Sein Interesse gilt dem Dokumentarfilm als Medium des Neuen, das nicht durch die kulturellen Traditionen der deutschen Geschichte vorbelastet war. Er beschäftigt sich mit den Krisen und dem Scheitern der politischen und kulturellen Avantgarden in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er erinnert in seinen Essayfilmen an Menschen, die für ein anderes Leben und Arbeiten kämpfen. Und wenn es um die Kochkunst geht, geht es auch um ein anderes Leben. Nahezu neuwertig.‎
