"L'étude des crimes de la foule est, en effet, très intéressante, surtout pendant cette fin de siècle, durant laquelle, de la grève des ouvriers aux soulèvements publics, les violences collectives de la plèbe ne manquent pas. Il semble qu'elle veuille parfois soulager, par un crime, tous les ressentiments que les douleurs et les injustices souffertes ont accumulés en elle. Ajoutez à cela que le sujet, malgré sa grande importance sociale et juridique, était cependant nouveau : ni la science ni les tribunaux n'avaient jamais pensé que parfois, au lieu d'un seul individu, le coupable pût être une foule." (Avant-propos) Le livre aborde le problème de la responsabilité pénale d'une foule. Il commente les idées de Gabriel Tarde, Max Nordhau, Herbert Spencer et d'autres. Fearing can be efficiently analyzed as a communication technique. Through symbolic means, shared fear meanings are transmitted among humans, tending to confirm and maintain culturally established norms and values. Sociophobics extends the anthropological conception of cultural systems to include fearing as a characteristic feature of learned behavior, thus opening the way to cross-cultural comparisons of an important emotional experience. This study of a specific human affective state rests on a general theory of emotions rooted in the social-cultural nature of humankind.
