Copan: Home of the Mayan Gods
xiv166 pages with maps figures diagrams charts photographs many in color appendix bibliography and index. Folio 12" x 9" bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering to spine and pictorial cover with pictorial end pages and "Maya" article laid in by David Stuart. Foreword by Gordon F Eckholm. First edition. Copán is an archaeological site of the Maya civilization located in the Copán Department of western Honduras not far from the border with Guatemala. It was the capital city of a major Classic period kingdom from the 5th to 9th centuries AD. The city was located in the extreme southeast of the Mesoamerican cultural region on the frontier with the Isthmo-Colombian cultural region and was almost surrounded by non-Maya peoples. In this fertile valley now lies a city of about 3000 a small airport and a winding road. Copán was occupied for more than two thousand years from the Early Preclassic period to the Postclassic. The city developed a distinctive sculptural style within the tradition of the lowland Maya perhaps to emphasize the Maya ethnicity of the city's rulers. The city has a historical record that spans the greater part of the Classic period and has been reconstructed in detail by archaeologists and epigraphers. Copán was a powerful city ruling a vast kingdom within the southern Maya area. The city suffered a major political disaster in AD 738 when Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil one of the greatest kings in Copán's dynastic history was captured and executed by his former vassal the king of Quiriguá.5 This unexpected defeat resulted in a 17-year hiatus at the city during which time Copán may have been subject to Quiriguá in a reversal of fortunes. A significant portion of the eastern side of the acropolis has been eroded away by the Copán River although the river has since been diverted in order to protect the site from further damage. The Titles of Ebtun
xvii4723 maps 2 folding 12 plates figures and index. Quarto 11 1//2" x 9" bound in original publisher's wrappers. Carnegie Institution of Washington Publication 505. First edition. In the archives of Ebtun and Indian village near Valladolid in Eastern Yucatan there is a large collection of papers which together with related documents from other sources cover practically the entire colonial period and the first decade of the independence of Yucatan. These are the only native Yucatecan archives available for study which cover a large part of the colonial period. In these documents we are able to trace the manner in which native communities adapted themselves to the conditions imposed by their Spanish conquerors and establish a correlation between the mode of life related by the sixteenth-century Spanish writers and that described in the modern ethnological studies of the region. The Ebtun archives were discovered about 1917 by William Gates who named them the Titulos de Ebutn. Securing the loan of the collection from the town authorities and before returning it to Ebtun where it is to be found at the present time he photographed and mounted the documents and had them bound. Photographs of the collection were acquired by C P Bowditch who presented them to the Peabody Museum of Harvard. The first notice of these documents was published by A M Tozzer in A Maya Grammar in 1921. In the present work the Ebtun papers have been supplemented by a copy of the native map of Sotuta at Tulane University and a collection of documents known as documentos de Tierras de Sotuta. The latter is found in the Codex Perez in Yucatan where S G Morley secured photographs of this manuscript. The Huarochiri Manuscript: A Testament of Ancient and Colonial Religion
xiv273 pages with frontispiece glossary and index. Quarto 11 1/4" x 8 3/4" bound in original publisher's brown cloth with black lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Annotations and introductory Essay by Frank Salomontranscription by George L Urioste. First edition. <br /><br /> One of the great repositories of a people's world view and religious beliefs the Huarochiri Manuscript may bear comparison with such civilization-defining works as Gilgamesh the Popul Vuh and the Sagas. This untitled undated and annonymous manuscript perserved in Spain's Biblioteca Naciona is the only known colonial Andean book of myth belief and ritual written in the Quechua language. This translation by Frank Salomon and George L Urioste marks the first time the Huarochiri Manuscript has been translated into English making it available to English-Speaking students of Andean culture and world mythology and religions. The Huarochiri Manuscript holds a summation of native Andean religious tradition and an image of the superhuman and human world as imagined around AD 1600. The tellers were provincial Indians dwelling on the west Andean slopes near Lima Peru aware of the Incas but rooted in peasant rather than imperial culture. The manuscript is thought to havbe been compiled at the behest of Father Francisco de Avila the notorious "extipator of idolatries." Yet it expresses Andean religious ideas largely from within Andean categories of though making it an unparalleled source for the prehispanic and early colonial myths ritual practices and historic self-image of the native Andeans. In the works of the great Quechua-Spanish poet Jose Maria Arguedas it lets us "witness that deeds of those who believed in the ancient gods look into their faces and feel what stirred inside them."<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br /> "Hurt books" stamped on heal end pages. Tizoc: Great Lord of the Aztecs 1481 - 1486
vi78 pages with 8 tipped in plates including frontispiece and 16 figures. Royal octavo 10" x 6 3/4" bound in original publisher's wrappers. Contributions from the Museum of the American Indian Heye Foundation Volume VII number 4. First edition. Tizocic or Tizocicatzin the honorific form of his name usually known in English as Tizoc was the seventh tlatoani of Tenochtitlan. Most sources agree that he took power in 1481 the Aztec year "2 House" succeeding his older brother Axayacatl. Although Tízoc's reign was relatively short he began the rebuilding of the Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlan a task completed by his younger brother Ahuitzotl in 1487 and also put down a rebellion of the Matlatzincan peoples of the Toluca Valley. According to the Codex Mendoza during Tizoc's reign the altepetl of Tonalimoquetzayan Toxico Ecatepec Cillan Tecaxic Tolocan Yancuitlan Tlappan Atezcahuacan Mazatlan Xochiyetla Tamapachco Ecatliquapechco and Miquetlan were conquered. Tizoc died in 1486 though it's still somewhat unclear how. Some sources suggest that he was poisoned others that he was the victim of "sorcery" or illness. It has been suggested that either Tlacaelel or other members of the royal family especially Ahuitzotl were responsible for the poisoning of Tizoc. Changing Military Patterns on the Great Plains 17th Century through Early 19th Century
viii1122 ad pages with maps and bibliography. Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 6 3/4" bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. American Ethnological Society Monograph XXI. First edition. This well written monograph deals with changes that have taken place among the Indians of the Great Plains especially with respect to military patterns. These changes are ascribed to first the introduction of the house from the Santa Fe New Mexico region via the Apache and second the introduction of the gun from the Northwestern Woodlands via the Cree-Assiniboin and the Siouan Peoples. Both these patterns merged in the north central plains giving rise to the "typical plains cultures" of the 19th century. Condition: Spine gilt dulled and rubbed else a very good copy.
