Music in Primitive Culture
Cambridge Massachusetts: Harvard University Press 1956. Very Good condition in Near Very Good Dust Jacket light soil and fraying to extremities of jacket. No owner's name or bookplate. Square and tight. Includes sections on North American Eskimo/Indian music; and African and "New World Negro" music. Chapter notes. Index. There is a 22-page annotated bibliography and a 17-page section with 60 short examples of music illustrating typical styles. From the Preface: "The purpose of this book is to introduce the music of primitive people to students scholars and laymen. It is not intended to interest the specialist in non-Western music who will find little here that is new to him. I have not covered systematically the music of all primitive cultures. It has been my purpose rather to show the kinds of phenomena that occur in primitive music to give examples and to indicate how they have been studied and to what general conclusions they have led." From the Dust Jacket: "Mr. Nettl considers methods of research primitive musical instruments and techniques of primitive performances of music. He discusses such things as the criteria used by natives to determine 'good' singers and songs." Keywords: Ethnomusicology. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Original black cloth/DJ Not Price Clipped 5.00. 8vo. xviii 200pp. Harvard University Press Hardcover

Neubauer, Janna:
-- Inhalt: Peter Rödler: "Nobody is perfect!" Newcomb Franc Johnson
Navaho Neighbors
ix236 pages with 24 illustrations and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" issued yellow cloth with brown label and black lettering in original pictorial jacket. First edition.

Mrs Newcomb's recollections of here Navaho friends and neighbors during the twenty-five years she and her huband operated the Blue Mesa trading post on the Navaho reservation have far greater significance than mere pleasant reading. From 1914 when she first started to become acquainted with the Navahos as individuals rather than as a tribe Mrs Newcomb has been in a unique position to learn about their daily lives meas of subsistence character and religion. Many Navahos she discovered lived on the very lowest rung of the economic ladder while others by comparison were in comfortable circumstances. But all maintained tribal standards that served to place them on an equal footing - offering hospitality to strangers helping the sick or cripples cring for orphans and the aged and working on community projects. Many Navaho customs and traditions are revealed in these pages - from healing ceremonies and means of exorcising evil spirits to the acquiring of special powers. Mrs Newcomb says a prominent anthropologist has "experienced and penetrated into Navaho life as no other Anglo I know has ever done" and this account surely demonstrates the truth of the remark.

Condition:

Previous owner's name scratched out on front end paper corners bumped occasional underlining.
