la sua tesi partendo dalle enclaves libertarie ed egualitarie presenti in diversi momenti della socialità umana - di cui già parlano antropologi come Marcel Mauss o Pierre Clastres - per arrivare alle forme di contropotere esistenti nel mondo occidentale, e non solo. Viene così abbozzata una ridefinizione dello Stato e delle organizzazioni politiche che apre a considerazioni fortemente innovative sui concetti di dominio, gerarchia, autorità.
