Juni 1896 ebenda) war ein US-amerikanischer Offizier und Ethnologe. Bedeutsam sind seine ethnologischen Veröffentlichungen über die Indianer Nordamerikas sowie die interkulturellen Vergleiche zu den Traditionen der Völker. Ein Schwerpunkt seiner Veröffentlichungen beschreibt das Brauchtum beim Einsatz von Produkten der Exkretion und Defäkation. ... (wiki) // ... Die Psychoanalyse fügt noch hinzu, daß das exkrementelle Interesse beim Kinde anfänglich von den sexuellen Interessen nicht getrennt ist; die Scheidung zwischen den beiden tritt erst später auf, aber sie bleibt nur unvollkommen; die ursprüngliche, durch die Anatomie des menschlichen Körpers festgelegte Gemeinschaft schlägt noch beim normalen Erwachsenen in vielen Stücken durch. Endlich darf nicht vergessen werden, daß diese Entwicklungen ebensowenig wie irgend welche andere ein tadelloses Ergebnis liefern können; ein Stück der alten Vorliebe bleibt erhalten, ein Anteil der koprophilen Neigungen zeigt sich auch im späteren Leben wirksam und äußert sich in den Neurosen, Perversionen, Unarten, Gewohnheiten der Erwachsenen. Die Folkloristik hat ganz andere Wege der Forschung eingeschlagen und doch dieselben Resultate wie die psychoanalytische Arbeit erreicht. Sie zeigt uns, wie unvollkommen die Verdrängung der koprophilen Neigungen bei verschiedenen Völkern und zu verschiedenen Zeiten ausgefallen ist, wie sehr sich die Behandlung der exkrementellen Stoffe auf anderen Kulturstufen der infantilen Weise annähert. Sie beweist uns aber auch die Fortdauer der primitiven, wahrhaft unausrottbaren, koprophilen Interessen, indem sie zu unserem Erstaunen vor uns ausbreitet in welcher Fülle von Verwendungen in Zauberbrauch, Volksitte, Kulthandlung und Heilkunst die einstige Hochschätzung der menschlichen Ausscheidungen sich neuen Ausdruck geschaffen hat. Auch die Beziehung dieses Gebietes zum Sexualleben scheint durchweg erhalten zu sein. Mit dieser Förderung unserer Einsichten ist eine Gefährdung unserer Sittlichkeit offenbar nicht verbunden. Das Meiste und Beste, was wir über die Rolle der Ausscheidungen im Leben der Menschen wissen, ist in dem Buche von J. G. Bourke "Scatologic Rites of all Nations" zusammengetragen.
