Non è improprio affermare che l'antropologia cristiana è un'antropologia in chiave simbolica, nel momento in cui essa definisce l'uomo icona di Dio, immagine della Sua gloria pur se porta in sé le stimmate del peccato. L'uomo, creato a immagine di Dio e recante in sé il Suo sigillo, è perciò per sua costituzione proiettato in una dimensione simbolica, ed è istintivamente portato a riconoscere in ciò che lo circonda - la natura, in primis, - la stessa valenza simbolica dalla quale si sente costituito. Un tipo di attenzione alle espressioni simboliche che l'uomo nella sua storia si è dato, in tutte le epoche e in ogni luogo, sembra spesso considerare questo atteggiamento come un inevitabile, ma fortunatamente passeggero, stadio di inferiorità dell'uomo, destinato a superarlo e ad affrancarsi attraverso la realizzazione di sé in un umanesimo assoluto. Ma come rammenta Mircea Eliade in un illuminante saggio, «il pensiero simbolico non è di dominio esclusivo del bambino, del poeta o dello squilibrato; esso precede il linguaggio e il ragionamento discorsivo, e rivela determinati aspetti della realtà - gli aspetti più profondi - che sfuggono a qualsiasi altro mezzo di conoscenza». È indispensabile partire da questa constatazione per addentrarci nel campo dell'espressione simbolica, e ciò vale in misura particolare quando si voglia accostare la cultura medievale, senza dubbio quella che maggiormente ha reso visibile nelle sue manifestazioni la dimensione simbolica che la permeava. Questo libro parla di arte, perché è per lo più attraverso l'arte che possiamo conoscere oggi la cultura e la spiritualità medievale. Ma non si ferma alla sola arte, come non limita il suo campo al solo Medioevo. Va a scoprire nel cuore dell'uomo di ogni epoca e di ogni luogo il bisogno inarrestabile di immagine e di simbolo; lo fa mettendo in evidenza tra l'altro persistenze ed analogie impensabili lungo l'arco della storia, nel tempo e nello spazio. Dalla lettura del "Dizionario Simboli del Medioevo" si esce più consapevoli di appartenere a una umanità che trascende le diversità di razza e di cultura; l'uomo, prima che come essere sociologicamente, etnicamente e culturalmente determinato, esiste come creatura ed afferma la sua fratellanza con gli altri uomini riconoscendo ed esprimendo sia pure in forme diverse il medesimo rapporto che lo lega al Creatore. Che questo tema venga accostato mediante la contemplazione di molte fra le opere d'arte più belle che il Medioevo abbia prodotto, ci pare particolarmente significativo, perché pone a sottofondo di tutto il testo il desiderio più grande dell'uomo: quello della eterna bellezza, quella bellezza che Hans Urs von Balthasar definisce «l'ultima parola che l'intelletto pensante può osare di pronunciare, perché essa non fa altro che incorniciare, quale aureola di splendore inafferrabile, il duplice astro del vero e del bene e il loro indissolubile rapporto». Antropologia e teologia si ricompongono dunque in una misteriosa e inseparabile unità.

First edition.In 1426 the Tepanec king Tezozomoc died and the resulting succession crisis precipitated a civil war. The Mexica supported Tezozomoc's preferred heir Tayahauh who was initially enthroned as king. His son Maxtla soon usurped the throne and turned against those factions that opposed him including the Mexica king Chimalpopoca. Chimalpopoca died shortly after this possibly assassinated by Maxtla. The new Mexica king Itzcoatl remained defiant to Maxtla and in response Maxtla had Tenochtitlan blockaded and demanded increased tribute payments. Maxtla similarly turned against the Acolhua and the king of Texcoco Nezahualcoyotl fled into exile. Nezahualcoyotl recruited the military assistance of the king of Huexotzinco and the Mexica gained the support of a dissident Tepanec city Tlacopan. In 1427 Tenochtitlan Texcoco Tlacopan and Huexotzinco went to war with Azcapotzalco and emerged victorious in 1428.
