Hinter dem Mythos des 20. Juli 1944 verbirgt sich der besondere Antisemitismus des deutschen Adels im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Juden galten in adligen Kreisen oft als »Fremdrassige«, die die adlige »Blutreinheit« bedrohten. Auf den Schlössern und Rittergütern hatten Juden bis 1945 nichts verloren. Sie trugen vermeintlich Schuld an Revolutionen, an Kriegsniederlagen, am Sturz der Monarchie und an der Errichtung der Weimarer Republik. Der Hass auf die Juden wurde schließlich »von allen moralischen Skrupeln befreit«. Jutta Ditfurth erzählt die bewegte Geschichte von Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen. Sein engster Freund war um 1900 der Künstler Ephraim Moses Lilien - bis Münchhausen zum glühenden Antisemiten wurde.
