First edition.<br /><br />This is the first book to describe Mexican American folk medicine from an insider's point of view. Curanderismo is an important health resource for Mexican American to who the title curandero represents a healer who is part of an historically and culturally important health system. This is an ethnography of the healing theories and practices of curanderos in Mexican American communities in the United States. It describes how the healers perceive health and illness within their own theoretical frame work how they use that perspective to diagnose and cure both natural and supernatural diseases. Both authors were invited to apprentice with curanderos and the describe curanderismo as a healing system rather than a loose collection of beliefs and superstitions. The book presents an intimate view of not only how curanderismo is practiced by also how it is learned and passed on as a healing tradition. The authors have uncovered the theoretical basis which curanderos use to interpret disease and illness and to recommend appropriate therapy. Three different systems of healing and presented tied together by the theories of energy inherent in curanderismo. The first system the material level derives out of European magic and witchcraft as well as Native American beliefs and practices. The second is a description of the growing use of spiritualism and trance mediumship within the Mexican American communities. The Third is the mental level where curanderos project mental energy to heal their patients. By using the curanderos' own methods establishing rapport becoming part of the healing and support system and by observing and participating in healing sessions and rituals over a period of three years Trotter and Chavira were able to analyze and comment on the relationship between theory beliefs and practices of curanderismo providing a better understanding of why curanderos continue to be in demand despite the life saving capabilities of modern medicine.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Occasional underling and some check marks through out. Roberto Arizzi, pittore, scultore e scrittore sammaritano, nell'introduzione ha spiegato che, pur avendo scritto quest’opera nel 1999, l’ha presentata in pubblico solo qualche mese fa nel Museo Campano di Capua, diretto dal rev. canonico prof. Giuseppe Centore, sacerdote encomiabile per dottrina e per dinamismo. Perché? si chiederebbe il lettore. Per il semplice motivo, che egli non aveva avuto il bisogno di comunicare riflessioni personali, talora inquietanti. Certo, aveva avuto qualche perplessità nel mettersi in relazione con una società spesso distratta, inebetita dal consumismo e dal conformismo, rapiti dall'immagine spesso grossolana e volgare, trascinata nel vortice da un edonismo sfrenato e stolto, proclive all'evasione dal luogo, dal tempo e dal pensiero che sempre più raramente si posa sulla gravità dei problemi del mondo odierno, guerre, emigrazioni massicce, fame, malattia, sovrappopolazione, i progressi della genetica, la violenza, il crollo di muri, di ideologie e di valori. La prima tratta storia e critica veterotestamentaria; comincia con la crisi della religione, la concezione del cosmo nella Bibbia, la mitologia classica, la trasgressione di Adamo ed Eva, la disobbedienza di Prometeo, il diluvio come punizione. Seguono originali interpretazioni della Bibbia ed acute osservazioni sul Messianismo. La seconda parte sostiene che le fiabe, terreno ideale per il bene e il male, debbono inserire il tema della vita e della morte. Il racconto di Pinocchio è l’emblematico bisogno di creare, per la solitudine di Geppetto, un fantoccio; ma, esso acquista coscienza di essere ed autonomo, col conseguente contrasto con il creatore. La fata è la figura femminile, forse la madre, forse Psiche, che rappresenta la coscienza di Pinocchio; il premio finale è la trasformazione da fantoccio in bambino: qui si compie il più alto atto della creazione della coscienza di Pinocchio, indipendente dal padre. La terza parte affronta il rapporto tra scienza filosofia e religione. L’evoluzione del rapporto uomo-universo presuppone, come punto di partenza, il geocentrismo e similmente l’egocentrismo; poi, si passa all'eliocentrismo e, di conseguenza, all'antropocentrismo; fenomeni e prassi, contingenza, noumeno e doxa si poggiano sulla trascendenza. Nell'ultima parte, si approfondisce la problematica dell’idea della morte: l’uomo può solo constatare che la morte è un mutamento di stato. L’uomo esige una definizione del mutamento; già i Padri della Chiesa affrontarono il problema di Dio, per dare consistenza alla loro fede. Il concetto di mutamento è il concetto stesso della storia, che s’instaura sulla relazione spazio-tempo. La problematica non ha legittimità quando si fonda su enti che non sono delle prassi. La coscienza è fenomeno in prassi, perché è informata del tempo, spazio, storia e l’uomo riflette; in questa affermazione, si potrebbe cogliere l’aspetto solipsistico, espressione del creatore-creato. La conclusione è che in questa epoca di grandi cambiamenti, emerge la crisi della religione, specie in Occidente. Roberto Arizzi ha cercato (e ci è riuscito in massima parte) di definire una serie di problematiche, stabilendo una differenza tra essere ed esistere e tra creatore-creato, che non si esauriscono nella dialettica più o meno complementare o finalistica, ma come problematica, che rinnova ed amplia il senso del riconoscimento che Dio è totalità.

The gilt on the spine is almost completely faded. The binding is rubbed & bumped with the head & tail of the spine lightly chipped. There is some white spotting to the rear cover. 506 pages. Profusely illustrated with diagrams & music staves. There is some light foxing to the fore-edge. Good. <p>Songs of the Copper Eskimos recorded on a phonograph between 1914 and 1916 either at Bernard harbour in Dolphin and Union Straits or at Eskimo settlements in the immediate vicinity.
