Almost none of these problems has been convincingly handled, even in a provisional way, up to the present, and this failure has vitiated not only such few general discussions as exist of the nature, meanings and functions of myths but also, in many cases, the detailed assessment of individual myths of different cultures. The need for a coherent treatment of these and related problems, and one that is not concerned simply to propagate a particular universalistic theory, seems undeniable. How far the present book will satisfactorily fill such a need remains to be seen. At least it makes a beginning, even if in doing so it risks the criticism of being neither fish nor fowl. Sociologists and folklorists may find it, from their specialized viewpoints, a little simplistic in places; and a few classical colleagues will not forgive me for straying far beyond Greek myths, even though these can hardly be understood in isolation or solely in the light of studies in cult and ritual. Others may find it less easy than anthropologists, sociologists, historians of thought or students of French and English literature to accept the relevance of Levi-Strauss to some of these matters; but his theory contains the one important new idea in this field since Freud, it is complicated and largely untested, and it demands careful attention from anyone attempting a broad understanding of the subject. The beliefs of Freud and Jung, on the other hand, are a more familiar element in the situation and have given rise to an enormous secondary literature, much of it arbitrary and some of it absurd. The author has tried to isolate the crucial ideas and subject them to a pointed, if too brief, critique; so too with those of Ernst Cassirer.

Besides the description of his travels throughout the West the book contains hundreds of line drawings of southern and western Indians as well as two significant maps showing the locations of Indian tribes. Catlin first went west in 1830 travelling extensively for the next six years accumulating his "Indian Gallery." LETTERS AND NOTES. was published when he brought the exhibition to London.<br /><br />Condition: Title of volume I with a large pale damp stain volume II title and first contents leaf with a couple of pencil marks both titles and most plates with some pale foxing a few plates and the folding map brittle at edges with tiny chips/tears not affecting images the folding map cleanly split at one fold one plate with gutter tear in margin two plates with chipped corners one of which is laid down on paper. A fine decorative binding internally very good. <br />First American edition of Catlin's landmark study of Native Americans. Catlin visited 48 Indian tribes on his tour of the West and executed some 600 paintings. Letters and Notes includes hundreds of engravings which were reduced from the original paintings under Catlin's supervision. The text and illustrations portray diverse aspects of Indian life including village scenes games dances funerals sudatories religious ceremonies buffalo hunting etc. plus detailed descriptions and depictions of native dress and custom. After taking the entire gallery of his paintings to England Catlin published his "Letters & Notes" using text from a series of articles he had written for the New York Commercial Advertiser from 1832 to 1837 and illustrating it with line-cut reductions of his original paintings. The folding map is of the Indian Localities in 1833 a second map in vol. II shows the effects of forced migration after 1840. La transe, che durante il XIX secolo era collegata a esperimenti medianici e ipnotici, è diventata oggetto di ricerche etnologiche. Oggi in Occidente essa non riguarda più solo pochi specialisti e affiora nella nostra società. Tuttavia, l'attuale movimento della transe manca di basi teoriche: può cominciare a costruirle, sostiene Lapassade, se inizia a interessarsi realmente a ciò che accade in altre culture, ritrovando dispositivi, procedure iniziatiche e tecniche nella prospettiva di una ripresa creativa e consapevole delle proprie risorse vitali. La prima parte del libro descrive la genealogia delle varie figure di transe, dalle società primitive fino alle nuove forme di transe metropolitane, passando attraverso il culto di Dioniso, il vodu, il sabba del Medioevo. Nella seconda parte, la transe investe la psicosociologia dei gruppi e la psicoterapia rituale. Infine, la terza e ultima parte presenta gli aspetti principali di un'antropologia della transe e dell'esperienza di una coscienza "modificata" o "esplodente", affrontando inoltre il problema dell'eventuale "simulazione" di questo stato "secondo" del corpo e della coscienza.
