Il riferimento costante alla vita di Gesù e all'opera dello Spirito permette inoltre di approfondire prospettive che talvolta sono dimenticate nella predicazione e nella prassi ecclesiale, come le promesse del regno di Dio, l'importanza dell'impegno politico e la mistica a cui è chiamato ogni credente. Un ingrediente di grande tradizione culinaria, una fonte di ispirazione, un ponte tra i popoli; la birra è da almeno dieci secoli parte della storia del vecchio continente. Ogni capitolo di questo libro ci racconta un episodio in cui la birra è stata testimone di qualche epocale avvenimento storico - finendo per influenzare in qualche modo gli esiti: da Martin Lutero, che preparò la sua difesa alla Dieta di Worms anche grazie a un barile di birra ricevuto in regalo, fino all'assedio di Sarajevo negli anni Novanta, quando l'unica fonte d'acqua potabile rimasta in città era la fabbrica della lager locale; passando per le birre di re e operai, frati trappisti e soldati, tifosi di calcio, ciclisti disidratati e primi ministri irlandesi alticci, senza dimenticare il putsch di Monaco del 1923, quando l'astemio Adolf Hitler improvvisò un colpo di stato proprio in birreria.
