‎Edition originale rare agrémentée d'une planche dépliante gravée in fine figurant des crânes de diverses origines ethniques. Exemplaire revêtu en regard de la page de titre de la signature autographe de l'imprimeur. ''Blumenbach fut le fondateur de l'anthropologie. Sa classification des races, cependant avec quelques modifications mineures, est demeurée la même aujourd'hui''. (in Garrison & Morton). ''Cet ouvrage de l'anthropologue allemand J. F. Blumenbach (1752-1840), publié à Göttingen en 1795 sous le titre De generis humani varietate nativa, propose une définition de la notion de race dans le cas de l'espèce humaine — ce qui fera souvent considérer son auteur comme l'un des premiers promoteurs de conceptions strictement racistes, tels Sömmerring et Meiners. Il s'agit néanmoins d'un contresens, dans la mesure où la théorie de Blumenbach, dite dégénérationniste, défend que tous les hommes proviennent d'une souche unique (monogénisme) et ne sont différents qu'en vertu de modifications climatiques progressives et réversibles.'' (in Catalogue Alde, n°215). ''Kant considérait que l'espèce humaine était à son origine pourvu de germes susceptibles d'être activés par tel ou tel climat afin de s'y adapter. C'est d'après lui le mécanisme de la raciation de l'espèce humaine. Ainsi, contrairement à ce qu'on a cru, Kant et Blumenbach sont convaincus de l'unité de l'espèce humaine : « toutes les nations, sous tous les climats, appartiennent strictement à une seule et même espèce ». Blumenbach défend une forme de monogénisme contre certains de ses contemporains, en particulier l'anatomiste Samuel Thomas Sömmerring et l'historien et essayiste Christoph Meiners. Mais au cours du xixe siècle l’hérédité de ces caractères raciaux sera rapidement démontrée, ensuite Darwin apportera l'explication de la différenciation raciale à l’intérieur de l'espèce par le même mécanisme que pour la différenciation des espèces : la sélection naturelle''. The book was immensely influential not only in establishing anthropoly as an academic discipline and in academia in general it was also a dominant factor in the public opinion since it challenged the widely held racist and eugenic claims about race and intelligence and particularly white supremacy. <br>Boas concludes the book with an examination of racism in the United States. He expresses his hope that anthropology can lead to more tolerance and sympathy for different civilizations since "all races have contributed in the past to cultural progress in one way or another" From the present work a goal he to a large extend succeded with: It is a work "which have changed men's mind". He stated there that "The judgment of the mental states of a people is generally guided by the difference between its social status and our own and the greater the difference between their intellectual emotional and moral processes and those which are found in our civilization the harsher our judgment." Thus began a new current among modern ethnologists antiquarians historians of culture and anthropologists with regards to primitives. The ex fonte thought of Boas affected the succeeding generations of scholars and within three decades had revolutionized the attitudes toward primitive culture and mentality." Quinn The Only Tradition p. 170.<br><br>"When Boas began his work in America evolutionism was the dominant even "hegemonic" paradigm in anthropology sociology and political economy. Intellectuals of the political left were as invested in evolutionism as were those on the right. In addition to evolutionism racial determinism and social Darwinism were also in the ascendance and these touched the emotions and socioeconomic interests of American and European elites even more. . <br>Boas's attack on evolutionism in addition to its theoretical and technical aspects involved an attempt to establish the common humanity of "Primitive Man" in scientific and popular discourse; to remove the supposed gap between "our" minds and "theirs" and to question the assumption that "our" culture is special exalted better than other." .<br>Beginning in 1894 Boas began to directly confront the question of the differences between "primitive man" and "civilized man" and racial differences and racial prejudices in a series of papers that eventuated in his 1911 book the present. The main argument was: "There is no fundamental difference in the way of thinking of primitive and civilized man. A close connection between race and personality has never been established. He concludes the book with a plea for greater tolerance of other "forms of civilization" and sympathy for "foreign races" so that "as all races have contributed in past to cultural progress in one way or another so they will be capable of advancing the interests of mankind if we are only willing to give them a fair opportunity".
